How Will Changing Teams Affect Shohei Ohtani's Cards?!

  • Shohei Ohtani is one of the most important sports figures in baseball history. For this reason, Ohtani's baseball cards have commanded an extremely heft price tag the last few years. One thing that is uncertain however is how his baseball cards will fare now that he is potentially changing teams and dealing with a second Tommy John. In this video we discuss Ohtani, Juan Soto, and others. We also discuss our biggest sports card losses up to this point.

    I saw a post yesterday where Ohtani said that winning is a bigger factor in him choosing his next team then destination. I like to see players who are looking to compete to win and not just show up to look good for tv. Money can't buy championships as you can see by the two smaller market teams that were in the world series. Where will he go? I don't know baseball well enough even to speculate, but I am interested to find out and follow him on his journey.

      Yes for sure! And he’s going to get paid a lot anyway. When it’s $400 million vs $500 million, how much does the difference in money matter?? Seems clear that Ohtani would take lesser money for a better chance at a ring.

    I CAN ATTEST that entry level Shohei Ohtani has taken much more of a hit than his higher end stuff. Some of his PSA 10 entry level Rookie cards were up in the $500 - 1000 range back in late June - Early July so that is nothing to sneeze at. Even like $250 ++ for the most common of his rookie cards. I should know, I sent 17 different 2018 Ohtani base Rookies into PSA as a bulk back in early July. Bad timing for me because the injury happened while they were being graded. Got them back in September, 14 out of 17 came back at PSA 10! Why am I not happy about that? Because I ended up selling these for only 30% of what they sold for at the peak of early July. That's a 70% drop from the peak on his PSA 10 entry level rookie stuff. My 2 cents. Also, I feel like this is the perfect time to buy. More than half of the cards I sold on ebay were shipped out to Japan. Don't forget about those Japanese fans that are huge Shohei Collectors. My advice for anyone buying this new Ohtani dip.... If you can realize 2x or 3x or 4x in the future when he is pitching and hitting lights out again in the same season, that will be the time to save 2 or 3 of your favorite and dump the rest. There is still good profits in Ohtani, next new high peak should come in about 2 years.

    I wished and thought Ohtani would have picked my Mariners from the time he arrived, but if he goes I'm all for it not sure we(Mariners) would shell out that type of money though unless he chooses to waive some $$ which I wouldn' t rule out since he came here and took less money before age 25. My thoughts on Trout.... I honestly hope he stays an Angel although I do feel bad he hasn't made it to a World Series but no matter what team he goes to its never a guarantee. I'd care more about his legacy and that will continue to keep him relevant in the hobby especially if he continues adding to his already impressive resume. Almost similar to Ken Griffey Jr. I honestly did not like that he chose the Reds (although I understood his choice for doing so) his cards still sell no matter what because he was popular and well liked (like Trout) and once he returned to Seattle it just felt right. I don't want Trout to go somewhere else and be on the decline almost similar to Griffey just to get a ring. Like Tony Gwynn (although he made it to a World Series) his legacy as Mr. Padre still stands and his stuff still sells. Just my opinion though a little old school thought.

    • @SpitballinCards
      @SpitballinCards  Před 7 měsíci

      I get that. I think Griffeys mariners cards still
      Outsell any of his Reds cards - and not just because of the rookies.
      I’d just hate for trout to never taste October baseball again. He’ll always be thought of as an Angel, but some big postseason moments with the Phillies, Braves or Mets would definitely add to his legacy.
      Ohtani could still choose Seattle - if any ownership knows the value of international stardom, it’s the Mariners.

True the Mariners aren't dishing out that kind of money (still can't believe they did that for Cano - smh) but any combination of either a veteran ace or speedy high avg/contact hitter or above average power hitter & most important team chemistry we can make it to the ALCS. I would personally say ohtani is a sell when he chooses his new team. He will only DH this year and if he starts out slow or doesn’t have a hitting season like he did last year, his prices will drop ever further. They might rebound when he pitches again, but who knows if he will be the same pitcher. It took him 2 years to recover from TJ last time. Not to mention the dodgers are cursed in October. If that’s where he ends up going
