Dead Reckoning is by far my favourite AEG game! 🏴☠️
Yeah, I ended up really digging Dead Reckoning. I think my favorites are this and Space Base. I haven't played War Chest yet, but I have a feeling I would love it... I understand it shares a lot of DNA with Undaunted, and I love that game. David Thompson has quickly become one of my favorite designers.
Absolutely! I wonder what went wrong with their play of it. It's such a great game.
Can’t agree with this more. Dead Reckoning is the best AEG game that many people haven’t gotten to play yet, but better than everything else on Tom’s list. Accessible, fun, deep, and innovative.
When I played Mystic Vale I thought the card crafting was really cool, but I wanted to DO something with the cards beyond just victory points. Edge of Darkness did that, but Dead Reckoning really nailed it.
@@markarucan8990 I like Dead Reckoning but the length takes it out of the top for me.
I think Dead Reckoning really perfects the card-crafting concept and drops it into an exciting pirate-y sandbox.
Even though I realize these videos are a year old, I just found them and are really enjoying them! Besides your top 10, I like your discussion of the various publishers, including the “growing pains”. Personally, Cascadia would be leaps and bounds #1 for me, although I enjoy several of the games (like The Adventurers - The Temple of Chac - what a blast, we still pull that out every so often!). Thanks Tom!
Thanks for including my game (Valley of the Kings) on your top 10 list!
Tom Cleaver
Current favorite AEG: Automobiles. Quick bag-building race game. Available on BGA.
I love when I roll an 8 on one of my dice in Space Base! It's such a versatile number. And double 8s, forget about it!! 🎲🎲
Lots of love for Edge Of Darkness. Trains is also a pretty solid Dominion clone that's easier for players to jump into thanks to the game board.
Edge of Darkness is one of my ALL TIME favorites. Top 5... = )
Santa Monica is a top 5 all-time game for husband and I. Calico and then Point Salad would round out my top 3 for AEG. We just got Space Base but haven’t played yet.
I’ve been waiting for this list cuz I probably own more AEG games than anything. My top 10 would be:
10. Whirling Witchcraft
9. TEN
8. Cat Lady
7. War Chest
6. Point Salad
5. Cascadia
4. Sheepy Time
3. The Guild of the Merchant Explorers
2. Santa Monica
1. Space Base
That's a great list!
My favorite AEG games are.
1. Ecos the first continent
2. Cascadia
3. Tiny towns
4. Space base
5. Istanbul
6. Cubitos
7. Trains
8. Cat lover
That’s only games I’ve played from this publisher. I do own mariposas, but haven’t played it yet.
I also plan to play point salad and probably calico and hopefully wormholes before I make my own official list video.
I love Nightfall. Great deck builder!
Great video - thank you!
I came over to hobby gaming in 2010 after mainly playing RPGs for a few years and Thunderstone was the first game that I fell in love with. I'm still a HUGE fan of deck-builders and Thunderstone Quest is easily in my Top 10 favorite games overall. Also, Greedy Kingdoms is a sleeper-favorite of mine from AEG; my favorite of their old "Big in Japan" line.
I love Space Base too! As well as many others on this list like Thunderstone Quest, Mystic Vale, and Valley of the Kings. Also much love for Automobiles! Great company that I pay attention to whenever they announce something new.
The AEG games I own, thus are my favorite: Guildhall, Oath of the Brotherhood, Love Letter Batman and Space Base.
So many great choices! AEG is very solid. I’ll add in there Ecos: First Continent (another John D Clair), Meeples & Monsters, Automobiles, and Istanbul the Dice Game.
Great List! I love them all, except Ready, Set, Bet, I haven't played it yet. I really like Dead Reckoning as well, (And John D. Clair). My favorite one is Thunderstone advanced (I own everything for all 3 edition of Thunderstone), but there are other titles I will dig deeper into soon. Like Edge of Darkness. Just played Cascadia lately and it was a very nice discovery, with excellent production.
We also just started the latest adventure for Space Base. Great dice rolling fun!
Keep up the good work!
Automobiles, and I really liked Wormholes. Ready, Set, Bet would probably be number 1 right now.
Love War Chest! Just got it about a month ago and played 2 team games with both expansions since it's very easy to teach/learn and the expansions additional stuff was pretty seamless to add.
