  • The Sound Couple returns to a venue they haven't been at for many years to support the band for a wedding.
    For this event, we put the band all on in-ears and the bass player left his amp behind. Minimizing the stage volume in cavernous venues really helps clean up the sound. The CDL's came through again in providing great coverage and clean top end on a wide stage.
    The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
    PreSonus UC Surface
    PreSonus CDL12
    PreSonus CDL18s
    PreSonus 32R
    PreSonus SW5E
    PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
    PreSonus AVB-D16

      Thanks Greg! One of our goals was to show our gear out in the battle field...the good and the bad. As much as product reviews can be helpful, they are really just an addendum to marketing material. We happen to use the gear we do because it works for us. We also try to give people good insights to what it can do and what we do to pull it all off.

    Rooms like that with those recessed decorative ceilings certainly can present a challenge; it really helps when the band you're working with "get it" and play to the room. Pretty sure I've said something similar on another of your video's. I mixed for a fundraiser a couple weeks ago; the room is an old chapel, the "stage" was at the opposite end of the organ, beneath the balcony seats... The stage was a vestibule of reverb, and my word; it was a challenge... I earned my cheque that day!!

      Overall, I think technology has helped us combat challenging acoustics. I have said it before as well, but it still continues to amaze me how little priority is placed into venue acoustics.

    Another great gig. It’s always a dilemma between hard and soft cases, we currently have a mixture. I find it’s driven by what transport you will be using. If it’s only the van then soft cases are the way to go but if I’m using the big trailer then it’s hard cases all the way - they are just so easy to move. I find flight cases allow you to be more organised by using draw cases etc. cost is another factor as the flight cases soon add up.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 lety

      All excellent points.....exactly the same here. We used to use more caster based cases back when we used a trailer more often but they are not as practical to use in a van pack. We understand that there are ramps available, but I am convinced we would not be able to then carry the full show that we can pull off out of van if we were using road cases....we would run out of room.

      The Chauvet lights (4BAR-Flex) in the back have a center hole built into the cross bar that slips over the Ultimate stand pole. The fixture is not allowed to slide down the pole by a pin (provided by the Chauvet attached to the fixture) that is inserted through the the light tree stand and the fixture rests on that pin. The yellow box was a power distro that we provided by the venue. There were not many wall outlets in this ballroom, so it was nice they did this, but was necessary. Thanks for watching!

    Curious question, Why don't you angle the CDL12's towards the dance floor and place your subs in front of the stage in the middle for better bass coverage? Don't you get phase cancellation having the subs placed like that? I would of thought subwoofer coupling is a better option?

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Před 2 lety +3

      Ohhhh, what a can of worms :) I would agree, we could have angled the CDL12's in a bit, but they do have 120 degree of horizontal coverage, so I guess we were testing that! Sub placement, I can't go there. This is math vs logistics.....logistically, we place our subs on each side of the stage regardless of what any math says and it's a very common and traditional placement for them. I can only imagine what would happen to our subs if we were placed in middle of the stage for our gigs...they would make a wonderful drink stands and beat up much more. We try to keep the PA subtle and minimize any hazards as much as we can...so the subs go to the side.

    • @thesoundcouple

      This is an educated guess, because the room acoustics play such a big role in volume...especially in this room. I would estimate that we could have gone at least 103-104dB from 40 feet or so pretty easily. We would not ever mix that loud for an event like this. These cabinets are not large for their class and you need keep that in perspective...we feel they produce excellent quality, but would probably go with a horn loaded cabinet if maximizing volume is a high priority.

      Hi Thomas - The "p" models were not offered when we bought our first set of CDL's. Since we don't own the "p's", I can't offer any opinion on sound difference. Other differences is that the "p" are made out of plastic, instead of wood, and they can't be controlled over a network with Worx control software. However, I believe they have an LCD screen which allows you to adjust DSP.

Would you include a hydraulic scissor lift cart to help get stuff up onto higher raised stages? Hey thanks! I am not going to fully disagree with you, but we cleared with the wedding coordinator as I have mentioned in other videos the lack of storage venues provide and this place had none as well....sometimes we can use the green room, but in this case it was on another floor on street level public access, so that wasn't going to happen. Another option would have been the hallway there, but that was full of their crap and we would have contributed to the already in place fire hazard and probably gotten yelled at for making it worse. Lastly, I suppose a bigger sound co would have wheeled their cases back into the trucks in the loading dock and we don't get paid enough for that! As I mentioned in the video, it's not uncommon for these make shift storage spaces to grow as band members and in this case, the photographers add to the pile of things that have no place to go. Once the lights were down, I don't think anyone even noticed it. Once we had clearance from the wedding coordinator, we are good as far as I am concerned....If someone above her has a problem with it, then it's on them to figure out where this stuff supposed to go.
      Thanks for watching!

      Yes. The gigs we do, we are directly hired by the band.

    You're lifting an electrical ground? You should never ever do that. I hope your insurance company isn't subscribed to your channel. You can lift signal ground if you have ground loop.

      We are lifting because our PSU for our mixer occasionally doesn't work well with some GFI outlets and will trip them repeatedly. Not sure what other options there are when faced with this challenge....the rest of the system remains grounded.

    Your sound system is rubbish. Using commercial movie cinema speakers will prevent peoples hearing getting damaged

      Can you provide us an example of a manufacturer who provides these solutions for pro audio? What do you use?

      I installed Commericial cinema woofers & tweeters into plastic molded PA cabinets, & cinema subwoofers are in plywood cabinets.

      The Tannoy V300 PA speakers are a solution for pro audio, (for indoor events). For outdoors they will not have enough power for a larger audience of people.

      @@Tweel_Weight_Plate Typical internet troll...... "My homemade shit is better than anything commercially available!" Maybe it is, but these types of comments don't help anyone. Besides, I have no idea how you can judge the quality of their system from the footage they provided. 90% of it was captured behind the speakers (so you are only hearing stage volume) and even the small amount that was captured in front of the speakers was captured with a cell phone. Go back under your bridge, troll!

      Do you think music turned up ''really really loud'' is what's needed to get people up dancing?
