What do you guy's think of the color combo?
For more information on installing LED's in this style of cluster see:

I love that color combo! It's honestly the color combo I went with on my car, just never can find clear needles, and seem to be forever stuck with those orange needles.
@@ChucksBasix what year is yours?
Hi Jeff, question for ya. Where do you get your 5mm flat top LED's with built in resistor?
@@XXXXXXXXXZZXXXXXXXXX I buy them directly from the manufacturer that sells out of Shenzhen. They only sell in large quantities to wholesalers.
Like the color change. I have been looking at something similar but to me the ice blue background seems to have a cleaner look to me just don't know what color to do the needles with.
@ 7:25 "Let's check for display fanspin" Someone has been watching Louis Rossmann, LOL.
I was wondering how long it would take for someone to catch that. That was quick.
Late to the comments but you are just really smooth, you know your stuff very well, have a wellspring of electrical engineering knowledge and are not a 'look at me I am so smart person' in the least. Humble and smart to great qualities. I have 0 interest in the repair of Chevy clusters, zero, none... nada but you make it interesting and relaxing Thank you for the continued well made videos sir!
Great job! Like the blue LEDs. Can't wait to see the fix on the TV as well.

Very very nice .I like the look alot.
Nice fix!
Looks great, Jeff. Nice creative fix on the fet. I always ask people how they would fix something like that. Dont panic #1. lol. Your just like with the bargain finds and dumpster diving. Currently working on a samsung refrigerator with a bad logic board. I dont know about you but I live on other peoples waste. Lol
Some people gamble, some people drink and some do drugs. My thrill is fixing garbage! : p
On my 03 Silverado Cluster, it twitches and has intermittent use. I pull it out, unplug the wires, and its fine again, getting to be a pain because sometimes it does it every other day sometimes multiple a day, but all gauges and lights work, could it be the connectors or wiring?
Awesome and very nice!
thats a great job
I think it is time for some more videos. I enjoy watching them and have learned a lot from them. I don't think you do other LEDS swaps for like window switches and everything else to get rid of that ugly Aqua color. As of right now I have a 07 Avalanche that I have replace cluster green back ground and with white needles. Also already replace LEDS in all window, headlight, 4x4 switch and more. I am just waiting on some more 2012 green smd LEDS to get here from mouser. To do everything else, even the factory radio. So thank you for your vids and for inspiring me to get into cluster repair.
If you successfully pull off a SMD LED swap give your self a pat on the back. Seriously, not many people can can complete it without complications, especially without good tools like microscope and hot air or multiple soldering stations. I have done complete interior LED swaps, I just haven't had my schedule line up with the job for filming.
@@jeffescortlx It hasn't been that complicated yet. I actually find it to be relaxing. I use a microscope that use a hdmi output to a computer screen and use a hakko 888 and 2 $50 soldering stations like the ones you use, hakko desoldering gun and a cheap hot air station. Which they all work great. So by the end of this weekend should have mine full interior LED swap done. Then i got one other customer that wants me to do the same with his 09 but blue. Wanted to do mine first to see what I will need for smd's. Only problem I will find with his is that the climate control panel buttons have a green backing on them which I noticed with mine.
Great look... Thumbs up as always... Constantly waiting for the next video!
What king of led are being installed
3528
jeffescortlx do they need a resistor installed in order for them to work
That's awesome
I love the color combination. Where do you get those SMD Led to buy. I have a Ford 2016 Ranger and some of the LED's are blown and I need to change them.
See the sticky comment for more LED information.
How can I find purple led's and how do you reinstall the needles correctly so they want be off with powered up?
Thanks so much for the in-depth video, I learned a lot!
Couple of questions. Can you recommend a microscope that is less expensive but will magnify enough to make a ckt board repair? If I was going to do repairs a lot then I wouldn't mind getting the one you are using but I will probably repair a couple or three boards at first then maybe an occasional one later.
Do you have part numbers for the LED's and where to purchase quality ones?
And a bonus question, my tint causes my dash to be unreadable during the day. Is there some way to add some additional LED's for daytime illumination? that stay on without turning on the parking lights. Maybe something shining back on the cluster?
Here is more information on the LED part number:
czcams.com/video/y35oEE5v58w/video.html
And here is an example of a low cost microscope:
czcams.com/video/HENFD993E08/video.html
Great job. What kind of solder are you using to bridge those connections? Assuming the wire is solder wire?
The jumper wire is just solid strand lead wire.
Nice job , I like the colors a lot ! :-) . Did I see or hear on.a video of yours that you were in Idaho & if so could I ask where?