I do enjoy Space Base a lot, but that new expansion doesn't thrill me while Shy Pluto did. Haven't played in a bit, and used to take it almost every week to the meetup. Maybe it'll play better than it appears but the new expansion seems to add stuff that bogs the game down (I looked ahead just to make sure all the components are there, even if we haven't played it yet), while one of the base game's (and even with Shy Pluto added) appeal is how fast it plays and how easy it is for new folks to pick it up.
I was waiting for Tom mention Warlord CCG as he used to have it in his Top 100. Still one of the best CCGs of all time and still hoping AEG brings it back as an LCG.
Great list! I think my favorite (if it counts because it was also Flat Out Games) is Calico! Just an incredible little drafting tile placement game.
If it doesn’t count, I think my favorite is Cubitos then :)
For me Trains has a special spot on my top AEG games. And I am pretty sure it would be the 1st. I love that game
A game that is in desperate need of a reprint. Such an amazing game, but damn are the components bland. I think that's why a lot of people slept on it.
@@squidrecluse2336 Maybe. I don't mind them at all, but I see your point. I remember to see someone one time commenting they use the Ticket to Ride trains to play Trains. I found that idea super amusing
Edge of Darkness and Ecos: First Continent would get top marks from me on this list.
Istanbul, man! 🦃Come on... oh, wait. I'm not even sure if you even like that game. But it's a *great* game! And Cascadia of course!
Nice video, like always, Tom.🌲
I absolutely loved edge of darkness!!
# 11 - Points to AEG for putting small circular cutouts on their boxes to make their game boxes easier to open. Not technically a specific game, but it makes opening AEG games easier.
Wr also love space base. Point Salad IA a great family game
Seeing as no one else has mentioned it so far, I'll be the one to say Unicornus Knights is high on my list of AEG games. I understand that it's a bit too anime for everyone's taste, but the concept of having a fully co-operative wargame with narrative elements is fairly unique. It's a shame that it never got an expansion.
I absolutely love the fate cards! There are times when you feel like you are facing certain doom only to find out that the enemy is actually your long lost relative and wants to join your side.
There is so much about his game that is unique, and to this day it is one of my go-to-convention-games!
The Captain is Dead and Cascadia are ones that pop to mind for me...
No Cubitos?! You LOVED that one Tom
I LIKED it. There are some problems with it that keep it out of my top 10.
Anyone else got some love for UNICORNUS KNIGHTS?
Istanbul is my number 1 but I'm finding a ton I like from them
You should do a top 10 pandasaurus games next!!
Love this series, absolutely HATE the opening music which always blasts super loud.
Idk how Cascadia isn't on this list. And I knew it wouldn't be, but I really like Meeples and Monsters
Great list for my favorite publisher.
Surprised about the absence of Cat Lady, Dead Reckoning, Calico or Santa Monica. Of course I haven't played a few mentioned on this list
Mystic Vale holds an easy top spot in my heart.
Oh my god how amazing would it be if you could roll a 2 and an 8 in Space Base 🤣 d8? D10?
I love Love Letter, at one point I owned 6 versions! I've since cut down to a more manageable 2 but I always love playing it
Every game mentioned that I played either fell completely flat or outright hated.
The only game they sell that anyone's loved was Unicornus Knights.
I particularly hate Tiny Towns. I talked people into trying it with me and almost instantly regretted it. Ouch.
I do not own any of these. Space Base is on my Amazon wishlist though. I own and love Cascadia and since it was number one game played at their last convention I was surprised it was not mentioned. I also wanted to mention Tom this by far was my favorite hat and shirt combo that I have seen you wear. Absolutely a winner.
I don’t think you can roll a “2 and 8” in Space Base… 🙂
Space Base is also my #1. AEG makes a lot of great games. I also have Dead Reckoning, Tiny Towns and Point Salad. Ready Set Bet is still on preorder.
8:00 rolling a 2 and an 8 in space base? XD
Cascadia and calico, though cascadia more so I eould have to say. I have thunderstone quest but have not tried it yet. So big a bit intimidating. Thank you for all the great videos.
I loooooooove Smash Up, and eas super glad to see it on this list. I own everything up until marvel and Disney which I refuse to get because they changed a lot of the terminology and stuff in those sets which makes gameplay really janky (At least with previous sets)
Cubitos?
How is Cascadia not on this list? I would also add Cubitos and Calico to my personal list.
Space Base is a really good game for sure. It has that same feel that you get from Terraforming Mars, as in you are building your engine and tinker around with that and it doesn't bother you (or at least me) much who actually wins the game. It is just so fun to play. Though after probably about 50ish games of TM, it is starting to get a little old. Have probably played around 20 games of Space Base and with a couple of expansions, the game seems quite fresh with the card variety in the games. So it still feels quite fresh and there are new things to try out.
