Will Dried Moss Return to Life?

- Welcome back everyone! In this one we'll upgrade a few of my setups and remove the terrarium from the terrarium in an aquarium. As I said in the video, this wasn't an easy decision to make because once it's out, it's out. However, the more time went on I felt that it was the right thing to do for a number of reasons. The fish will have a larger volume of water to enjoy, the aquarium will look nicer and the tank can be rescaped/planted to some degree.
With the above in mind, I will most like use a few seiryu stones and some driftwood to spice up the scape. I'm not sure about the wood, but definitely the stones. Keep in mind that I want to retain the hardscape that's there currently and simply add to it. I know the aquarium isn't much to look at now, but it will be magnificent in no time. If that's a process you'd like to see, let me know in the comments otherwise I'll just do it on my own.
I purchased the Dusk Moss Mix and the vivarium plants from www.glassboxtropicals.com/ They have a great selection of plants that always come in well. Definitely a good resource to use if you're in the market for plants, microfauna, hardscape or dusk moss of course.
Also, the botanicals came from tanninaquatics.com/ They have an excellent selection of botanicals that are reasonably priced. If you've never ordered them before I'd recommend one of their enigma packs and let them know what type of setups you keep. They'll curate a bag full of botanicals specifically designed for your hobby.

SerpaDesign I think the smell you got opening the jar means you made the right decision. It’s a great idea, but one that’s not really great in practice. I have always agreed with you over maintaining the terrariums, and having one in the aquarium made that near impossible.

You could try and mount the jar on top of a rock exposing the rim of the jar just above the water line:)
The one hundred eighty gallon vivarium has made me have a new appreciation for plants. I only saw them as individuals, but now I see how they can work harmoniously. I love going to the forest and I couldn’t find out why it was calm but it was easy on my eyes. Before plant were just animals who can’t move, but now I see them as a part of nature in other places besides the forest. I was waiting for the dart frogs, but now I think they’ll take away the beauty, they’ll be a distraction from the beauty of the plants. I used to want dart frogs, but instead now having a beautiful group of plants is what I want. So I say don’t get the frogs, I think you won’t appreciate the plants as much.
what fish are kept in that tank? i need some for my setup but i forgot the name oops..
Can you do a terrarium growing mushrooms? I love their look, tiny little ones of course. I think it would be a hit. If its possible. Thanks !

Mushrooms are the "fruit". It might be tough to get them forming all the time.

occasionally they will pop up in a tank as it matures so i just enjoy them while they last

Superb! Love all your videos about terrariums, vivariums and paludariums. You're doing such a great job mimicking nature, no matter what is the size of the enclosure. For me it is the hardest part of creating a terrarium.

I am sure you could film every little thing you do with this hobby and most will enjoy it. You have an awesome talent and even if something doesn’t work out right it is still nice to see because you have such a passion for it. While some other aquascapers try to make their tanks looks like a Hollywood movie set, with fake rifts, unrealistic stones, and even waterfalls, I truly love that your tanks look like a realistic slice of the forest.
It is really cool to see an advanced builder like yourself succeed, but it is just as interesting to me seeing how to properly troubleshoot and promote success long term despite hiccups along the way.
I appreciated the moss mix technique and links. Kudos on frankly reviewing your experiment ! We all learn by trial and error, and it take a confident instructor to discuss both. Thanks again, Jim

I love your videos! I am a science teacher , watching these videos and the HTT vids has inspired me to try and attempt making mini terrariums with my students this spring. Trying to decide on good “free” or nearly free containers. Water bottles seem to be a logical choice as they are everywhere but I’d like something glass. We are in Louisiana so we have a pretty endless supply of mosses and plants that grow well in our environment! Keep up the great videos , I’ve learned something from each of them!

OK dude! You have to tell me (us?!) how you manage to keep everything wet enough for the mosses to grow, without over watering the other plants, causing root rot? Is it indicative of a problem with my substrate that I can't do both - grow plants AND moss? Thanks so much, again! Big love from a sunny Scotland
What type of substrate are you using? Could be that it's retaining too much moisture. Also I'm going to assume that you have a false bottom, but can it be drained? Both the substrate and false bottom are what I could see potentially being the issue. In my case I specifically target the mosses with my sprayer and then minimally spray elsewhere.
@@SerpaDesign I used a real mix of stuff in the substrate. Coco fibre, organic potting compost, sphagnum, top soil, gravel. Since then I have added loads of leaf litter, both full leaves and kinda mashed up stuff. I've also been using a special rainforest substrate mix supplied by a bioactive vivarium specialist - I've been using it when putting new plants in. And I do have a false bottom, which I drain just by moving the substrate and mesh aside and inserting a huge syringe in one of the front corners. I've only had to do that once though, the drainage layer was maybe half full. But I'm even killing pothos!!! It's very disappointing, as I have always kept house plants with great success. I do have to use a heat lamp though, and I think it is drying everything out too quickly, so that might explain the moss not growing. Still not sure why all my other plants are dying though. It always smells good, my crested gecko Buffy is very happy, the microfauna seem to be doing ok. I'm mystified!

