The SC - Tech Tip #2 - Ringing Out Monitors by "Popping" the Frequencies

- In this second video in our Tech Tip series, we cover a technique that has been very successful in not only ringing our monitors, but also aids in preventing the sporadic feedback "gremlins" that can make for a frustrating show.
This is a practical approach to eliminating feedback in monitors and also highlights the benefits of using a tablets to assist in this effort. This technique takes practice and is not meant to eliminate the need to understand and learn the technical aspects of adjusting frequencies.
Equipment used for this video:

Mixer: PreSonus 32R
Monitor: PreSonus 328AI

Great question. This is just my opinion from experience...so take it for what that's worth. I am going to say that a horn loaded 2 way is generally easier to work as a stage monitor.@@josephbisenio4984

Hi Bart, love what you guys do, how about a episode on how you approach mixing up a drumkit, what you watch out for, what mics you use, setting up compression and noise-gates. Thank you👍😀
Absolutely...will add it to our list! I will scream one thing from the top of the mountains! The bottom line of good sounding drums in a LIVE mix is they are properly tuned for a LIVE mix for the genre of music!! I don't care the brand, I don't care about a lot of things....none of it matters if your drums are tuned properly for close proximity mics for a LIVE mix! So, if you are bringing in your ringy jazz kit with no port on kick for a pop band...I will have a more difficult time getting that sound we need. My point is, so much of this falls upon the drummer....as a former drummer, I am in heaven when I work with a drummer who gets it! I have drums, and we can try to do a segment on this topic now that you brought it up. Can you tell I am a bit passionate about this subject?
@@thesoundcouple , that’s great Bart, I’m not a former drummer but I’ve been doing live sound for 40 years, the next thing I always look for is a drummer who can play to a room, so many untrained guys belt away and take little or no responsibility for how they effect the overall sound. Yep! That's about how long it's been for us. We originally got as a speaker lift because our old cabinets were too much for Stacy and I to stack....So when people make a comment on the weight of the CDL's, it's all relative.
@@thesoundcouple That thing is really great, if I had to,... by my self, I could stand up my double 18"s then use the table lift to stack the double 15" two way cabinets on top, it’s wonderful!

Thank you for taking time and effort to produce this content. What is your approach when ringing out multiple bus setup? Say one bus each for main and chorus. You ring them out separately and once the show starts, the main vocal walks all over the stage with their wireless.. and sometimes walks into the crowd right under FOH mains. Also how do you handle omni headset mics like countryman (without IEM)?
Oh my....your question is really tough. First off, I would say the core issue here is education. If a singer ever did this to me, I would be all over their butt on this. Accident's happen, but if they are expecting us to manage them walking within the site of FOH, that approach needs to be corrected. So in a nutshell, if this happens to the SC, that singer is sending the apologies to us. At a speaking event where this may be something you could anticipate, I would consider ringing out the mains in a similar manner. If there is a music portion of that same event, you will likely need to re-EQ for the live music since you will have probable squeezed a lot of life out of the EQ/system. IMO, the countryman omni mics is a matter of making a big trade off in it's application vs. the sound....they will never sound as good, so there should be a really good reason for their use. Super job, Bart! I use almost the same gear as you do and I’ve been on Rick Naqvi from Presonus to do some videos on using UC Surface in real time with mixing at clubs. Keep these kinds of video’s coming, watching you mix is a great learning tool for a lot of us. Would love to see a video on eq and compression settings for individual drums for use with rock bands. Do you use any of the presets that come with Presonus mixers? Excellent vids and topics! Thanks again!
Thanks Rick! We use presets that we have developed over time. It’s amazing how they get can get us 90% there especially when we do a lot of our gigs without sound checks.
Hi Bart.... great video...Just wanted to add a note of clarification that I didn't hear mentioned in the video. You are adjusting the EQ of the monitor/speaker, not the microphone channel, correct? Keep up the great education videos!
Hi Ron - The mic channel EQ is flat. The EQ is assigned to the Aux mix for that monitor. Just to avoid any confusion, I would never recommend in a situation where you are splitting your pre's between a FOH mix and monitor mix that you configure PEQ settings on a channel to impact an aux monitor. On PreSonus, this would be "pre1" vs. "pre2" settings. This is rarely an issue for us (from a musician perspective), but is simply a trade off of not running a dedicated monitor console where the 31 band controls the "overall" tonality control of the mix.
Tech Tip idea - room EQ - ear or analyzer, sample main EQ.
I suppose it would be along the same lines as this video.
Others - Matrices or daisy chaining your multiple subs or tops.
Cool idea for a video series.

