  • This year, Shohei Ohtani has had one of the best seasons in baseball history. pitching, and hitting. But he wasn’t the first to do this, in fact many have, but today I will answer the question On everyone’s mind who did it first?

Everyone forgets Albert Spalding. Pitcher, centerfielder, first basemen 1871-1877. 252-65 win/loss record 2.13 ERA. Batted .313 in 1959 ABs.

Actually, in the very early days of the game, pretty much all pitchers did it to a certain extent. Teams only had nine players, so if you wanted to give a pitcher a day off, he had to play someplace.
