- The 1991 Ford Ranger is getting a rear 4 link suspension build and King Coilover shocks! We are removing the leaf springs and building a custom rear 4 link with King coilover shocks for rock crawling. We used different brackets from Ballistic Fabrication, Barnes 4wd and Artec. The joints are all Ballistic fab joints.

As a fabricator of many years and doing a lot of chassis work I must say guys you guys did a really awesome job with this project I really like it it's very motivating and downright awesome!! Keep the great videos coming you guys two thumbs up here out of Houston Texas!
Also noted if you guys need any performance parts for anyting Gears tuning heads cam whatever get with me and I'll work you a hell of a good deal on stuff. I'm a dealer for over 75 different vendors. Once again keep up the amazing work!
Daniel's Speed and Performance thank you very much! We appreciate the compliments and we are glad you like it. We will definitely let you know if we need any parts!
Daniel's Speed and Performance cool thanks for the reply. Nice rigs you got there.
Daniel's Speed and Performance have you upgraded the brakes and rotors?
good
Quite frustrating how you make a 4 link build done in a driveway look so simple and easy. Makes me want to go out and just start cutting. Nice videos. Subbed.
vica153 you should just go out and start cutting! Yes there is a little bit of math and planning involved, but a lot of people seem to over complicate things and then never get anything accomplished. Just remember, almost anything can be cut off, and almost anything can be welded back on, or rebuilt. If you do a 4 link and don’t like it, cut it off and adjust it
Ever seen that Simpsons episode where Homer builds a BBQ?
These guys look like it was completed on the whiteboard before the first cut was made. No measuring and configuring on the fly for clearances of unexpected obstacles and stuff. A good starting base like a straight chassis and dive way with a very flat concrete slab would help
The whole process in the video was ‘on the fly’. It helps when it’s still sitting on the old suspension and you’re not changing the ride height at all. The Stuburban took a little more effort, but following the same principles helps. Set ride height and axle position, then put some tubes in place to see how it looks and run numbers.
also a fabricator of many years, and not a fan of monster truck builds, , but am impressed with the dive and roll resistance the under chassis cam showed, good engineering. Well done lads.
I would really recommend tieing the top of the truss into the top of the diff. It will twist and try and rip off of the diff. Subscribed and looking forward to more content, really good video format, editing, and content.
That's freakin awesome. Thanks for the upload
subscribed because of your amazing quality of content and also the badass ranger. my first vehicle was a ranger 4x4 that i beat the hell out of offroad so they always hold a special place in my heart.
Nice job... Impressed how easy you made that look.
Thank you!
With the old suspension still in place, it makes the job a lot easier.
If you start out with a blank slate, it’s a tad bit more work.
Your guys awesome, simple fabrication but function!!!
Spring rate video please!!! Love y’all’s content please keep it up!!
Drain plugs are definitely nice, I added one to my dana 28 when I still had it.
Ridiculously awesome
I figured !!! I just saw it moving. I broke mine . Great stuff
Your best video yet. Keep it up.
Came here for a prerunner build video. Stayed here for the awesome crawler build video.
love the build, i am closely following because im trying to figure out how to put a radius arm )then maybe link in the rear) of my SAS'd silverado... ive also wanted to do a Ranger/ Toyota build aswell so this is great!!
Pretty good video haven't found a good one like this
Awesome. That job is definitely not that easy but don’t know why after watching this I just wanna hit my truck right now and start that thing 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Thanks mate, I’m sure I’ll learn so much from you......
new subscriber...... 🙋♂️😀
Super cool build, awesome to see all the details. Building an explorer myself (not like this though haha) so it's awesome to see a detailed build on a very similar vehicle.
Nice, I run 4-link in the rear of my liberty, love it.
Dope driveway build. Locked up rear tires for 5 seconds on the road haha
Looks like you guys have a neat series going on here. should have more views imo. Keep it up!
Really love the quality of work. First vid and I’m subbed
Thank you!!
Awesome videos, glad I found this channel. Keep them coming.
My friend, you did a great job! now it would take an anti-rock bar 👍🏻
A sway bar is on the list!
that video was amazing. thank you
Good job on video & build.
Waiting to see more videos.
We have a lot of videos on our channel
I have a ranger as well yours sounds amazing
quality build video! really enjoying your channel!
Auto Existence thank you!
Yeah.....ridiculously awesome
Wow i don't see like this in youtube good job
love the bottle opener at 8:46
Super cool video guys. Subbed
Cool video
Wow makes me still wish I had my Bronoco 2
Ahhh the sweet sound of sizzling bacon. 🥓 🥓
Cool under car cam!
Great video
Sweet lift!!!
Cool!!
