    Got my Kingbright LEDs in today! Was very surprised at how small that they were. They were only about 0.10 " square! I guess the microscope really made them seem much larger than they are. Very excited for the Mosfet to arrive and to make the repair and the swap.

    Hi jeff awesome channel. Quick question probably a dumb one but ill ask anyway. If i wanted to add a Led my car somewhere and i was using ohms law to figure out what size resistore i need what voltage do i use for the calculation. Would i use just 12 volts or 12.6 for where my battery usually is when i start the car or do i us 14 since thats what the alternator is putting out once the car is running. Ive tried to search the web for the answer but no luck.

    Really enjoy your videos and I might have to see about sending a cluster out of my 2001 silverado to you sometime. For some reason it will be working fine then will suddenly go back into power up like it does when you first cycle the key on. I suspect probably a broken solder joint just from learning from your videos. Two questions, is there any way that you could do a video on how the displays work on the GM products? I think it would be a neat thing to find out how they work, and could you recommend to me a good blue LED replacement for my dash backlighting? After seeing this backlighting I might like to do a blue backlighting on my truck as well. I understand that on the 01 truck that the backlighting is just plug and play but I would really like to have your opinion on which LED upgrade bulb to use.

      The easy assumption is that the engineers under spec'd the part. But I've noticed a pattern with terrible solder joints. If you look closely the MOSFET heat sink tab solder joint it fractured and comes right off the board.

    • @russellhltn1396

      @@jeffescortlx Which raises the question if the solder joint is the cause it or is the solder joint the result of the mosfet overheating. It might be interesting to scope that out and make sure everything is well within what the replacement can handle. I'm wondering if it's possible the voltages rise as the display ages and causes more kickback to the mosfet. Or perhaps a high voltage until the display filament warms up.

    @Jeff awhile back I commented in a video and asked about what kind of LED bulbs you used for the 04 Chevy Tahoe Dash Cluster assemblies. You replied but I forgot to write it down but the history in CZcams won't let me go back that far.
    Also if you have the manual control knobs for the dial climate which were manual what bulbs can one use for those or would the same one work?
    Also where do you get the servo motors or stepper motors as I believe their called?
    Thanks for the great Vids and good narration.
    If you have time sometime maybe if you could create a smaller length video describing your procedures doing your soldering, equipment, parts used and why (quality/etc) vs other brands. I order my stepper motors from a supplier located in Shen Zhen. But if you only need enough to do one cluster they wouldn't work for you as they deal in large quantities by the rack.
      Most of my videos list my tools in the video description. But not this video, because this video is for a different cluster generation.

      @@jeffescortlx Hey, Jeff thanks for that. I'll probably have to find some good stepper motors off eBay or something. I get Leary but if it does what it should then I'd be fine.
      Browsing the Mouser site I've come to realize it's a very large website. Is there a certain link or part number you have for the led lights that you use for replacement? Hopefully the ones in the dash cluster, the headlight switch and HVAC control board in the manual dual zone HVAC. That would be helpful to find a part number for the LED chips/bulbs?
      I may or may have not mentioned but before I repair mine I plan on getting a used board from the junkyard to practice my skills. I don't have the automatic solder sucker but have a manual one which should be enough I think for doing my LED bulbs in my various switches, cluster, etc

      @@dtnel yes I saw you mentioned that you were buying a practice board. I am curious of what they will charge you. Junk yards are good at knowing what parts are valuable and high in demand. GM clusters are one of those things. My local junk yard gets $175 for them. Sorry I don't have a mouser link for you, I buy my parts at high volume directly from the manufacturer over seas.

    • @dtnel
      @dtnel Před 5 lety

      jeffescortlx Maybe a dead board would be the way to go because as you stated used boards are expensive.
      I found these bulbs in this generation of board you’re working on as there’s about 40 that mouser lists when I searched 604-AA3528... It shows some as cut tape but if I want to buy a lot then I could go with the reel but that’s to many lights.
      I need to do some more searching in your videos and see if you listed the part number as you did in this video.
      Picked up a scope a couple weeks ago. Need to change some things around in garage to make room for it and have workspace.
      I’ll go poke around your 04 style videos to see if I can find the bulb type. It’s the breaks of being new to this part of stuff in automotive repair. Funny thing is my 06 impala has no backlight issues (knock on wood) but the Tahoe has plenty in the dash cluster, light switch, 4wd switch, manual heat backlighting. They must’ve used some bad suppliers at that time, tech changed in 2 years obviously.

      I guess you could if you really tried. They won't fit very well, you'll have to bend the lead straight out and make it as flat as possible. And then I hope that it clears the middle white reflector layer. But usually 5 mm LEDs focus a light forward in a beam rather than spread it out like a surface mount, so you might get really bright spots directly underneath the LEDs.

      @ellesmerewildwood4858 Před 5 lety

      @@jeffescortlx I can't speak for the logic in submarines for red ambient lighting, perhaps it's different when the whole room is lit with red ambient light. Imagine if the entire control room was dark except for one bright red light source. For me at least, the red cluster being the only source of red light in the car just seems annoying especially if you're driving for hours. My daily has blue and it's quite comfortable.
      Unfortunately, in the spare car, the back lighting is incandescent with red filters which would mean removing the filters leaving the lighting white and probably uneven.
      I'd certainly change to blue if I could find good led replacements for the incandescent lamps.
      As you've said, there are many replacement leds on ebay but all cheap unrefined Chinesium.