There is one problem I've had since I was 18, algae. This pesky and annoying substance is impossible to get rid of. You add water change, new algae will grow. You add plants, new algae will grow. You add rocks and ornaments, new algae will grow, sometimes fluffy and black (black beard), sometimes a complete carpet of velvety brown textures, at other times plant leaves get green hair, or just green or bluish algae that smears the entire tank glass and even the clear plastic tubes used for air bubbles. No matter how much you fight to have a crystal clear tank and, algae-free environment, it won't take long for this dreaded pest to return the moment you do even a water change or scrape the glass, within 6 days new algae of some kind will creep up and contaminate the entire tank. Even the Plecos, Octocinclus, Chinese algae eater, Siamese Algae Eaters, etc., can't catch up as they tirelessly scrape away 'tons' of this green menace, that they will get mouth ulcers from scraping their mouths against rought surfaces where this dreaded devil has simply got itself a foothold and difficult to eradicate. The algae that is eaten is usually embedded on smooth surface such as glass, and is easy to scrape away. But, it's the one that is embedded on rough surface such as rocks that the poor fish end up with scraping their lips, teeth, etc., leading to faster wear and bruises. I lost a Siamese Algae Eater from an infection caught while it was happily scraping algae from rocks. The infection worsened and the fish was in pain that couldn't eat or swallow. Lucky I took a video of its plight. The poor fish died. I have since replaced the rocks with smooth rounded river rocks and there is now a significant difference. Ever coarse substrate is bad for fish, Corydoras in particulars because they have a habit of pressing their mouths into the substrate to reach a missed morsel they have smelled. In doing their forceful deep entry into the coarse substrate they often damage their barbels which are vital in their well-being, sense of smell and ability to find the food that immediately find its way down into the gaps of the coarse sand pebbles. Substrate sand of 2 to 3 mm is adequate, as the food cannot sink into the spaces of the smaller size sands, so it will be found and eaten before this happens. The best substrate sand is machine tumbled to smooth pebbles of 2-3 mm, like that of river sand rather than crushed and sieved quartz rock which has jagged surface. Algae Eaters have no problem scraping any algae that colonize the smooth and round sand than scraping it on rough and jagged sand that came from crushed stone and tumbled a little so that YOU don't cut yourself. But, the fish? Well, they are the ones who suffer and have no voice and no way of telling you about the shitty environment they live in. You have to consider where the fish came from, what their environment was, what was the bottom of their rivers, etc.

Just spitballing here, but have you considered wiring some airline tubing to the underwater closed terrarium. Theoretically, that should allow it be in equilibrium with the room atmosphere, so you shouldn’t have too much condensation.
Maybe two connection ports, one for air to naturally pass through, and another that you can use to drip fresh water into the system to maintain humidity. Yes, it won’t be a closed terrarium, but it will have the appearance of one and theoretically could work?

Was hoping you might do a mini video on getting the aquarium back to perfect condition after you took out the terrarium. My tanks always look very good but not PERFECT like yours. I get tiny algae patches, or odd plant growth, or water discolor ever so slightly. I try everything I can to get my tank pristine like your but I just can’t ever keep it that way for more than a day. Would love to see your process for getting and keeping an aquarium crystal clear and healthy. Thanks again for the constantly top notch content and inspiration!
I got you! At the end of the day it all comes with balancing a tank. Algae is inevitable and even pristine looking tanks have it. Without knowing everything about your tanks I can't diagnose, but I'm curious what your filtration and circulation is like.
SerpaDesign wow thanks for the response! I have a 55 gallon with an aqua clear 110 filter on one side. I also use 1 sponge filter on the opposite side. I use to have a current pump but it burnt out last month. I gravel vac and do water changes weekly. I use to be able to do more maintenance but I had a little one a couple months back and staying on top has proven difficult lol. Thanks again for your hard work and your communication with your subs :)
Buy the high grade dried Orchid moss sold at Home Depot,put it in a bag with water near light..presto!..it returns to life as the spores sprout. Sphagnum moss seems to do well at home temperatures even if it was collected someplace in cold Canada.
Now that we're on lockdown and we're forced to embrace new things, I grabbed a bunch of native stuff around my house. I pretty much had it all, to my surprise!, and am now excited about building my first terrarium.

I love to watch you work on these, you make it all seem effortless, but I’m certain you have given a great deal of thought and planning before you put hand to the task. I particularly appreciate the huge difference the black backing has made to Casper’s tank. I think you definitely made the right choice regarding the terrarium, it likely would have drastically changed the ecology of the tank to just open it up. To the fish tank.
I got a container of that dehydrated moss to give me the base of a shade garden in the Spring/...seriously hoping it works as well as it claims to. I think it has buttermilk dehydrated into it as well, but I’m not sure. Thanks for sharing the beauty again...I’m always happy to get lost in the green of your creations.🖤🇨🇦

Love the video update thanks as always. For the blackwater betta tank, the black background looks amazing, but might I suggest mounting a mirror above at a 45 degree angle to reflect the light from outside into a spotlight in the tank. If nothing else it would add a nice dramatic touch.

Always wanted to be a terraformer on Mars designing ecosystems. Too old to do that now, but these are the next best thing. Little worlds all their own! Living in the Mojave Desert will present its own challenges. But you've inspired me to try. New to terrariums and new subscriber. Thanks for creating such beautiful little worlds!

Casper's tank looks amazing! I'm also a fan of black back drops on my tanks. My blackwater tank is finally done and it looks great as well. It was hard work setting it up but so worth it as my betta is happy. Going to be setting up a 10 gallon betta sorority in a few months, and a molly/guppy tank in a 29 gallon after that.
I would love to see how you bring your aquarium back into balance! Understandably, it wouldn't be a how to guide. But seeing your little fight against algae would be nice and could give the rest of us ideas :)
