34. Drupla Sonam Tsering: The Faults of Samsara Part Four: The Sufferings of the Human Realm

Based on our understanding of the sufferings of the three lower realms in previous sessions, we should give rise to compassion. But why do we need compassion? In session 34, Drupla will explain why we need compassion for other beings, the methods to cultivate compassion, and how to put those into practice. He will also explain how we can employ analytical and resting meditation as we build our compassion.
You may also wonder, is the cultivation of compassion enough to avoid those lower realms? Drupla mentions the other methods we also need in order to be free from the sufferings of the lower realms. Then, he continues explaining there are three higher realms. While you may think you’ll find different kinds of happiness there, as the Buddha and bodhisattvas have taught, these three higher realms are also full of sufferings and they are still part of samsara’s realms. Moreover, Drupla reminds us of the three root sufferings and the eight great sufferings and explains why even the nature of the happiness of the higher realms is also suffering.
In the later part of the session, Drupla explains about the sufferings of the human realm. If we contemplate how precious time is we know we should not live a futile lifestyle. Meaningless pursuits increase the possibility of being reborn in lower realms, where opportunities to free ourselves from non-virtue and thus, from the causes of suffering are scarce.
