All About Terrarium False Bottoms (Purpose & Methods)

  • The False Bottom (aka Drainage Layer or Riparian Layer) is arguably one of the most important aspects of a terrarium. This layer is the foundation of your terrarium. Strong foundations lead to strong results and weak foundations lead to weak results.
That said, you typically see me use the Mesh Barrier False Bottom (w/ Window Screen Mesh). From personal experience I have found it to be one of, if not the best method. However, you DO NOT have to use this method. I understand that a lot of you don't have access to the materials that I use or want to try alternatives.
This video expounds upon the methods that I have found to be the most successful. If you are resourceful you can alter these methods to you specific needs or limitations. As long as the principals and techniques are understood, then you are golden. Not only will your terrarium have a strong foundation, but you will as well! :)
Keep in mind that there are pros and cons to every single method. So whichever False Bottom you choose to make is totally up to you.
If you have any questions or topic you'd like me to cover in the future, let me know in the comments section below. If you liked this video, please give it a big thumbs up!

Well without any further delay, I'm back! I have had a lot of things happen in the past few weeks that stopped me from using CZcams. I am really sorry for the absence, but it was all out of my hands. My next vlog which will drop on Saturday or Sunday will go over the details. I will also address all of the comments starting tonight or tomorrow morning. If I didn't address your question(s) I wasn't ignoring you.
Anyways, I'm back at it with another highly requested video! I get a ton of questions about false bottoms and this video pretty much addresses them all. Taking the time to create a proper false bottom is extremely important. This is the foundation of your terrarium and strong foundations lead to strong results. So if you haven’t already, take your false bottom (drainage layer or riparian layer) to the next level! See the video description for more info as well.
Thanks for watching and I will be back very soon! Also if you liked this video, I would appreciate a big thumbs up! :)

SerpaDesign some of my mosses in my moss container were turning brown, so I inspected the moss container to see what was wrong. I found that the taller growing mosses were turning brown because when I spray the moss, the water doesn't get to the bottom of the moss clumps, but more importantly, i found several tiny white bugs crawling around under the moss when i lifted it up. I am pretty sure they are springtails. It looked like they were eating the small bits of mold that grew under the moss, as well as the dead, rotting moss. I have noticed they are only under the mosses that are growing at the top, but dead on the bottom. they also burrow under ground and jump when I try to catch one. I eventually captured one and took a picture. If they are springtails, how do I keep them alive? I believe that they came inside the moss I ordered online and were stowed away under the "roots".

    • @SerpaDesign

Great video! I always make my terrariums starting with a layer of fake sand(sold at most dollar stores in my different colors, homemade wood charcoal, fish tank pebbles (also sold at most dollar stores) then I add my soil which I also usually buy at the dollar store. So far this has worked for me and has saved me a lot of money to enjoy this hobby.
I use fake sand because its not as tightly compact as real sand and the grains of sand are larger. it allows water to go into it better than real sand. (i make native terrariums or grow things from seeds bought at dollar stores)

I used rocks from Wally and everything else from there.

  • @AliRadicali
    @AliRadicali Před 2 lety +2

I don't think using a decomposing material for the mesh necessarily dooms the setup in the long run. For one, the substrate tends to consolidate into a semi-solid mass over time as water passes through it and gravity does its thing. What's more, as your plants grow their root systems will further help bind the substrate into a solid unit. Anyone who has repotted a plant before will have noticed this phenomenon.

Hey, I'm wanting to make a few sealed terrariums so I binge watched your videos this week. I have a couple questions that you'll probably be able to answer to help me out.
The first question is about false bottoms. Is lava rock a good media to use? I have buckets of 3/4 and smaller that I use for weed control in my gardens.
The other is you say to not use fertilizer if you use live animals, does this include aged horse manure, garden lime, potash and bone meal? I want to use springtails (learned from you), earthworms and dwarf isopods. The soil I use for gardening is a mix of compost and horse poo, a little lime to help with ph, and a little of the other 2 to help the plants, and this is the mix I was going to use. Yesterday I found 4 tree frogs and a toad in my greenhouse and my soil doesn't seem to bother them, but it's not sealed.
Also will those critters live together?
Thank you for making all this content, I really did learn a lot from you.

Thanks and there's too much water in. Simply wipe it off with a paper towel until it stops happening all the time. You want to see the happen sometimes (usually the morning and evening), but not all the time.

Great tutorial! Loving the vids and your art.
Question: would it be just as well to omit the gravel and go straight to the charcoal, followed by mesh then substrate? Can the charcoal serve as the false bottom as well as gravel?

Some terrarium-makers dont even use false bottoms, so yes! It makes things a bit trickier and sometimes causes water to run up through the soil and keep it wet but if you do it right then yes. If its a smaller terrarium then a barrier isnt really needed a lot of the time because there isnt much water.

I've seen other vids about false bottoms and some people use moss as the barrier. Do you think this to be a good barrier or not? btw, your vids are the best on the Internet and I now have 5 terrariums.

Thanks for your interesting video, i have a doubt what if i decide to make a terrarium sealed with any kind of false bottom maybe pebbles not charcoal would it be the same thing i mean the cicle.

Hey, I've seen some of your videos about terrariums and you seem to know lots about them!
I wanted to ask you: how much water should I put in my closed terrarium?
Let's say for example that i'm using a jar like the one you used at 5:13 in the video.
    Thank you in advance!

It's tough to give a specific amount, but around a tablespoon should be good. Since plants and soil already have moisture in them, they will also factor into the equation.

Awesome videos Serpa, I m starting to fall in love with the terarrium hobby, on my way to creating my first one! Keep creating great content!
One question: do you think that insect window mesh will do the trick for the false bottom (hole diameter is 2mm)? I cannot find a material that comes closer to your suggestion. Thanks!

Awesome and yeah that should work fine if it's not metal.
