The SC - Back to Nature
The Sound Couple head off to an outdoor venue which we have never been to before....We are supporting the band for a music in the park gig, which are always a nice in that they are usually a shorter and more relaxed.....but as usual, rain is always seems to be lurking around the corner!
Besides the continue saga of a in-ear mix that continues to be a challenge for one of the band members, the FOH mix we achieve with the gear we have proves to us once again how much of a pleasure it is to work on our system.
Sit back and enjoy and another packed full gig with the Sound Couple!

Wonderful and interesting video.
Great video! I have respect that you mix all those gigs with a rackmixer and an iPad only.
Keep up the good work! love to see youre videos also hate when ppl request monitor trought PA or when go and use a vocal equalized mic on and instrument like ur not doin ur job but well clients and "musicians" being "musicians" hahaha
Sir, do you know why RTA is not working (not showing graphics) on mixes or iPad?
So I’m thinking of buying a presonus mixer should I get the studio live 32 R or the studio live compact 32sc
Hiii can you show how you have the output set up. Like if you send the sub group into the main or the matrix and how that works.
What do you use the slope on to of the subs for?
We call those our drink sliders...check it out! czcams.com/video/ZpK2naPWT2Y/video.htmlsi=6-qk4EwoUFSkCwR_
Great video as usual I have a question I have been follow you guys for a while Because i was hired for a band concert ( if you want to see it is my last video “ jaya concert lawton okc “ ) i saw several videos where some “ sound engineers” recommend to set both subwoofer together and in the center When i was doing the set up for the band i was thinking to set them up as you have under the cabinets but because i didn’t have to much time i set them ups together and in the center as those people recommend I was so nervous but after the concert these musicians congratulated me But my question is Have you ever tried to set up your subwoofers Together and in the center ?
We have for when we need extra low end support and the environment allows for it. We believe there needs to be a balance of what you think is a better sonic choice (arguably) and presenting a clean, safe and professional set up. We would never place subs in the center without regard to presentation and safety regardless on how better we may think it is. Manufacture's build speaker mounts on subs for a reason.
What is the Wi-Fi setup that you guys use for tablet mixing?
We use the NowSonic Stage Router Pro....sadly, they are no longer offered.
Should use revit better on the hinges instead of screw.🤔
They have been holding up so far!
Name of the band?
Belladiva
ROCKED this gig. RIP to that brother ❤. Question: which WiFi extender do you use, and it is connected to your router? (Which router do you use also?) thanks!
We use the NowSonic Stage Router pro/Extender. Unfortunately, they are no longer made, but it still works very well for us. The Waves WRC-1 is another rack mount router that we have seen some use as well.

