  • The Sound Couple is finally off to their first gig with their new PreSonus CDL10P and Sub18 system!
    Check out how the first gig went and watch the Sound Couple do all of the work of a more challenging load-in/out at a new venue for them! No gig is ever completely perfect, but the new speakers worked well, but our wireless DMX system did not.....so stick around for some bonus troubleshooting!
    The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
    PreSonus UC Surface
    PreSonus CDL12
    PreSonus CDL18s
    PreSonus 32R
    PreSonus SW5E
    PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
    PreSonus AVB-D16
    Please see our "About" for a more comprehensive list of gear we use.

    I used to do sooo many gigs like this....hotels with never ending pushes. I live in a very rural area now, we dont have hotels out here!
    I do completely different types of gigs out here, far less music...which I am fine with. I do church stuff, school stuff, conferences, rodeos, auctions, parades, expos, etc... and a little music. But Im home for dinner a lot more often these days, compared to the days of doing mostly corporate party bands.
    I will be 53 next month, I have been doing sound for a living, for 35 years. About a year ago I began selling off some of my bigger stuff, and have begun replacing it with some smaller lighter stuff. Most of the gigs I do now, I do by myself...so its getting to that time in life where I cant just schlep all the big heavy stuff, all the time, as well as I used to.
    But honestly, the smaller stuff is making as much or more money than the bigger stuff. The non music related gigs pay a little better, and are typically less stressful...and they dont go until the wee hours of the morning!

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 10 dny

      Glad to hear it! Not going to the wee hours is definitely a plus and a game changer at this age in life!
      Most of the time we just shake our heads at some of the load ins at the newer places - the design doesn't match for convenience and sound experience!
      Thanks for sharing!

    Thanks team, a pleasure to watch as usual. Glad the new gear was a success. when using gear I’m not familiar with I keep a pdf version of the manual on my laptop or iPad. I’ve even saved a few short CZcams posts to help with settings, configuration or tips. You could film some “reminder or tips” posts just in case.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 měsíci

      That's a great idea...we did that with our CDL cases and I have referenced that for when Stacy isn't around. Should consider that too for the Donner DMX gear. The thing to remember is that they are different color lights to set for the frequency, but in operation mode, they always blink the same color...the transmitter operations blinks red, and the receiver blinks in green. Those are also used in the selected frequency and that only displays briefly when you turn them on. It would be much easier if they just blinked with the same frequency color. Steady light on...blinking light - transmitting/receiving.

    Bart, I think I understand the Pre1/Pre2 you were talking about when ringing out the monitors. The confusion for me is that not all of the Aux sends have GEQ available. I I am using Aux 10 output for a monitor, there is no GEQ(32 band) EQ available.
    Thank you and Stacy for sharing what you two do!

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Excellent point....yeah, that's a dilemma. If any of the mixes are in-ears, you may be able to get by on those or if you have a monitor with some eq'ing built into it, or an accommodating musician that just needs to hear themselves a bit or just an instrument with light vocals. Otherwise, you are probably looking at a dedicated monitor console. We aren't opposed to a dedicated console, but we have learned to adopt and appreciate the speed and simplicity of managing a single console.

    Talking about muscle memory, do you all get massages or yoga or something to stay in top shape. Bart talked about the back at 11:00. I wondered about this while you all were loading the van. Maybe with one to three gigs per month, you have lots of down time to rejuvanate. (sp.) You might call this personal maintenance as compared to your van maintenance series earlier. How you you keep the back and legs in top shape?
    Yes on the lift and twist (11:00) - lifting a pencil or sheet of paper can throw the back out if done incorrectly!
    More questions and comments on ergonomics that equipment - hmmm???
    Such a tight travel space from van to venue---it sucks. Now you need slip resistant footwear (for the kitchen.) The new speakers should great. Thanks.

    Love the video as usual, love getting a notification to say you guys have a new vid up! I would love a video on you really digging into eqing the room. For example, and boomy room. Also, with the cdl10p, do you think this setup, 2 subs and 2 of the cdl10, would cover a crowd of 250 people I doors? Thanks!

