Women's Rights in the Quran? Out of Context (Part 8) - Omar Suleiman

  • An engaging conversation between a Christian Pastor and a Muslim Imam, "Out of Context" is a 14 part Interview series answers pressing questions about Islam and gives valuable insight into the spirit of the faith.
In Part 8 of the interview, Shaykh Omar takes questions from the audience. The Quran is very progressive with regards to women, says Sheikh Omar Suleiman. It was the first religious scripture to grant women the right to vote, inherit, choose who to marry and pursue divorce. In fact Prophet Muhammad was even accused of being a feminist. Yet we do have regressive cultures that fail to live up to such standards, but their regression stems from their economic and political situation not because of Islam.

Islam is the doom and destruction of mother cultures...while it is in the process of disintegrating the source, over centuries , it mutates into something truly grotesque and defies all conceptions of humanity, and the response to that is always a call for more islam.
Not knowing that what they had , was really what was meant for them, they deviated, and forever will they go stumbling around like fools. Never knowing, forever hating ...that where they come from .
Their's is a condition to be truly spat on.

I totally agree. I am a proud Muslim and proud Pakistani, but I am, unfortunately, totally against Pakistani family system. Joint family system where other people's daughters are brought to your house to serve you and tolerate the emotional and sometime physical abuse (and, of course, bring A LOT of dowry). It's completely anti-Islam family setting due to free mixing.
I am 23 and am too afraid to marry into a Pakistani family. I pray sometimes to Allah that my husband is not a Pakistani. I feel bad and sad about this, but that's reality, unfortunately 😔

24:31. showing your hair to those includes your husbands sex slaves(right hand possess).

I like the way you stick blames on Islam as though its followers are perfect human beings it's like blaming food for causing obesity instead of someone's poor diet program...
Islam is perfect that it's vulnerable, anybody can misuse it for their ill agendas, first Islam is not forced onto anyone, secondly learn to separate culture from religion...
Understand people and religion are two separate things otherwise you will always be stereotyping everything...
The bottom line in this is seek knowledge and understand instead of just throwing out pointless views!

    • @afreendani

Don't talk about choice because it's something that is everywhere around the world, many families regardless of religion, race, name it give no chance to their members to chose their ways, they always sow a seed of their desire into them and a threat would rain down once any of them tries to overlook that, so don't stick that on Islam, in fact Islam allows questioning what one doesn't understand...
There isn't anything like one has no choice in Islam, so please understand before you stereotype!

Before Aristotle, a man who held that the subjugation of women was both "natural and a social necessity" became a core text, which influenced key Muslim thinkers who shaped medieval Islamic Jurisprudence/Law (Fiqh), and before the medieval scholars enshrined their views on gender roles in to law, men and women were accorded far more equal freedoms in Islam. There are thousands of Islamic women Scholars scattered throughout Islamic history. Women scholars taught judges and imams, issued fatwas, and travelled to distant cities. Some made lecture tours across the Middle East. The man who started the religion which now is the chosen way of life for a quarter of the Earth's population, Mohamed (peace be upon him), was proposed to by his first wife, Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her) who ran a caravan business in Mecca. A wealthy and successful trader, she was also a twice-widowed single mother, fifteen years Mohamed’s (peace be upon him) senior, and his boss. Her marriage proposal to the future Prophet was forthright: “I like you because of our relationship, your high reputation among your people, your trustworthiness, your good character and truthfulness.”

I can give you Quranic verses and hadees to prove how Islam is demeaning towards women. Muslim scholars try to defend this inequality and unfair treatment with women to make Islam look better but the Quran says otherwise. So please accept that our Islam treats women inferiorly.

Subhanallah! It's lovely that America has witnessed such a diverse population of Muslim women in their midst, who occupy various positions. But like Imam Omar Suleiman noted, many Southeast Asian countries aren't as supportive of this because of their culture and this does not mean this reflects Islamic beliefs and teachings. It's merely their traditional ways which even certain Non-Muslims in their area practice as well.

Talal J Islam is not a race it is a religion that spans many continents and races, African, Asian and European. Because someone has a different opinion to you and thinks your religion is nonsense doesn't make them racist. They just don't agree with outlook on the world and by the way it's not slander it's libel when it's in print, slander is the spoken word. No surprise though you're about as informed on this as you are on what constitutes racism.
Islam and any criticism of it has nothing to do with race, it's a religion. Does a criticism of Catholicism or Christianity constitute racism? No because neither are a race. Typical leftist nonsense if someone doesn't agree with you brand them a
" Phobe " of some discription to try to discredit them, rather than add a rational argument. You and your religion are in the dark ages, more and more people have had enough of this nonsense. I'm not talking about far right groups, I mean the general public.

