Phil brings up a good point about SP and SSP cards regarding having to explain the significance to potential buyers. Especially when we look to the future 5 maybe 10+ years from now. My example is the 2008 stadium club DiMaggio cut out card I sold where I had to explain to people correcting my description or questioning the validity of the card I personally pulled from the pack. I regret selling, but was just too annoyed to continue explaining the story. Thanks

I agree with the comments of image variation, they re mixture collecting and potiential growth in value. Like any commodity demand must outstrip supply. Typically I don't buy non rookies or 1st year of new team unless the player's RC non base is out of reach price wise. I did this with Trout and less degree with ohtani, bought their image variation because it fits mixture I mentioned. Investment wise maybe Trout SP work out. If not I still have enjoyable unique cards. Great clip you are truly the best and learned a ton from you.

Counterpoint to the “the more story you have to tell the less valuable it is” statement would be that as a collector, wouldn’t one want to tell the story and that be where the value is? Either a personal story from a year or the award/breakout/best season story of a favorite player being good to the collector/collection. Would depend on what type of player collector one is but I really enjoy cards with a story even if they’re not as valuable as rookie card or original team counterparts. Looking at value with an investors eyes if one has to use a paragraph to explain why the specific card has value I agree is not the same as “rookie card gold parallel”. But for fun with cardboard pictures sake I think a story is valuable even if not monetarily.

I collect based on significant sets, incredible images and notable yeas. Alll are important and vary to certain degrees, it's impossible to rank as each category has legendary cards! As a collector, all you can do is buy what speaks to you and what fits with your PC. For me collecting Lebron, any card from his Cavs championship run, or celebrating that is awesome. Or with Greinke, it's definitely 2009 Cy young or 2013-19 peak years (but I prefer KC unis). I will never buy a card of his in a Houston uni! Every player I collect is because of a special time that I connect with, so I collect corresponding cards 👌

So we put together a run of Judge’s Bowman’s Best atomic cards 2017 (Base and Raking Rookies) - 2022 (base) and switched to aqua in 2023. We are also collecting all Sapphire base cards through the years and sets (Topps and Bowman) and one day we hope to complete with a 2017 sapphire rookie. All purely collecting and enjoying the research and hunt to put together a curated set of his career. Separately, any big moments I appreciate the Topps Now which describe the event to someone holding the card. Like Judge’s 62 HR Topps now card. I like the gold foils from Topps. They aren't numbered, but they're actually in lower supply than standard gold cards numbered to the year they come out since they are a Jumbo exclusive. It may have increased recently, but a couple years ago there was somewhere around 650-700 gold foils of each card. Personally, I think they look better than the standard golds, having more of a chrome look. And I think the community will eventually catch on to the fact they are the career parallel.
I've also always liked the Gold Cup cards for second year guys who excelled as rookies. You can find Gold Cups of really good players who debuted over the past 10 years or so, in dollar bins. If we are thinking in the long term, excluding the more recent few years where the print runs have gotten crazy, gold cups might be more profitable in terms of percentage than RCs. The Shohei rookie you pay $50 for now will likely not be more than a couple hundred dollar card in our lifetime. But the gold cup you can buy for about $2 has a decent shot at getting to $25+. So the RC gets you, if it gets to lets say $400 which is an 800% profit, the $2 Gold Cup getting to, lets say $20, gives you 1000% profit.
Lastly, HOF game used relics. Not for value, just for coolness. I have a few I got in group breaks. Biggio, Cepeda, Gossage... With my top 3 being Red Shoedenist (I assume I spelled that wrong), Nolan Ryan and a quad relic of Lou Gehrig /3. Also got a few potential HOF relics in Trout, Judge, Rizzo (not looking likely), Stanton.
If you don't try to find chunky patches or numbered parallels, you can get relics of really great players for under $10. And it is just cool to own. I really don't understand why they aren't more popular with collectors.

Good stuff guys. I understand what what Scottie is saying about buying rookie cards, but many rare cards are just too expensive in the top rookies. Kinda like buying vintage rookies. Sometimes you got to look somewhere else. Generally, I believe Topps makes a better product and has much better images than Panini. That being said, no doubt Panini has done a much better job promoting there case hit inserts than Topps has. When looking at non rookies cards (also non auto), I enjoy the Topps SP (image variations), Homefield Advantage, and the Mood Rings in Bowman product. As a big Heritage guy, the Chrome # 999, Image variation (Nickname as well) and the Black Chrome are also where I look to collect. Until next time...
