    I agree mostly with Jeff. Judge doesn’t have to necessarily be a HOFer. He’s a Yankee and the captain at that. Ask Don Mattingly how popular he was and for the 80s junk wax, his cards hold value.

      Chris here - very true. Mattinglys rookies easily outsell those of his HOF contemporaries (McGriff, Smith, Baines, even Boggs!).

    $80,000 for Paul Skenes is called "taking money off the table" and you're a true WINNER for selling it and using the proceeds for potential lifestyle changing things like a new car, paying down a mortgage, paying debt, saving for retirement, etc. As a collector from the 1980's, we've all seen "Busts" and Studs who turn to Duds, after debuting hot and colling off or getting injured. Anyone who proclaims "But Wait, this time it's different with Skenes!!!" are misguided. Even HOF pitchers cool off. Do you think Skenes can become the next Nolan Ryan? Or more like Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, Pedro Matinez, etc.if he's blessed with consistency of success. Can you image any modern era HOF player card being worth $80k? The whole notion of a 1/1 isn't as prestigious as it sounds. Sure, it's "one of a kind" but the card companies create these daily every year in so many variations. Babe Ruth has a 1/1, many through a plethora of releases through the years. Population is only important in a supply and demand situation. I think the Michael Jordan "Autographed Logoman" 1/1 is a joke in valuation in terms of it was created as a collectible and not organic like his rookie card. Walking off with $80k is smart. Sure, it might go to $250k, but it could just as easily and more likely go down to $20k either due to diminishing performance, injury or a more popular "next big thing" rookie comes to the league. We've seen so many flavor of the month players. High ticket big money cards are created for "flipping" exchanging hands over and over like a game of "hot potato", they're rarely long term investments, so the smart card sellers/buyers know it's a gamble and about timing. It's not investing in wine that ages well in time.

    • @SpitballinCards
      @SpitballinCards Před 21 hodinou

      Chris here - I totally agree. If I had a card that could sell for even close to $80k, I’d list it in a heartbeat! That’s real life changing money. I love the hobby, but not that much Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

    Hello I have been watching some of your videos and I have seen some of the other 2 guys except for Phil’s videos and I think a lot of this subject isn’t really about a certain player or card all the time. I have noticed that many of the influencers have some kind of agenda behind their words or posts. I don’t consider you guys as influencers because you are just talking about the hobby and what’s going on. I think of an influencer in any aspect of life, as just that, an influencer or marketer. I think most of them in the card hobby/industry either are marketing for specific products and that’s fine but I will use SCI for example because t-pot is on here and I think he is very biased towards marketing for fanatics and it is not made clear in his videos directly that he’s a marketer/influencer for fanatics mainly. Influencers seem to not do what you guys do and talk about ups and downs and the reality of it. I will use an example that some of the influencers not on CZcams but social media (which I don’t use), but they have pictures of their cards in one hand and money in the other. I think that certain people no matter what they influence, should be aware of they have the attention of many people and make it clear. In cards I have had so many people on eBay that I can only assume they follow some influencers that don’t give them the information of how hard it is to get to a place where you can make decent money and let them know it’s not easy and it takes a lot of hard work to get yourself known and established. I think it’s one place that people feel betrayed by some of these influencers and figure that they without knowing how tough it is throw cards up on an auction and think they can just sit back and wait for the money to come in. I don’t deal in too many high dollar cards but it is relevant because I have had too many people that I have won auctions for relatively cheap and after the auction is over and I paid they just refuse to ship the cards because they figured it should have sold a lot higher. Some have been really good and have said that they expected more but it is the chance they take. Some come right out and say they won’t ship it and ignore messages. I have even had to report a few that canceled and refunded me telling me they wanted more and then relisted. I think that’s more of an issue that influencers have to address because of the bigger issues than the ones that suggest who they think is worthy of investment. For me I think of it as entertainment and learning to make better informed decisions but some people are lazy and just want others to do the work and tell them who to buy and what products but they have no one to blame but themselves. Sorry for the long comment. I just think it’s a more complex concept than just a simple pump and dump.

    I don’t see a problem removing unwanted things that were added to cards. The key here is the removal of foreign substances. If I spill coffee on my card & I can then remove the coffee then I don’t see the problem at all. Dirt, gum, mold, etc. All should be fair game. As long as nothing remains on the card. Also, returning an edge & corner to its original state should be fair game.

    $80k is a bit insane for a pitcher who just started to play. Since he is a flame thrower good probability of Tommy John in his future. I hope it doesn't happen. My guess is someone with mega dollars in wealth bought this card. $80k for this person is like $8 for us hahaha. I like Aaron Judge but like Jeff I passed on buying rarer RCs due to the prospectus of injury. I was wrong. I do like Soto more because of his age. But I do wish I bought some Judge RCs. I even passed up on Judge's Field of Dreams nonRC short print which was more affordable at time. That's the beauty of collecting/investing. Limited money but unlimited appetite lol.