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks for the comment! Room coverage is so subjective and depends on your application and requirements. For example, for room coverage, are you providing a paid concert experience where every seat needs clear audio at X dB, or is it a multi-purpose event where if some of those 250 people could want to hear the band better so they move closer? These are completely two different requirements that the same 250 people could be attending. We have literally hundreds of videos showing what we do with ours that can hopefully help with your own conclusions! We have done several gigs with ours with 250 people, but we could change our approaches depending on what those 250 people were there for and what type of an event it was.

    I use similar wireless DMX units made by Chinly. This past weekend I was running sound for a band at an event. There was also a DJ setup with his own rig as he was MC as well. As soon as I walked in I saw his flashing green lights...he had the same units I did. Mine change frequencies by inserting a pen or similar object into a small hole and pressing a button. The color of the LED light changes to denote which frequency you're on. Yours might be similar.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 měsíci

  • @djrickysmith
    @djrickysmith Před 2 měsíci

    When I was a light engineer doing shows from 2010 to 2013, I used wireless sticks like them. One tip so there isn't so many frequency problems, use one wireless stick to the area (tree) then run dmx cable out to the rest of the fixtures from the out of the first fixture on that tree.. each wireless stick should be able to handle up to 7 fixtures. and also I forgot to mention, I use to plug the wireless stick into a dmx cable up to the fixture, so just in case something went wrong, I could access the stick without lowering the rig. Not sure if you understood what I'm texting there.. If I have time this week, I'll try and shoot a quick video for you

    Hello Bart and Stacy,
    Just wanting to let you know

    Keep up the good work!!

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 měsíci

      Thank you! It does come up a bit in comments or even at the gig...why are you mic'ing the drums? There are exceptions and variations...but in general, our approach is to mic the drums.

    • @Richard1977
      @Richard1977 Před 2 měsíci

      @thesoundcouple Hey, keep on mic'ing the drums! Because I really do like it.
      There is a point in the video where you first hear the unamplified drum and where you start to increase the volume of the PA. That was the moment where your comment really locked in for me: Big stadium drums everywhere which add so many levels of experiencing the music to the performance.
      Added to the already known fact that low end adds to really experiencing the performance. The guys of Churchfront did a video on that a while ago.
      About that compression and such:
      You do know I meant CZcams's compression and digital crap?

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 měsíci

      @@Richard1977 Hi Richard - CZcams is definitely a double edge sword. With the type of content we produce, they keep pushing the boundaries in making it very challenging for us to sustain or provide the type of content we would really like to do. We are constantly working around their restrictions in either omitting, taking a hit, or compromising the content. We realize that a lot of this is even out of their control, but there is a lot that could be improved for all.

    • @Richard1977
      @Richard1977 Před 2 měsíci

      @thesoundcouple Not wanting to be the negative guy in the comment section, but in the end it all comes down to money and extracting every last cent possible by certain parties and caring more about that than content.
      In the end that will lead to dumb, contentless content that is only about likes and creating income for CZcams thru commercials.
      Sometimes I wonder if we already haven't reached that last point (on commercials) because when I cast your video on my TV I get twice as many commercials as when I watch on my phone.

      As we have mentioned in the past, we don't typically do walk throughs or in some cases, we aren't provided a lot of details. To offset this we try to give us plenty of time and have a good system to transport gear and have all of the gear we would need with us. @@thesoundcoupleWell, your way of handling gear wouldn't also be my way.
      I can see why you do it the way you do and it makes for a lot of gear in a small van. But it is cumbersome and a lot of handling and lifting. It even makes me think that your load in and out could be much quicker.
      I am more the road case (flightcase in the Netherlands/Europe) -guy as it is a standard way of working here. A ramp on a small van and lift gate on a truck are also part of that.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 měsíci

      This cannot be completely avoided. Our approach is to think of the stage as part of our mix and not as separate entities...we don't try to mix over the stage, but instead, mix with it. So in the case of stage vocal monitor, we will take whatever is coming off that and mix our FOH with it....for example, we may end up slightly cutting some lows on a vocal because it's coming off woofy sounding from the stage. Of course, the bigger your stage/room, the more separated they become. This is why we love using a tablet for mixing since it allows us the freedom to hear and adjust from several angles....not just perched at some fixed point out front.

