Amorphis is my absolute favorite metal band- their music is unique
"The bee is a prominent character in the Kalevala and features in moments of birth and resurrection. Once the world has been created we are informed: ââfrom the clouds dripped honey.â The women of the north are coveted, not just for their beauty, but also for their culinary skills with honey: âshe may bake honey bread, know how to brew beer.â Shortly afterwards, âsmith Ilmarinen was bornâ and a âbee rose up from the ground⊠O bee, lightweight man, bring mead on your wing, carry honey on your tongue, from six flowery tips, from seven grass tops, for steel things to be made, for iron to be wrought⊠spill honey on the earth.â Apparently, the bee is essential to the forging of the world.
LemminkĂ€inenâs mother resurrects her son using honey-based potions and spells, collected from the underworld with the assistance of a bee. Her concoction includes a drop of mead brought to anoint the weary one, to tend the ill-befallen⊠O bee, bird of ours, king of the forest flowers, go now to fetch some honey and to find some mead⊠to heal the ill.â
The resurrection ritual continues:
So it (the bee) comes panting, travels doubled up, all its wings drenched in mead, its feathers in melted honey. She, LemminkĂ€inenâs mother, took the ointments and anointed the weary one, tended the ill-befallen; but no help came from them, no words came to the man.
LemminkĂ€inenâs motherâs does not despair:
Bee, my little bird, fly that other way, right over nine seas to an island on the main, a honey mainland, to Thorâs new cabin, the Worshipful boundless one. There is pleasant honey there and good ointment there, which will suit sinews and be good for limbs.
The bee obeyed:
The honey was being cooked⊠in tiny cauldrons, in beautiful pans that would hold a thumb, fit a fingertip. The bee, slight man, got some of those ointments.
Next, we learn:
The Creator sang charms and the pure God talked, the lord anointed his brood inured by an evil power. Dip your wings in mead, and your feathers in melted honey.
The bee laments its chances of completing the task and is told:
You will get there easily, trip there handsomely, over the moon, underneath the sun, between heavenâs stars. For one day you will flutter to the moonâs brow-bones, for another you will whizz to the Great Bearâs shoulder blades, for a third you will soar up to the Seven Starsâ back; then âtis a mite of a way a tiny circuit to where God the holy lives to the blessed oneâs dwellings.
And so the bee flies to the âAlmightyâs chamberâ and returns with the ointment that allows LemminkĂ€inenâs mother to successfully complete her sonâs resurrection."
That was beautiful man.
I remember when I was at the show in Tampa with Amorphis, Delain and the absolute legend Anneke Van Giersbergen, once Amorphis played this one I was absolutely transported to the first time I'd ever heard it. It was such an amazing experience tbh

The song has an interesting Christian meaning maybe. The bees come from the Heaven and give life to old pagan kings of a pagan underworld.

Almost all of their songs are based on Finnish mythology and folklore. This one is no different.
Nothing Christian about that.
Imho the "silent prince electors" are the male bees that mate with a new queen bee to create a new hive.
Kalevala technically has Christian metaphor in it. Vainamoinen is banished by the son of a virgin mother at the end of the epic. Lemmenkainen could also be seen as a Jesus type of hero, but I don't think that was anyone's perception initially as he is more of a Finnish interpretation of Baldur (who also is killed and goes to the underworld).
Kalevala also mentions the words "God" and "Heaven" a lot, but it could maybe just mean Ukko or some other great spirit.
@@revylokesh1783 in Kalevala the bee is a powerful being that can bring princes and leaders to the world. Honey is magical in Finnish mythology according to Kalevala
