    Unlike their 2012, and 2009 encounter, and even an older Federer in 2017, the main problem is that so many shots are so short. That break in the 3rd set was due to his shots landing consistently deep, otherwise all match he was getting bullied by playing such short shots. Definitely a good match by Nadal, but Federer was very tentative.

      @jameswalker6864 Před 4 lety +12

      Excuses. Federer was already using in this match the new bigger racquet. Nadal dominates Federer 3-1 at the AO. The only differences in the 2017 AO final were:
      (1) In 2017 Nadal was 30 years old and slower than in 2009-2014. While Federer was even older, his game is more offensive and depending on shot-making, while Nadal's game is more physically demanding and requires his peak speed to reach defensive balls.
      (2) Nadal was tired in the AO 2017 final, as he had played a 5 hours semifinal with Dimitrov and had one less day to rest before the final. Nadal.hksmelf confirmed in the post-match interview that he was tired.

    • @ketan6182

    • @jameswalker6864

      @@ketan6182Excuses. Federer was using the same exact racquet size for the backhand in the AO 2014 but he couldn't get pass Nadal cause Nadal was playing at his peak in AO 2014. Nadal was 1) younger, 2) faster, and non-tired in the AO 2012 and AO 2014. In the AO 2009 he won despite being tired cause he was in his physical prime. Nadal wasn't that "in form" in the AO 2017 final. He played a nearly 5 tours semifinal with Dimitrov and had one day less to rest than Federer, so he was kinda tired not to mention that he was 30 and so less fast. Nadal absolutely needs his peak speed as his style is more defensive than Federer's one. Nadal was 30 years old the whole 2017 and so not at his physical prime, also Federer skipped clay strategically to avoid losing to Nadal and lost to Delpo before losing to Nadal at the USO 2017 so his stats are inflated in that sense. Federer was using the same Big racquet in the AO 2014 than in the AO 2017 but he couldn't defeat a really in form Nadal. Anyway, Nadal domiantes Federer 3-1 at the AO.

    No one was better at taking Federer out of his comfort zone than Nadal. Far too often he has Federer on a string moving him from side to side behind the baseline. He hammers his forehand to break down Roger's backhand, if he slices Nadal almost always runs around to hit a forehand and he uses his powerful 2 handed backhand to stretch Federer to the forehand. Federer often came to the net in bad positions and Nadal easily passed him.

      I really don't get why people like so much Roger next to Rafa... I see modesty in both of them. I don't feel happy about Roger beating Rafa in AO 2017 personnally. Because Rafa came from way more far than Roger. Nadal was injured during 3 straight years and all. You know the story. To me it's sad. You can prefer a player next to another one but it's not necessary to disrespect the player who play against the one you like more.
      Without his injuries, Rafa would have already the grand slam record since a long time now. Before 2017, Federer was Nadal's little bitch for one full decade.

      It's mental : All of these players are very very good the margin between who wins in matches like wimbledon 2007-2008 ROme 2006 Ao 2009 is very slim . So I do think what matters is the mental strenght : from 2008-2014 federer always had the pressure of the GOAT of the number one of the calendar grand slam + all the loses in clay so in that period rafa had the edge no doubt.
      But in 2017 Federer didn't play for 6 months didn't win a slam for 5 years , he had no pressure compared to other years so he was able to get a win against rafa , and an other , and an other one , and ect ... so that's the way the rivalry turned around it's mental I do think now it's rafa who has mental barriers against roger

      AO's courts typically were very slow prior to 2017. All Rafa had to do to beat Roger there was play some top spin forehand to that one handed backhand and Roger would shank eventually. Also, their 2009 and 2012 meetings were actually pretty close. I know their 2012 meeting may look like a one sided beatdown on paper, but it was a competitive match from start to finish.

      @@MrPatrickbuit "All Rafa had to do to beat Roger there was play some top spin forehand to that one handed backhand " Lol typical delusional fed fan, attributing Nadal's success to courts being slow even though he barely lost that 2017 final to Federer.
      Nadal reached 5 finals here, 2 loses where he was a break up in a fifth set against both Federer in 2017 and Djokovic in 2012, and one lose due to injury vs Wawrinka in 2014, Nadal was better than Federer in those years that's the only explanation, in fact Nadal is better than Federer in direct match up on any tournament where Federer doesn't get half of his points from fucking service winners, if it becomes a baseline battle Nadal has an 80 % chance of winning, pure and simple, Federer can only win in very special circumstances vs Nadal.

