    Scotty, if it we me putting those rocker cover gasket on I'd glue them to the covers, I use contact adhesive glue. That way they stay put when coming off and going on, coz you know it'll be that one time when you just have to quickly rip one off and chuck it back on and it'll piss oil all over the pipes 👌

    I love Valiant's. Many decades ago I had two slant six's, a VE and VF. In the mid 70's and early 80's the VF went around Australia 3 times, about a third of it on dirt, station tracks, stock routes, etc. All I did was raise the front one inch by adjusting the torsion bars and whacked on some cheap ($19 at the time) rear overload springs to lift the car an inch and a half and support my mechanics heavy tool box and other gear in the cavernous boot. That car was indestructible.

    I did an experimental 318 build in the early 2000's. We used a 90 over A/polyblock and modified 360 J heads mated to it. It was a somewhat mild for street use build with 10;1 JE custom made pistons. We used a 550 something lift solid lifter mopar performance cam with roller rockers. We put twin 600 holleys on a tunnel ram up top. With just a basic tune it made 292 hp and 272 ft lbs of torque at the rear wheels on 93 octane. It was in a 1964 Dart. It held its own pretty good drag racing. A lot of people were surprised how good it pulled through the RPM range.

    General question (everyone seems to do it), why the tuning on the dyno without airfilter? if youre not chasing a magic number and tuning for general running, wouldn't you prefer to tune as youd drive it (with filter and air-cleaner), potentially picking up any little idiosyncrasies it might create?

  • @frankensteincreations4740

    No more than 1/2 turn on hydraulic lifter preload… Too much preload may allow the lifter to pump up and hang the valves open. Also, there’s only one way to run the valves. Weather it’s solid or hydraulic. That is, exhaust opening intake closing. Adjust intake right when the exhaust valve begins to open. And adjust the exhaust valve when the intake is about 1/2 to 3/4 closing. 👍

    The real question is , when will the rest of the underside of the bonnet get the oven cleaner treatment?
    Surely a clean bonnet is good for a couple of horse powers? 😂

  • @DodgyBrothersEngineering

    Thank you Scotty! So few people on YT have the right attitude towards dyno figures. Most people only seem to be interested is some wanker peak power number they are never going to see the moment they close the bonnet. Shits me no end to see these people carry on like clowns, trying to impress you when they are only really lying to themselves. I do however wish you would do dyno runs the way you plan to run it on the street with the air cleaner on. Yes power will be down, but BS power numbers aren't what you get to drive anyway. I would rather see a lower power number and know the AFR is right, than see a higher number and have no clue what the actual AFR is in road trim.
    I appreciate in this particular video that you are going backwards and forwards with the dizzy, but you have that really simple click on air cleaner it is only a few seconds to remove each time. Plus dynoing without the air cleaner on you have absolutely no clue whether the air needs are being met or not. It could be running massively lean or rich with the air cleaner in place you are never going to know, it might be gagging for air and you have no clue it has a restriction issue because your not testing the air cleaner as part of the package.
    A final pull should be done with the bonnet down. This is the real number you can expect on the street.

    • @STREETMACHINETV
      @STREETMACHINETV  Před rokem

      I race it with no air cleaner which is why it was off. On the street the power means little

    • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
      @DodgyBrothersEngineering Před rokem

      @@STREETMACHINETV it is possible to pick up air flow with an air cleaner on. Granted this is a very rare case, but the shape of the base can sometimes increase flow into the carby neck (like a velocity stack). Have you done runs with and without it on? It may run quicker with it on at lower hp figures. Defusing the air sometimes be beneficial.

  • @DodgyBrothersEngineering

    Scotty did you change retainers at the same time you changed springs? I'm betting it is more likely to be related to a slightly different installed height than the spring pressure. Spring pressure shouldn't alter the range of motion. Although... I am going to have to disagree with myself... If the seat pressure is fairly high and the springs in the hydraulic lifters are on the weak side it could alter the geometry ever so slightly. Not sure on this one. Did you have slightly more pre load on the lifter after the spring change? That would alter geometry.

    • @seanb250
      @seanb250 Před rokem

      It’s more to do with the open (compressed) spring pressures and the angles involved with the valve open.

    • @STREETMACHINETV
      @STREETMACHINETV  Před rokem +1

      Different springs but same retainers and locks.

    • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
      @DodgyBrothersEngineering Před rokem

      @@seanb250 how do you figure that? I think he only changed the springs (no cam change) so total lift should remain the same (unless you run something like Rhodes lifters where they have a tendency to bleed down). When it is on the nose (greatest spring pressure) the likelihood of compressing the lifter is at its greatest (oil pressure dependent) . The only thing this may do is result in lower lift, meaning less angle of momentum / chance of bind.
      If it was running without issue before and changing the spring somehow made the problem appear, it could only be something that allows more movement OR the same amount of movement, but starting from a different point. That is what made me wonder about the lifter pre load.

      Thinking about it different installed height wouldn't make any difference, because the valve length is the same and the rocker shaft is fixed, unless the rocker was somehow catching the edge of the retainer. But being they are the same retainers and keepers that should mean the same install height anyway. Heavier springs have to be either pushing the spring further into the lifter bucket during operation, or more preload on the lifter to alter the static geometry. Sure is a weird one either way. Must have been so close before.

      @seanb250 Před rokem

      @@DodgyBrothersEngineering different spring rates, you can compress a spring to the same height and have a lot more pressure “loaded” up pushing back against the rocker, this as well as the pushrod also levering against the adjuster with now more pressure probably broke the adjuster. No extra lift required.

      Does it matter what it makes? I could put the stock converter in it, change the wheels and tyres, even put a holley on it. It'll make more power but it won't be as nice to drive. We'll see how it goes on the track.

      A mild 318 was never going to make anywhere near 400hp. But if a number on a page is what you are worried about, then you've completely missed the point of this build.
