That zoom is rough. Really wish they could make the field fill the screen and use dynamic zooms when needed, but otherwise its great how this turned out.
It's CIRCLE. I would play it for that alone. I actually have a folder on my 3DS dedicated to all the CIRCLE games in my collection. Drancia Saga. Witch and Hero. Fairune (this in particular I recommend). They are a phenomenal game developer. And they tackle a lot of different game genres. (They have a Mega Man clone, The Legend of Dark Witch. And it's just as challenging to beat.) I'm a little shocked to hear the music for Mercenaries Saga Chronicles is sub-par, as music is usually one of the highlights (for me) of any CIRCLE Ent. title. (Fairune has such a Final Fantasy Adventure sound, you'd be tempted to think it's a sequel or spin-off of the FFA/Secret of Mana series.)
I'll admit the CIRCLE games are never big on story. Usually, you're a character dumped in the middle of nowhere (a la Legend of Zelda) with little more than a sword and a 3-second tutorial telling you "B is slash," "A is jump." And the adventure begins. Sometimes you get a bit more detail along the way, sometimes you don't. The minimalism is kinda the developer's charm. And the games are usually quick to beat, so you're rarely more than a five or ten hour investment to finishing 100%.
Haven't played Mercenaries Saga Chronicles, but again, it's a CIRCLE game, so my interest is piqued. Thanks for the review, Smash. This is definitely one to check out. :D
Have a shot every time you hear final fantasy tactics!
Don't listen to this guy you'll be dead in under a minute!
Lmao 🍻
I was about to write the same comment ~( ‾▿‾ )~
In Pokemon red means up and blue means down. It might be a Japanese thing, it screws with me a lil sometimes but I've seen it a few times.
The camera is like in the Fantasy Tactics Advance and Fantasy Tactics Advance A2. I think you are comparing with the first playstation version, in which the maps were 3D, but in the Advance and DS version are 2D versions like this game. What I want to know is, ¿you can switch between classes and retain skills from them like in the FFA and FFA2?
Awesome review SmashJT. Glad you enjoyed these games as well. I will have to update and pick up the Saga version for Switch.
This is only $15? I'm gonna get this!
Anyone know how much job system there is? Any unlocking jobs? Ability to edit party composition by job? Looks kinda "This is Jim the warrior, deal with it" from here?
Love tactical rpgs. Shinning force series is my favorite. This is a must own. Hoping for a physical copy
Limited run games will have an open pre-order late October 2019
Great review! The red indicating more powerful items / weapons and the blue highlighting less impressive stats is crazy. Glad you pointed that out.
Yeah! For a while I was looking at the screen like what the heck is wrong with me why can't this make sense to my brain lol... I finally figured it out and duh.. the colors are inverted. I wonder if they'll update that (though maybe that would confuse the players who got used to it being backwards?) lol... Who knows. Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it!
i didnt notice about the color until you mentioned it. I took it as Red for Hot, and Blue for Cold. It wasnt a problem to me at all.
Great review Jeff! That red and blue switch around is really weird.
Not a game for me, but I'm intrigued by the gameplay. $15 bucks is a pretty good deal.
Great review of a pretty sweet looking game. $15? Sold!!
Thanks so much for this review, this was great!👌🏻
“Final Fantasy Tactics” count: 15 (including one “FFT”), or almost 3 times per minute. What’s the name of THIS game again...? 🤔😂
Thanks for a good review. Never seen you before, but it seems we are on the same page, when it comes to these types of games
Been looking for a game to scratch my Ogre Battle / Tactics genre itch for a while. This might just do until then (hopefully they port it over to the Switch/SNES online)
I'll have to keep my eye out for this one when I eventually get a switch. It will probably be the only way I'll be able to play it since the only mobile device I own is my company phone and I can't use it for gaming.
This is a great review, excellent video, thank you!
Awesome review Jeff!
Great video man, found this channel just now, got yourself a new fan!
Thanks so much!
Spotted this for the first time on deals and you sold me. Thank you.
