The classic "reach second phase, suddenly can't do the first one anymore" that i always have with souls.
Yep same shit is happening with Rykard. I was able to get him to phase 2 and then now o can’t even get home close
OK so it isn't just me. I had the same problem with the last boss. I cheesed them easily in the first phase and got them down to half in second phase, then suddenly when I went back?, I got eviscerated in the first 10 seconds.

This boss is pretty poorly balanced. They need to fix her by adding a third phase where she deals bleed damage too.

I think the only plausible thing they could do (as in they might have thought about it) to make it worse would have been if you were fighting her while inflicted with scarlet rot indefinitely or something.
She should have the ability to summon as many revenants she wants.

Literally impeccable timing, I hear him say that while not looking and I already know she's about to Waterfowl. I even knew the specific point when he'd die.
In all honesty... The fact he killed her without ever getting a hang of dodging the waterfowl dance is actually impressive.
Tbh, when looking at that final attempt where he shredded her second phase in no time... that mimic tear made this fight much easier than what it would be without
he missed out half the fun lol. The best feeling when beating this boss is being able to dodge her waterfowl dance perfectly, it is exhilarating.
Seems like his strategy to beat her was generally to just run at her with 2 units, spamming attacks until he ultra highrolled RNG attack selection into a win.
Kinda like if you just sat down at the blackjack table with the strategy "I will never hit, I will just accept the cards I am dealt and hope either I am dealt good enough cards or the dealer busts".
Could just tank waterfowl dance with Perfumes and be done with it lol

It took me five days before I found a good strategy and execution.
It's kind of wild how long it took him to even consider waiting for an opening before jump attacking. Guess that must have worked on everything prior.
Nah, he's just insanely impatient. Every time he gets stuck on a boss, it's because he's just impatient, has basically no understanding of the concept of stamina management and relies heavily on running in and smacking the boss like a monke. He also just eats hits in favor of landing a hit so he gets killed by one shot moves a lot. Every time he dies, he gets more impatient and devolves even further into monke.
Jumping bonk and crouch poke are the best attacks for colossal swords
It's always the colossal weapon jump attackers that struggle the most
@@gladioumbra5930 the jump attack is the best for colossal weapons? i never really used it, i mainly just used basic R1 and the attack after dodge rolling as well as weapon arts to get by pretty easily. i used lions claw with cold on the great sword or starscourge greatsword.

Melina requires lots of patience. Her poise break tricks u into thinking u can be pretty aggro. Buts it’s just a ruse so she can hit u with her nutty combos.
Seeing Connor not use max upgraded weapons is also pretty painful.

That's my main problem, everytime i see the bleed proc and that juicy 5k dmg, i turn into an ape.
I love how after 50 fights he's still rolling the same way, taking hits on the same strikes, like he learned nothing at all and don't even trying to. Even at the end the kill is just pure brute force with mimic lol

The amount of times he died because he just decides to jump attack her over and over without actually thinking about what she’s doing is kind of amazing. He just straight up launches himself into the air directly towards her attacks, he doesn’t even attempt to wait until after a dodge to go for a punish, he just rag dolls himself towards her and hopes for the best. How many times does one have to die mid air for them to realize that dodging needs to take priority over attacking? Like he didn’t even try to learn her move set , ways to dodge them and their telegraphs. He just went full on offense brute force mode over and over again. You can’t just Unga Bunga through every boss fight if you’re not using cheese strats.

@@firstlast-zl6of You run back when she does it in front of you to avoid the first 3 strikes, roll into her for the next 2 and then roll to the right and then back to avoid the last strike + the lingering slashes after she finishes. This man has like a 10 second delay in his brain when she does this move and I really don't understand it.
I fought her too and yeah I understand his delay.
By the time he realizes that he has no stamina left so he cant do anything besides face tanking the combo and praying to the rng jesus that he somehow makes it through.

Connor only beat her because he had an insanely favourable second phase for some unknown reason. Basically she did the scarlet rot flower 3 times in a row allowing him to pummel her. She did no aerial combat or sword swing combos. He'd still be trying to beat her today if that didn't happen.
I've a theory that maybe they give you one easy try after maybe 100 tries.
Big mistake he does is trying to trade with her.
The inaccurate dodging isnt helping him either.

to be fair I see way too many people try arguing that she's somehow fair or fun but I think most can agree that at least Waterfowl Dance is complete horseshit. I think any playstyle should be acceptable, especially ion a game such as elden ring, having to change the way you play for 1 single boss is really frustrating

@@fel524 she is a well designed boss with very attacks literally designed to allow you to punish them waterfowl dance isn’t hard to escape once you understand how it works and fighting on the side of the arena in any souls game is a recipe for disaster if your complaint is that she is designed to fight differently from every other boss you would be correct she is designed around her controlling the pace of the fight and she doesn’t care if you want to trade with her because every trade is a loss she is not badly designed she is designed to challenge you in her play ground

