0:00 Intro
2:34 How Dennis and his brother Terence tuned in to “vegetable television” with the addition of an ayahuasca ingredient to their regular consumption of mushrooms and cannabis, and why even the components of tried-and-true ayahuasca are in constant flux depending on who’s making it.
09:15 Why is it that psychoactive drugs don’t always work - even in people who usually feel their effects - and what keeps us from finding out through controlled studies?
18:06 As much as Dennis has experimented with adding and subtracting ingredients to various psychoactive admixtures, he’s come to believe it’s best to avoid combinations if possible. There are often alternative ways to dial the effects of these substances up or down as desired.
25:20 Why would we have cannabinoid, opiate, and other molecular receptors in our brains unless we’re designed to consume these substances from external sources?
32:54 Tales of terror from the world of psilocybin cicadas, cordyceps zombies, and toxoplasmic rodents.
38:56 Dennis shares his thoughts on psychedelics as a potential treatment for dyslexia and other language-based disorders.
46:49 What happened to Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell after having his savikalpa samadhi experience - a mystic glimpse beyond the self into the true nature of things? Does Dennis believe current psychedelic pioneers are misguided in downplaying the mystical experiences certain compounds bring out in people?
51:17 For anyone curious about Albert Hofmann’s discovery of LSD, Dennis recommends the graphic novel Bicycle Day by Brian Blomerth.
52:31 My recommended resources for learning more about the perceptual phenomenon of synesthesia.
54:36 What ESPD 55 entails: its history, its itinerary, and how you can participate even if you can’t physically make it to the conference in the UK from May 23rd to the 26th.
1:07:43 How does Dennis relate to mortality and the inevitability of death?
1:11:12 What is BioGnosis?
1:13:34 How does Dennis feel about synthetic substitutes for psychedelic compounds that have been traditionally harvested from natural - and often endangered - sources? What adaptations might groups who see these plants as sacred have to make to ensure that some of them don’t go extinct?
1:25:57 Most communities of any size eventually have to deal with in-fighting and power grabs from a certain element, and the psychedelic community is no exception. Can Dennis imagine any solutions to this unfortunate reality?
1:35:58 What would Dennis choose if he could only partake of three psychoactive substances for the rest of his life?
1:37:45 The pros and cons of cannabis consumption and its methods of delivery, and how modern strains can induce experiences akin to psychedelics.
1:44:35 What we can expect from an upcoming second edition of The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss, The BioGnosis Project (and its first associated documentary [to be screened at ESPD 55]), virtualizing the Herbarium in Iquitos, and other parting thoughts.

Tim Ferriss has over 1mil subs, this podcast has been out for over two months, and only has 21k views?! People SLEEPING ON DENNIS. What a disservice. Thank you for your service
The La Chorrera legend himself! You could never interview this fellow too many times!
Tim Ferriss, please do more psychedelic conversations. You're really good at it, because you know so much about it.
PPP
What an awesome convo! Thanks for bringing Dennis on for yet another insightful discussion
Mckenna and Paul Stamets, absolutely brilliant information sharers .
I have been mixing cordyceps lion's mane and psilocybin and finding results quite beneficial in healing
Amazing conversation! Dennis is awesome ❤
On behalf of myself and no doubt many others, really miss your brother.
Bravo Tim Ferriss and Dennis McKenna. Psychedelic conversations are the best, and are really important. Psychedelics can help us achieve more agency and communion with everything.
As Alan Watts notes, these divine substances are known as sacraments; a tool to suppress the ego and allow revelatory experiences, certainly. Though it can be used in a productive manner, I would be cautious as they can be a bit of a crutch. I do agree that is does help though!

Best podcast in the business! Thx for your work Tim.

I can't find a source anywhere for any good psychedelics in my area, I suffer some pretty bad depression and i got a chance to try K and man it was a miracle substance, I felt free, the only high or euphoria was from the relief of my vices being released, that's exactly what it did
The psychedelic experience is temporary but many people have permanent results
Mushroom completely turned my life around and my anxiety and panic attack disappeared and my personality changed into a much more generous loving person

OOOOOH DENNIIIIS
You're doing part two of the screaming abyss im so excited to read it..
This convo is super illuminating im so thankyou you accepted the possibility of being a public figure. you have done a lot for my further understanding by doing lots of interviews and symposiums. You could have just released a few books and been done with all the attention but you allowed us to see the world through your eyes by agreeing to do interviews as well.
All the best super star!
This interview is on another level. Excellent job.
Really great conversations these days... Thank you.
Great work as usual. A great guest
Engaging and fun interview per usual. Congrats on the 4HWW anniversary. That book changed everything for me. Thank you.
DOOOODS...... what a great interview totally digestible vernacular I love the way McKenna explains everything with layman terms mixed in with technical jargon. I'm in my 40s and have found that psychedelic said helped me heal from this long Dusty Road called life completely opposite of the way that I took them back in high school which left me a little PTSD along with most of us who have taken her to come out the last time and decided that was enough.... try microdosing so so much better be mindful then heal
Learn punctuation and sentencing. How about throwing in a period and a capital letter to start a new sentence and thot?
Outstanding interview, you can tell that the host has done some thoughtful research by the interestingness, and obscurity of his questions. He’s obviously personally excited to pick Dennis’s brain.
Listening and watching the art in motion helix in the back was mesmerizing. I need to have that!
That's what I was thinking... Were you able to find what product that is?
🙏🕉 you both are very kind for giving this to all of us... thank you💜🤘🏼
So miss the genius of Terence. He could have given so much more, had he lived longer.
If he was alive he maybe thinks different about time zero wave. And maya calender 2012 end of the world on his birthday etc. But its lectures are still alive ✌🏻
He was really something unique.
Tim that painting is really incredible, I’m glad to see paintings bring in modern myths. Joseph Cambell would be proud of that one.
So excited for this. Definitely needed this in my life.

