HUGE Topps Announcement From The Industry Summit đ€«

- Topps made a few MAJOR announcements this week involving redemptions, basketball cards, and more. In this video the Spitballin' Team shares their thoughts on these hobby changes and announcements.
You guys would fail miserably at repacks because you all have integrity and a deep understanding of the hobby.
Wow - what a great compliment! Thank you!!
đ Appreciate this đđŒ
Agree. Only the flipper types with no ethics would succeed
Just want to say that I look forward to these podcasts every week! Keep up the great discussions!
Thanks for the support! Much appreciated

Awesome show đđ»
Thanks, LuckyPeter!
Excellent show. Quite possibly the best content in the hobby.
Thanks a lot! We really appreciate the support!

@@SpitballinCards My pleasure.
Thank you for watching and for the support!
That Chris sale comment was hilarious đ. Great show guys!!
Thanks for watching!
I send expired ones anyway and get something back. Wether or not its what it was or something close or lately its been real old redemptions that were not claimed. Like 8 9 years old. Even the packs were old
Chris here - we did that recently and got like $10 worth of junk. I guess better than nothing but a disappointment when the redemption was for something good!
@SpitballinCards yeah it definitely seems random. Not every package was great. The way I look at is I have 2 bucks into them. I won't pay more than a dollar. Plua the stamp. Its worth the shot every time. I am surprised they still have such old stuff around.
@@JoeKyser I feel like topps has a Raiders of the Lost Ark style warehouse stocked with unfulfilled redemptions.
@@SpitballinCards right?
Great show
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!!
3:00 he hits the nail on the head
Classic @philmington
âI used to be a capitalist until I joined this hobbyâ đ
đđđ
You didnât even talk about what I think is the most unethical repacker of them all - Arena Club, who grades some of the cards in their own repack, and itâs all done virtually so the possibility of hanky panky with the randomization really makes it like an online casino.
This sounds like an awful setup - isnât Arena the company that Jeter was pimping? Thanks for commenting!
Ugh. Sounds gross.
Harper rookie autos were redemptions as well. Same with a lot of judge rookies
Yep and weâre you as mad as we were when some showed up in 2022 silver packs??
@@SpitballinCards yeah. And whatâs really crazy is I saw Stryker open a box of 2012 topps chrome (I believe). Pulled a black redemption auto of Harper. And sure enough within month or two I saw another person pull the Harper black auto from one of the silver packs. That is seriously the biggest kick in the balls.
Stryker was deff the person that pulled the redemption. I think cheapfun breaks pulled the actual card but I could be wrong on that one. It was deff on CZcams.
I was setting up at the Vegas show two weeks ago, there is actual repacker did what Scott said, he end-up buying Oritz RC and some other odd ball items for his 30 team repack.
Completely agree with the Silver Pack fiasco. People paid a TON of money for 2022 Chrome preorders and the value of that product plummeted with no short prints (and the Wander saga). They screwed the buyers.
They make up for it by giving away some massive cards that belonged to other people, some lifetime pulls for some people Iâm sure. They screwed the redemption pullers.
Just wild how they came to that conclusion as their âsolution.â
I broke a bunch of heavily discounted 22 TC jumbos on Loupe the day before the silver pack announcement
The whole thing left a sour taste đą
Dang. So they screwed you twice. The hobby they want to 10x wonât find healthy growth with this much nonsense going around. This isnât just a hobby, but a business for a lot of people. When people get their wallets and livelihoods toyed with too much, theyâll leave.
@@thekeithy4999 Yep. There's a limit to how much rubbish one can tolerate, even when addicted.
I talked to someone at Topps and they said sets released Jan of 2022 and newer will be apart of the new â10 yearâ policy.
Yep!
Thanks

