The sad thing is that in capitalism the exploitation of the system by exploitation of the people is turned a blind eye to.
As a result we live in a world full of environmental exploitation, horrible divides in wealth and resources, democracy destroying lobbying, nepotism and corruption, country destroying imperialism and war and a general indifference to the well being of billions of people that live well below the poverty line.

According to the Australian Consumer Law, you are entitled to a refund. If they refuse, they are violating the law.
The law states that you are entitled to a refund when the product or service has a major failure. An example that fits your situation is: "it has a problem that would have stopped someone from buying it if theyâd known about it". You did not know that you would be booted from the conference within the first 5 minutes for no valid reason, therefore there is a major failure.
