The MOST CONTROVERSIAL AP Poll in Florida State HISTORY | 1988 Florida State

  • In 1988, Florida State was 6-1 after seven games, and was looking like one of the best teams in all of college football. After defeating East Carolina, they somehow dropped in the rankings from number five to number seven. And the reason why? A voter, quite simply, forgot to include the Seminoles on his ballot. Let's just say this mistake and this oversight did not go over well

Yeah, that big nothingburger of losing like 4 points in a poll after a win. Not a single spot, mind you. Less than a handful of POINTS. That was by far the most pointless video JG8 has ever made. They still stayed at the same ranking. FSU went down 2 REAL spots and, as explained in the video, was in danger of missing a big bowl because of conference tie-ins.
This didn't end up mattering much, either, but that was something worth being angry about rather than just how much you're ahead of #5.

I am an Alabama fan and 1987 and 1988 were not good years for us. I remember Florida State literally provided me with my only bright spot of the 1987 season. And that was a 34-6 absolute beatdown of the Auburn Tigers. It was Auburn's only loss of the season and it most likely kept the national championship game from being Auburn vs. Miami. Of course, Miami would have beaten Auburn, but still, seeing them get knocked out of the title picture was sweet. Then, in 1988, I once again counted on the Noles to salvage what was otherwise a dreary season. Florida State looked like they were well on their way to destroying Auburn again. Well, in the 1st half, anyway. Bowden's play calling went conservative in the second half, and it almost cost them. Thank goodness that the man now known as Coach Prime saved the night at the end of that one. Although it was only 13-7 and not 34-6 like the previous season, an Auburn loss was STILL oh so wonderful to see. Because they did not lose often back then.

Actually, the idea that "you're not going to drop Miami below Florida State" *is* relevant. Notre Dame only moved from #4 up to #2 after knocking off Miami; UCLA, who had been #5 preseason and was still undefeated, moved up from #2 to #1. Now, Nebraska started the season at #2, but was down to #7 after a loss to, you guessed it, UCLA earlier in the season, the Huskers' only loss. Furthermore, the week of this game, the Huskers knocked off #10 Oklahoma State, their second Top 10 win of the season (with the caveat that the first was in Week 1 against a preseason #10 that started 0-3...but with the countercaveat that all three of those losses were to ranked teams, including OK State themselves). At 6-1 with their lone loss coming to the #1 team, it would be all too logical (even though this didn't happen) for Nebraska to jump over 4-1 Miami...even though they entered the week *two* spots behind a team that Miami had beaten.
Interestingly enough, this logic would come into play two weeks later when UCLA lost to an unranked Wazzu. The Bruins fell to #6 and Nebraska fell from #5 to #7, despite winning that week while the #6 team had a bye week...that being Florida State.

Another poll peccadillo which was real and not an accident happened in the coaches' poll after the 1995 season. Nebraska trashed Florida 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl to win a second straight title, but 12-1 Florida, which was clearly still the No. 2 team, dropped to third in the final poll because two coaches ranked the Gators 11th and 13th on their ballots, which HAD to be intentional. This caused them to drop behind 11-1 Tennessee in the final poll, even though Florida had beaten them 62-37 during the regular season.
To my knowledge, no one has ever revealed which coaches did this. Phil Fulmer said it wasn't him, and I tend to believe him because he wouldn't have wanted Spurrier to crap on him in a later poll. I suspect one of the two coaches was UGA's Ray Goff, who was on the panel and had an ax to grind and nothing to lose, but who knows who the other one was? Maybe Mack Brown, who was still angry at Spurrier for something he'd done years before at Duke, but he had the same reason as Fulmer not to do something like this.

They're only the, third-best, team in Florida, Bobby Bowden, turned, doing, less, with, more, into, an, art form, and, the only bigger cheater, was, Barry Switzer, the, former, was, never, punished, because, of his, "Aw, Shucks," attitude, and, the, latter, was, only punished, because, his offenses became far too brazen to ignore.

Bowden cheated SO badly, his was the only one of those 3 schools not to have a deposition room set up for the NCAA.
