The Medina Charter of Coexistence - Out of Context (Part 2) - Omar Suleiman

  • An engaging conversation between a Christian Pastor and a Muslim Imam, "Out of Context" is a 14 part Interview series answers pressing questions about Islam and gives valuable insight into the spirit of the faith.
    In Part 2 of the interview with Dallas-based Pastor Mike Baughman, Imam Omar Suleiman tears down some of the most popular misconceptions about Islam, the Quran and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Is the Quran inherently violent? Does the Quran contradict itself? Does Islam advocate Holy Wars through jihad? Is Islam anti-Semitic?
    Suleiman says that statistically, the Quran is no more violent as a scripture than the Old and New Testaments, noting that any scripture taken out of context can be made to appear violent. He explains that if you study the Quran chronologically, you will learn the real meaning of jihad, refuting that there is such a thing as Holy War in Islam. In the early period of revelation, when the Muslims were a persecuted minority in Mecca, the believers were urged to "respond to that which is evil with that which is better“, laying emphasis on the concept of jihad as a personal spiritual struggle against the lower self. Muslims were never commanded to take up arms except later on to struggle against oppression and to defend themselves.
    When the Muslims were in a position of power in Medina, Prophet Muhammad acted as both a messenger and a statesman, drafting what became known as the Medina Charter, possibly the earliest example of a state constitution in history. This nuanced, accepting and tolerant charter emphasized the Quranic concept of “there is no compulsion in religion”, which is a seminal verse that was revealed in Medina when the Muslims had absolute authority but coexisted peacefully with an often hostile Jewish minority, establishing their rights and reinforcing alliances with many of their tribes. This proves that Islam is by no means historically anti-Semitic, especially since the Prophet himself had financial dealings with Jews. Historically-speaking, under Ottoman rule the Jews thrived and even allied with Muslims against the Crusades.

    Wow I love this series. It is literally what we need. Muslims and non Muslims. There are a lot of Muslims who become extremists because they do not know their own religion. Education and understanding is a beacon of light for humanity. I applaud the efforts of the pastor and imam for coming together and having these enlightening discussions. May they be blessed for their efforts to bring peace and understanding to our communities.

    The word Jihad means to strive ( make great effort ) on the path that leads to Allah ~ It also means a self struggle to overcome our selfish and misguided behavior ( Thought, Speech, Actions ) ~ So we can cultivate those divine spiritual qualities ~ That Allah possesses ~ The spirit of kindness, The spirit compassion ~ The spirit of love etc.... Allah is a spiritual ( Being ) he is not political ~ Muslims on the other hand are political ~ Therein lies the problem ~

    • @tplez1659
      @tplez1659 Před 7 lety +1

      You say that Allah is a spiritual being but if He designed and created all that exists, how can you separate Him from his creation (i.e. politics). Why do you say that Muslims are political as if they have to either be political OR spiritual?

      Violent jihadists do not believe -- and will NEVER believe -- that they are taking violent texts (from Koran, Hadith, and Sira) are "out of context," as the sheikh in this video series alleges.
      The leader of ISIS has the most advanced degree in Islamic Studies in the world (from Al-Azhar University), and he firmly believes, along with all the jihadis who have committed nearly 29,000 documented acts of terror since 9-11, that violently fighting in Allah's cause is the highest form of Jihad: "Mohammed said, 'A single endeavor (of fighting) in Allah's Cause in the forenoon or in the afternoon is better than the world and whatever is in it.' " (Sahih Bukhari, 4.52.50, also 4.52.51-52, and Sahih Muslim, 20.4643). The leader of ISIS calls for a death sentence to any and all Muslims who do not believe this, condemning them as heretics.
      Why don't Islamic authorities simply remove the verses that ISIS and other jihad groups love to quote in order to justify terrorism? Separate the violent texts and never reprint them. To leave them in only encourages weak-minded Muslims to take them literally and to commit further atrocities.

    • @MichaelMaitri
      @MichaelMaitri Před 7 lety

      The highest form of Jihad is love for the Creator ( Allah ) and for his creation ( The manifested world ) ~ When we do things for political reasons we serve our Ego ~ When we do things in the spirit of love , In the spirit of kindness , In the spirit compassion etc ... ~ We serve Allah ~ A single endeavor of ( mindfulness ) in Allah’s cause ~ In the forenoon or in the afternoon ~ Is better then the world and whatever is in it ~ Being mindful of Allah is transformative ~ It will transform your thoughts , speech , and actions and make you a better person ~

    • @b9court
      @b9court Před 7 lety +1

      The violent, political jihadist Muslims believe that the single endeavor of shedding blood for Allah is the highest form of jihad, and they will kill you for believing otherwise. They will call you takfir, worse than an unbeliever, and tell you, "To Allah, there are no animals viler than those who do not believe and remain unbelievers" (Sura 8.55).