      Kelly-Shu mounting system is an option for the bass drum, (for mounting a bass frequency mic) if there’s no port hole. But there might be a slight issue getting the xlr cable through the air vent hole. Idk, just a thought. But that’s also on the drummer’s part to decide. IMO, one mic for the bass drum is plenty. Especially for small-to-medium sized indoor venues. Condenser mics have a purpose and place of use, but they can sometimes also create a challenge. Great vid and teamwork as always!

    hello! I spoke to specialists from presonus in Brazil but I don't think they are that specialist... could you answer my question about the StudioLive 32R PreSonus Rack Mixer? The rack has 24 preamplifiers, and can be connected to another similar one and double the number of channels. However, does the software already have 48 native channels in it, being able to duplicate channels or does it only open the other channels when another 32R is connected to it? I would like to duplicate all the channels, using just one rack and have the entire band duplicated to make the monitor, like in the past on the Yamaha LS9. and I also wanted to know what the minimum latency is that it can be connected to a computer. I was thinking about using it with the waves sound grid, with external puglins. I follow your channel from time to time and I admire you so much! good gigs!

      You have a lot going on! If you are not familiar with the StudioLive Facebook groups, we would highly encourage you to check them out because there the groups are very active with users doing all sorts of configurations. To answer your basic questions, the SL mixers are limited to 32 XLR/analog and 64 AVB/USB channels...period. You can't add mixers to expand channel counts.

    what possessed sennheiser to make the front of the 901 so damn wide? lol Used to have one, but have since ditched it in favour of the Shure SM91, and more recently the SE BL8, which is spectacular as a single mic solution. The 91 always needed an outside mic in conjunction.
    I'm rather interested on what you've got going on with that beta 52... I've never felt I needed to cut any top end out of that mic, in any genre... and most times still wanted fairly significant boosts in the top end

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 měsíci

      If you look at the frequency response of a Beta 52, there is a significant bump in the 4-6k which is exactly what I backed off. We have an EV 868 which probably would have been a good choice here too as it's flatter. Our 901 we use mostly for convenience, and it sounds good too once you get it dialed in.

    • @dustinthiessen
      @dustinthiessen Před 2 měsíci

      @@thesoundcouple yeah, I'm familiar with the B52 boost, but I still always find myself typically boosting more most of the time. I wonder if there's something in the presonus that's actually giving you more attack yet, like the gate potentially? I'm not suggesting you shouldn't have cut it. based off of what the camera audio picked up, it absolutely needed cut. I'm just curious why you and I have such different experiences with the same microphone...

      @@dustinthiessen I am thinking it has more to do with the tuning, the size of the drum and the beater. We didn't show it in this video, but with permission, I like to down with an unfamiliar kit and hear it acoustically so I know what I am dealing with.

    Set once and forget gear that fails after having worked flawlessly for years is indeed a nightmare because who the hell remembers how to operate it? That's actually one of my concerns setting up my system, and as a result, I'm simplifying to the max 😂. There's many cheap toys here in China for PA, I don't mean that in a bad way, but it's easy to overcomplicate a setup. I won't touch DMX until there's an affordable automated solution. I prefer to hire a light operator with gear 🤣

    When you refer to "two box mode vs one box mode" with regard to the midrange, is that just the setting on the cabinets? You are still using one box but thinking of setting it in two box to alleviate electronically the boosted upper mids that you don't care for. Do I have that right?

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 měsíci

      You are correct...the CDL10P's have a "Mode" setting. 1 box through 6 box mode. These are presets are what PreSonus recommends based onn how many you are using in your array.

      @thesoundcouple The German brand HK Audio used to have shirts with almost the same text as a promotional item somewhere halfway the 2000s.
      The last sentence on the "other requests" was a bit different tho.
      It was: And no, you can't borrow my Sharpie.
      I should still have one of those...
      As it was copyright free text, it got used for company branded shirts for my buddies company.
      And believe it or not, those shirts got so popular that techs from other companies started wearing them. Best almost free (around $5 per shirt back then) advertisement he got as his company was getting linked with events we never even heard of!