Sorry I'm not in Idaho.
Already subscribed long while ago.and love your fixes on all the clusters, that's very interesting for me to watch! Would absolutely love to see your fix on that 50 inch Vizio tv!!!!
Welcome to another episode of "Instrument Cluster Horror Theater." Tonight's featured assault on Jeff's corneas will be a man-scream-inducing, purple and bright yellow LEDs..." (powers on the cluster board and screams 'Auuggh! My eyes, my eyes!') This presentation will be followed by an episode of Unsolved Mysteries - Jeff sees a huge diagonal gash across the board and asks "What the hell did the previous guy do to this cluster?" Check your local TV listings for showtimes.
Great job on this cluster, Jeff.
Jeff what kind of wire you use for the jumper? To jump from stepper to the trace
For short runs I use the left over leads from my lamps. On the long runs I use coated electromagnet wire.
Do you fix all gauges? I have a 2003 Lincoln Navigator gauges that I had the key programmed but they were unable to correct the mileage, is that something that you could do and if so how much . A response would be greatly appreciated Thanks Tony
What happened to the original cluster?
neat an clear
I have a 2005 pontiac g6 i need my gauges fixed both my mph and rpm needles twitch alot before doing their sweep, and looking to color change the lights
Sorry I'm currently not setup for the G6.
Is it crucial to solder the tiny square LED's to 2 of the pads of the circuit board? Will it not light up if they're touching all 4..
It will cause a shot if you use a 2 lead LED on a set of pads designed for 4.
Shellac would off seal the burned substrate and bear substantial heat without deterioration. try it sometimes
Cool fix though 👌
Fantastic repair especially on the LED bulbs replacement. Very professional work bro. What size are these bulbs and where to buy them from?
They are a 3528. You can get genuine ones from Mouser, digi-key, Newark element 14.
I know this video is old but how many bulbs are needed? I want to do blue for my needles and white replacing the aqua.
I've always wanted to play around with the needles on the gauge cluster, you can make it show something ridiculous, like doing 240 kph at 0 rpm.
Sure! Most 03-06 clusters come on that way alread.
I like it too, I wouldn’t mind doing something like that to my 2010 but my OCD wouldn’t let me since the lcds and the rest of the dash controls wouldn’t match! Would of like to see the inside of the stepper to figure why it was so crunchy!
I should have taken the stepper motor apart on camera. Next time!
No worries mate, curious minds inquire. Just love your videos, would of love to have a setup like this when I used to work at the dealer. Worked 7 years for a GM Truck Center, I changed and reprogrammed countless numbers of clusters.
@@MaxPower_Designs and I bet the dealerships are still seeing these older clusters!
Hey Jeff
Have a 07 Chevy Tahoe, my cluster needs repairing how do I connect with you and get mine repaired by you
czcams.com/video/T_2WnJMsZaU/video.html
I don’t like the little needles going all the way across. Do you have a supplier for the steppers in these and have much call for them?
Since a stepper motor failure in the 07+ is very rare, I use donor parts for a instance like this.
Looking to upgrade to led light on 2002 trailblazer
What part number do you use
For that older style just flat top or square 5mm.
Jeff Can you add a trans temp motor to a 01 Tahoe cluster?
For 99-02 if you want to add trans temp you need to replace the cluster.
Would you ever do a parts comparison between a GM and Toyota cluster? To see if they use different quality parts
I don't get in too many Toyota clusters, but if I remember correctly I believe some of the truck clusters are from the same design as ford.
jeffescortlx It would be a fun video on the type of capacitors each company uses
I am wanting to swap leds on my 2013 GMC 2500HD. What type of LEDs are you using here, would they be the same for my truck or are they different. I've seen that will need the smd 3528 with 4 contacts or do they need the 2 contacts like yours in the video?
All 07-14 NBS use the same package size LED'S. If you can find the LEDs you want in a four pin, that will work great. Otherwise two pin work also.
@@jeffescortlx Would there be a difference in brightness between the two? Also, the 4 pins are in a common anode or cathode. Which would be the correct choice?
Hello, can you find out the source of electricity in the connection number for Tahoe 2007, I want to test the number before installing it, but I do not have the connection
Pin 1 and 5 is positive and 13 is ground.

@@almodraji your welcome ✌
Do you ever have to change the trip button switch. We have to change clusters alot just because we can't get the miles for a driving log at work. We mostly have GM trucks that range from 2005-2020. The 07 and newer styles seem to have the most problems. I was seeing if you would share the part number for it and I could try changing them. I have watched most of your videos on them and want to try. If it doesn't work I could send them to you.
I believe it's 6x6x3 mm tactile smd.
@@jeffescortlx thanks, I will try my hand at it. We will see how it goes. I have a rheostat on a Miller welder board I am going to try too. It is 1200 for the new board only 5 terminals.