You have to look at what you mean by progress because what the liberals see as progress and what Islam teaches are different. That being said the Quran is not misogynistic, in Islam men and women are equal creations under the eyes of Allah, but not the same. Both men and women have different rights and responsibilities in different aspects. For example men inherit more than women, or men being the ones who are obligated to fight in wars or provide for the family, while women do not or e.t.c. Islam will not conform to what you call progress. And calling the prophet (s.a.w.) a pervert is also inaccurate. Considering the fact that while he was preaching Islam in Makkah the pagans offered him the best of women but he rejected that offer saying “ even if you give me the sun and the moon I will not stop” or something along those lines, by the way he also only had one wife at the time as well.
And in Islam we are not even allowed to physically touch women meaning a pat on the back or hand shake we are also not even allowed to stare at women so that also refutes your judgement of the prophet (s.a.w.).

therefore, its best solution is women not leading mans in prayer at all.

Only than a believer will strive for truth, or act upon it. May Allah guide is all to absolute truth. Ameen

The rights given to women in the Quran are remarkable historically but how are those rights comparable to now? Many can argue well that those same rights have not gone enough to keep up with modern progress in women's struggles. The worst handicap is the idea that Gods rules in the Quran cannot change to keep in line with the progress in women's rights. For example, God gave women a right to inheritance when they had none. But God gave them less then men. This of course is an improvement in women condition from none to some. But the liberation movement have won great strides and are now demanding equal shares. The Muslim refuse given that the Quran limits it to a certain portion. So the Quran gives women historically unprecedented right but those same rights are not enough to modern standards where women are asking for unprecedented rights and muslims using the Quran cannot accept far more equal rights for women.

I think the property distribution is in sync with responsibilities men and women have been correspondingly given, for example, Muslim men's earnings are to be used for various other members of the family but a woman's earning is exclusively hers!
Further, the label of anything being progressive has always been very much debatable, besides there being no standard/model of Progressivenes, how could it be measured as to whether every next step is in the right direction etc.
Also, if the Quranic verses were shunned or relegated on the expense of each so-called new progressive step, which may not be in substance the one, for example, industrial revolution radically raised our living standards but we have now ended up with Life-threatening climate change along with the possibility of even the earth being rendered not suitable for living beings ( may become no more living planet), it'd be as if God Almighty didn't know the future etc...

In Islam, the Qur'an is the final revelation sent from God. You can't add to it or change it. With regards to women getting less in inheritance than men, this is because men are commanded to take up the financial burden in a family - spending on his wife and children's needs. A woman does not need to do that and any money she earns it is hers and no one else's. Thus, logically, it makes no sense to give women equal inheritance to men when their husbands will be taking care of them for the rest of their lives. The fact that they get such a significant portion at all is in and of itself a huge mercy to women from God. The way I like to see it is where inheritance for a man is his economic livelihood, for a woman, it is her insurance policy.

Speaking of Afro Americans who choosing Islam. To choose a religion has always a reason or two.Afro Americans choose Islam just because the ruling class in America has 'chosen' an other religion. That formula fits everywhere in the world. Look around and see how different people / countries have chosen different religions just to fight the other nations (normally in the neighborhood). They gather religious people around themselves using them as soldiers against the other. That's the crazy thing a bout religion, dividing people and put them against each other in the name of the "defending father land". Please just read the history and see from this aspect for once, you will be pursued how this formula is true. You will se how religions and their brunches are mapped to the geographically separated peoples and nations. That's an other reason why even religions get many brunches. as many as the amount of different nations with political and economical interests. However, to "choose" or not a religion has taken place through the influence of such parameters as the individual's history, social, cultural and pykological status.Discussion on the subject of religion is outside the scope here.

