Welcome back to SwitchUp! I do enjoy me a tactical RPG - are you a fan of the Mercenaries series? Mark
I enjoyed the Mercenaries Saga on the 3DS. I do like this tactical RPG, but Fire Emblem and Pokemon are the best TRPG series I enjoy.
I found the series while looking for games similar to Tactics Ogre(which I played on the GBA). Haven't finish the first game but its on my bucket list for vacations.
Thanks mark keep it up
I'm a fan, they are getting slightly better each time.
PSA: Only fuse items, if it's the accessory. Don't fuse weapon and armor until the shop no longer updates (it's usually one 1-3 battles before the final battle). It's because the accessories will stay with you for the entire game, while you'll be changing armor and weapons frequently. The reason for this is because fusing items is EXPENSIVE and even more so if the buff is good.
I have been looking at these for a while now. I want to give them a try. Thank you always providing such invaluable content.
Woot - I was hoping you would cover this.
Glad to see that the series is improving itself slowly but surely. I just love the classic look and feel of the Tactics Orge and FFT series, so this all seems up my alley. As you noted, a bit more story-pushing would be nice. It's been awhile since we had a tactics orge/FFT level of OMG...
Man the 90s were something....
Also - Breath of Fire.... Yes please!!!
Thanks for the top review ! Recently gotten into these after I reacquired the tactics itch.
I wish Square-Enix would just remaster FF Tactics for the Switch. That was the best.
Also, did anyone play Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume? That game was excellent and didn't get the attention it deserved.
Good review guy's been looking for a new trpg to play and you have found it for me
You have no idea how badly I want Breath of Fire III on the Switch >.
Thanks! Great review!
Great review! I never tried this series, but it seems to be something I would enjoy. For now, it'll stay at my wishlist. As soon as I go through part of my backlog, I'll grab it. Or when a sales comes 😂
I have god wars, disgaea, fire emblem, wargroove, the amazing langrisser, looking to buy the lrg physical dark crystal and tempted to get mercenary wings. i cant believe what tactics games the switch has recieved, i hope someday we get a vandal hearts, tactics ogre and ffantasy tactics. You guys are easily my most trusted reviewers, thank you.
One of my fave series on switch. The completionist in me means I will buy this.
I agree, this is one of my favorite series on Switch too..I will most likely buy this game as I have and still do enjoy the other titles
Best multiplayergames: Mario Kart 8, Warface, Crash Drive 2, NFS Hot Pursuit, Grid Autosport
I feel the same about this series
what else is inside of you?
@@rudymotta5430 my lesbian lovers obvs.
Will be buying this. I've completed the trilogy couple months ago.
I haven't played any Mercenaries Saga games (I'm saving up for the physical Chronicles copy) but this looks like something I'd enjoy immensely. Need to chip away at my backlog first though aghhhhhh
I enjoyed the other ones so ill probly get this one down the road...gotta get my final fantasy tactics fix 😄 nice review! Cheers
I simply adore the Mecenaries series. So kawaii.
A rare day one buy from me.
Now the Switch needs some Luminous Arc love.
Very good tactics games on the switch with mild blend of story and gameplay. Good for small dosages, not a series to play each game back to back though. Disgaea is the kong of tactics games to me on the switch, but this is a fun play while waiting on Disgaea 6.
Would you recommend this over the Saga Chronicles and False Phoenix?
I purchased this game today,.....I have to say that rideon continues to improve their games, I’m totally loving it so far. I’m hoping that the next game they would introduce created characters!
The story reminds me a bit of Valkyria Chronicles. And that's a good thing!
Grinding is what makes you a true gamer. It's a shame, people are ruining games just because they wanna play but don't wanna grind. 😞
What’s the title of the closing song? So chill.
I just got the game. IS there a manual or instruction anywhere? I have no clue what some of the stats mean... how do u find this out?
is it possible to speed up the battles?
2x speed mode maybe?
I was debating on wether to buy this game or fire emblem’s dlc, i think i’ll go with the latter. Thanks guys, great review!
Looks like a solid little strategy game for those who can’t get enough of the genre. May have to keep an eye on this one. Great succinct review as always! 👌🏽
This looks like my kind of game for sure! I've played final fantasy tactics back in the day and fe3h recently and am obsessed with this combat style. Any other suggestions?
Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark
Fire Emblem 3 houses definitely as far as gameplay is concerned. FE 3H is better even in the tactical gameplay department.
Brigandine legend of runersia (this one is great), XCOM, into the breach, langrissen, tiny troopers, wargroove and, it's not exactly the same, but valkyria Chronicles is pretty good if you like strategy games. Recently, I've been playing the new John Wick game on Switch and it's pretty enjoyable too
Thank you to all of you i screenshotted all of your answers and will be looking them up and putting on the wishlist!