Do you have kids?
We do not...are you giving any away?
Couldn't agree more on stage volume! If we're playing a show at a venue with good monitor mixing, I'll bring a Princeton Reverb with an amp stand tilted up. No monitors or outdoors then I have a bigger amp, but also can turn down... I've found for players going deaf it's hard to break, but putting amps up on chairs or road cases helps - ears hear better than ankles! So much better when stage volume lets everyone in the band hear each other, but many times it's the drummer - if the drummer doesn't have dynamics, everyone feels they need to turn up. Tough room to mix but again you're doing the best you can - and once it filled in with people sounded great! Hard to balance the mix at soundcheck in an empty room vs. filled with people, but lots of adjustments as you're doing. Definitely inspired to do better from your videos Bart & Stacy!
Appreciate your insights and for going back through our videos...there is a lot of good stuff!
Always tough, but as long as the crowd enjoyed, we can be hypercritical on ourselves, but appreciate the vulnerability to ask for suggestions! The multitrack can reveal a lot, but the overall mix is what's important - so I can see where not gating the kick can be aggravating, but in the whole mix, you don't notice it. Kick mic alternate - the Audix D6 is what I use and has a much more pre-EQ'd sound that cuts a little better without EQ vs. the Shure, which sounds great but needs EQ to sometimes get over the pillowy-nature. It also is smaller so you have flexibility to put it at the edge of the sound hole, or further in for more kick batter head. On the low acoustic guitar player's lack of level - I did see a bunch of pedals and unclear if it was a quality wireless (or what levels) so first thing I'd check would be direct from guitar to DI (with a cable) to see if his wireless and pedals are the culprit. My money is on the wireless. Given he's not really running around the stage, a $10 guitar cable will beat all but the most expensive wireless systems... On the 3 keyboards - I can't see an OH mic and wondering if that had to give way for the extra keyboard channels? May not need it for live, but for the multitrack sometimes even a mono OH over the right shoulder... I'm always surprised when I ask way ahead and then a week ahead for inputs and they change at the gig for some bands... Overall I liked the mixes, and to your point it got better throughout the show. The bass player through those Bongo's sounds great - especially the "You Can Call Me Al" solo!
Appreciate your comments...this is one of our favorites as it was a lot of work, but really gets you thinking about how a mix all fits together. This was a great band and being familiar with the musicians and their instruments can be a critical element in setting a mix...but it can also steer you wrong with your assumptions. Never a dull moment running sound!
Great job as always Bart & Stacy! things like power are rough, but really appreciated that you rolled with it - and waited for the electrician to fix the issue... How often are you providing sound for the same venues and bands, and do you save show scenes as well as channel presets? I see a lot of the same bands - or do you prefer to start with a zeroed out board each time and build the mix from there? On the drummer IEM - thinking that part of the sound person's role is having those extra things that otherwise can stop a show dead in its tracks - like soundbuds, extra 9v for pedals - or even a strap, strings and guitar cable... takes up little room, but when a band doesn't have those little things... Can't wait for more! Learning - and spent the weekend organizing my gear in the garage and getting ready to sell a rolling rack case I haven't used in 7 years - the tubs are where it's at!
For most shows, we usually start from scratch with our base project/scene and channel presets. If there a just a couple of tweaks, like a sub player, or one less player, I will just modify an existing scene. Good luck with your gigs!
I've had problems with the TF series of consoles, especially when connecting the stage boxes to the consoles via Dante. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I've now vowed to avoid the TF series.
This was our stab at that...not against trying new consoles, but considering the time, effort, and the support...I didn't want to take that risk as you could see, enough still fell on our shoulders.

We’re did you guys got that aluminum stand that folds what company. Like to get one of them. Thanks
It is listed and linked in our About section of our channel - unfortunately at this time it is unavailable through Amazon.
Both sound great at 4', and coupled with a sub you get plenty of highs and mids. The one thing that would be great to test (and show) is where the 12's do more - at distance, SPL level at 100', etc. But those kind of tests (outdoor or indoor) take a lot more time to pull off, and then wind, etc. can color the subjectivity. If you really wanted to have fun, you could set up with a blind switch and not tell viewers and see who gets it right - and who is influenced by box size vs. their ears. Thanks for spending the time on this!
We wish we had more time to make videos...it would be fun to do some suggestions like yours!
I really dig the third band that played on this bill, what is their name?