@@HaohmaruHL waterfowl dance is telegraphed - but it's definitely not easy to dodge - even with quick/bloodhound step - the pattern is unintuitive and the windows so tight that even when you know how it works the mechanical execution makes it extremely difficult, which is somewhat unique in souls.
@@mazariamonti you just run from it. By the time she jumps int he air you shouldn't even be in your attack animations anymore because you should know better than spamming moves. Run, roll twice in her, run and repeat. Easy. Considering all the different builds and playstiles int he game you're not supposed to frame perfect dodge all that to begin with
@@HaohmaruHL i beat this boss with dual greatsword and after taking 75% of her health she will do the first waterfowl. After that its completely up to RNG if she does it or not, sure you can aproach her and see if she is gonna do it, but in my experience she would do it inmediatly after she takes a hit that staggers her. And you know that if she starts that attack in your face, you are pretty much death.
Honestly, the key to this fight is learning how to dodge waterfowl dance. Once I mastered it, the fight became way easier and was much more fun. That being said, I definitely wouldn't have figured out how to dodge that move without watching youtube videos.
I just used a great shield for the first part of wfd. Sure she heals a little bit while blocking but it was extremely consistent even in the 2nd phase. The move just needs a way to be able to consistently dodge it during the first part or have a longer windup to get clear from the move imo. Other than that great fight.
I had to watch ongbal do it before I caught on. Didn’t have bloodhound step yet, so distance was a problem.
I mean, the real secret is to spam the ever living beJesus out of frost and bleed and then the fight is easy, but you can also learn to dodge Waterfowl, I guess!
I always managed to dodge the first two barrages, but I wouldn’t have thought to dodge into the third one without watching a vid. Because it doesn’t work with the first two, but the third barrage behaves completely differently.

At some point you would think he would figure out to roll into the second and third part of water foul dance which makes her completely miss you.
Got killed by the first part often enough too though.
It doesn't, not unless you go with a fast roll equip load. Even then it's still tough as shit.

@@Xonarag Yah there is a way to dodge the first part of it to you gotta get directly under her run in a circle she will continuously change directions trying to stay aimed at you and as she comes down you need to roll in the opposite direction she will just barely miss you and then you can do the second and third part as I said by rolling into her. mind you dodging the first attack is way way more difficult then the second and third and requires really good timing but it is possible with enough practice to do it consistently the other option is to learn the tells and HP thresh holds she can do water foul dance at which is a lot easier.
@@meru8348 You are correct. I double checked, because I was confusing it for you talking about dodging the whole combo.
The reason Connor doesn't take advantage of that move is because he's too close for it: seemingly every time malenia whips out the waterfowl, Connor gets hit by the first wave. Probably because he's bad, but also because of the strength build. If he can't run away from the first slashes then there's pretty high odds of being caught by the second and third.
After 5 hours I thought he would know the move sets and not to trade with her since she can heal each hit. She doesn’t stagger easily too.
Fighting Malenia must be what it feels like to be a demon trying to fight Dante. Or more accurately trying to fight Vergil.

It's not that his weapon is slow or anything. He just always hits back when it's not his turn to attack. Malenia always have a down time, yet he wants to trade with her like it's PVP.

Would never want to fight her as a pure unga bunga strength build, the timing is too tight between hitting and recovering. I’ve soloed her twice using bleed katanas and magic and each time I was nowhere near the amount of attempts it took him to finally win.
I cheesed her with a blaphemus blade faith build to insta stagger her
If you used a summon like Tiche, she's manageable. Ruin's Greatsword + Mimic just obliterates her.
i beat it with one it took me like 70 tries , and i dont use summons. if you find the timinng for the waterfowl dance its becomes doable
Might be more manageable with the buffs to Colossal Weapons.
The game is like 30% more difficult for unga bunga strength builds. People say this is the easiest FS game but that's a fallacy. It depends on what build you use. Elden ring is like 3x bigger than previous FS games combined so you bet it's also way easier to cheese with mage builds and such. But the game, especially in late game is ridiculously difficult for ride or die players.

Me and my friends hated fighting this boss when we first got to her. Most of us even said that we weren't fighting her ever again. Two months into the game, the majority of us actually like fighting her and appreciate the challenge she puts us through.
Every souls boss in a nutshell. You at first hate the bosses and then you learn to appreciate them later on. Even feeling euphoric when finally defeating them.

In his defense, Malenia is one of the hardest matchups in the game for str builds, especially without any auxiliary effects like bleed or frost.