Yes I've done a few of the Saturn Aura LED replacements.
if the displays sometimes comes on when cold (max 0 to +5 degree ℃ or 32 to 41℉) then fades out when the cabin heats up, what would be your guess on what part of the board that have gone bad?
Probably assuming you vehicle is the same make/model/year as the one in this video

@@FluffYSweD typical MOSFET issue.
Wheere can I find these exact needles I’ve been trying too look all over the internet lol
I'm pretty sure the customer for this job got them from US Speedo.
Great video Jeff. I'll bet that stepper motor was damaged by the owner attempting to install one of those aftermarket pointers. Those aftermarket pointers can fit insanely tight and you really have to be careful installing and removing those. And if you're not aware of that before you put them on, it can be a recipe for disaster.
Yes typically the 03-06 after market needles fit too tight, but these slid on nicely. Felt better than the average 3rd party. Maybe he didn't twist off the original needle and tried to pull straight up without breaking it free first?
@@jeffescortlx On a side note, where did you get your white rectangular T-15 tip tray? I've been using a few of the Hakko B2756 circular tray's. Would be nice to consolidate all of my tips into one tray.
@@mike7958 she's custom! I have a buddy with a home machine shop. I bought him one of these OLED T12 stations and he made that for me.
@@jeffescortlx Gotcha. That's a pretty slick tip tray. I'm surprised Hakko doesn't make a T-15 tip tray that holds more tips.
What would be really cool is a custom T-15 tip tray similar to yours that is designed to mount on a pegboard angled at about 45°. I'd pay to have that made.
If that's my parents old TV I'm gonna lol.
I have a 2004 that I am looking for some Blue LED bulbs for. Do you have a part number? Or could I buy directly from you?
Sorry I don't get into selling individual parts like LEDs. I recommend a 5 mm with built in dropper resistor. Flat top not dome. Diffused instead of clear if you can find that option.
Jeff as always great work, Jeff I have a 2003 Chev. Tahoe and the RPM Gauge is screwy could you help me out on what piece that would be, or am I overstepping for your knowledge if I am I don't mean to and apologies. Thank You Luigi D.L
03 GM cluster, you'll want to have a full rebuild done on that one. Replace all the original stepper motors, lamps and by now you'll have a dozen fractured solder joints. Intermittent power is right around the corner and I bet your gear select display is dim.

Can you please provide price and shipping details ?
Can you repair Chrysler clusters? Say from a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500? My cluster went out one day while I was driving down the road. All the gauges just froze in place while driving down the highway. I got home and with key off the cluster was still illuminated, so I had to disconnect my battery. Now I have no cluster, wipers, horn, turn signals, brake lights, dome light, and headlight switch does nothing. The headlights and taillights now automatically come on with key in RUN position. I've learned through research on these 3rd Gen Dodge trucks that all the other functions I mentioned run through the cluster circuit. I yanked the cluster and checked every pin at the cluster's connectors. All my powers and grounds are good, no fuses blown or anything. So I'm calling the cluster. Does this sound familiar to you at all? Also I took my cluster apart and inspected the circuit board, visually I saw nothing wrong. I reassembled the cluster and it's now just sitting in my garage. I did not attempt to fix the cluster. Sorry to make this lengthy, but do you only repair GM clusters? I wanna send mine in somewhere, but I don't know who to go to. Thanks in advance! =]
With a problem like yours yours you'll want to send it into somebody that is more experience with Dodge. If you removed the needles it'll require calibration on reassembly.
@@jeffescortlx Okay for sure! Thanks for the reply! Love your work! =]

You don't necessarily need to buy a different one. You can just send the one in the vehicle.
Already subscribed but I threw a like in!
What’s the part number on white LEDs
I assume that cluster would have popped the fuse at some point. Knowing people it popped the first, replaced it, popped it, then they tried a larger one. LOL
Please no your giving nightmares. I also work in industrial controls and those people should know better. But nope, if a fuse pops instead of trouble shooting, they just stick in the biggest fuse they can find, and then send in boards for repair that were shooting flames.

Ooow that's a great colour for night driving :-D.
The 850ma could have been the leds being driven slightly harder, i don't suppose you looked at the current at the end maybe.
I've repaired burnt pcb heatsinking by cementing a square of undeveloped single sided pcb over the burnt section and solder the regulator/mosfet/other to that.
It's not pretty but it works :-D
Your list of favorite tools needs the cat adding, i know it's your technical advisor :)
I could unsub then resub... no no that's silly, but sillyness is my middle name :-D.
The junk yard cluster had almost 300k miles, while the board in for repair had half that at 150k miles, I wonder if a tired VFD display could be why it was drawing 50mA less on the higher mileage one.?
it's a good possibility or the vfd heater supply was a bit low so emission was lower so less bright.
I don't know how high a voltage is needed for the anode of the vfd, if it's above 12v then a step up regulator is on that board somewhere, and that could be having a bad hair day :-D.
I'm sorry i dont know much about vfd displays :-(