I don't mean to be a smart-ass, but the game seems to be a lot more inspired by Tactics Ogre than FFT. Still, good review ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ
lol smart ass
Thank you. I was thinking the same thing this entire video
Super late, but would kill for a Smash JT shirt. Smash Tv was one of my favorite arcade and snes games ever!
Haha awesome! Here's my store if you're interested. Thanks!

Thanks for the review!
Great video!
So i've never played FFT nor have I really played fire emblem. But I HAVE played Disgaea 5 on the switch and I really enjoy it (although it has maybe a little too much going on for a new tactics RPG player like me). Do you think I should pick it up? For $15 it seems like a steal but at the same time 3 games is a lot to invest in time-wise.
Wayward Swagabond thanks! It's less complicated than Disgaea IMHO, and if you enjoyed that there's a solid chance you'd like this one. I can't recommend it enough for $15. Tremendous value at this price point. If you do dive in - let me know if you enjoy it!
Would have been great had they not made the HP bars overlap the units. It's bothersome...
*final fantasy tactics*
You mean Tactics Ogre which was the inspiration for FFT.
When it comes to Tactical/Strategy RPG, FFTactics always seems to be the baseline of comparison. Whilst I really like the game, I think Tactics Ogre LUCT is far superior. I would buy the game in a heartbeat if they ported it to switch. These review videos should give more credit to TO in this genre.
I completely agree, I played FFT first and liked it but then played TO and fell in love with that game. I bought a Vita last year just to play TO again lol
Tactics Ogre is the pinnacle of the genre imo. Let Us Cling is amazing.
Thank you! Nothing Compares to Tactic Ogre LUCT. I wish Square Enix would make new Tactic ogre game. 🙏🙏.
I need to try Tactics Ogre now! Ive bought them in the past but then never played them.
I loved FFT, but it always had me bounce off that I never really understood the leveling system, and id get stuck on some battle towards the end I couldn't beat (usually after the twins joined you and i wanted to level them up). Id have a guy i wanted to level job points as a Chemist or something, id have him throwing potions all day long, and some archer who i purposely didn't use just walking around the map. After the battle, the archer would get job points and the chemist none. I was always so confused! (People tell me "just use their jobs", but Ive put 100's of hours in and that never seemed to be the case!).
And just character levels, I liked the GBA version of FFT because you could stop, hop in a random battle level your team up, and when i got to a story mission i felt like "hero over-leveled", i loved it.
But in FFT regular Id get some low level character to join me, Id go fight some Chocobos or throw away random battle to level them up, and the little mobs would level to my highest character and they'd wipe the damn floor with me. i had some random mob battles that were tougher then the boss battles!... So I could never figure out how to get the random battles to be useful to help me level up and earn job points... (Maybe I was always just bad at it, but it seemed unfun - i wanted to max out my characters, and have all the abilities exactly how i wanted for my beginning generic characters - but it never seemed i could do that in the second half of the game... but i could in the GBA version that other people said "was too easy", oh well!).
yet another game reviewer that thinks we'd rather look at their face instead of the actual game they're reviewing.
And he's jittery too like Samantha Bee. "omg I'm on camera I need to pee"
Lol 3:02 red is bad, blue is good, I'll take the opposite. On sale, will try
Ever since the fifth Pokémon generation, red means the statistic that a nature improves and blue the one that gets lowered by the nature of the Pokémon.
In Playstation, the Japanese version, red circle (まる) means accept and the blue X (ばつ) is cancel or deny.
It seems to be a Japan thing.
I'm a huge fan of FFT and i've been disappointed by Tactics JRPGs in the past. But I think you might have sold me on this title. Really it would be awesome if they would just release FFT on the switch.
How long is it? I heard the new merc Wings game is about 20 hours in campaign. But idk if that includes the combat. Bcuz each combat mission always took me 10-30 minutes when I played a demo.
But the Chronicles has the first three games. How long is it total?
