Is Jesus Christ Divine? Out of Context (Part 11) - Omar Suleiman

  • An engaging conversation between a Christian Pastor and a Muslim Imam, "Out of Context" is a 14 part Interview series answers pressing questions about Islam and gives valuable insight into the spirit of the faith.
    In Part 11 of the interview, Shaykh Omar takes questions from the audience. The best way to alter the public perception of Muslim women in the West, says Sheikh Omar Suleiman, is for them to continue to be out there and for thriving, successful Muslim women to engage fully in their communities. Regarding the debate over the divinity of Jesus, a study of early Christianity will reveal that it was far from monolithic. As Muslims, we hold Christ in high esteem, we view him as one of God's greatest messengers who came to confirm the law of Moses, we even believe that he is the Messiah, but we do not believe that he is God or the son of God. Finally, regarding the virgins awaiting the faithful in heaven, the number 72 is merely metaphorical to denote multitude. In the context of the revelation of the Quran, the notion of having multiple spouses in heaven is related to the idea that heaven is what you want it to be. At the time it was revealed, the whole world was largely polygamous, so having many spouses was very desirable.

    Really appreciate the pastor as a good mediator in this discussion. As a muslim, I also learned a lot of things from this series that I never really learned more in depth, especially the historical part. Growing up, being religious is mostly being able to recite the surahs, but not really understanding the context. Studying the history of the Prophets and the texts/Quran goes hand in hand. After I moved abroad and had people asking questions about my religion, then I realized how little I knew about it. Great explanation and grace when answering those difficult questions.
    Jazzakallah Shaykh Omar and Ustadh Nouman Ali for their efforts in educating people about Islam through this channel!

      Man I love the respect between them having a real and intelligent conversation, and those questions were tough, but it was not answered through google, but rather through sheikh Omar, and Pastor Mike. Alhamdulillah it is so nice to have a real conversation rather than another you tube comment war which resolves near nothing.
      I am pretty sure there is someone who will try to slander this comment or say something derogatory, but that is ok, these conversations naturally happen, it's just that youtube takes away any self consequences since anyone can be hidden and not actually have to talk face to face.
      sometimes even the real conversations are get heated, however it can be controlled with respect to both the persons arguing.
      May Allah bless Sheikh omar, Pastor Mike, and all the people who participated in this video.

Do not be afraid to accept the truth when it reveals it dear Brothers and Sisters. If you read the bible you will notice that jesus claimed to be god very often.(i did not count it but more than 100 times) He says for example he is the son of man, which means he is divine because the torah of the jews says that the son of man is a divine person. (Mark 10:45 Daniel 7:9 ff) Or he says that he is greater than the temple, although only god is greater than the temple. Matthew (12:6)

Yes there were wars fought and God commands in self defense for Muslims to protect their family and beliefs but ultimately strive for peace. So clearly whatever wars were fought between the people the Muslims were the ones striving for peace and have no hatred towards any of the people of the book.

    He gets out of his area of knowledge here talking about early Christianity and misrepresents the historical events surrounding the identity of Jesus and the acceptance of the Gospel accounts of Jesus life.
    Jesus is not the "Son of God" like the other prophets. He said that he was the "monogenes" Son of God (Greek meaning that he was completely unique and higher than anyone else referred to using the phrase "son of God").
    It is not debatable whether Jesus said these things concerning his divine authority on a historical level. It is simply the historical fact that the earliest sources all quote Jesus as having said such things. If you'd like to say that it's "debatable" then I suppose ALL of history is debatable and we shouldn't claim factual knowledge about ANYTHING which precedes our lifetimes...including Islam.

    • @parkerflop
      @parkerflop Před 7 lety +2

      It's totally debatable on a historical level, loads of historians and most if not all of critical historians deny that Jesus declared himself to be the son of God.
      The historicity of the gospels and other books in the Bible gets criticized all the time. Just because those sources are early does not mean they are true, or that the historicity of those texts does not withstand scrutiny.

    • @thapack45
      @thapack45 Před 7 lety +1

      Well I mean I can tell this is going to be pretty pointless to debate about because anyone can just say that something is doubtful and there you go...the New Testament accounts are early and widespread and have multiple lines of attestation. They are the only accounts of Jesus' life which pass all tests on this matter. I don't really know anyone credible who says Jesus didn't claim to be the Son of God..I mean I've heard people denying Jesus even existed at all and because they have PhDs people are running around acting like it's a real doubt. The evidence is as solid as it could ever really be or realistically be expected to be. If anyone wants to deny it then that's fine I guess but it's not sensible in the least and the people who do hold such positions are always either wrong about the evidence they are presenting (as the guy in the video) or they present it in dark and obscure frightfulness like we just can't really know anything. It's pretty silly.

      Paul corrupted Jesus’ teachings. Constantine and others following him did the same. Little of of Jesus’ message has survived in the current Bible. Even biblical scholars like Bart Ehrman claim many of the stories in the Bible are later added stories.

    • @thapack45

      @@keepitreelcatfishing5883
      These are just baseless assertions which are repeated over and over again by people who usually don't ever engage with the historical documentation. Bart Ehrman wouldn't even agree with you about most of it but because he's not a Christian and has notoriety you seem to feel comfortable assuming some kind of security in throwing his name out. He would torch you on most of this stuff. This entire made-up story about how Paul somehow came along and overturned the "true" teachings of Jesus and all of his early followers while not even 1 of the 12 apostles spoke against him is completely imagined. The truth is that if you wanted to leave out Paul's writings we would still see his teachings about Jesus. Peter was already preaching the gospel as Christians understand it in Acts chapter 2 which is before Paul has even converted. James, Peter, and Paul are all in agreement about true Christian practice in Acts 15. They do not condemn Paul for his gospel teaching. This revisionist history is an empty cloud dependent on the ignorance of those poor Muslims and unstudied people who hear it from confident deniers. Trying to claim Constantine somehow corrupted Christianity is even more laughable. He wasn't even the Emperor until 300 years after Jesus. By that time it would have been impossible to uproot or change the teachings of the church. He also knew almost nothing about theology. His only contribution to anything was to tell the Christian bishops to convene and settle their arguments. Anyone can theorize literally anything about history. That's what's so conventient about it. I can say I think unicorns came and took the true Gospel writings away and some guys on heroin rewrote the whole thing and lied. But without a shred of historical reason to believe it other than I just think so there is no reason to take it seriously.
