- “Baseball’s Bizarre History of Umpire Abuse”
A free CZcams exclusive baseball documentary written, produced, edited and narrated by Retro Baseball.
Over the past couple of years the likes of Angel Hernandez and Joe West have made the fan’s temptation to assault the umpire drastically increase. But you may think that no fan or player has ever been stupid enough to actually attack the umpire during a game, if you thought this, you would be very wrong to say the least, as Major League Baseball has endured a very bizarre in-depth history of sometimes violent umpire abuse.
Today I will tell you some of my favorite stories of forgotten hostile behavior towards are beloved umpire friends that I have found over the past few months of research.
I hope you enjoy.
One of my favorite stories that didn’t make it into the video’s run time:
In 1996, MLB player Roberto Alomar spat in umpire John Hirschbeck's face during a dispute. Alomar received a five-game suspension for the incident, but the punishment was served during the following season, and not the 1996 playoffs. MLB umpires, upset over the lack of an immediate suspension, threatened to go on strike before a federal judge prevented them from doing so.
Footage from the attack by Alomar: • Roberto Alomar Spits i...
Full game broadcast from that day: • Orioles vs Blue Jays (...
Also, here is a Wikipedia article involving other instances of umpire abuse (not exclusive to baseball) that you may enjoy.

And if you have the time, please let me know what you think of this video I’m always trying to make them better!
The st. Louis Cardinals win the World Series this year. Good video
I loved it
There was an umpire camp at the park near my house, I honestly always thought it was really sweet for them to have a camp for blind people once a year
This video has solidified this channel as my favorite on CZcams
This has got to be one of the best produced baseball documentaries on youtube
Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Someone always had a tomato to throw before 1950
Yeah, I’ve always wondered where all of the tomatoes came from, like do they just hand out tomatoes to every fan just in case the umpire makes a bad call?
Who doesn’t hold an extra tomato in his off hand at all times
Just in case
This didn't feel like a 15 minute video, in the best way, Good stuff dude
Thank you very much Mr. F!
Just found this channel, nice stuff...I've always thought the story of the Ruth-Shore combined no hitter was one of the best stories from the annals of baseball
Thank you, I greatly appreciate it.
The number of views on your videos is a crying shame. 10/10 content. Keep grinding you are for sure gonna blow up.
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words!
Fantastic production value, great video!
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words!
Just wanna say you are such an underrated channel and obv idk how busy you are but if you are able to upload more consistently you have the story telling and editing skills to be a top sports CZcamsr. Keep up math great work!
Thank you for the kind words, I greatly appreciate them. And yes, I’m trying to make my upload schedule better. I have just been working on a very long video for the past year or so and it’s slowed down my upload schedule tremendously. once I finish that I should be uploading more consistently.
First watched video from your channel. As a huge baseball nerd, I say thank you sir! Love the concept and the execution. Wishing you success bc it's well deserved!
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words!
OMG this was SO good.
Thanks, I really appreciate it!
A great video! Never seen a video about umpires before.
On a side note Im almost sure Angel Hernandez will end up as one of the most,if not the most, hated and controversial umpire to ever officiate in MLB.
Thanks!
Really great story-telling, I love your content! If I could be just a bit of a nuisance I thought maybe the music could be a tiny shade quieter, sometimes it was hard to hear you over it. Thanks for the content!
Thanks for the support! I have been working on balancing my audio better, so it will be better in the future.
This is such an amazing video! I can’t wait for more of them!
Thank you!
“Calls that only Rob Manfred can love”
😂😂😂😂
The baseball video I never knew I wanted.
A high quality retro baseball video
Thank you, kind sir.
Great video, can't even imagine the amount of research that needs to be done for these!
Thanks, I greatly appreciate it!
I love this video!!
Love when you upload good sir
Glad you enjoy them!
Your back!
Indeed, I am
5 seconds in and I subbed
Thanks, I really appreciate it!
Good stuff man! I’ve been a diehard baseball fan and historian and never knew any of this.
Thanks, I really appreciate it!
Reminder that alcohol makes people idiots. Be careful out there folks.
LETS GO NEW RETRO VID!! ❤
It is indeed a very exciting occasion.
Sometimes the CZcams algorithm just hits
It works in mysterious ways, but I’m glad it worked this time.
Hey you commented in one of my videos 2 years ago about me hitting a inside the the park homerun. well I’m paying a favor back! Also nice video
Thank you, I greatly appreciate it!
What a fun vid!
Thank you, I greatly appreciate it!
That Thanksgiving example was oddly specific…
Naw like what’s going on here ain’t no way you only got 3k subs these videos are quality. Something ain’t right here🤨
I’m glad you like them, It means a lot!
