I love to witness other's first Tool experiences. You seemed to grasp this song very well. Maynard is an amazing singer and lyricist. He gives you enough to paint these elaborate detailed pictures in your mind but leaves you enough room to assume a few details of your own. As for the drums you liked so much, Danny helped in the development of these octagonal drum synth pads that are just loaded with sensors that he can assign different sounds to each side or corner. He can even assign a specific sound to occur if he slides or swipes across them. Danny is one of the most fluid and ambidextrous drummers to every reach his level of success. He's a total jazz drummer at heart but his poly-rythems mind blowing. Check out his drum cam video of the song Pnuma. Its on the Vic Furth youtube channel. It will leave you astounded.

We are glad you discovered them - they are not easy, nor traditional, but they will evoke a response in you if you are open to feeling and thinking simultaneously. Don’t get too stuck on interpreting lyrics as IMHO the lyrics are merely an additional instrument to make you feel a sort of thing….
This is art. It is a conscious effort to evoke the spiritual within each of us. Because once you discover that reaction within yourself you will not stop searching to be a more fully realized version of yourself.

So many other Tool songs I would have chosen first if you're just now hearing Tool but at least this is a great live version. I know I might face scathing criticism by some avid fans for not liking their first 2 albums nearly as much as the ones that followed those, but I can't find any other band I would recommend more highly than Tool. I hope you will give them a chance and try more of their songs, I confess I mostly prefer the studio albums because they do some crazy polyrhythms and their instrument mixing is just such a deeper experience via the studio versions and a good pair of headphones. This band is my fave prog band and in top 3 fave bands EVER and I'm 60 now and have been a fan since the 90s. But for a deeper dive down the rabbit hole I would beg you to react to The Pot (which has a more basic 4 count but man is it a banger, in the top 5 of my fave Tool songs), The Grudge, 46&2, Sober, Lateralus, Right in Two, Vicarious, Pneuma, and my very fave Tool song, Descending. And that's just for starters. Tool indeed induces a deeply meditative state in many, myself included. Many of their songs have some very deep lyrics, believe me. The drummer Danny Carey is a monster, someday you need to check the live cam version of him drumming to their song Pneuma off their 2019 Fear Inoculum album. Maynard's voice can be so haunting and pure then just angry and nasty good, and he has some killer screams as well in some of their songs. Maynard also fronts 2 other great bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. Each band is like a different facet of his personality and unique in their own fashion.

This is the live performance released on Tool's "Salival" (2000), a collection of B-sides, covers, and live recordings. The original, studio recording of "Push It" is on the "Aenima" (1996) album. Tool will force you to listen differently. Most music is produced to put the vocals and (maybe) a lead guitar forward; Tool must be consumed as a whole, truly the sum of its parts. It';s what Tool does better than any other band. There are bands with better individual musicians. There are bands that are far more prolific. There are bands that are more popular and famous. But they ain't Tool. A band that comes once in a generation or so.

I love that you mentioned Maynard "intentionally singing off-key." I'd loved Tool for two decades already by the time I heard this track, and I had a moment of "wow, has Maynard lost his live-game?" since he's usually exquisitely on-point. It wasn't until he hits the really gutteral "pushing and I'm shoving" at 11:19 (in your video) where he tightens it up and intensifies everything that it came together for me, that his more reedy, off-key presentation is the voice of the hurt, vulnerable and confused character singing the song who is lost until the rage pulls him together for these brief moments of clarity through anger. Beautiful artistic choice that makes the track for me.

Do the live version of Pneuma next. Since you like drummers, Danny Carey is your man. Trust me.

The original is darker and deeper within the gap, with some insights to what caused it. I believe the song is about patterns of self abuse from a wounded inner child. The live version is more of a relapse or a step back dark state of mind.

You have opened the door into a different realm of music there.... Seriously mind bending... however if you really want to explore some more out there sounds I would highly recommend Frank Zappa , a good track to start with would be Beat it with your Fist 👍

@mmbxmob its an electric drumpad. All the percussion sounds are electric pads on the drummers kit. This is a very tame tool song. This is not the original version its way soft. Idk if you will like this band but his lyrics and this bands music are off this world.

Oh, wow. You start Tool with Salival's Pushit? You're jumping in pretty deep. Most people start with The Pot, or Schism.
So, first thing, Tool is best listened to with headphones. Especially the studio stuff. There are a lot of dynamics that you miss otherwise.
I think the "not quite asleep" term you're reaching for is "hypnogogic." I've heard Tool referred to as trance metal, or chill metal. But hypnogogic music is probably a better term.
You might like Right in Two, Schism, Forty Six and 2, H, and Descending. Maybe more once you get in deep :)

Also, yeah, that was a bass. Justin has a very guitar-like tone at times. Tool's musicians kinda trade off who's driving the song, or the song parts. Including the drums. That's a lot of what I like about the band: there's no one more important than the ithers.
I'm not exactly what type of traditional drum that was. Danny has studied a lot of traditional drums for m different cultures. He records himself playing them, and then uses electronic drum pads on his kit to trigger the drum sounds during performances.

Took songs are purposefully vague and open to interpretation or have multiple interpretations. For me, this is about toxic and abusive relationships and how difficult it can be to escape one (especially for the victim) but how on a deeper level your body knows you need to escape despite the apparent love and the good moments

    • @Iamthenoi

And for me, “the gap” is the opportunity to escape, to get out. That the POV of the singer keeps seeing it and keeps missing it and is worried what could happen if they don’t as there’s no (real) love in fear and it might escalate to where one party kills the other (“it will end no other way”). And even in the sweet moments (“I’m in love when you hold me”) are underpinned by the toxicity and violence there in the relationship, as the line ends (“…in love when you hold me…. Down”)

The drum is a Tabla. Predominately used in Indian music. Check out some Indian tabla masters. They're amazing.

Wow, you chose one of their most intense songs as your first go. This song is a lot even for a seasoned listener.
Listen to Schism next. I think it will compliment your experience of this song.
Get headphones when you listen to Tool. This particular video seems to have some weird reverb.
The drum is an Indian drum called a 'tabla'. There was a whole thing about Danny Carey studying Indian polyrhythms and such. Amazing drummer.
EDIT: The word you're looking for at 8:30 is "reverie" the state between waking and sleeping.

Its about a toxic relationship. His son Devo's mother around the time. Not everything Maynard writes about is an intellectual dive into the inner spiritual journey. Some yes , however some topics are humorous and surface level