Great content. I can’t even use a monitor on floor for karaoke shows. People are clueless about holding a mic down in front of speaker. They make me look bad when it’s them that’s the problem. Great ring out process
That's great! I didn't think about your situation, but yes, I can totally sympathize with you. Live musicians should know better. I can only imagine the education you supply at your own expense. It's like the wedding speeches that hold the mic at their waist in walk out in front of the mains and everyone looks at you when there's feedback!
@@thesoundcouple I told a girl giving a speech please hold the mic as close as you can she cut me off and said I know how to do it. Speech came, she had it 2 feet from mouth people started yelling WE CANT HEAR HER!!

Very informative video. Would you ever save that EQ as a profile so you could use it as a starting point on a gig? There must be times you don’t have time to individually ring out each monitor?
You are correct....especially if I know the band and in situations when you don't need a screaming monitor, copying can result in saving time by not going through this with each mix in detail. However, In the real world, this process goes very quickly for us and is basically integrated into us checking a monitor. I would think of this as a method as a way of optimizing volume. Yes, we do save our show scenes and use them as a jumping off point for the next gig, but often I will change the EQ because it sounds different. Also, there is a baseline DSP setting applied to the speaker but it's a baseline of what sounds good to me and the process demonstrated is adapting to the environment you are in. Hope this helps!

I just have to say in my defense, like a mixed song recording, we are learning that the sound can be drastically different depending on what you are listening to it on. So we are still learning!
Hey SC, question? 1. How do you use your Stage Wifi Router? Do you connect Presonus to it and it sends that signal to your iPad? 2. Do you use a dbx PA 2 type of system for your crossover or do you use the crossover on your speakers? Thanks and keep up the grrrreat work you two!!!!!
The Stage Router Pro is our main router/wireless. So the control port of the mixer is connected to the router so the iPads can control the mixer. We don't use any external crossovers as there is really no need to. The cabinets DSP can be controlled from the back of the speakers or more flexible controls through the Worx Control software which PreSonus provides.
@@thesoundcouple I use a regular netgear router. I like your setup, but I can't seem to find your Stage Router. Where did you purchase yours? The both of you are definitely inspiration.
@@ItsClarkGable We purchased ours at Thomann Music a few years back, but their availability worlwide has been sporadic. There are other similar rack mount options available. Sweetwater has a Waves brand that is similar.

We don't want to endorse any specific brands as we only show you what we use. That said, in your similar situation, we have used the Bose L1 series (with Sub2) , and I was really impressed with them. Really clean and loud for their size.

It's part of UC Surface which is the control software for PreSonus mixers. Most digital mixers include this in their software. Very helpful tool for visualizing frequencies.
If removing sow many points, you eventually dip so many EQ´s that your overall volume on the mic is just softer. And less feedback sensitive. But great video and editing skills bro. Cool couple you guys..
You are correct.....I think of them as little frequency volume knobs, so proceed carefully!

I would tend to agree, but I use UC Surface more than the console. I would imagine that with some practice, you could get proficient on the console as well. Good observation!

Hello Bart, just curious the ring out is cut but will it ruin the vocal mix?
Those adjustments are only applied to the GEQ assigned to that Aux mix. Selecting "pre1" mix allows for independent control of channel PEQ for FOH mix.
You decreased a lot of frequencies. Doe it sounds good then? I think the resulting sound had a lot of hum (low frequencies), no clearity? I'm not sure if it is good enough for vocal?
Frequency cuts can vary by location. Typically, the hotter the monitor, the more you will need to cut. So it's a balance between the volume you need vs. the environment that you are in. Vocalists typically like the sound of the monitors.
So, you increased the gain on the monitor out, and then had to pull back almost every band on the EQ. Isn't this equivalent to leaving the monitor gain alone and just boosting the two or three bands that you didn't have to cut?
Perhaps in theory, but I believe that you need to give the cabinet some energy to work with. You also need to give yourself headroom. Feedback at any of our shows is a rare occurrence..so I maintain our approach works.

Since we split FOH/mon on the same console, we go with pre-EQ for aux sends.