Regarding August 21, its possible they were all full-moons - I have no idea and I’m too lazy to find out. Doesn’t matter if it’s a day game, the full moon makes us act weird - ask your nurse/hospital employee friends to start paying attention - their worst/busiest days & nights are consistently on full moons if they pay attention
Angel Hernandez is the modern day example of bad umpiring.
Got in on the ground floor of this channel just so I can say I liked Retro Baseball before it was cool.
“Ruthlessly” 😏
from now on August 21 shall be known as national attack an umpire day.
I know its rude to say, and i am also aware that your videos probably take a while to make and that you are the most underappreciated channel on this site, but dude.. I'm going to need more content. daily or every other day would be fine but more than that would be ideal, thanks.
I wish I could, but it’s just basically impossible since the videos take 350+ man hours to create and I don’t have a team. I am also in the middle of working on a feature length film for the channel. after I’m done with that the videos will speed up, but eventually I’m going to try to get a team to help the videos come out sooner.
@@RetroBaseball im messing with you. your videos are amazing. every historical baseball story needs told. you are doing gods work brother.
@@jkeith2525 thank you, I greatly appreciate it!
W video
We have all been Nat Page at one point or another
this is truly inspirational.
I mean $20 in 1901 isn’t a small chuck of change.
Love the baseball stories from segregated era.
Turn up the foreground music.
Still bad because the K zone along with gambling on the tv makes people expect perfection not realizing that most players and managers actually enjoy the human element of the game. Umpires called their pitches in little league middle school highschool and everything up. They’re used to them
4:01 I thought there was an eyelash on my screen
I thought the same the first time I saw the image. It’s probably an error in the photo scanning or a scratch on the original photo but I’m not exactly sure.
Same
They should be better at their job then
angel hernandez be like
The impossible has happened
the elusive retro has crawled out of his basement with a new video, what an occasion.
WOOOOOO
Such wooooo
This almost makes me understand why umpires are so determined to ruin modern baseball and power trip whenever they can. Almost.
RETRO VIDEO OMG
It’s basically Christmas, it happens just as often.
Dadgum!!
Is this the reason why Umpires have began to be mad with power nowadays, by calling shitty calls and throwing out any player/manager who calls them out on it and why MLB isn't doing anything to hold them accountable for shitty calls?
BH😓
I’m still working on it every day! I will finish it if it’s the last thing I ever do.
@@RetroBaseball His spirit won't let me rest until his video is finished 😆
@@RetroBaseball I can’t wait!
Ahhhh
You seem rather excited.
It is absolutely absurd that baseball allows their umpires to be abused in the way they are. And even worse that many fans believe it is just "part of the game".
No other sport permits that.
You act like this level of abuse is still going on when in reality the amount of heckling umpires get these days is just standard for modern sports officials. The only chant you'll hear at every basketball arena in probably about half the games is "refs you suck." Regardless of it being right or wrong to pretend it's a baseball specific issue is just stupid.
If you really want to talk about modern abuse of officials then you might want to talk look into the shit soccer referees have to deal with in certain countries where its the biggest sport. Some of the shit they still have to endure goes a little farther than some heckling and mean tweets. So you say no other sports permit that, but looking to the most popular sport in the world immediately proves you wrong lol
@@ziggle5000 I'm referring to the abuse they receive from the players and managers. NOT the fans. No other sport allows it's participants to abuse the officials the way baseball does. And that is STILL going on today.
@@tchevrier I’m a soccer ref and if you are dismissed (ejected), it’s universal from youth to professional to the World Cup that you will be suspended from your team’s next game (at least). And in the vast majority of leagues staying on the field to “get your money’s worth” after being told to leave results in at least 2 games of suspension. Get ejected, miss the rest of this game and the next one would massively cut down on the disrespect.
@@tchevrier this simply isn't true either. There's literally a rule in baseball where as soon as a manager begins to argue balls or strikes its an automatic ejection that gets enforced all the time. If you've watched a single quarter of the NBA you'll see more complaining about calls than you'll see in a whole game of baseball.
In fact, umpires in modern baseball are notoriously quick to throw out players over almost nothing. Madison Bumgarner got tossed at the start of the game this year for seemingly nothing, feel free to look that one up and let me know how much abuse the ump endured before madbum earned him his ejection.
@@kenconnelly773 Exactly.
I did the murder in Chicago
I know of someone born on August 21st…..
He’s a disaster…..
So when do we bring this back?
Isn't it pronounced "Nickle" and not "Nicole"?
I can barely hear the words spoken with the over-done loud music. Not sure if its haunted house music or some trippy yoga spa
