  • It's time for another experiment, the Venus Fly Trap Terrarium! A lot of you have been asking me to do a carnivorous plant terrarium for some time and here's one of them. As I expressed in the video, the likelihood for success here really isn't all that high given the nature of these plants. However, I do think that if I play my cards right I can get this to work.
    Venus Fly Traps require very specific care requirements. I tried to cover the basics the best I could in this video, but if this is something that interests you, I highly recommend doing your research ahead of time (as you should with anything). I really didn't cover all that much, just enough to explain what I was doing. Also, I'm not an expert with these types of plants, but I tried my best to make a terrarium that I felt could sustain these plants.
    Lastly, as I said in the video, I will document the whole process (on video) and release a follow up video in early-mid spring. If we can this thing going long-term, I will follow up with a more in-depth video. I will also do a less experimental, tropical carnivorous plant terrarium at some point in the future.

    If you are completely new to terrariums then I recommend checking out the lineup of videos I have linked below. It may seem daunting at first and you may initially fail, but if you keep at it, terrariums are pretty simple and really fun! That said, understanding the fundamentals is key and these videos will help you with that. From there, you should be able to take your skills and make something amazing!

If you want more versatile carnivorous plants, sundews are found in almost every environment whereas flytraps are only found in one or two states. Butterworts might do well in AZ also. Edit: Woah never thought anyone would be bothered to read my rambling. Thanks guys!
    Good job, you really did your research and it looks great! For feeding them, I would recommend using smaller bugs though, because if it's sticking out the trap in any way, while the plant may be able to extract some nutrients from it, the trap will definitely go black and rot from the bacteria entering it. This is especially a problematic for mold growth in a close humid environment like a terrarium. I know from experience. Some flytraps do better with food that's a great deal smaller than the traps. I use freeze dried bloodworms for feeding betta fish as you can give them enough to fill the traps, but not too much, and measure it out. If you feed them these though, make sure to massage the traps so they are triggered multiple times, or else it won't recognize it as prey and will just open up again and the food will rot/mold.
    Moss is actually very beneficial for CPs. So long as they don't have ferts attached you don't have to worry about contaminants, because it grows alongside carnivorous plants in the wild. I have a pot with a sundew that's been taken over by star moss I think, and I'd say it's probably one of my healthiest plants. The moss prevents all mold/algae growth by taking it over and "eating" it, and I only have to water the plant like once every few weeks, because it holds moisture so well. This will be great for flytraps, because they are extremely drought intolerant. Leave them a day with dry soil and you'll find them black and shriveled.
    Good choice on keeping the container open, I have found that flytraps prefer much dryer and less humid conditions than any other Carnivorous Plant, even sarrencias which are another north american CP.
    And don't worry too much about dormancy. If you skip it once, it's not gonna shorten the lifespan of your plant by a substantial enough amount to notice. I skipped it with my flytrap seedlings before as I decided they were too small to recover from it. Often commercial growers skip dormancy as they grow the plants in-vitro, or just give the plants so many nutrients that that they grow year-round. It's a large debate between CP growers whether or not flytraps will have a shortened lifespan without dormancy, but they are technically immortal, so? Anyways, if the plants are put near a window they'll quickly notice the temperature changes, and at the same time appreciate sun (as they look extremely light-deprived), and figure out when it's time.
    I'm just being a know-it-all at this point haha, but I hope this info is helpful to anyone who reads it.

      Home Media Think you’re thinking of sundews. And sometimes just a single factor can influence this and it’s hard to figure out without the right supplied and research, as well as lots and lots of experience. flytraps are one of the easiest and most tolerant, so long as they’re not left to dry, and I didn’t see any major flaws in his choices. I think they’ll do fine :)

    Honestly, I feel like they are simple to care for. I've had a 10 gallon terrarium with Venus fly traps. They were planted in peat moss and plenty, plenty of water. Cover the tank with plastic wrap and place a grow light, and they are good. In winter, I just turned off the grow light and kept them near a window, where it's cooler but there is some light. Now, I have one Venus flytrap in a pot that sits in a container filled with distilled water on the windowsill. Grows like a charm.

I think it will be challenging to keep them alive in there because they can take everything but low light (think about all the energy they need to digest those bugs, that means STRONG SUN :) )

    I like the video and concept a lot but I'm skeptical about this one lasting long term. a "bog pot" or "bog garden" would have made a better and more natural home for the traps and you could have added sundews and pitchers as well. If this experiment doesn't pan out, you should consider making a bog garden outside adjacent to the pond you want to build! could make for a really cool episode or series!! Still love this though, I hope it works out! Thanks for all of the advice and tips over the years! Yay, you saved the flytraps from the Death Cubes! I just found your channel and love your work, and as a person who grows a lot of carnivores, I was excited to see what you’d do.
    Normally I don’t recommend terrariums for flytraps because (contrary to the common perception) they just don’t need that steamy environment, but as long as you can meet their very high light requirements without cooking them, why not?
    On dormancy, some “orthodox” growers will squawk, but unlike most temperate carnivores, flytraps actually can skip their dormancy IF you provide the consistent high light. But that won’t happen without artificial light, which is why so many of them end up dying. There are several other warm temperate bog carnivores you could grow with them too and even one Sarracenia, rosea (the other Sarracenias will just stop growing they miss more than one dormancy).
    I grow mine outdoors year round but I live in Seattle and we have pretty mild winters. Still they can take low 20s with no problem as long as they don’t dessicate.
    Well, now I have to go check and see how these did!

  • @DavinStewart
    @DavinStewart Před 5 lety +78

    NO! BAD! Flytraps are not well suited for terrarium culture. They need at least 5 hours of direct sun to grow well. Preferably more.
    The setup in this video encourages a long, slow death over the course of a few years as they lose more and more stored energy until they eventually succumb to a disease or other issue. The only way you might get this to work for long term growth is if you provided them with LED light equivalent to sunlight. LEDs produce less heat than other other artificial light sources and would allow you to give them enough light to grow well. Using sunlight will bake the plants in that container ... yes, even with the top open.
    In addition, the lack of bottom drainage will cause two problems ...
    1. If we're talking about a permanent environment over years of time then salts will eventually accumulate even if you're using distilled water. The soil needs to be flushed occasionally to keep it from going bad.
    2. The constant moisture on the plants roots will cause rot over time. Flytraps like it a bit drier than other bog plants.
    Look, if you want to grow flytrap just put them in a 1:1 peat:perlite or sand mix, put them in an oversized pot so they have plenty of room of their root systems (their roots can extend up to 8 inches into the medium), put them outside in a sunny location during the warm months, and if you live north of zone 6 then bring them indoors for the winter in a cold, sunny room or garage.
    The only place in the world where venus flytraps are native is North and South Carolina. They're found typically on the sunny slopes around peat bogs near the coast. The closer you can get to that type of environment, the better your plants will do.

      @DavinStewart Před 5 lety +7

      @@roxik1073 That may be a little pessimistic. From my experience, flytraps in this kind of environment will go through a long, slow death by attrition. It may take a year or two but eventually they'll succumb to something as their energy levels get lower and lower.
      If they're able to blast that terrarium with enough LED light and are able to provide a decent dormancy period then the flytraps might be able to last for a while.

      It’s not that picky, honestly grows just like other plants only with nutrient free soil & water. They propagate by leaf pullings in tissue culture, but also they flower and produce seeds like other plants. The seeds sprout in moist substrate. It’s not that hard to get a few hundred plants year after year if you have a collection and are actively propagating them. All of the cultivars are a result of selected seeds produced in people’s collections.