#1 Istanbul
#2 Tiny Towns
#3 Space Base
7-10 are debatable…
I’ll give Tom a pass if he is considering istanbul a pegasus spiel game
Probably since all the items in his list are games that AEG developed and was the original publisher for.
I was wondering how Istanbul missed the list 😂
Custom Heroes.
So much fun.
It's such a shame what happened to this company. Once upon a time they had a great miniatures game, a great card game, and a great role-playing game all based in the same world. I miss those days
It won't shock anyone who knows me when I say, I really miss Legend of the Five Rings.
Best publisher out there. Dead Reckoning is my #1 and then Space Base.
ready set bet looks really interesting.
@DiceTower do you guys have a list of best Dinosaur themed games? or post-apocalyptic games?
In no particular order for me (and it is a John D Clair fest)
Dead Reckoning
Mystic Vale
Cubitos
Point Salad
Istanbul the Dice Game
Of three that I've played, I would rank them as follows: 1) Love Letter 2) Smash Up 3) Tiny Towns
I miss AEG's RPGs... I know that L5R and 7th Sea are now with other publishers but I like the old roll and keep system.
Tom where’s Dead Reckoning!?
Still enjoying and playtesting for Smash Up. Sorry, no spoilers for what's coming up.
The guild of merchant explorers is amazing
Point Salad was my biggest disappointment. I bought it because everyone said that it is a quick and fun game. Unfortunately, it is not that quick as a setup takes a lot of time for such a small game if you are not playing with 6 players. You have to spend a lot of time taking out veggie cards when playing with less than 5 people and you want to do it for each play so that you won't play with the same cards again and again.
I would like Point Salad better if it would have cards for 3+, 4+ etc. player counts so that we do not have to sort cards before each play.
I am with you part way, but Edge of Darkness and Dead Reckoning are better than some of this list. To each their own, at least TSQ got some love.
I only own 3 AEG games one being Cubitos which I'm surprised didn't make the list
What?! No Dominare? Easily the best of the Tempest series of games!
Guildhall is definitely my #1
I quite like "TEN" from AEG
I was really expecting 'TRAINS' to be on this list
The Captain is Dead is probably my favorite AEG game
Fruit Salad should be the 3rd in the series.
Thunderstone Quest is so good
Santa Mónica!
Did not like Thunderstone Quest at all. Space Base is one of my all time favourites! Cubitos is in the mail. Worried it is not on the list....
Was this list only for retail AEG games ?
Istanbul is my favorite from AEG.
My favorite is The Captain is Dead
Love Letter is your #11? Blasphemy!
Interesting. I played space base once at a convention and found it dreadfully boring. I hear it recommended so often, so obviously it has its fans. But I would be hard pressed to ever play it again. Also tried Smash Up on the app and didn’t like that either. But never tried in real life.
Absolute crime Dead reckoning was not on the list. It killed Mystic Vale. In other reviews they love the wormhole mechanism of Wormholes, but find the game around it not great. Mystic Vale has the card crafting mechanism, but a weak game around it. Dead reckoning brings card crafting into a fabulous game.
CAAASCADIAAA
Love letter
and Santa Monica
Mariposas...
1) War Chest
2) Space Base
3) Point Salad
4) Cubitos
5) mystic Vale
6) Thunderstone Quest
7) dead Reckoning
8) Guild of Merchant Explorers
9) love Letter
10) Smash up
Love Letter #11 vs. Space Base #1?!?! Should have flipped spots IMO.
Space Base is vastly overrated. I don’t get the love. I’d rather play Catan by a mile.
Top 10 without Dead Reckoning or Edge of Darkness..fail. Edge of Darkness is far superior to Mystic Vale
Space Base is just really bad Machi Koro. Worst game on the list.
I think Machi Koro is much worse, what do you prefer about it?
I enjoyed Space Base the first dozen times I played but soon after it lost its glamour and became very pedantic. Probably won’t ever play again…
Agree to disagree. Space Base is fantastic.
I can understand disliking Space Base as the genre can be quite random, but what I would like to understand is how someone would prefer Machi Koro.
Smash up is one of the worst board games I've ever played
I would add. Calico, Guild of Merchant Explorers, and Cascadia. Space Base and Point Salad are my favorites though.
