I'm surprised that hypnum, sphagnum, and badge moss didn't make an appearance. Sphagnum is an icon of all horticulture, live or dead, and hypnum and badge are among the most common wild mosses, and in my experience are the most adaptable. Even thread moss is remarkably hardy and common. Fern moss, while less common, is incredibly iconic, and known to be an easy terrarium option.

Bun moss is my absolute go to. I've used sheet mode a little too but it's finicky and takes a lot of cleaning up before I can use it! I've used aquatic mosses when aquascaping but am always concerned I won't have enough humidity to use in my terrariums.
I'm definitely going to try some of the others on your list though.

Multiple Decades ago I created and failed many a terrarium. Now after I have found you I have three successful ones but they are all different. You taught me not to use soil (although one of mine has some ) and you taught me not to worry about roots, just place on top and they grow. That light and fresh air are key. So many things I have learned these past 6 months! Only problem I have are gnats and I have no netting for the top. I purchased 2 little aquariums and want to go soilless

Where it dies I will remove it. Where it lives I will water it. I just wish I had more types available but there seems to be very little in my area.

What a nice and informative video! I have a question if I may.
I've recently bought a large box of Leucobryum Glaucum, for my frog vivarium. I was wondering how you ensure that no bugs are introduced to the terrarium/vivarium, since mosses often carry hitchhikers. I currently have the moss (and all the other plants) in quarantine (for 4-8 weeks) before I will use them. I do not want to use any chemicals because of the frogs, as they are hyper sensitive.
What I have done is to thoroughly rinse the moss in water (room temperature) and submerged the moss for 20 minutes before draining it and leaving it in its (nearly) airtight quarantine box, with access to natural light (no direct sun). All soil is removed as well. For misting I use dechlorinated water meant for the frogs. I am considering investing in a water purifier as well. The water here in the Netherlands is very hard, like in Great Britain. Would you say the routine I have with the moss and plants is sufficient to remove bugs, or do I need to make additional steps?

Usually by taking cover or lid off for a few minutes every few days. Online sources vary as to how long and how often. You can buy acyrilic lids with or without small holes in them online to cover jars or bottles. Moss terrariums don't necessarily have to be covered, but it does help keep humidity higher when you do.

00:00 🌿 Moss enhances terrariums by adding depth and visual appeal.
01:48 💡 Terrestrial and aquatic mosses have different requirements but both contribute to terrarium aesthetics.
02:22 🌿 Mood moss is easy to plant and covers large areas quickly, suitable for both small and large terrariums.
03:26 🌱 Dichranomarges greater fork moss adds height and texture, requiring minimal preparation before planting.
04:28 🌿 Lukovium glorcum pincushion moss thrives in terrariums with minimal maintenance, ideal for beginners.
06:06 🌱 Polytrichum formosum bankhair moss is visually striking but requires experimentation for optimal growth.
07:04 🌿 Niamh hornum spear moss maintains vibrant color and contrasts well with other mosses, adding visual interest.
08:00 🌱 Iridium tamariscanum tamarisk moss, with its feather-like texture, enhances terrariums with a sense of scale.
09:02 🌊 Aquatic mosses like taxiphyllum barbieri java moss and vesicularia derbiana Christmas moss provide ground cover and are easy to maintain with proper airflow and humidity.

Your exhaled breath has an abundance of CO2, which is the gas that plants inhale for life and exhale O2 for us animals to live.
