- Batman has been portrayed by 24 different actors (when you total up live action and voiceover work). But of those 24, Kevin Conroy has created a body of work that stands alone. In this video we explain what he's added to the character over the past 30 years--and why he is the DEFINITIVE Batman.

Every epic hero has a complicated origin story and Kevin’s recently came to life in DC Pride’s 2022 personal story, penned by Conroy himself, “Finding Batman”. This comic perfectly lays out why Kevin registers Bruce Wayne’s anguish and torment better than any other Bat-Men. But more on that later.
Kevin was born Irish and Catholic and spent most of his adolescent years in Connecticut. At age 17 he moved to New York. Now, because his family was dealing with a divorce, a suicidal father, and a schizophrenic brother - he was on his own to figure out how to attend school. Luckily he got a scholarship to Juilliard where he was roommates with Robin Williams, and in the same group with Kelsey Grammar.
After college, he moved to California to try his luck in TV. He went back and forth from California to NY to do Off-Broadway, Broadway. He played Hamlet twice. During this entire time, he stayed in the closet because he was afraid of discrimination. Back in the 80s, coming out as a gay man could literally end your career.
In his heartbreaking autobiographical comic, he talks about the movie deal he lost because the producer heard that he was gay. Guys it seriously is a great read, and really sheds light on what he brings to the batman character. Ah! Just so good! But I digress
It was his first time auditioning for an animated role and he knew very little about the character.
After being cast, Kevin goes on to play Batman in the epically perfect show Batman the animated series, the spin off Batman Beyond, the best version of the Justice League, cameoed in other popular shows like Superman, static shock, and the zeta project-and also appeared in animated films, video games and even DCUA animated movies… [pile on the images of all his projects to cover up the screen to show case how much he’s done]
When Batman the Animated Series came out, it was revolutionary.
See this is why you get the longevity-and why Kevin Conroy’s Batman still resonates. I watched him as a kid and the show is even more enjoyable as an adult.
To shape Bruce Wayne, Creator Bruce Timm and designer Eric Radomski drew inspiration from Frank Miller’s Batman Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. Gone were the days of Adam West camp and in came the brooding, tormented Batman using the dark noir streets of Gotham as his form of therapy to cope with his trauma. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
My brother is a police officer and did security for Mr. Conroy at a comic con. When my brother told him he became a cop because of his Batman. Kevin gave him an autographed picture and a handful of toy bat mobiles to give to kids who needed them after traumatic events.
He was too good for this world. RIP Mr. Conroy.
Holy crap! Another amazing way KC showed he really is Batman.
Kevin Conrad was so sweet 🥰
Awesome!😭😭😭😭
you shut up! I'm not crying, you're crying... that's freaking beautiful
RIP Kevin Conroy, he was vengeance, he was the night, he was Batman
🕯️
No he still is until the end of time
Goat cüm 1:03 1:04 1:05 1:05
cüm of the goat fuels my vengeance and my dad
Kevin Conroy isn’t just the best Batman, HE IS BATMAN!
Edit: Rest In Peace Kevin, Gotham is safe now.😞
This checks out
No he is the night he is vengeance and he is Batman
HE.IS.BATMAN!
Was Batman
@@lolstalgic9602 Always will be
Agree, 100%. And Mark Hamill was the best Joker.
Amen to that
Nah. Ledger is GOAT !
No way! Heath Ledger was absolutely the best
@@LUKAS_956 I wouldn't say that
@@elliott5052 nah
To this day, when ever I read a Batman comic it's Kevin's voice I hear in my head! Same goes for Mark Hamill for the Joker!
BROOO SAME
Any dialogue that Batman says, I hear Kevin saying those words
It genuinely feels like losing a friend. Can't believe he's gone.
I really like the DC animated films with Kevin, especially "Justice League: Doom". When Batman admits to developing contingency plans for taking out the members of the JL and Superman tells him, "None of us would every do that to you", Bruce replies, "Then you're damn fools." That was just awesome.
Kevin made that film's batman a gem. Especially when he admitted and said damn fools to the league
I would love to see it on film.
@@rjmeeks4152 sadly the Snyder movie made him look like a fool
1000% agree with you. that was by far the best line in any of the movies. proof that batman was always a step ahead. RIP Kevin ( Batman ) Conroy.