    • @MrPatrickbuit
      @MrPatrickbuit Před 4 lety +3

      Gherbi Hicham I never said anything about either player being better but ok. Also, the fact that Nadal loses to Fed as soon as the courts are fast really just proves my point, not yours. Whether it be in 5 sets or not, at the end of the day Fed won. And being “up a break” at 3-1 in a set means literally nothing. That was not a choke at all. Nadal is definitely a better baseliner than Fed, but just because you prefer that as a playing style doesn’t make Federer’s serve cheap. The guy is the same height as Rafa yet he has one of the best service games in the game. His serve is one of the most impressive serves in tennis history.
      The slow courts aren’t the issue here. Rafa’s matchup versus Fed is. Just look at the Fed vs Nole and Nadal vs Nole matchup. In that scenario, Nole has a two handed backhand which makes the biggest difference in the world. Fed has beaten prime Nole twice on every surface except grass and has a 31% winrate against prime Nole (2011 onwards.) Nadal has only beaten nole twice off clay and has a 26% winrate against prime Nole, but realistically it’s extremely low on every surface except clay, where it’s 66%. You can say “but Nadal was in bad form in 2015,” but has Nadal been able to beat Nole on a hardcourt since then? No he hasn’t.
      The slow courts are not the reason Fed can’t beat Rafa consistently, but they definitely play a role, because Fed has a one handed backhand. It has nothing to do with the *quality* of Fed’s backhand, but everything to do with the *stylistic feature* of his backhand.

      This Federer changed his racket into bigger racket in 2014🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 and lost 4 grandslam finals to Djokovic for sure.
      If he had use smaller racket he would definitely play better against Djokovic at grandslams for sure
      Nadal pushed Federer to 5 sets in Australian open 2017 finals when he lost speed,Strength,Stamina after turning age 30 also and Federer was using Bigger racket only that time.
      Rafael Nadal is just great grass court player but still he played best in first 2 sets against Federer also
      Later Federer dominated Nadal in 3rd set and 4th by putting pressure on him beginning actually in 2019 Wimbledon
      It's all about focus,Confidence,Training and mental strength actually not about rackets for sure

However the age difference is 6 years so it’s normal to not having it overlapping peaks. Nadal on clay peaked very early and even earlier on hard courts and grass in 2008/2010. Looking back on this match, I have little doubt in my mind 2017-18 Federer would have beaten Nadal. Federer did some things well, but often his finishing ability really let him down and he hit way too many routine balls long or into the net (perhaps partly due to getting used to the new racquet, which he's very well adjusted to now). He allowed too many very long rallies, which always favoured Rafa because his loopy balls have much more margin on them than Federer's, so they often ended with a Federer error. I'm watching this match imagining how 2017-18 Roger would have handled the balls coming over the net at him from Rafa. Rafa was very beatable in first set and a half, he only really stepped it up in the second half of the match because of the scoreline momentum and confidence he was gaining (largely due to Roger's failings). This new Roger would have taken time away from Rafa by standing further into the court and taking the balls earlier. He would have also been mentally stronger, with much more self-belief against his rival, which he clearly lacked here (you can see Nadal is still in his mind) - not enough positivity from Federer, too much negativity. Seeing what Roger has done recently helped me see these failings of Roger in this match - at the time I thought he played reasonably well and that it was completely down to Rafa playing too well. But looking back I see things very differently.

    • @MrPatrickbuit
      @MrPatrickbuit Před 6 lety +6

      FedX Very good analysis, though I would say long rallies don't just favor Nadal because of the margin on his top spin shots, but also because Federer can't generate as much power above his hip on his backhandas a player with a two handed backhand could. Federer also sliced way too much back then. And when Roger slices, it's almost always to Rafa's forehand, which is laggy and isn't bothered by backspin at all.
      In the end Rafa was set to dominate this H2H from day one, but 2017 Roger (especially the AO - Miami variant) could have made this rivalry a lot less one sided.

    • @gherbihicham8506
      @gherbihicham8506 Před 6 lety +7

      Nadal was much better here than in 2017, Federer had to fight back from 5th set lead against Nadal to win the match, LMAO what makes you think he can beat Nadal here? Even with all of the things he got in his favor(improved backhand, good serve etc..) in 2017, he barely even won the match, the Nadal of 2014-2012 definitely wins against any version of Federer on this court.

      @MrPatrickbuit Před 5 lety

      Jeffrey Kaufmann You say that, but Federer’s winrate over Nadal didn’t decrease over the years. Even when Federer was getting older and Nadal entered his physical prime, Federer maintained roughly the same win/loss ratio against Rafa. In fact, Federer has actually improved the H2H severely in the last few years, even though it’s Nadal who should have been having the advantage of being younger for almost a decade now.
      Most of the matches Federer lost to Nadal were from *2005 - 2008 and 2013.*
      We all know Nadal beats Roger, but the question is *why.* It’s not because he’s that much better. If he were, Roger wouldn’t be having a 34% winrate against prime Nole while Rafa only has a 25% winrate. And that’s while Federer and Nole met up the most when Federer was old too (33/34.)
      Then again, you’re probably the kind of person who says that Federer entered his prime at 34 and he could only beat Rafa and Nole while they were injured. There’s no use in arguing with you, because you’ve closed your mind from the beginning.