But is there a physical version? If not i'm sorry but i'm won't pick it up :(
I can't say I blame you... I think this is a prime option to be made a limited run or something like that, but in all honesty for what you get I'm not mad at the $15 price point, esp when you consider a physical version would (I would bet) be around $30
I agree the prices are good on most of these physical games, as a collector I refuse to buy digital games I like physical only. I'm sure you are the same way.
I agree!
BTW i think from what i see, that they took _Inspiration_ from Tactics Ogre, not Final Fantasy Tactics. In Tactics Ogre(a Snes game) you could not "turn the camera around" due of it being not a 3d game. It also had the Throwing of Stones and allot of the other stuff i see here.
That plus they did take tropes from other old games like Shining Force, Langrisser and Fire Emblem.
BTW ... No, Final Fantasy Tactics is a good game, but there are allot other games that are on level with it.
Bought it yesterday. No sleep for me.
Only the Playstation Final Fantasy Tactics could rotate. The GBA and DS one couldn't, and this looks like it's more in line with that, given the map tiles are 2d and not polygons.
I just Bought this game I’m have fun with this game
I’m picking this game up for $15 good deal my type of game
Never heard fo this series! I don't know if it'd be for me though just because I could never get into tactics, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, etc. Although weirdly enough I really, really enjoyed Mario/Rabbids Kingdom Battle. *Shrug* I DO like the presentation here though and it's nice that you have some camera control. LoL yeah, the red and blue would've thrown me off too. Awesome work, as always!
No there is NO camera control... that's the biggest problem. Outside of that it's awesome! :-)
OH! Derp, I totally heard that wrong and thought you said the games you were REFERENCING didn't but this one DID. My mistake! But glad it's still worth playing despite the setback :)
Haha no worries! Thanks for swinging by man. Yeah I'd highly recommend this title if you like any other tactics games. Not as good as them but pretty darn close.
I’ve really been enjoying the game😊
Did you ever played Tactics Ogre ? Because this is more similar to Tactics Ogre, I don't get it why do you keep talking about FFT.
About the perspective : that's the same as FFTA. You can't change the perspective BUT all maps are made so that you won't be bothered by some mountains or whatever blocking your view.
Last thing: it seems that all footages are taken from the same game. I didn't see any images from Mercernaries Saga 2 for example. Why is that? Did you play all three games or only one?
Your review is great BTW ;)
No I haven't gotten around to Tactics Ogre but really want to! Even though it wasn't required, I really would have enjoyed the ability to change the perspective. It would have felt far more immersive for me.
I can understand that, but I think camera rotation fit better with 3D graphics (like FFT), whereas this one has only 2D graphics (like Tactics Ogre and FFTA), so camera rotation is technically more difficult to accomplish. Tactics Ogre is a great game BTW, the remake on PSP is a masterpiece!
dandyboh thanks for the feedback and yeah I absolutely need to load that up on my PSP!
i got this a bunch of days ago and its an ok game but its a bit lacking to me, if you are not doing the story it feels like just grinding and repetitive. in the fft you could go do other things to get items and train in different encounters, this is just repeat again and again and again the same stuff.i havent played the second or third yet but coming from a phone game im not sure they are gonna change much
The game is now 8 bucks on sale
"red is bad, blue is good" ?
i take it you haven't played any recent pokemon games. for a while now, the pokemon's natural strength and weakness (determined by that specific pokemon's nature (personality, i guess)) follows the same pattern as this game.
blue is a decrease, pink is an increase.
I think I'll pass on this one. I was never really into Final Fantasy Tactics all that much. I tend to enjoy the Fire Emblem approach to tactical combat a little more. Great review though.
Yeah it's for sure not for everyone
If it helps I had to play FFT multiple times before I fell in love with the mechanics and story
That's true. It was years ago after all and I've only just recently enjoyed games like Jeanne D'arc and Fire Emblem. Maybe I should give FFT a try again. Who knows? My tastes may have changed lol.