This thing is badass
I would for sure build around that t case some support. Badass video . And truck
Pisce Ponix there is one, it wasn’t installed yet for the first quick test run
Хорошо сделали!!!
Yes! Spring rates!!
Ranger danger!!
Awesome
love the video I just thought I might let you know UV light from welding isn't blocked by mere eyelids. Always use a mask, welder's eye is very serious and easy to get.
I would like a vid on spring rates! Need to 4-link my Jeep.
Shane Affsa yeah I wanna 4 link my Wrangler yj
awesome .
thanks
It’s cool to see young guys doing mods
are cars/trucks. It’s kind of getting rare with millennials
Genius.
Muy bien
Gracias por compartir
Saludos
now kids the hardest thing in a 4 link or prerunner project is handing over the dollars for the suspension
I would have liked to see more of a shock hoop in the rear but I'm sure it will hold as light as that truck is!
matthew wasley a gusset was added to the top of the tab that was not shown in the video
Looks good! Ferd power!
Unless your working on the Short bus, then Chevy power!
Maybe you guy's could find a donor truck to do a DIY on long travel leaf spring's? With upgraded Shocks?? Great video's.
We don’t currently have plans to build another Offroad setup any time soon; however, if we do, we’ll be sure to take this into consideration. 👍
Ram Wall they’re like regular leaf springs, but they allow more travel. You’re a special individual.
Nice
I’ve been wanting to do something like this to my ranger. Do you get lots of flex, how much of a lift did it give you, and what size coil overs are those?
Thanks for posting I enjoy these type of projects but you might get some limit straps to keep those shock together.
Watch the end of the video 🤷🏼♂️
@@RecklessWrenchGarage I see it now just in front of the bump stop, nice work Im playing with the idea with 4 linking my 96 tacoma the leafs are deavers with a 3inch lift, it really beats me up, and videos like this give me confidence.
I had the same feeling with leaf springs, coilovers and air bumps feel glorious
Very cool youtube page
I want to do this to my 2wd Ranger
great job have fun where do i get 4link calculator thanks
Bought a 68 c10 with a 4 link set up. But more for drag racing. Trying to run it on the st as a daily driver though. Does that sound crazy? Is it a rough ride?
Muito bom parabéns
Beautiful build.
What's your thought on the handling on road?
Also, what about the handling on dirt roads such as forest service roads?
I'm about the pull the trigger on a 4-link for my XJ. But I'm worried it won't perform well as a hybrid rock crawler, overlanding, and daily driver rig. Any input is appreciated!
I haven’t had many miles to test it yet, but the handling on road with a custom built sway bar is nice.
One thing to keep in mind with coilovers, if you plan to load the vehicle up with lots of gear, you have to plan for that accordingly.
I want to know how to calculate spring rate. 👍🏻
Awesome video! Do you have a trac bar? I didn’t notice one, isn’t one needed? Trying to figure out the 4 link rear for my truck!
Since the links are triangulated, no trac is required
I was going to say it's sitting a little high in the ass in about 2 in to 3 in but it's a nice set-up man I like it a lot keep it up man
I have changed the spring rates and it sits about 3” lower now
Awesome job man! What disc brakes are you running on the 9” rear?
They are Chevy calipers and some 5x5.5 rotors I had machined locally
So I’ve got a 2020 Ford Ranger 4x4/FX4 and I want to be able to drive 30-40 mph down bumpy dirt roads rocks etc and have a smooth ride doing so.
What stuff is out there that I can have installed to do that?
👍🏽
2:50 Man i hope he gets this weld done quick without burning my ass
quick question. with this type of 4 link set up, do you get any lateral movement from the rear axle? i am new to all this
The triangulation of the links prevent the axle from moving side to side. If all of the links were parallel a pan hard bar would be needed to prevent lateral axle movement
Real nice! You guys make the build look super easy. How do you guys figure out what size coilover/spring to get a certain lift? 3.5 inch lift. Trying to get this setup on a 72 blazer. Thanks
Check out Crawlpedia. You will find a wealth of information related to your question on there.
You’ll have to figure out the vehicle’s sprung weight and unsprung weight, desired travel and ride height, and it will vary depending on single/dual rate setup.
@@RecklessWrenchGarage
Thank you for your response. Keep up the good work and videos
Are you using the factory lower shock mounts
im gonna do this to my 94 k2500 suburban with a 7.4 454
Never mind, say the video on the brakes😉
Great job, n great job not boring me with useless crap. I hate videos that go on for 25 minutes that could be summed up in much less.
Thank you! We try to keep it to the meat and potatoes
👍
In the turns heels like a cruiser Aurora, you need a stabilizer.
I’m not really sure what you mean, but, there is a sway bar on the rear.