@@coleparks2466 i 2nd langrisser its superb
Just found out today it was also release on Steam and wanted to see whats the game about and how it looks and feels cuz just had a crash land with Dark Deity thx a bunch for the vod.
level editor is included ?
I’ve been sitting on the fence on this series. Thanks for reviewing
You’re welcome mate! Mark
This got added to PlayStation recently and just caught my attention. Im thinking of playing this possibly to hold me over for Triangle Strategy... Or I might just wait for PTS to come out haha.
I'd love a breath of fire 3 and 4 bundle 😍😍
Do enemies move in all at once or do they hold back until you're close before they move towards you? That was an issue for me in the first title of the series. It was just a bit too easy
Judging from DigitallyDownloaded’s gameplay and commentary, it seems some(?) enemies hang back until you draw too close.
@@SmileyTrilobite Thanks
Big fan of this style of art work tho.
Thanks for the review Mark! Not my cup of tea, so I get to save some cash. Cheers
I like the Mercenaries series. Randomly got the first 3 pack and sure it was a simple story but i enhoy the gameplay and aesthetic. I meed to get 4 (Wings) and 5 (Blaze)
I like to add another category to add to the review!
Wallet Strain
(?/20)
This number varies by the person number of backlog and how much money available to that person.
For me
(20/20)
I'm so broke for the year.
(;-;)
Lol I like it! Mark
Aren't we all broke 💔
Best multiplayergames: Mario Kart 8, Warface, Crash Drive 2, NFS Hot Pursuit, Grid Autosport
I played Mercenaries Saga 2 & 3 on the 3DS. Really liked them. Fun trpgs that I played on my commute to and from work. The Switch titles feel a little expensive to me. This type of series where every entry is "more of the same" as Mark said is best at a cheaper price. I can be more forgiving if I pay under $10. I think 2 & 3 were under $5 on the 3DS.
I enjoy have been enjoying all of the Mercinaries games recently and while none are stand out games as far as gripping stories go the developer Rideon does seem to be making overall improvements with each entry. This one even though nothing amazing actually improves greatly in terms of overall presentation and visuals over the last entry which was only a slight improvement over the 3DS games. However, they still do look very generic overall and the battle system while functional hasn't really changed much since the first game to add much variety. They are like comfort food for anyone who likes strategy JRPGs though just might not leave you feeling content when you finish.
I played FF Tactics when I was a child and I loved it. But after that, nothing gives same fun (I played some different Games similar to that). I also didn't feel the urge of buying this Game while I was watching. (Am I getting old 😅) But thanks for the video 👍
Reminds me of Jeanne D'Arc on PSP also
I love Tactics ogre let us cling together, and I hope this mercenaries like that game.
hello. on lvl up stats gained are fixed or randomized like in Fire Emblem games?
I've never plaid a tactics style game in my life, would this be a good place to start?
I'm trying to play game types O usually don't lately. I usually didn't like JRPGs before, almost finished Dragon Quest XI S now and it's completely changed my mind :) Maybe I'll be surprised again :)
I would recommend Into the Breach
I purchase this game today. I can say I have all the mercenaries games. Love the series reminds me of Final Fantasy tactics.
Yep definitely similar! Mark
I loved this series back on the 3ds. Shame the job system doesn't have as much dept as other Tatics games and I think the price os a bit high.
As for the graphics, its kind of their signature. Although these seem a bit more polished they all looks pretty much the same
Agree . I still want Breath of Fire 3 haha. Ever play that?
@@SwitchUpYt Nah. A friend of mine had Breath of Fire IV for the PS1 but we played very little of it. We were more into fighting games back then specially Tekken 3
I still play FFTA on my GBA and got the first three of these games hoping they could fill that niche on my Switch. Sadly I found them entirely too grindy, but it sounds like they've improved the pacing for these. Will keep an eye out for a sale! Thanks for the look Mark!
Will try the first games to see if this can fill up the space left from Vandal Hearts!!!
Loved Vandal Hearts!
how similar is this to tactics ogre (my fav)?. Can you recruit party members and beasts? is there any crafting? are there classes progression? vartans(or flying characters/class)?
Check out Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark. It's a lot closer to FF Tactics and Tactics Ogre. And and a DLC adds 3 new jobs and the ability to recruit monsters too. And yes, it has crafting for items/upgrades as well.
Fell seal 😆 are u serious.....tactic ogre or fft fans don't wanna play with basketball player height 🥴 we like our characters small and blocky maps
Doesn't 16/20 sound a bit high for "decent"?
In Essex decent means a bit above good and which to me means 8/10 in that context. It was decent! (In an 8/10 way lol) Mark
Remember these games on the psp. Awesome and time less
PSP was the handheld for every SRPG fan. Miss those days
Now if you actually want to play a game that does this kind of story justice, play Tactics Ogre: Let us cling together.