@@christophergongora7885 no it was We're Broke, and Josh Wedon made everyone a damn fool.
Kevin Conroy deserves an Oscar.
_Deserved_ an Oscar...
😂😢
@@lolstalgic9602 I was so confused by this video... he must have changed the title
@@qcrew2938 yeah
@@qcrew2938 original title was Why BATMAN The Animated Series' Kevin Conroy is the BEST BATMAN of All Time
Kevin Conroy made so many people’s childhoods the best when watching him voice Batman. There will never ever be another like him. RIP Kevin 😢
This man became a father to me even though I never met him. I didn't have the best childhood but his voice guided me through so much pain and trauma in my life. He truly is the greatest to ever play the role and was an amazing human being as well. Rest in peace to the Dark Knight, we will never forget you.
The animated series is actually a masterpiece
It truly is. The thing I think all the movies really don't understand is that not all the villains were not all about murder. Most had their own motivations and unique stories in the TV show you really got that. It gave you motive why the villains were the way they were. They were more than just 1 dimensional bad guys. Looking at the Mr. Freeze character in the TV show is tragic and the live film version was god awful. Depending on the villain they wanted different things they weren't all serial killers like the movies seem to focus on. Like the Clock King episode or Croc with the circus performer outcasts. I didn't see the newest Batman movie but I think of the Riddler as a thief more than a psychopathic killer. Maybe I am reading the room wrong that's just me. But I grewup and loved the Animated TV show as a teenager. I think the movies try and cram too many villains in a movie when each movie should stand alone focusing on 1 villain at a time. Then maybe have an Arkham prison break and have a cross over with Batman having to recapture a whole group of villains but hey that would make a shit ton of money and DC doesn't want to do that.
Kevin and Mark hammil have gotten so much praise over the years. But my Boi Tim daily as superman is also the ideal version who never gets praise. Even his son voiced the character. Honestly he could have even played him onscreen. All the actors were casted amazingly by Andrea Romano. Huge huge props
Tim Daly was absolutely amazing on STAS. Andrea is indeed the greatest VD ever
@@goat1408 She was brilliant. The casting of the entire DCAU was iconic. Susan EIsenberg, Michael Rosenbaum, Phil LaMarr, Carl Lumbly, George Newbern (who was able to seamlessly step into Superman's role after Tim Daly), Maria Canals-Barrera, Clancy Brown, etc. Every single actor was perfectly cast.
@@cryofpaine Yes indeed!
Andrea Romano was the boss DC woman. She chose every awesome voice cast in my childhood. I wanna be her!
For me it's George newbern. I watched jlu before ever watching a superman tas episode
He was *my* batman. I was in high school for Keaton, college for the rest of that run, watch every batman opening night. But those cartoons, nothing beat them. We would watch them after classes in college and that voice. He was perfect in the Arkham games, anyone else just sounds wrong.
Kevin has always been my favorite Batman. His line delivery is exceptional.
The word RIP in the title of this video of 2 months ago really creeps out... 🤷♂️
they changed the title when he died
The Dcau was truly magical, Bruce Tim and Paul Dini were fantastic. Crazy how well DC can do animation but have such struggles creating a live action universe
Agreed! It's like the left hand, and the right hand doesn't talk to each other. If they could step up their live-action game, DC would rule!
There's just way too much studio interference in the DC/CU, and they jumped in headfirst without a plan like the MCU had.
@@CrazyCarnieCory Yeah, I know. It's just sad!
@@CrazyCarnieCory the DCAU had plenty of interference too. They had more censorship and DC decided what characters they could and couldn't use. They also were not able to plan out story arcs because they never knew how long a show would go for.
This is EXACTLY why Zaslav should just REBOOT the whole DCU live action verse and put Bruce Timm and Paul Dini in charge as their Kevin Feige.
R.I.P Mr Conroy you will always be my Batman. If I'm reading a comic or just a Twitter meme it's your voice I hear and it always will be.
Today Is a hard day, RIP Kevin Conroy. You are Vengeance, you are the Night, You will always be Batman .
I have been one of the many lucky fans who has met him at a Comic Convention. He's a genuinely fantastic person who is so approachable and appreciative of his fans.
Rest in Peace Kevin Conroy. My first Batman from childhood. This hurts.