Thanks! We’ve considered it, but being a 42 year old van…
Hey guys! I’m looking to start my own sound company and am curious to how you got started? Is there much money in it?
Yes..there is a lot of investment. When I started, I was working and both of us still maintain a full time day job that was and still provides us the funding of gear purchases. Honestly, I really don't know how the bigger companies are able support reasonable ROI when it seems like they are always purchasing new gear to keep up with everyone else. We believe in making investment when it makes sense, not to maintain the latest.
@@thesoundcouple Gotcha! Yeah I figured cause of how expensive gear is. My worry is not getting enough jobs to make gear investments worth it. Is that something you struggled with when you all first started?
Love your videos! Can 2 DCL 12p's cover a group of 100 to 150 without a sub. I just perform in small to medium sized churches. Small band, southern gospel. Thanks!
Sounds reasonable...we have several video's showing the cabinets in action to assist with your decision. Appreciate you watching!
Hello my name is Terry I was wondering in the future might you consider showing your viewers your equipment and connections and how everything operates together. I am fairly new and interested in your profession and would like to do it. Sincerely Papa t
Hi Terry - FYI....all comments are summarized and sent to our CZcams account...no need to post the same question several times as we see them all. Yes, it't probably time for a refresh and we will consider doing a video on that once things slow downs for us. Thanks for the suggestion!
Should wear a belt for ur back . Lifting that heavy equipment.
Thanks for the suggestion...we work out on a regular basis and lift with our legs. Most of our lifts are 50lbs or less which we believe we should be able to handle that when doing this type of work.
Sounds really good. Great job.
Thank you! This was a nice change of pace!
How you deal with the heat inside ur rack. No space for air flow.
There is space on the sides and the back is open....never had an issue and don't even feel any head coming out. The mixer generates a bit, but they are designed to be in racks and vent on the side which it's able to do. The other gear doesn't even get warm.
Bart, Stacy... first off...love your videos. Watched nearly all of them. I've had lots of similar experiences on the road. I've been doing sound for a Beatles Tribute band here in Wisconsin for 24 years now and just recently purchased 4 CDL12P's and 4 CDLSub18's for the band. Quick question: The CDLsub18 manual says " Do not attempt to pole mount loudspeakers atop ground-stacked CDL Sub18s." Yet I've seen you stack 2 CDL12's on top of double stacked subs many, many times. I know you have CDL12's, not the P version. I thought you had CDLsub18's? So, have you had any issues with stacking 2 CDL12's on top of 2 CDLsub18s?
We have not had any issues with double stacking...I may be incorrect, but feels like this statement was added by the lawyers. We do double stack over the CDL 18s which do lock together so the whole thing is coming down if someone runs into it. At the end of the day....you just need to make sure you have insurance, unfortunately.
@@thesoundcouple thanks for the quick reply. My subs do not have locks (they must be different models). Looks like I'll get me some straps, for more security. Great products tho, I tested out a single top with a single sub (x 2) and could only get my mains fader to -20 (usually at -5) for my normal volume (85-90dbs at 40 ft). Might be time to reset my gain structure.
@@michaelst7680 There are two different versions of subs in the CDL series. We have a pair of the latest Sub18 (they do not lock) and four of the older discontinued CDL 18s (they do lock). From a stability standpoint, I would not hesitate to stack on the Sub18 - they have a larger footprint than the 18s, but you need to do what you are comfortable with. If adding the straps makes it feel more comfortable, that's ok. Ground-stacking any cabinets is going to come with risks and we cannot prevent Bozo from being stupid and knocking cabinets over. In all of our years, we have been fortunate that this has never happened or come close to happening!
Hey guys, great work again! How are the 328ai holding up? I seen an amazing deal at music go round website but they misadvertised and no longer will ship their larger speakers and gear, im still heart broken lol I keep asking if they’ll reconsider for me. Really want to get my hands on those speakers something about them is so appealing to me
They have been workhorses for us over the years. As straight up monitors, there are probably better choices, but these sound great when they are dialed in. Also, we can throw anything at them and they take it....don't worry about them at all.
@@thesoundcouple love that for you guys. Keep up the good work

Gorgeous Venue. You prefer the E901 vs the Beta 91a? Just curious. We typically use the Beta inside along with an Audix D6 outside. That would be for heavier rock.
Have never tried the Beta 91a - but I have heard that it's very similar to the Sennheiser. Actually...one band we do work with uses the Beta 91 - it's works out, but would honestly need to hear it on more kits to really understand its' characteristics.

@@thesoundcouple Excellent! Thank you for the replay.
Hey guys, big fan I love all the videos. I have a question. I just picked up a pair of CDL 12s. They sound great and they’re fairly loud. I like them a lot. I’m doing a show for 500 people in the fall. Do you think two CDL 12s can get the job done if I push it or would you recommend getting two more?
The type of event and environment always play a role in this decision. Is it a concert paid for by 500 attentive attendees or is it an event that you will be part of that will have 500 attendees? The type of music is always important as well...is it Bluegrass band or Heavy Metal? Through out all of our videos, you see we can be in a small room pushing it, to a hotel ballroom and we are trying to keep a lid on the volume. I am saying this because we can't in good conscience tell you to go out and spend money. It is pretty surprising how easily people spill unvetted opinions on what people need. If you know your system and the event, you should be able to determine what you need. If you're unsure and want to do the gig...then it's always nice to be able to bring in more. We have gotten burned both ways...not bringing enough, or brining in too much....part of the risks of what we do. Normally, we do get it right! Good luck!
Best drum roll I’ve seen in awhile 🥁
and we happen to catch it!
Could be worth contacting the MixingStation app people to have them add Presonus to their list of compatible mixers... Then it's just one app to learn across multiple mixers. I've used it on my Mackie DL1608 and if I need to mix on something else, I am somewhat familiar. Bummer Presonus hasn't made one!