I have the remastered preorded for the Nintendo Switch. I'm really looking forward to its release I own the original copy on PSP still as well.
If Breath of Fire 3 or Front Mission 3 came out on Switch, I would probably never play anything else. I am never happier with my Nintendo Switch than when I am playing ps1 rpgs in handheld mode
Yeah I loved that game so much! Which emulator you using? Mark
@@SwitchUpYt I have it on ps3, I just kept it for the effect series, front mission and the first suikodens. I'd love to see any suikoden game on switch but I'm not going to get my hopes up
@@SwitchUpYt but I LOVE playing Grandia on my switch as opposed to on my ps3
@@TYFP19 I prefer playing that stuff on the computer with a decent emulator and some xBR scaling or crt shaders. I got a secondary mini PC (ASRock A300 with a 2400G) hooked up to the TV for this as well. Much better experience than some low spec console tablet. For mobile I just use my smartphone with RetroArch and an 8Bitdo controller. The switch was bought for the missus (Let's Sing) 😂
Reminds me a lot of FFT... Which is a good thing.
Final fantasy tactics advanced is my favorite FF game so I'm hoping I like this game xD it looks pretty good, just don't know if I wanna buy it.
I just ordered the physical on lrg
Speaking of Tactics Ogre...how about a (remastered) compilation?
It would actually be a dream come true
Love that game but hard af!!!!!
Oh who else?! At 0:07 it looked like a bunch of dead Squirtles. 🤣
Oh the horror!
Not my cup of tea but still a great review for those that enjoy the series and this type of TAC RPG.
Hi I played ffta and ffta2 grimoire of the rift a lot and really enjoyed it. Can someone tell me which other tactic game is most equal to them? Thanks in advance :)
@To Release is To Resolve thank you a lot I really enjoy it !
So which of the twin dragons was born first?
Can we expect a review of the latest game in the Mercenaries series Mark?
This is really my type of game, but sadly I can't afford for it rn lol
Am I the only one hoping to hear how much the price of the collection is? 🤣 Gonna check it out and maybe just have them all
this looks so great, reminds me of final fantasy tactics .
Woah good eye ya got there
wish this would release on steam :(
I love srpgs, but there is something really missing in the mercenaries series. It resembles the gameplay mechanics of beloved games of the past, but it feels empty, lacks soul. I just wish we would get something as epic as a tactics ogre where gameplay, story and mechanics were the highlight of the game.
Limited Run physical edition incoming.
Depth is a deal breaker for me in srpgs. God Wars actually nailed this aspect with their skill system.
How so
Looks like a cozy rpg title to time waste, will keep an eye on this one
I wish we could have Breath of Fire III too :(
Laughs in PSP from over 10 years ago
I'm a sucker for sprite based games which is why this inherently appeals to me more than xcom or civilization, is that strange?
it is on 20% discount rn on steam lol
This or Fire Emblem engage?
I have to (respectfully) disagree on some part.
I feel the visuals are really nice and what was a big draw card for me. However, I see the gameplay is a little simple and may wait for a sale, especially with the backlog I've got I can wait
I wish it was multiplayer.
This is a hit or miss for most fans of TRPG. I like it but not that much. I might pick it up if I have nothing else to play.
Any game inspired by Tactics Ogre gets bought by me.
Everyone always mentions FF Tactics. Whenever I see games like these I always think of Fire Emblem which originated before FF Tactics.
very2 good
1, 2 and 3 kinda drained me. Not sure i want to try this one.
Same. if you've played one. you've played all of them.
Interesting all of the footage is in the first hour or two of the game. I’m curious how much you actually played before writing the review
Capturing footage and writing the review are completely different things. We would capture a couple of hours worth and then play the rest away from the camera to write the review. Avoids later game spoilers.
Oof tactical rpgs there seem to be a lot these days, not that it was a bad thing, just not my favorite, thanks for the vid tho
Everything is pretty much the same as the other series (except for the graphics which has a bit more improvement) so I don't see any reason purchasing it 'again' unless it is on sale. Lol
You sneaky bastards you know how to split videos but you only split the ones that we'll see as a whole anyway, gotcha.
I find these to get old fast
648th
I play games like this to escape things like political arguments, not cosplay with them. Did they sell this in Japan??
4:55 fighting illegal immigrants lol
Based illegal hunters the game
Racist ff tactics lmao
Let’s hope not haha! Mark
Weird xenophobia plot that doesnt address things well. Avoid.
To be honest I am not looking for a good story in these games. The gameplay is all I need.
I will judge by myself
Maybe a different protagonist leader other than the dry same old vanilla blonde haired white guy thats in every game
Sounds like another SJW game. Hard pass
Poor snowflake.
