Great drumming, great mic setup, and I understand this is a 3 year old video, but please for future reference, and anyone else out there doing this kinda thing, please don't forget to play the ride cymbal, its kinda important XD Thanks for the tip though :)
Cool video, nice and to the point. Watch out though, the large diaphragm of the re20 isn't what makes it sensitive to LF (1:04). It is a common mic to use on the kick as it's robust to LF transients and won't get as much HF spill due to the capsule size. However, large diaphragm =/= good bass response
less is more, many producers get better drum sounds using fewer mics on popular records today. honestly, i think any more than 4 mics is overkill and causes more problems than it needs to. put a good drummer in a great tuned room with 2-4 halfway decent mics and you're going to track something that sounds nice
Awesome sound. I use a Peavy PV6 Mixer, but I'm new to mixers/mixing and I've got a problem/question, though: When you're hooking them up through the mixer, do you want the toms to each produce a lasting tone coming out of the mixer/speakers? Or are you supposed to use the mixer so that there is no lasting tone coming out of the speakers? If so, Could you recommend the basic settings you'd use on your mixer to get the toms to sound like they do?
IT SOUNDS AMZING! But lets say I wanted to add some reverb to my toms just to make them sound, lets say, "bigger"... Would it be okay to add reverb to the U97's?
Any Suggestions for acoustic treatment when recording drums in small rooms, say a room that's 10 feet by 12 feet? A mix of absorption and diffusion? More of one than the other? My room won't sound as good as yours but any advice would be appreciated. Great videos, thanks!
You forgot to mention the polar patter which you used for the U95 mics. But i suppose it's a cardiod or hyper-cardiod pattern. Omni would have covered much more room. Liking it.
In the final recording, did you pan the 4 mics? I know that this method of micing is quite minimal, but for me it really sounds mono. Or was it stereo indeed and my ears where just punished by the 360°-sorround-tom-fills of recent metal/rock albums???
@SignatureSoundStudio may i also ask, what efffects were put on this track, im going to be tracking my bands drum tracks next week with some akg mics and a few sm57s, any tips for mic positions, and post tracking effects?
i dont just want to know on how to place the mics for recording, i wanna know how can you make a good sound on the drums, like how and were to place the accoustic foam
I find making sure that your OH's are EXACTLY the same distance from the snare and kick makes a huge difference, (the snare sounds out of phase to me when you solo the OH's.) I take a piece of string from the center of the kick to one of the OH's then to the snare, mark the string where it meets the mic. If you don't move the string from the snare or kick you can place the second OH anywhere you want as long as it can be touched with the mark on the string the kick and snare will be in phase.
I have two 2 PG81 instrument mics, one PG52 kick drum mic and three PG56 tom mics. How should I go about micing my kit and what kind of mixer should i use to channel the sounds into?
Any reason those Glyn Johns mics aren't panned? Did this vid just not upload in stereo? Maybe I'm missing something. I love how amazing mics in a great room = great drum sound. Simple as that! Killer stuff. Also, tight drumming! You a session player?
I guess with this set up cymbal placements and simplicity would be pretty crucial, wouldn't it? I have another crash cymbal that set up too close to the mic if I were to do this set up. What would be the remedy to this?
What kind of drum kit is that? It sounds wonderful. Also, I am having a problem with recording toms, I am using a cheapo drum mic kit and am using mounts for the toms instead of having them on stands, I am picking up a bunch of ringy frequencies even though the heads are dampened quite a bit. Should I get seperate stands or am I doing something wrong?
Used 4 today on a 4 piece kit. Best thing is the kit breathed had boom and souded exactly like the did in the room. I play a 20" kik wide open. I set a 57 an " outside the 6" port and got the punchiest bottom air sound and feel. Right in the chest. Proud to say we got a killer all natural drum sound flat eq's 0 effects and BIG AND REAL!
well if i am doing a gig and i want to use the minimum number of mics possible plus i use my cymbals a lot , what would you recommend for me sir...............and i live in INDIA
Well, in 2014 those mics together cost about 3-4k, and that is not including the sound interface. If anybody can tell me replacements for all this mics except the sm57, costing less than $400, I would appreciate it.
I have been using Large diaphragm Sterling st-51 mics as over heads abt $100 a pop and the quality is amazing! I got a vid I just recently posted of them in action
***** Thanks for the help. I just have a standard room that my drumkit is in, so I'm not sure about the sound quality. Still, I'll be looking out for some reputable stores to buy from.
I own the same kit and it happens to be a mid 80s made in Japan Yamaha Tour Series in Garnet Red. The shells are made out of birch and mahoganny with a vinyl wrap. These drums get mistaken for the original Recording Customs because they share the same lug, as well as Tour Customs which have the same shells with similar lugs and a laquered finish. These drums were manufactured by Sakae, as were all of Yamahas upper end drums since 1967. These drums are amazing sounding and record very well.
Great drumming, great mic setup, and I understand this is a 3 year old video, but please for future reference, and anyone else out there doing this kinda thing, please don't forget to play the ride cymbal, its kinda important XD Thanks for the tip though :)
Well, that technique has a name: Glyn Johns!
That kick test at 2:05 made me perk up. Damn that sounds good!!!!!
Alex Rincon same it was awesome
sweet video! you should do another showing how you mixed/eq'd/compressed the drums! keep the videos coming!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video! Well done and insightful.
You should do a tutorial on how to get a u95.
muito bom cara. Perfeito!
thanks Christian!!!! all your videos are amazing and helpfull!!! =)
HOW DO YOU GET SUCH A CLEAN SOUND??? IM USING A SIMILAR SETUP AND THE BLEED IS OVERWHELMING
Yeah muchas gracias! :D thanks for this tutorial!
That sounded good , i recently bought zoom h6, keen to try this mic placements with my shure mics . Were any of those sound mastered/mixed ?
I'm very impressed I'm gonna start doing that now!!!
Sounds great!