Suspension Stabilizer Bar, Anti-roll bar www.spohn.net/productimages/1022/Camaro-Rear-Anti-Roll-Bar-F-Body-Rear-Anti-Roll-Bar-921-1.jpg
Same thing. It has one on the rear.
2:35 holy shit I never seen a shock absorber like that
you never seen a lifted sema truck before? pretty much the samething
I've watched this about 3x lol , I like it so much . I have a 77 Cj5 it's all the way to chassis now . Instead of springs, I want mine to have drive character like your's, Man it look's fun as hell to drive . Can't wait , hoping to have it done by Fall . I'm gonna run 35s , I still want my Jeep to retain classic look . If I get the right dampener only let it goe so far . Really just need to research wieghts , cog lines , I bet a line laser is worth it on these job's . Still I believe it will come down to coilovers or air . Killer Truck dude's I bet it was a fun one . Is it still around ?
Thanks for watching man! Yeah the ranger is still around and has continued to be upgraded. If you go through our channel we have a lot more videos of it and a lot of action off-road.
What program did you have on the laptop to run your numbers through to calculate everything? I can do all the work for this but idk how to get the suspension geometry right
If you search "triaged 4 link calculator" you will find it, it's 100% free
Its crazy how unfased the rest of the truck is compared to leaf springs
good afternoon, that configuration works in a jeep cherokee xj and it does not wobble on the road, can it be used on the road without problems?
Felicidades x la transformación pero creo q le faltó la barra estabilizadora en diagonal
4:36 Hello good day. I am looking for those rollbacks, where have you gotten? funny
Hi guys I’m really impressed with what you have done on you ranger ! I have a Ford F150 and I have been hit in the side rear axle and it killed my truck so I have decided to change the rear leaf springs to a set up like yours ! I have a skyjacker front 6” lift which I will keep for now as I mostly drive on the highway but now my truck has been smashed I want to do what you have done but it must be road legel so I don’t need so much travel in the backend. I would really appreciate the help on what coilovers to use and what size would be best. I hope to hear back from you . Kind regards Matt..
If you aren't going crazy with the off-road performance 12 inch travel coilovers will probably work nicely. A 2.5 coilover would probably be good 🤘🏻
Thanks guys I love your work I just hope I can weld as good as you boys !
Just practice as much as you can on some scrap before you burn in anything on the truck! Rack everything together and make sure it works then go for it!
Will do ! don’t be scared in other words just do it 👍you are a great help and confidence booster thanks again guys
very good video + 1 sub :)
Did you ever do a video on find springs and different rates for weight?
We haven’t gone into detail on it yet. We wanted to wait until we had plenty of opportunity to mess with ours.
Just earned yourself a subscriber! Sexy ass build guys!
Thank you!
Looks like you need to bias to your front brakes more. You can do that with a valve or separate the front and back with two master brake cylinders.
Are you 4 link bars the same lenght
How did the joints hold up to welding the brackets with the joints in place?
They held up perfectly. The heat wasn’t enough to effect the races inside the joint.
Would consider gusset if the coil over mounts. That’s a lot of stress on one tube.
manddy05554 it wasn’t shown in this video, but a gusset was added to the top of the upper coilover tab.
Nice setup, but your truck looks kinda weird being half cage and half cab
Antonio Rios but it is functional right?
Your half a man you don't see me complaining
Welp. I was just looking for a simple little build someone had and then clicken this. I just saw a big ass truck in the air lmao
I have watched a lot of videos regarding ur 4links. Finally i made front 4 link. Now i wanna make rear 4 link . My truck is long bed. My lower link would be long. For reference could i get approximate length and diameter of your lower link?
On this setup the lower thinks are 40 inches long and 2 inch diameter .25 wall tube
So build the links at ride height and then build shock mounts at full bump?
Yeah that's how this setup was done. Put the suspension to full bump to make sure you get it setup to utilize the full shock travel
nice shocks, what do you use to edit your videos ?
We use adobe premiere pro
Gotta ask why you didn't weld the top brackets right on the pumpkin top? Seems like it would have been easier. I could understand if it was a cast center but that's a welded rear.
Because you need a certain amount of separation between upper and lower links to have effective 4 link geometry. I needed the upper links taller than the housing
@@RecklessWrenchGarage correct......but the more effective means of getting the separation would have been to mount the lower link tabs straight down instead of pointing forward. then you could have eliminated that big ol' weak bracket on top, mounted the uppper link tabs right to the housing, and also gained much better leverage and weight transfer.
Yes, dropping the lower mounts would also increase the separation. This would also decrease my ground clearance, and make two large areas to get hung up on rocks. This a rock crawler/off-road machine. Reducing ground clearance is not an option. The truss is not weak, it is a tried and proven design.
spring rate video please! and thank you!
