33. Drupla Sonam Tsering: The Faults of Samsara Part Four: The Sufferings Pretas and Animals

For the first half of session 33, Drupla continues to expound on the sufferings and the characteristics of beings in the six realms of existence. He discusses in detail the different types of pretas, or starving spirits.
Due to their negative habits in previous lives, pretas tend to harm beings around them by trying to influence or transfer their own sufferings to others. Pretas suffer greatly from craving and hallucinatory experiences. In addition, due to their habits of harming, they might also experience harsh punishments from spiritual masters, when requested by students to protect them from harmful beings.
In the second half of the session, Drupla moves on to the suffering of animal realms. Each type of animal, regardless of where they dwell, endures different kinds of suffering such as being hunted, enslaved, or slaughtered and eaten. Animals live in a state of constant fear and anxiety.
To conclude, Drupla once again instructs us on several methods of contemplation. We can apply different methods such as conceptualization and meditation (analytical and resting). We can review each point made during this series of teachings on suffering one by one, taking them as meditation objects. These meditation techniques give rise to the feeling of weariness and renunciation. They also allow us to easily generate compassion for those beings in the three lower realms.
