4:54 he hit you so hard it went into your next life
From 500 hours of playing and speed running Elden Ring I've noticed a trend that this game is just delayed attacks trying to catch your roll and that 90% of the time you want to roll into enemy attacks so that your hit box doesn't get caught in a lingering attack animation that instantly hits you the second your s run out.
I think you need 6 hours to notice that
It's interesting because most of the Soulsborne games have one or two endgame bosses that use delayed attacks, but Elden Ring seems to be thriving with those bosses.
This is very true. More so than previous souls games. Also, a lot of the end game bosses have very lengthy combo strings and quick poke attacks designed to make the player panic and back pedal. If you pay attention, most of these attacks do about 200-300 damage which is nothing. So it’s a good idea to try to spot these trends and either hit trade if you have a high damage weapon, or build up confidence to make an aggressively spaced attack.
For instance, maliketh first phase does this double slash with his dagger, if you jump attack you’ll poise through it or you can run right under his arm while he’s attacking to outspace him. In his second phase, those leap attacks that he has which are hard to tell what move he will do, you can actually get quite a few hits in before his next attack.
With Godfrey those quick stomps you can jump over to do a jump attack.
Margott’s back slash into an evade you can dodge into a rolling or jump attack.
Radagons 3 hit basic attack chain you can weave rolling attacks between each hit.
I could go on. The boss combat system is quite unique compared to the older ones. There’s three type of moves. The main idea is that they have roll catching combo chains which you can weave attacks in between. Quick, low damage attacks which are very hard to avoid but easy to trade with or follow up attacks on. Then the typical neutral attack chains from all souls bosses that have a vulnerable moment in which you can get some hits in.
Previous games don’t really have much bosses that flows in all 3 types pretty well but it makes bosses that much more chaotic and fun to fight
Ironic considering Maliketh is one of the few bosses in the game that doesn't spam delayed attacks.
@@ates423 The problem with the bosses that have time when you can weave in a single attack between their attacks is for heavier weapons you may just be unable to get off an attack which is extremely frustrating when you can’t punish for a long period of time. Also for Malenia for example for waterfowl dance you would think you would be able to get a few free hits off for dodging it because it’s so incredibly hard to dodge. However, she can just continue her combo with no delay if you go to punish her. Also when bosses mix up combos it makes it hard to tell when you can safely punish. For a move you punished earlier you might just end up getting caught out by another attack they added on this time and sometimes they might just add on an additional attack to the additional attack so you can never be 100% sure they are done so you can punish. That’s what I don’t like about this game in comparison to say dark souls 3. Also bosses seem to be designed around having a spirit summon to help which is something I don’t like. Dark souls 3 although it’s linear it helps make the fights appropriate to your level and they are only ever meant to fight you 1 v 1.
As someone who fought Maliketh with power stanced greatswords, gotta say, I relate to connor.
My main weapon was the Starscourge Greatswords on my first run - I got real good at the memorising what was an opening and what was going to get me killed if I attacked.
Maliketh got the drip
you’re telling me that i could’ve ran past that tree sentinel instead of spending 2 hours trying to kill him….
F
Koala brain moment.
Its worth the armor is omega drippy
Should’ve cheesed with scarlet rot
@@gelatinousjoe7979 I think they patched it. I got Rot Breath and would go really close to him to make sure he got the full effect (fully charged too).
The first time it worked, does about 5k damage. After that, even if you do three fully charged ones as fast as possible, it will only do the initial damage (couple hundred aka nothing) but none the damage over time whatsoever. This is 4 days ago.
I ended up just taking the 5k and killing him normally after that, since he was basically starting the fight at 65% or so health.
That guy is INSANE. I had a good build and 1-3 shot many bosses. The bosses that I had trouble with, I at least saw progress and an end goal, so I never gave up. With this guy, though, bruh… it was 1.5 hours of complete bullshit so I just cheesed it (or tried to) and got the 5k down then 2 shot him.
FUCK that guy.
The real boss here is that walk you have to do each time you lose
That walk is nothing compared to the walks you had to do in previous titles. We should be grateful
@@mingQWERTY nah, it's terrible design that shouldn't exist anywhere in this game. this game itself has proved this by showing the importance of having the stakes of marika to keep up the pace of gameplay
@@herb2110 Except if you pay attention, there are no stake of marikas in Crumbling Farum Azula. The only place that doesn't have any stakes in the game. This probably has to do with the fact that the entire island is out of time and place. The Dragons did serve another outer god, not the greater will so there'd be no reason why stakes of Marika would be there.