Topps Stadium club chrome underwear variation proof numbered to 10!
Chris here- whatever this is, Iâm
Buying it!
Excellent content fellas. I appreciate the different perspectives given your individual collecting/selling model. More transparency with Topps/Fanatics should essentially end Panini (that's a good thing I think?), but we'll need an uptick with competition. There's not many options, but I've been really liking the value/design/content with Leaf. Seriously undervalued autos of MAJOR names for 15% value of Topps/Panini.
Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Chris here - I havenât looked at Leaf cards since the mid 1990âs. Iâll check them out.
Thanks for watching!
You guys are awesome. Your content is spot on.
Appreciate the support, thanks for tuning in!
2021/22 Bowman University Football totally benefits from this rule. This will be a smoking hot box with First Rd QBs in the 2023 and 24 drafts
Chris here - I can see Bowman University becoming the first bowman chrome autos for basketball and football.
@@SpitballinCards 100% right on.
Thanks for the great content guys!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Appreciate it!
Kudos for that guy getting his orange Ohtani. You'd be borderline suicidal/homicidal if you didn't get the card. That's a potentially life changing pull. That card is a 6 figure card and possibly a 7 figure card in future. Imagine who gets those Ohtani Bowman Chrome autos that are currently with Fanatics? Rubin might keep a few. A few to other people who are already filthy rich. If I were Rubin I would auction them off and donate the money to a children's hospital. That's what good will and good publicity looks like. Use those Ohtani autos for good.
Chris here - thatâs a great idea!
Can you imagine pulling that redemption card and then topps telling you to kick rocks?!
I think Iâd actually cry.
2018 Bowman Chrome is a tragedy. The product still sells well because of the Ohtani chrome non-auto rookies (also has 1stBowman prospect autos of Alvarez) but his BCA is a redemption and it's arguably his biggest card period as the batting pose of 2018 Bowman Chrome beats out the pitching one from 2018 Bowman.
Indeed you're right. HTA though is the one to stay away from.
Yep! Itâs crazy how much an expired redemption kills the value of a product.
I am assuming that Fanatics doesn't want to be responsible for redemptions the years before they owned it.
I'm not a fan of repacks in general, but don't quite understand why the repackers buying close to comps is a problem? Is the problem with how much they are paying or the fact that the average collector is missing out on buying these cards?
Yeah, Iâm kind of with you here - I wish someone would buy a huge chunk of my cards for near 100% comps! đ€Ł
I think the concern from what Iâve heard is more about people who attend a lot of shows and there is no inventory left for them when they attend as theyâve all been sold to repackers. Ruins their hobby experience.
Chris here - I havenât yet experienced a card show thatâs been âcleaned out.â Iâm not sure what the deal is but maybe Iâll find out at some point.
I feel your pain chris, i had a 2020 stadium club chrome jeter that i pulled nov 7, and the card expired oct 31. I missed it by 7 days and they told me to f off, i didn't get anything. It really sucks, now i hate jeter auto cards.
NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Dude that is horribly painful. It hurt me to read. Iâm so sorry. Goddammit.
Redemptions suck.
@@SpitballinCards yeah, numbered to /5
I think the repack drama is much to do about nothing. Wax has skyrocketing print runs. Repacks give better "guaranteed" floors. This makes easy margins for "proven" repackers, thus giving us more ROI on our singles. I think it helps keep comps more stable, and there's no reason we should be running out of slabs to buy. PSA is grading over 1 million slabs per month. If there's not enough inventory, other markets will be created to meet demand.
Buy the card you want for sure. I really like the Elly Topps rainbow foil card. If u buy more than 1 blaster trying to pull it you've lost
đŻđŻđŻđŻđŻđŻ
So glad it's now 10 years. It's a start but they need to be eliminated. Wish it would've gone back further but at least my stash of 22 and 23 stuff will hold more value going forward for a longer period of time. Repacks are to me just a scam. It's extreme gambling. Just buy singles you want. It's not worth the risk. I'm a collector not a flipper so I'm not interested. Thanks for sharing
Chris here - just buy the card you want!!!!
You've buried the lead. The real story here is whether 'Flippington' managed to offload his stake in Jackson Holliday before he had 8 AB's? Seriously, I have enormous respect for Philmington and his knowledge of the Bowman Chrome market which is why I listened when he said that it's not always a good thing if a player gets called up earlier than expected. You'd think the earlier the better but Phil knows best and he may have been proven right....again! If Holliday had a few more weeks of destroying the minors his cards would've ticked up some and then the anticipation/hype would've been at its maximum when he did get the call up. Well done Phil. I do hope you managed to divest most of your Holliday holdings.
I divested some but not all!
Chris here - Holliday will get another shot this year. The crescendo can start again
This is great but if it still takes forever to get cards back and they give some financial "equivalent" of the actual card you pulled then whats the point.
Good point đ
True - I do wonder how much of the issue is the players just refusing to sign.
I really donât get is Fans/Topps donât just get creative not just repacks but they could try throw in some mech stuff.
Chris here - it does seem like an opportunity
I heard they couldn't convince the kids to work 26 hours per day so we have to wait til 2025 for the new uniforms