A million times yes! Conroy will always be my Batman. Having met him a few times a different comic cons I can confirm he’s not only a great Batman, but a great human being too!
Yeah Rest in peace he was the greatest of all time…
Got a chance to see him in person. You definitely get the presence of a living Batman everytime he speaks. His voice captures everything you’d expect
Kevin Conroy managed to make an animated character bring out emotions I did not think were possible from animation, when I was a kid. I am nearly 40 now, and I still get emotional watching the original animated series and Mask of the Phantasm. I absolutely cried like a baby when he sat with Ace as she was dying, and I cried like a baby Friday when I found out he had passed. Thank you so much Kevin for being THE Batman. You, sir, made my childhood awesome, and you will continue to make my adulthood awesome even after your passing. Thank you Kevin for all the amazing work.
for cartoon and game , yes kevin conroy is one of my fav batman... but for live action movies, its batfleck for me...
Happy 30th anniversary to Batman: The Animated Series. That launched the DCAU during the 90s to the early 2000s.
Amazing video Ryan! One of your best! I met Mr. Conroy at my local con a few years back (preCovid19). I attended his discussion panel, loving every minute of it, as the man spoke about his life and career. He went into the development of B:TAS, how he was cast and of course working with Mark Hamill. I bought a picture for him to sign. His rep asked before I got to the desk how I wanted the picture signed. I asked, can he write out, "The Line," and sign with that. She laughed and said of course. She knew what I meant. I think she even told him, he wants, "The Line," and he knew what I wanted. My picture says to Mike, "I am vengeance... I am the night... I am BATMAN!" I then, as a late 30ish grown adult man squeeled as he wrote out the words saying the line out loud in his amazing voice. I had one celeb guest that day that I hoped to meet and I met Kevin Conroy, the Batman of my generation and I'm sure for many others.
RIP to the legend. I'm in pieces today.
Who is the Best Batman?
Conroy: "I am Vengeance, I am the Night, I am Batman!"
Kevin Fucking Conroy.
His voice as Bruce to Batman are different and always had that strength to it. Best Animated Batman.
Rest in Peace Mr. Conroy,Mask of the Phantasm,Batman tas,Batman Beyond, you were amazing actor and person,Batman tas is what got me into Batman in the 90s.
The confusion I had when I saw the title "Rip Kevin Conroy" for a video posted 2 months ago.
Met Kevin Conroy at one of this years comic cons in the UK, was safe to say I was absolutely star struck and let him know he was the batman I grew up with. He was extremely friendly and was kind enough to sign my season one BatMan TAS that I've had for over 10 years :)
RIP Kevin 😭😭 thank you so much for all the memories!
My brain was doing backflips trying to figure how this video is two months old but says "RIP Kevin Conroy" in the title
Yeah me too but then realised they must have retitled it
R.I.P. Kevin Conroy… The BEST Batman
Rest In Peace Kevin Conroy your voice will always be the batman voice i hear when i read any batman comic 😢
I began watching this series for the first time last month and have fallen in love I can see why people love it can't wait to finish it
He will forever be the gold-standard for Batman. He not only understood the character, but he did so much to define and shape him. He gave Batman heart. RIP Kevin Conroy.
Kevin Conroy is 100% my favorite Batman. I grew up watching Justice League, and he was my introduction to the character. I don't know if anybody can ever top DCAU Batman for me. I don't understand how Warner Brothers is messing up the DCEU so badly when the material is RIGHT THERE!!! 🤦🏾♀️
Be at peace Kevin, you were the voice, you were the soul, you are, Batman!
RIP Kevin Conroy. You were and ALWAYS will be the one true Batman! ❤
No one will ever outshine his talent.🥺✊🏽
I legit say that the animated Batman is the greatest on a regular basis.
That scene where batman is falling and asking for air support because he cant fly made me laugh so hard the first time I saw it. It was so dry and perfectly delivered. I seriously have looked up that scene so many times lol
RIP Kevin Conroy. This popped up after i looked up the theme song to listen to after hearing of his passing. He is the best batman hands down. Thank you for being a huge part of my childhood.
RIP came to think about the grand father we all wanted!
He also gets points as best Batman as he lived with a guy named Robin...