@@mingQWERTY Farum Azula has been (at least for some time) watched over by Maliketh, who is literally Marika's half brother, I think it's quite strange that none were ever built there. And even then, you could just do a site of grace instead.
@@mingQWERTY and raya lucaria cause renalla is mad at marika lol
Whats scary for me is most of elden ring boss/gods are basically on their dying/weakened version
Imagine them on their prime especially maliketh, the grim reaper of gods
"Didn't even poh poh poh"
If he didn’t use jumping attacks he could have defeated him much faster
Common mistake, people think all you has to do with heavy weapons is spam jump in any situation and miss out a lot of damage or trade hits.
Expect mali keeps moving
@@thegreatkrimpus6139 I didnt even know of jump attacks and it took me like 20 tries to defeat maliketh
Does he have troubles with Godskin Duo or he just breeze it?
Looking forward for 2 others bosses then
The bosses in the game are... a lot faster and react/counter to your actions than other Dark Souls title.
I would avoid heavy slow weapons unless you want hard mode from the get go.
They buffed all the colossal weapons to make them faster in the last patch, it's not nearly as bad as it used to be
If played properly you can stagger the hell out of bosses.
I guess im a God for finishing it twice with great sword on 1st run and great hammer on 2nd. 😎
the grafted blade is good asf ngl
Using heavy weapons just means you have to play slower and go for the big openings not the small ones. It’s only hard mode if you try to do high DPS with a heavy weapon. Conor only won once he stopped going for the little openings and focused more on dodging and going for the openings where he knew he could land an attack
Ah yes a strength build first playthrough fighting malekith is beautiful indeed
Honestly, Maliketh was the first boss that I done first try. Without any summons or anything.
Currently I am stuck at Radagon though :x
For me, he was harder than Malenia
Maliketh kicked my ass until I figured out you could parry him with an item
Same he was the first boss I beat with no summonings but it took me 3 days lol
@@mike_cherry77 are you new to souls games?
@@bilalel-baher7859 yea I am lol
"what happened to Lady Dimitrescu" wrong game? xD
Man they really fucked up some boss fights by not refilling bosses healthbars for cinematic phase 2.
Maliketh should have gotten the 2nd healthbar, not Malenia. Although I do understand why they didn't do that given that he's a required boss fight. But still, he's such a great fight and it's such a shame his second phase is over in like 6 hits. I'd rather fight 4 malikeths in a row than enter malenia's boss room one more time.
@@Fyrestaryeah, Malenia is just boring
The only boss that feels unfair to fight. Hard for the sake of being hard, I mean, it is awesome to dodge her firsts attacks, because you feel like it is an actual duel, but then it comes that attack... Meanwhile Maliketh is just so fun to fight against, yes the dmg is insane, but it is way easier to dodge than Malenia blade of Miquella. Also she ruined Rafahn's mind, so f*ck her
Maliketh is Mr. Dancy Pants.
I wouldn't pay $8 for a coffee no matter what size it is.
Even with “rivers of blood” it was pretty difficult
first time after he changed he handed me my ass in 30 sec and i got 1000 yard stare from dancer ptsd, after the 8th try my ptsd wasnt getting any better xD
The way I beat this guy was basically rotten breath and run away while he is being eaten by scarlet rot.
Play like a coward boys and girls, thats how you git gud here lol
He has low poise just stunlock him with duel greatswords lol
Lmao
im so glad strength isnt the most easy broken overpowered shit like it was in ds3
1:40 bro looks like mrbeast
Does Conner not know how to use anything other than jumping heavy attack?
Strength build woes.
@@HellecticMojo Not so much anymore. I don't know when he streamed this, but they recently did an update that pretty drastically increased the attack speed of colossal weapons so now you can actually do more than a jumping heavy attack with colossals and still be effective.
he doesn't need to since jumping heavy is almost always the best option for Colossal Weapons in this game
If there’s one common thread I’ve noticed about runs like this, it’s that people who are way better than me at soulsborne games have way more trouble beating bosses than I do. That’s not to brag; my reflexes are awful and my arthritis makes my hands useless after a couple hours of playing. I’m really terrible, though I still have fun trying. It’s just that a lot of these fights seem to be designed specifically around using summons. The long combos, delayed attacks, massive AoE, having a little ghost to draw aggro for a minute to catch your breath feels like the way it’s supposed to be played. I can understand why top tier players forego the spirit ashes entirely, but hey, I’ll take whatever accessibility options I can get. If only they’d give me the option to make the subtitles larger.
honestly you are correct and it fucking sucks. As a veteran of this series, I absolutely confirm these fights ARE built with summons in mind, specially when you compare movesets to bloodborne bosses. Which kinda sucks, because... spirit summons just die. after upgrading they last a bit longer, but not the entire fight. The best summons are those that are good at distracting and not dying rather than helping you. And fighting those bosses alone is, as a result, not fun.