I'm not a doom and gloom sort of guy. And i'm often wrong. I thought facebook would go the way of myspace. I do not see FanaticsLive succeeding. No way no how. I sold Lucid at $50 a share. Everyone said it's going to the moon. It's at $5 per share two years later. Rubin is already in desperation mode imo. How they got away blaming Nike is beyond me. The burn rate for FL is tremendous. Breakers like blez are begging folks to break. I can buy the best single out of a product why do a break? Makes no sense. Repacks - until i see dudes bank account i do not for a second believe what is being reported. Who in their right mind announces how well they're doing. Publicly traded stock fanatics? Wall Street will laugh. This industry is no bigger than the my pillow guy. Nope.
Chris here - you hit the mail on the head: buy the single out of a product, why do a break?
Just buy the card you want. Simplify!
Also. Just a heads up. I know you said you rather a redemption then a sticker auto. Thereâs a ton of redemptions that are sticker autosâŠ. Itâs extremely frustrating
Chris here - I saw a couple in chrome update and i COULDNT BELIEVE IT! Unreal. Inexcusable
@@SpitballinCards yeah. Sticker auto redemptions are beyond frustrating. Personally happened to me a few times but just recently with a 2023 chrome update Francisco Alvarez auto. Great looking card but it was a sticker auto.
I rip tons of boxes for myself. And have redeemed 21 autos in the last 12 months. Topps has been really good with turnaround times but still sucks hitting a redemption. Iâve redeemed alot but also have sold just as many as the redemption.
Great point - and it is ABSURD!
Seems to me that this is just a way to keep these big companies investments of wax going up. They buy a ton of product, controlling the market, and hate that the value goes down because the good redemption have expired.
The pants is about gathering dong data.
đđđ
Great username!
Redemptions are awful and should be banned. It's a start by Fanatics but they should be valid for much longer than even 10 years. It's bs that big cards can just be given away to employees as bonuses or walked out the door if they expire when it's not too much bother to keep storing them - especially as there's still sealed wax out there with redemptions. We have a company here in Australia called Select. We're lucky to have such a decent manufacturer. They mostly make Australian football cards these days but they have made cricket and Rugby League cards before. Their redemptions do not have an expiry date. As long as the company exists those cards will be sitting at their warehouse. If I pulled a redemption today from 2001 Select I'm confident it would still be honoured.
Thatâs how it should be. Chris here - Iâd like to see redemptions for numbered cards with the exact number you get. Like I pulled a gold auto, #23/50. So I know card 23 is mine. Regardless of when I pull it.
oh so weâll give you ten years of misery and still not get you your card.
Fck topps
redemptions shud be illegal. You either got the card or you donât..
I agree - redemptions should never expire.
The card belongs to whoever pulls it.
I'm not a fan of the repacks. I think it is gambling and needs to be regulated and transparent. It's a detriment to the hobby...sticker autos, patches from no actual event or game, millions of parallels, repacks...it's all a sign of how people have taken a fun hobby that can potentially be an enjoyable investment if you're smart, lucky, and knowledgeable and turned it into a way to get as much money from other's as possible.
Lo investment. I have fun with the hobby. I donât think the hobby is an investment. The problem seems to be yours either stop thinking an addiction is an investment save your marriage and enjoy collecting cards for fun or just stop and look for a different addiction sorry i meant hobby
@@mauriciobori I said it can POTENTIALLY be an ENJOYABLE investment. Nowhere did I advocate people treat this as a 401K. You sure did make a lot of allegations there though. I don't even rip wax, I buy singles. I find it hilarious that's what you inferred from what I said though.
Repacks are literally gambling. Gambling is supposed to be regulated. I'm not sure what you find so controversial there.
@@mauriciobori I'd like to address the notion of the hobby as purely recreational without the elements of investment and regulation. While it's true that many participate in card collecting purely for enjoyment, there is a significant portion of the community that sees it as a form of investment. This isn't necessarily problematic, provided there is transparency and fairness in transactions.
The issue with repacks and certain industry practices isn't about diminishing the fun or joy of collecting. Rather, it's about ensuring that all participants can make informed decisions, particularly when these packs often resemble gambling more than a straightforward purchase. The concern is that without regulation, the line between gambling and collecting becomes blurred. This can lead to practices that may exploit enthusiasts' passion and investment in the hobby.
Moreover, distinguishing between addiction and investment isn't just about personal discipline or financial management; it's about the structure of the hobby itself. When products are designed to exploit psychological vulnerabilities-like the thrill of 'hitting big' in a repack-there needs to be a discussion about ethics and consumer protection.
Ultimately, whether one views card collecting as a fun activity, a serious investment, or both, what's crucial is that the hobby maintains its integrity and remains enjoyable and fair for everyone involved.
đ€. Iâm not exactly sure how they are even allowed, by the consumer protection agency, to include âredemptionsâ = seems like false advertisement in some senseâŠ. EITHER HAVE THE ITEMS YOUR PROMOTING OR DONT PROMOTE HAVING THEM INCLUDED, period. And there are multiple HORRIFIC redemption card stories out there, just pathetic this stuff is allowed to continue IMO đ». We accept way to many shenanigans now days under the flags of âcapitalismâ IMO = makes for a weak and moral-less nation đđ»
We certainly do just accept a lot of bs from topps/fanatics. They know we just truly love the hobby.
Meanwhile Topps has owed @lsumaniac a Mike Trout 1/1 auto for years now.
Iâve got to believe that they forgot to print/lost certain cards. Iâm waiting on a Trout as well. Heâs signed a bunch of live autos and redemptions since, yet still waiting on cards from years ago to be signed. Nothing else makes sense to me.
@@thekeithy4999thatâs awful I hope you get the Trout at some point. You should message them every day itâs absurd.
That's awful. I forgot about that angle. Expired redemptions is one thing but the agony of waiting years to have one fulfilled and possibly replaced with garbage is another.