What he's saying could be a very deceptive way of telling the truth. What's allowed in islam is indeed dependant on the culture, that surrounds it. If muslims are in a majority then they can behave in a totally different way then when they are not in a majority. I've heard many muslims talk about this. If you are in a country where you are in a minority then you should talk in a different way (taqiya). Some even say that it's ok to lie if you are in a minority and to hide things that would cause the non-muslim majority to become suspicious of islam. A lot of this behavior is justified by looking at mohammeds life. When he was in power he acted differently then we he wasn't in power.
So the speaker here could be telling the truth. Namely that in the US he'll act in a way that's not offensive to werstern people. He will act in a way that will allow islam to spread without being seen as a threat. But in another cultural background (if muslims are a majority) then you can freely express your views implement the sharia etc.
To understand why i'm saying this one should consider the following surahs in the koran:
4:34 (men superior then women, men allowed to beat women)
    2:228 (superiority of men)
    33:59 (women should cover themselves)
33:33 (abide quietly in your home)
2:223 (a man can have sex with his wife whenever he pleases and however he pleases)
And that's just the quran. There's a lot more horrible stuff in the hadiths and the sira. So i honestly don't understand how this imam can say what he's saying. It only makes sense to me in the context mentioned above.
If someone knows what i'm missing, then please let me know. I'd love to find out.

I'm not taking verses out of context. The koran and religious texts in general (bible included) always had the problem of being vague and therefore people always intepreted them differently.
I find the interpretation of the islamic state the most compelling/honest though. It's fits best with what Mohammeds supposed life was like and has the least contradictions.
But that's just my opinion. As i've said the text is vague and it's easy to interpret it different ways, which explains why so many muslims have interpreted the text in so many different ways. Muslims don't even agree amongst themselves about what the koran means or which hadiths are legitimate etc.
But it's the same in christianity. One sect believes A and another sect believes B - it's a huge mess.
One would think that if any of those books had anything to do with a god that they'd be written more clearly in a way that would allow believers to agree. That's just another reason why it's more plausible that no gods were involved in the writtings of those books. They were written and invented by normal, fallible human beings. That's the most rational interpretation of those books. They aren't holy, they were invented by normal people several hundred years ago and they reflect the primitive, limited knowledge of the people back then.

Timothy 2:11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

Jonah thrane lets get with sources and quotesO you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion. And do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them unless they commit a clear immorality. And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good. and Quran doesn't even focus on hijab it just says hide your private parts so hadiths which are Muhammad pbuh words if they contradict the quran they are to be discarded because the only word that is preserved is word of God.And why dont you bring up quotes which says women are less then Men one you would give is that surah baqarah verse 282 in which women's testimony is half of that of men but that is not the case if you read the whole verse you will see that its only talking about transactions Islam expects men to be the breadwinners of their families. Since financial responsibility is shouldered by men, they are expected to be well versed in financial transactions as compared to women. As a second option, the witness can be one man and two women, so that if one of the women errs the other can remind her. The Arabic word used in the Quran is ‘Tazil’ which means ‘confused’ or ‘to err’. Many have wrongly translated this word as ‘to forget’. Thus financial transactions constitute the only case in which two female witnesses are equal to one male witness. There are about five verses in the Quran which speak about witnesses without specifying man or woman. While making a will of inheritance, two just persons are required as witnesses.n Surah Maidah chapter 5 verse 106, the Glorious Quran says:
"Oh you who believe! When death approaches any of you, (take) witnesses among yourself when making bequests.”
“Two just persons of your own (brotherhood) or other from outside if you are journeying through the earth and the chance of death befalls you." [Al-Quran 65:2]
“Two persons endued with justice in case of talaq. "Four witnesses are required in case of charge against chaste women” [Al-Quran 24:4]
There are some scholars who are of the opinion that the rule of two female witnesses equal to one male witness should be applied to all the cases.
This cannot be agreed upon because one particular verse of the Quran from Surah Noor chapter 24, verse 6 clearly equates one female witness and one male witness:
"And those who launch a charge against their spouses, and have (in support) no evidence but their own - their solitary evidence can be received."Since, as a general rule, women back then were inexperienced with complicated financial arrangements, accepting two women in the place of one man would have been more practical.
Considering the social conditions of the time, it was itself a major change in favour of women that they were allowed to participate in financial contracts in this way. Remember that in the U.S, for example, women were not allowed to own property before 1890; and that is about 12 centuries after the Quran was revealed.See now here are quotes and sources. This is a specific case, not in general, especially matters of financial transaction; because there are other instances where female testimony supersedes male testimony.
As for example, if a husband accuses her wife of adultery and he is the only witness; he is to pronounce 4 times that he has seen her committing the adultery.
But if the wife testifies 4 times that she has not done it, then who is to be accepted?
It is the wife’s testimony that is to be accepted.
So there is no reason to believe that women are less intelligent than man