I'd understand(if not fully agree with) if the idea was that they wanted to make "bullshit movesets but you get breathing room with distraction" the entire fight by letting you summon more spirits when they die(even if not the same one twice), AND there were bosses meant to be fought alone where you can't use spirits(even if you can summon players), but this flavour of boss for the whole game kinda sucked.
@@OpXarxa I find the legendary ashes tend to perform pretty well once they're fully upgraded, but I do spend a lot of time trying to take care of them in a fight. I'm also running an int/dex build that lets me draw aggro from across the arena if I see them getting into trouble though, so that might have something to do with it. IDK, I'm not a huge Soulsborne fan, or at least the Souls part of it. I adore Bloodborne; it's the only other From game I've managed to beat. I don't mind the way Elden Ring does most of it's bossfights. I don't have the perspective of a longtime fan though.
@@gatling216 tbf an int build plays very, very differently, summon aside. it changes from having to be extremely aggressive, to being a mobile artillery while the boss is focusing on your summon and fully focus on dodging when it's attention is on you.
@@OpXarxa That would be true if I didn’t forget I had spells, hence the dex split. I spend an embarrassing amount of time panic rolling away whilst wishing I had a long range option.
@@gatling216 ...dex is for faster casting. And the primary spellcaster weapon(moonlight sword) has energy beams as a regular attack.
Maybe trading combat isn't the most skillful of them all. But sometimes it is fun. But yes, blood builds are easier.
Me not being good and using Starscourge Greatswords on a pure str build uhh made this fight something let's just say that...
I am Malenia, Blade of Miquella.
*You have summoned Let me solo her as a cooperator*
@@sharkuel His strength...extraordinary.
How's he immune to the max health decrease?
He's not. He did this fight before 1.04, which means that his life bar just shrinks instead of turning partially grey when his max HP is decreased.
Fuck man, you know after the Dark Souls trilogy and Bloodborne I can safely say that I have retired from FromSoftware games. I will never attempt Elden ring!
If you don't want to, that's fine. But ER is easily the most accessible of the games, and I think definitely worth even as a souls vet
Play the game coward.
Malenia's waterfowl dance is bullshit but honestly other than that she's not hard, bordering on a pretty nice fight for late game
Maliketh I 100% believe to be notably harder than just about every other late game boss tbh, his second phase attack range and speed is insane, I couldn't even imagine doing it without a summon
Maliketh is SUPER predictable once you learn the tells and patterns though
There's no world in which Maliketh is harder than Malenia. And there's no universe where he isn't a better boss than her in every way.
Also you could use the pillars to give yourself breathing room . That’s how I was able to solo him
@@Fyrestaryeah Malenia blade of Miquella is just boring, it feels hard for the sake of being hard. The fight starts fun because it feels like a duel, she is not aggressive, but patient as well as the player, but then it comes that attack...and then she recovers her health in her second phase and the dmg of her attacks just becomes ridiculous. Meanwhile Maliketh feels so fun to play against, his lore is also way more interesting than just being a good warrior with space cancer, not even an awesome warrior because she lost to Radahn (which was genuinely a cool guy) and in desperation she used her space cancer turning him into a mindless zombie
TBH i didn't enjoy this boss fight, i just go mimc and even with that, still lose one extra time, not my favorite boss, but the design of the boss its superb
yea, it’s a cool boss design but the max health cap reduction + lifesteal + his ability to fly is a bit much
Hell, i beat the elden beast in less tries
The final boss was easier than this pile of horseshit
@@tacticallemon7518 you need to get under him and be just as aggressive, don't hide behind pillars, also you can jump attack over his wide sweeps and avoid his destined death aoe by getting behind him or next to his hip.
@@tacticallemon7518imo he was too easy having only a half healthbar at 2nd phase
Maliketh is easy. His attack windows are extremely obvious and he will punish you for trying any other time.
I dont understand the appeal of these crap masssive n slow weapons...
Poise break city it's easy mode