Rip Mr Conroy!!! The real Batman
I was just looking at season 1 of Batman Beyond and forgot he played Batman in Terry’s suit for a hot minute. His scene with the gun was incredible.
This video was such an amazing tribute made to the man while he was still with us.
Watching it again after hearing the news today...
Thank you.
I'm 42 and I remember coming home from school and watching the premier of Batman the animated series and let me tell you I was like OMG this is so freaking cool everything about it was so extraordinary it's edged in my heart and mind the very best Batman animated series ever and when I hear that voice when ever I think of how's batman would really sound like there just no doubt in my mind it's Kevin Conroy! He was is and always will be BATMAN !!!!! I will definitely miss him and my condolences to the whole family. Rest easy Bruce 😢
about the same age and agree 200%!!!
Smart to change the title.......regardless......this man was indeed an icon. FOREVER.
One of my favorite scenes was with Darkseid. He threatened to destroy an entire planet to kill Darkseid. Darkseid’s response (played by Andre Braugher, the best Darkseid) “Well played”.
This makes me sad, because despite all of the Batmen that had come and gone, Kevin Conroy was MY Batman. I was a 90s kid through and through, and my siblings and I would enjoy every morning when there was no school watching Batman: The Animated Series.
Rest In Peace my caped crusader...
My Dark Knight.
Rest In Peace... Batman.
This hurts.
Kevin Conroy is a legend. Everything he brought to the role took that project to the next level. Thank you, not only for the entertainment, but for delivering to us the PERFECT Batman and Bruce Wayne to us and dedicating so much to us over the decades.
Was sad to hear this on friday as i had been quoting BTAS for a few days prior out of nowhere it was on my mind and I got excited with the possibility of more Batman project with KC,especially with he recent DC news.
But KC has given us A LOT. He will always be with us and awaken the hero within us all.
Thank you Kevin Conroy, RIP.
Kevin Conroy is my Batman he's the one i think of when some one says who's your favorite. i didn't know and really don't care that he's gay i still love him due to the fact that he's so good at what he does and thats make Batman well Batman
Hit the nail on the head with this one 👏 👍
2 months later this might be the best KC tribute. RIP Kevin "The Batman" Conroy
Didn’t know Kevin was gay until today. It kind of changes my mind about him a little, but not in a negative direction.
It breaks my heart to think about how he felt he had to hide who he was for years, and that him just being himself actually cost him a job is horrible. At the same time he showed incredibly strength and spirit in how he seemingly stayed positive throughout, and for that he deserves so much respect. He was an incredible actor and a great man and will be sorely missed. RIP Kevin Conroy
Yup... he is one of the best. It's amazing, his talent with his voice acting is the iconic Batman. When I read batman.... it always his voice.
So true this show was amazing so raw so much grit I always ran home to make sure I watched it this cartoon was ahead of it's time & a time where show's we're made real good & with a real passion not for inclusion or afraid to show kid's the true reality of life & not sugar coated it
I am extremely heartbroken.. loved this man since I was 4. Rest in Paradise Kevin.10-11-2022
R.i.p
So cool you made this 2mo ago, in time to celebrate him in life, and now it’s a great piece for the history of our iconic hero, Kevin. Truly the Batman I think most of us have spent more time with, making him the gold standard. Thanks
He's the voice of my childhood.
RIP Mr Conroy. You were a legend and as a Batman fan, it was an honor to witness you embody this roll.
Thanks for posting this. Me and my friend were one of the very small handful of people in my neighborhood back in the day to see Mash of the Phantasm in theaters - and WE LOVED IT!!. Only just found out about Kevin Conroy's passing this morning. This is a huge loss, comparable to us losing Stan Lee. RIP
So glad to rewatch this after Kevin has passed. He IS MY BATMAN!
awesome video Ryan!
Just realized they changed the title, and it hurts even more.
You made me and my son cry, Ryan! We've always believed Kevin to be the GOAT Batman. Your lovely video only made us adore him all the more. 10/10
Another video discussion that makes this channel excel. It’s like being on film school again. Nice one mate.
I have gone on many Kevin Conroy rants usually summing up to the point that he's the best Batman of all time that there ever will be or ever was... Much to the protest of my friend's ears....
I couldn't agree more
No argument here! 100% agree. The Animated Series is the best version and most entertaining version of Batman
"Without Batman, crime has no Punchline."