You had me at "sex-crazed cicadas, and more". Never had any conception that I'd thought those words would be combined and used in a phrase, but there they are. Congrats on creating something unique in the world... it's possible you may have been the first to do so.

Tim, I couldn't agree more with your view on peyote and "the First Nations/ Native" people. I'm only a breed and my tribe is not in the southwest but I feel like the tribes there (everywhere) have already lost so much. Let's leave the little they have left before one more cultural, spiritual gift of there's is lost. Thanks for your compassion.
What fatalities??⁉️
I am mesmerized by that dna molecule
I always wondered if psilocybe cubensis does its magic on us inspiring us to grow it as a survival/spreading strategy
Anyone know what the artwork in the back of ferris is?
22:56 I'd use peganum harmala to potentiate mushrooms rather than just taking more mushrooms because... well, I can buy a pound (454 grams) of peganum harmala for $30
And shrooms are $10 a gram, $280 an ounce
$4,480 a pound without a volume discount!
I’ve watched every dentist McKenna and Joe Rogan podcast plus the first episode with you guys! Great stuff enjoyed every time can’t wait to listen to this one!

Am I tripping but do you see the thing on the wall moving?
the synthetic ayah experience is VASTLY superior (deems is better smoked). i prefer a shroom trip still. p envy cubes or cyans. powder em then do it like a tea so ur not consuming them.
I did six grams last night of Albino PE and it was the lightest trip ever. Like it hardly happened at all. Weird. Maybe they’re toying with me?
Tim, if you liked the topic of zoroastrian botanics, check out a book by Mike Crowley "The secret drugs of buddhism". The title could be different, but his research and presentation is very interesting. Maybe an interview? :)
Check out this short paper "Secret Drugs of Buddhism’, Soma, and the Sad State of Entheogenic Anthropology" by Chris Bennett. He deals with some "conclusions" that aren't very factual in above mentioned work. Just to have better view on the topic.
@@aeonikus1 !thank you, i'll surely read it. in no way i take everything as undisputtable from the mentioned book, however the overall direction was thought provoking and there is a handful or two of grains of truth. after all author himself stated many times that his perspective at least partly is hypothetical.
Insensitivity to DMT is much more common than people think. And there's also people who feel very very little effect if not none.
It doesn't surprise me. There's people who can engage weedibles and not feel a thing. Your genetics March to their own rhythm
I once smoked bowls of salvia barely any effect while my friend was on the other side

I respect your work Tim and I respect Mr. McKenna's 40 years of study and investigation as well as for the knowledge and experiences shared by the UDV ( União do Vegetal) but I have my objections and I will only refer to the use of Ayahuasca ( Hoasca).
If the adverse side effects from the use of Ayahuasca ( some of them can be very dangerous) are a low percentage, for those whose suffer from them, the percentage is 100%.
Interesting information but in some points, scary.
Psychedelic Communities? Omg. A return to past experiences that have nothing to do with the spiritual or the ethical.
Btw: In 2006, the Supreme Court of the US granted the UDV the right of use Hoasca tea in its religious sessions.
Kisses Tim, always opening our minds and expanding our horizons.

Dude sounds so like his brother
If it's freebase is that like smoke only
The whole thing in cat poop is called toxic plasmosis Gandhi and what it does makes the mice attracted to the smell of cats pee and also not afraid of them so therefore they get eaten and the cycle starts again freaking crazy and mushroom does that
My perspective on the peyote problems(as a non-user) is there’s a great need(especially with the emergence of permaculture technology spreading through the fringes of the Internet) to teach and involve everyone in the world into nature and to stop grooming ourselves to be ignorant to it because we all have a responsibility to preserve what our ancestors cherished as well as what our kids will need; everything is connected and the extinction of peyote means the degradation of everything else we use until there comes the point where we have degraded far beyond our inbred pets. The people farthest from nature need to be involved with it so we all can have the most beneficial results from it.
I agree with what you say. You need to break up your thots. A run on sentence is 3 lines or more. It has too many things to absorb at once. You write too many run on sentences and it's easy to miss your message.
People who experience nothing from psychedelics have transcended existence.

Tim! My husband blew his brains out 2 blocks from the temple by my home. I want to talk you about it and how I healed myself and why I don’t care

if you dont care that he killed himself you might be either psychotic or he abused you.

Yo!!!😃
So dont take harmalas with mushrooms?
Unnecessary
I am generally kind of interested in La Chorrera and the people who went there, Dennis, Terence, others
Even if you strip out the mysticism the journey there was quite the ordeal, cutting through jungle, having to travel miles, big changes in elevation
I guess it's still basically a village to this day in 2023 (at the time of this comment) and it's not a tourist hub, the people just want to be left alone