StarlinkNova haha for sure. I appreciated FFT far more when I was old enough to comprehend everything that was going on. The first attempt I was too young and too much confusion
Finnel Fancy taxis lol
No release for the PS4 makes me sad.
how about.. NOT comparing it to final fantasy tactics? not everyone here played that game.
the only things i got were: fixed camera angles, color scheme and generic story.
what about the actual gameplay? are map designs good? are there interesting mechanics? is class variety diverse? is it a grindy game? is the pacing too slow or too easy? and a lot more things. looks like a quickly put together video for the sake of getting it out than actually helping players who might want to go into these games.
I know it as red is up and blue is down. Pokemon is like that for an example. Red is fire hot is good and blue your being a downer?
Dat review tho
red up / blue down? MADNESSS!!!!
I like your channel
Thanks!
Wtf, how'd I miss this video?! Oh well, here now. I'm about to speak a sacrilegious phrase: I never liked final fantasy-like games. The turn base gameplay just gets to me; although I used to love a game called Dark Wizard as a kid.
i'm a few hours into the first one and i gotta say, the characters are really dull, the whole game is very generic (as he said). nothing really stands out. no character is interesting even to look at let alone their personality. strangely though, i keep playing it. its really just the combat system grind that keeps me coming back. its very similar to FFT and Square doesn't seem to have any interest in giving us a new one, or even porting the old one (or Tactics Ogre which was phenomenal) to the Switch.
All I hear is final fantasy tactics
Final fantasy tactics, the budget version of Ogre Tactics
bought and paid for review. So sick of youtube shills.
FIN'LFANNASYTACTICS
Is it my imagination or did I click a review for Mercenaries Saga? Because apparently he seems to be reviewing Final Fantasy Tactics which I don’t have access to and haven’t played
To Smash JT
I personally disagree with the general rating you gave the game, but that's from someone who came expecting something a bit more like fire emblem. It seems like, to me at least, a good value, but weak content.
It seemed like the game play was repetitive and not especially distinct from *itself* as there seems to be very little variety in the objectives, as its usually just kill all enemies or the commander and, to be honest, the classes are all kind of samey, as just having enemies that deal death in slightly different ways just isn't interesting enough to warrant different classes. Oh, and annoyingly all the classes in the game just move way to fuckin slooooooooooow. There should have been SOME way to actually move a reasonable more quickly, though this is a contextual nitpick because the maps are just too big for the low mobility.
Though the lack of context of playing FF tactics makes it difficult to draw the same conclusions that you have. I mean no offence but you kind of skimmed over the gameplay elements in the game, as in, you kinda just said, this is like tactics, to describe it, so i think that MAYBE nostalgia may have affected your score here...
I personally got pretty bored of mercenaries saga however, I respect that you like it and, just to be clear, this is a critique of the game, not you.
Oh and its like a 6.5 for me
If you like FE and haven't played FFT, I'd strongly recommend giving that a shot. Thanks for explaining your feelings thoroughly here. I guess my point of the review was off base a tad. I wanted to express how FFT is an incredible game and those who were looking for more of the same (albeit not as good), this game is a good direction and value. If for those who haven't played FFT yet, to go play it. It's too good to avoid :-)
Ok I guess I'll play FFT If i get the chance, especially if it makes me like this game more. i also remembered to add my personal score to the OG post.
Ten seconds in, can't cope with the fake over-enthusiasm.
I played until I said... You know? This is kinda boring and the story fails to hold you. Repetitive, generic, suffers from the same faults of FFT. Once you have a strategy it’s rinse repeat.
You do get to play a near endless amount of FFT style tactics.
Shouldn't this video title be "Final fantasy tactics review" instead of mercenaries, cause all i hear is final fantasy tactics
Shouldn't you be in baby daycare right now? Cause all I hear is Wah Wah Wahhh
I'm going to go out on a limb and say you didn't play all three games in your week before making this review, but still decided to judge their story/gameplay as being "not as fleshed out as FFT." Nice blanket statement.
I understand what you mean when you talk about the "perspective" of this game, but it's isometric.
You can "swing the camera around" and "zoom in and out" in FFT because the maps are rendered in 3D. Have you played any 2D isometric game that allows camera shifting? It would be strange if one exists.
Very flawed review. What has youtube come to?
Game is very imbalanced