😔
I didn’t know you made this video Ryan, and given the news we got last week, it was a great foreshadowing
Interesting points, but to be safe I should probably go rewatch Batman the animated series, Baman Beyond, and Justice League unlimited from beginning to end.
What a great essay! I agree 💯 and have been saying for years that Mr. Conroy is the best and Mark Hamill is the best Joker. Thanks for creating, this video literally gave me goosebumps. Can’t wait for the next essay.
100%. Amazing video and thank you for spotlighting him.
2 months old? For those confused they can change the titles after the video and in this case after the passing of a legend. Great watch! I knew some of this about Conroy but there was a lot I didn't know.
That confused me pretty hard
RIP to Mr Conroy, Batman will forever be my favorite character and Mr Conroy is a huge reason why.
R.I.P. Batman
Ryan, you are a Master of your Craft! The depth of your analysis and ability to clearly express underlying themes, messages, and relative perspectives is almost unparalleled in the whole of the interwebs. Keep up the amazing work !!!!!!!!💚💚💚
I couldn't agree more, thank you for adding extra layers to appreciation for Conroy's acting as the best Batman ever.
I disagree Kevin Conroy is not the best Batman, he is THE BATMAN!
RIP Mr. Conroy. You will be sorely missed.
Ever since I started making it a point to try and recognize voice actors, Kevin has been the definitive Batman, everyone else is just fighting for second. When I would stay at conventions with friends we would watch DCAU movies at night to wind down, and it was always comforting hearing him on screen. I had no idea about any of his personal struggles before Finding Batman, and reading it broke my heart, but the way he was able to use that pain in his performances was beautiful. To add another drop to the sea of fan gushing, he truly is the best.
What a great idea for a video - thanks for this!
R.I.P Kevin Conroy
The best Batman there ever was or ever will be, RIP Kevin Conroy.
Excellent as always Ryan. It should be noted for those watching this the day it debuts that it's pegged to the 30th anniversary of the first episode of TAS -- Sept. 5, 1992.
Thanks Ryan and Screencrush, great tribute and RIP Kevin, you were the definitive Dark Knight
Im so glad that Mr Conroy felt the fan love during his lifetime
Kevin Conroy was the best Batman, Tim Daly was the best Superman, and they made that relationship (especially the ‘meet cute’) the best it’s ever been.
Great video! Simply, the best.
I was really happy to get a chance to meet Kevin back a few years ago. So cool, got a few Batman items autographed. 😁
8:15 There's a lot more than one scene where he does the Batman voice as Bruce Wayne! In fact , nearly every time he's not "being Bruce", such as when he's alone with Afred or other people he trusts, he defaults to his Batman voice. By the later episodes of TAS ("The New Batman Adventures" episodes) and Batman Beyond, he never uses his Bruce Wayne voice anymore, which I always found weird. In any case, his Batman voice seems to be his normal speaking voice, and the softer Bruce Wayne voice is the act.
For the character this kind of makes sense. Ever since he put on the cowl, he has always seen himself as The Batman and his "mask" is Bruce Wayne.
@@claytonwillis8474 Of course, he himself confirms this to his successor Terry McGuiness in _Batman Beyond_ after the latter pondered just exactly how old man Bruce was able to withstand all that had happened, "1. I'm not a lunatic. 2. The voice kept calling me 'Bruce', but that's NOT what I call myself." "What DO you call yourself?" ~Bruce gives a hard stare, as a tempo score similar to the classic _B:TAS_ theme plays in the background, as the realization dons on Terry~ "I suppose you would, but that's MY name now." ~elderly Bruce gives Terry an inkling of a smile & a slight nod of recognition~
This show and xmen are nothing but pure 🔥🔥🔥
He was Batman. You can have any other actor coming in and put on the cape and cowl, but Conroy had depth, humility, and passion for the role more then anyone else.
When he spoke, I knew who it was, the dark Knight.
Thank you Kevin, you gave us a precious gift, and you will never be forgotten ❤️🦇
Thanks for putting this back up today. It cheered me up after hearing what happened to the greatest Batman.
Just guna ask why something that’s 2 months old is saying rip when he just died yesterday 😮😢
@UnWaifu it said best Batman like I’m guna pass that up
This video came out 2 months before he died I'm so confused