@@charliebaker1427 Back then, before str weapons got buffs, it was quite common for people to do the opposite, trading in their heavy weapons for shit like Moonveil or Rivers of Blood.
Personally, I got my first win against her with Highland axe and a greatshield and it was hard as fuck. Fought her again in NG+ with a dex/bleed build and it was like night and day how much easier it was.
There are few lighter strength weapons - Beastman's Cleaver, Beastman's Curved Swords, Nightrider Glaive, Banished Knight GS and etc. Doesn't necessarily needs to be a huge ass weapon. Plus cold affinity works well on pure str weapons.

- Uses the slowest weapons in the game against the fastest boss in the game.
- Has Radagon's Soreseal equipped against the highest damage boss in the game, the worst possible place to equip it.
- Refuses to switch to a faster weapon or change strategy, doubles down on even slower weapons, wonders why it's so hard to deal damage.
- Is repeatedly instantly murdered by one tap attacks that have to be dodged precisely with timing and spacing, does neither, refuses to learn dodge timings and positioning, screams repeatedly about how unfair it is and how nothing works.
- Strength Build + Button Masher, literally the worst possible combination and complains about buffered inputs.
... Yeah, you were due that pain XD Some people just gotta learn the hard way.
While I agree that the Soreseal is a very bad choice, hard hitting weapons are very good against her, especially with mimic. If you lure her into a corner where she can't dodge far, you and your clone can just stunlock her. Works even better with other players
@@arnejacoby7888 Slow hard weapons have nothing to do with it. Blunt damage is the key, and attacks need a minimum speed / cadence to keep her reliably stunned - Malenia has surprisingly excellent poise and hyper armor for her speed, on top of the passive healing.
I'm not saying you can't do it with a STR build or a quality build, and I'm not saying you can't do it with ultra class weapons. But you better accept the fact you will need to execute the fight flawlessly if you do it that way, which means you will probably die a lot just trying to figure out the basics of timing, positioning and not getting greedy. You just can't trade damage with her. Which the whole point of using ultra weapons is trading damage. Hell, the video itself shows how bad a decision it is to try and learn the fight this way - how many times did he die rushing in for a swing when Malenia had yet to finish her combo or had an extension option ready for a punish?

@@Fyrestar Erm... Yeah actually. I agree. Malenia is bulls**t on toast. She needs a bit of adjustment I feel with regards to her poise, hyper armor and posture. Either that or Ultras need a big buff (which they admittedly got in 1.04, but I've got no idea how that leans into this boss fight, let alone the overall meta). Either way, as is, she's aggressive and fun to fight but WAY overtuned.

If the boss is being hard cause of your build then you simply have to adapt and learn the attacks and the openings. its not pigheaded, its simply just how a souls game is. I know this must suck to hear and trust me it is to me sometimes but.. you just have to get good.

Just like it’s “possible” to role play as a turtle and use a heavy shield against her and let her heal off of you so the fight takes forever and still technically win

Everyone has 'that one boss' but when it also happens to be an agreed upon hardest boss, that's going to be a lot of pain.
Malenia was certainly hard but luckily I had nowhere near the trouble Connor did here.
I do give him some credit for trying it so long without mimic, and for sticking with the same weapon. I feel like the overwhelming majority of people beat her with a bleed build and either mimic or co-op. I beat her way faster than he did but I used dual katanas.

This was painful to watch. So much greed, blind swinging, attempting to go in in the middle of her combos, getting hit by some of the easiest dodgeable attacks like her lunge. JFC.
The funniest thing about this fight is that you start to memorize her pattern pretty early on just to still get your ass handed to you another 150 times and you’re like lol but wait…

In my experience, this is one of those fights that you despise while you are doing it, but look back fondly. I was miserable fighting her, but watching it back I absolutely love it.
I'd still fight her over crucible knights. If you aren't using a parrying shield, you are gonna be here a while.

I still feel bad with myself I used mimic +10 with rivers of blood to barely defeat her.... I hope 1 day I do it without those 2 , but have in mind I was already at the 18 hour mark fighting her
I cannot even fathom beating this boss without a fully upgraded long shield. The ability to easily block nearly the entire waterfowl move alone makes the boss a good 30% easier
Boss is EXTREMELY vulnerable to bleed and you can easily dodge her attacks with bloodhound step, but since no one wants to use those mechanics this fight becomes 100x harder than it has to be
@@faydn3150 my build was pure strength and endurance so that didn't really occur to me. The fully upgraded visage shield and golden halbred did me pretty good. Got her after roughly 20-25 tries
@@navid3132 I used whips with bloodhound-blood, and even though the damage is trash she staggered every attack and I was able to cancel her waterfowl before she got it off sometimes. Satisfying af

I took her down with Gransax, no shield. Just snipe her from faraway
True but really it's all about practising the dodge timings in this fight. Everything is dodgeable and many attacks are punishable
How did she get the valkyrie arm? Did she get it from millicent?