Could you show how it's all connected and mixed? How much mixer tracks used?
great video, thanks
I dig it!
Nice sound!
Hey man, don't think anyone has mentioned it, but real nice drumming.
that drum just sounds darn good even without putting a mic on it, thats the key!

in both drum vids the kit looks like not expensive and they sound GREAT.
IT SOUNDS AMZING!

That kick sound great
Sounds good, how much would you the mics roughly cost for all four?
In the final recording, did you pan the 4 mics? I know that this method of micing is quite minimal, but for me it really sounds mono. Or was it stereo indeed and my ears where just punished by the 360°-sorround-tom-fills of recent metal/rock albums???
I like that snare sound. Is that a rogers?? Compressed to tape??
If I were to use a Beta 52 instead of the RE20 on the kick would I position the mic the same way or differently?
@SignatureSoundStudio awesome!! thanks a lot!! =D
Great!
You r very educational friendly. T.Y.
@SignatureSoundStudio may i also ask, what efffects were put on this track, im going to be tracking my bands drum tracks next week with some akg mics and a few sm57s, any tips for mic positions, and post tracking effects?
"inexpensive"
i dont just want to know on how to place the mics for recording, i wanna know how can you make a good sound on the drums, like how and were to place the accoustic foam
what polar pattern are those U95's set on? would a pair of cardioid condensers work well with this same set up?
i love your vids btw!! =D

are there any suitable substitutes for the overheads besides the Soundelux mics that will do a decent job, yet don't cost as much?
I have two 2 PG81 instrument mics, one PG52 kick drum mic and three PG56 tom mics. How should I go about micing my kit and what kind of mixer should i use to channel the sounds into?
This sounds amazing. I'm having trouble getting even close to this sound with 3 mics. Have your tracks been compressed and eq'd at all or is this raw?
3 mics, man that's going to be a tough one to get a good drum sound
Would a setup similar to this work on an outdoor live situation? That's considering there will be a lot of noise. Thanks
what kind of mic do you have on your face? and you do have it connected directly to your camera?
Any reason those Glyn Johns mics aren't panned? Did this vid just not upload in stereo? Maybe I'm missing something. I love how amazing mics in a great room = great drum sound. Simple as that! Killer stuff. Also, tight drumming! You a session player?

