This is a great list that showcases the quality of games that PHG puts out. It reminded me why I usually look at any release they put out. So many of these games are still in my library after playing multiple times.

Surprised Tom didn't mention that City of Remnants was re-designed and re-themed as Neon Gods. I'm not sure how much the mechanics were changed, but it's very different looking.

This might be a common answer, but Dead of Winter is mine. It captures in board game form the exact types of things I love about zombie survival video games, and every single time I've played it, it *always* ends up feeling like it could go either way up til the very end. That, to me, is perfect balance for a semi-cooperative game, and the plentiful flavor of the Crossroads cards adds welcome variety and an opportunity for some friendly role-playing. 10/10 game for me even years later, and I'll always be willing to pull it off the shelf the moment anyone so much as hints that they want to play it with me. :)

I played version 2, and I have all expansions… seems like MTG light but on a grid. I’m having trouble seeing what is so awesome about it… seems just ok to me. There’s not even any defense or defensive rolls or anything like that, and I wish there was. Can anyone enlighten me?

      @@CharlesHepburn2
      No defensive rolls??
Deceivers and Colleen would like to know your location! 😂
The game is strategically and tactically very deep, and every faction plays extremely differently. The dice add an element of uncertainty and therefore must be factored into all tactics as well. (e.g. ranged vs melee is big)
Unlike chess there are no guaranteed captures so a plan B is always worth-while; however, going yolo in a desperate attempt at victory can also succeed - which allows for some beautiful comebacks.
Furthermore, unlike chess, there is never any chance of a stalement or draw - ever.
The rules are clean and simple - yet the wealth of options each unit, event and summoner provides leads to some truly stunning and innovative moves - not to mention thematically delightful.
Add to this the gorgeous artwork, unique dice, rapid setup & play time - and you have the best 2 player tactical war game out there IMHO.

@@barnabyalsop5601 well, obviously I don’t get it…. I believe you and I think I’m missing something…. That’s why I’m going to continue to play it. I’ve played like 4 or 5 games trying to see the magical bliss everyone is raving about. In my experience, it’s hard to understand exactly what each faction’s theme is until you are like 2/3rd’s through the game already… and then I sometimes don’t even know what they are about. Seems to me that you summon some dudes on to the board that have these intricate powers that are supposed to make some elegant combos with each other, but then in 1 or 2 turns they are basically dead and off the board with simple attacks from the other side and no armor or defensive rolls to fight back against attacks. Like I can summon a champion for a bunch of mana and then I get to use him like once (or sometimes not at all) and then my opponent can just attack my champion with melee and ranged attacks and he’s dead without me being able to defend myself in any way… he’s just a sitting duck. Plus, the mana is VERY tight in the game which I feel is a choke point and makes things less fun. Again, it’s probably me not understanding something… or maybe I need to “get good, bro”. Artwork is good but doesn’t blow me away. I just haven’t seen the wow yet, and wonder what everyone is so hyped about. Seems like a watered down magic the gathering on a grid with no way to defend yourself on the other person’s turn and extremely tight mana, making it kinda a drag to play. If I had a bit more mana I could maybe do something with the cards in my hand… you should at least be given 1 mana at the start of your turn, at least… I would make it 5 mana. Plus, awesome cards with crazy powers don’t really excited me because they get killed like defenseless lambs in 1 or 2 turns anyways. I’ve emptied out my whole deck and had no cards to play and I still don’t see what that faction is about. Maybe if each faction came with a little overview or strategy card to let you know up front how to play them correctly…. Instead you have to figure it out while playing. I don’t know… I’ve been underwhelmed with it. I’ll keep trying though…. It’s got to be good, right? Everyone says it is. [shakes head]

@@CharlesHepburn2 hows it been since ur intial comment?, positioning is hudge in summoner wars and is the difference between ur units dieing one one turn and being able to get good use of their stats and abilities... i feel if you are still struggling with keeping champion units alive its definetly a placement issue or using them at wrong times, not letting enemys get yo ur side means they caN usually only get one attack on one of yours each turn which will increase the life of units... also if u are having problem with gaining magic just remember u can discard cards at the end of ur turn for an increase in magic which although can force u to play quicker, if u have an agressive board presence because of the increased magic u get... can allow u to take an early win! :)

I would love to see a proper second edition for City of Remnants. Streamline it a bit, I think it's a game that has a lot of really cool things going on but it's possibly a little too much. I still like it a lot but it's hard to find a group that fully digs it.

I always feel like Crystal Clans got a bit of a bad break due to it coming out right when PHG was bought. It just felt like the game was quickly dumped out without any hype or fan fair and ultimately very few people bought/supported it. Highly underrated and under appreciated as a result. I’m always surprised though by how people have cooled on Dead of Winter. That is still one of my favourite games of all time but I think people have sort of moved past the “experience” or the game and started to focus more on how to maximize wins and that makes it less fun for them. The game is all about the experience IMHO and if you care more about playing to win than playing to have the best possible experience win or lose, you are going to lose sight of what really made Dead of Winter so incredible at the start. It’s kind of missing the Forrest for the trees so to speak.

I really enjoyed it but ultimately sold it because it was just way too long and the “short variant” rules that eventually came out were a bit too clunky and fiddly for me. If they could streamline the concept and make it 90 minutes max (instead of like 3-4 hours I kept running into and we aren’t AP gamers), it would be so incredible a game. But it mostly fell flat with people I played with because there was both too much going on and yet not enough “meat” to justify how long the game took to play.
