    Scotty remember boost is a product of restriction and you've had the manifolds opened up and flowed so 14psi is a lot of boost with that free flowing setup.

    If you run it again before you pull all the cooler pipes off: start it up, put a ping-pong ball (or something) in the silicone dent, then mash the throttle to see how far you can launch it 🤣

    Thanks for the entertaining content throughout the year Scotty 🙂 It has been a rather shitty year for us here in VIC but the rest of the world too. Everyone remember to make use of the free mental health phone services available if you have been struggling during this year 👍
    As for Supermang, maybe a custom water to air cooler tucked up close to the inlet manifolds inlet port to try and package things nicely and reduce boost tubing lengths. Once all done she'll be a lively barge on the road and return good times down the track.

    Great experiment Scotty. These M90's are heat pumps but I've never seen one intercooled. I wasn't sure how much extra power adding an intercooler would make.
    Back in the day a mate had an M90 on his 1UZ Soarer (otherwise all stock) vs my 1UZ Soarer with full bolt-ons, such as long tube headers, exhaust, piggy backed ECU with MAF-less tune. The Naturally aspirated car went just as hard.
    Keep the experiments coming. Have a great break and thanks for all of the entertainment this year. Really appreciate it - you guys are doing a great job with the channel.

  • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
    @DodgyBrothersEngineering Před 2 lety +1

    Ohh this feels like a Richard Holdner video, we are getting different types of intercooler tests, bloody fantastic. Changing the cam won't help a great deal as you are up against the threshold of the blower. You have just found out what many others have found... Spinning the blower faster doesn't equate to much more power. As you are increasing speed trying to deliver more air, you are proportionally decreasing the blower efficiency (and adding back heat). The back flow at the blower is limiting the boost. The only way to get more boost is to reduce restriction, or put on a bigger blower, a bigger cam would help some, as would going to two barrel coolers, but ultimately the physical limitations of the blower sealing is going to prevent you getting much more boost out of it.
    Just a little food for thought... You are providing the barrel with colder water than it is humanly possible to in the car during normal driving conditions, and while that is great for making peak numbers on a dyno, it isn't going to be sustainable on the street. Being this is not a turbo car where you can easily adjust the boost levels, you are going to need to provide it with a cooling source that can sustain the boost level you want. I know you like the idea of the barrel cooler, but a regular air to air might be more practical to be able to safely tune it.

    • @wetsox278
      @wetsox278 Před 2 lety

      Spot on, I found this out the hard way. it reached a point where going faster didn't improve power, it did the opposite.

    • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
      @DodgyBrothersEngineering Před 2 lety

      @@wetsox278 this is fairly typical of this type of blower. They really aren't designed for high boost applications. About 10 PSI seems to be about their sweet spot, leaning on them just creates more heat and eventually leads to losing power as you discovered. I have seen some people experiment with putting nylon strips on the rotors like B&M did with their blower (basically a 6-71 clone) but then you have physical contact between the rotors leading to all the parts including the seals wearing. Big boost is best left to turbos and centrifugal blowers.

    Intercooler as a rule are a restriction, the cold air coming out of it is denser air so the combined that’s why your are reading lower boost numbers. But colder dense air will make more power at lower boost numbers. Boost psi is generally just a measurement of restriction

  • @RhysK94
    @RhysK94 Před 2 lety

    Higher the psi reading the worse your setup is, aka more restriction.
    Means you have a good flowing setup, with extractors, heads and camshaft. 14psi sounds bang on for a 2.55" pulley to me. 2.55" is advertised as 19psi, so a 5psi well flowing setup sounds correct to me.
    Nothing wrong there with your setup 👌

  • @DodgyBrothersEngineering

    Scotty you haven't lost any boost at all and it has nothing to do with the extra piping you have in place. You have only lost PSIG (Pressure Shown In Gauge). The blower is a positive displacement blower, therefore it will produce x volume of air every revolution (in free air). Unless you have air leaks you have not lost any boost (you may have actually gained some). This confuses a lot of people, but it comes down to simple science.
    If you were to build a metal container 1' x 1' x 1' you would have a container that holds 1 cubic foot of air, if you put a vacuum / pressure gauge in the top of that metal box it would read 0 PSI (it would be at 14.7 PSI, the earth's normal atmospheric pressure, but the gauge is calibrated to read 0). If you took that container and put it on the stove on low heat you would see the needle start to read positive pressure (boost), but the volume of the air inside the box remains unchanged at 1 cubic foot. Hot air expands and it looks for the path of least resistance to expand into, and that is the pushing on the gauge.
    Conversely if you took that same container and placed it into an ice bucket like the one you have there it would read less than zero (vacuum) because the air is shrinking inside the box, trying to suck it in. You have created the second scenario, by cooling the air so much you are starting from a position where the cooled air is showing less PSI in the gauge for the same amount of air displaced by the blower.
    Of course there are a couple of variable to be thrown into the mix. Nothing is ever that simple. While it is a positive displacement blower, that is not the whole story. We say it displaces x amount of air every revolution, but that is not strictly true. It is a misnomer... It only displaces x volume when in free air (nothing either side of the blower). Once we sit it on the engine it has resistance, the greater the resistance the less efficient the blower becomes, because the blower isn't perfectly sealed and air will start pushing back past the rotors, meaning the displacement per rotation is actually less than it is in free air.
    By cooling the air after it leaves the blower you are shrinking that air causing the pressure inside the system to be be lower, which in tern means the rotors are seeing less back pressure, so in essence you could gain a very small amount of boost by less air being pushed back past the rotors (greater efficiency).
    BUT and there is always a BUT... you have placed a restriction in the path of the air in the form of a barrel cooler. The cheap barrel coolers with typically have greater "pressure drop" a fancy word for resistance, forcing the air inside the system to gain pressure again and start working against you, countering the effects of the cooling. The mega expensive brands will typically have better flow and less resistance through the core, but you pay a premium for that better flow. You could put two cheap barrel coolers in parallel, get better performance, and still be way cheaper than one of the name brand.

    I have a feeling that it may be time to upgrade the supercharger...possibly even get a NA intake manifold and find a large centrifugal supercharger for it...or maybe even a turbo???