NIce!

Yamaha Tour Series from mid 80s

is there a budget mic set up video?
awesome! :D
Kit sounds great!!! Only 4 mics too!!!!
Hi great videos, could any body tell me some budget overhead mics? thanks alot :)
Can I plug a microphone into an instrument input? because I have an interface with 2 instruments inputs and 2 mic inputs. Thanks!
what r your thoughts on using convulstion reverb instead of room mics and how clearly can those toms be heard
i appreciate the reply i love this method of micing
i think it can be pretty enough for jazz and slow styles
Hello.. How do you get such a high damped drum heads? unlike mine. thanks for replying ;)
@poshi12 I believe there is a similar method, the Glyn John's method, and that's the one they are using in the video
well if i am doing a gig and i want to use the minimum number of mics possible plus i use my cymbals a lot , what would you recommend for me sir...............and i live in INDIA
would have been nice to hear the ride... I've heard that the position of the tom mic can cause issues with the ride cymbal... otherwise, great demo.
God bless Glyn Johns!
What is the mic stand for the overhead?
Hi..one question.. which kind of preamps did you use?
the kick mic sounded so good that it could be mistaken for a drum sample
If I record a drum and I want a gate on it... how do I put that on it? with hardware or software??
Do all 4 mics need phantom power or just the over head mics?
Cæsar Just the condensers Mics
you look a tiny bit like dave grohl with straighter hair... brilliant video by the way
Well, in 2014 those mics together cost about 3-4k, and that is not including the sound interface. If anybody can tell me replacements for all this mics except the sm57, costing less than $400, I would appreciate it.
jgarec88 Thanks for the help
I'm a big fan of AKG Perception 170s for overheads!
+Pro Studio Live can you take away the oh on the far right and mic the high hat instead? and leaving the top oh?
how motch does it cost for the 4 mices ?
cool...
i wish i could borrow some mics and try them for like a month or something before i buy them for expensive money..
What kinda drum kit is that?
Old Yamaha Recording I believe..

friend can help me with my recording studio I have some mail from Venezuela
Honestly I feel this sounded more "natural" then the 11 mics on the kit in room A.
I think that he is using compression in all channels, so this maybe not the sound of the rough record!
You $h#ttin me, that i$ dope, kapitol D.
It would have been nice if you had shown how it sounds when the overheads were panned to stereo.
Stereo image is not good though. Maybe it's mono?
Why didn't you pan the overheads?
Basically Glyn Johns method. This is how he mic’d Bonhams Kit.
I don't think he mentioned that all those mics and drum were pre-EQ'd and tested before shooting this video.
are the U95s panned?
I don't think they are in the video but I would when mixing it.
what brand drumset it that?
Mid 80s Yamaha Tour Series
nice pillow in the bass (@) (@)
not bad
Glyn Johns needs credit
Most famously known as the Glyn Johns technique
Sounds reasonable lol
check it out, if it sounds good it is okay
if it sounds not good it isn´t okay
The SM57s are only like 100 euro/pcs or somthing.
If you know what you are doing four mics should be more than enough!
A Glyn Jones?
4mic? I have a suggestion sell the the RE20 and buy a 7 piece mic drums hahahahaa
Hahaha who doesn't Peace... I learn a lot from you guys
Quality not quantity is always good with all things music, I feel.
ya ya schnel neumann!
How much did it cost you guys to get Dave Grohl in to do this video? :P
Dude seriously looks like him
press 8 repeatedly xD
this guy looks a little bit like Dave Grohl.
It would have been nice if you had shown how it sounds when the overheads were panned to stereo.
