  • Weighted blankets are supposed to help with restlessness, anxiety and sleep. Originally developed for people with special needs, like autism, they are becoming more and more mainstream. They can get pretty pricey, but thankfully making your own is fairly straightforward.
    I was overly ambitious and made the compartments for the filling beads really small, but you can get away with much bigger ones. That will save you a lot of time. You also don't need to make a quilt top, you can easily use plain fabric and get the same functionality.

    Just a note, for adults and non-special needs children, just 10% of body weight is fine. But when making for a special needs child(my youngest is one..this is how I know, thanks to his therapist), you need to use 10% of body weight, then add 1 to that number. As your child grows, you need to make adjustments to the weight of their blanket. :)
    I've made a few, and would highly recommend making weighted tubes, to insert into the blanket channels! So much easier! :)

      Thanks for the info! Making weighted tubes sounds like a great trick!!

      @@CraftsWithEllen I was having sympathy pains with you, watching you sew the blocks! I felt every ache and pain, bc I did the SAME my very first one, except mine was the size of a toddler bed size! I can only imagine having to do one that way, adult sized! I enjoy watching all of you videos! I can't wait to make my own jeans!! 🤗😍

    So many flashbacks to when I made my weighted blanket (though I cheated and used a shop bought duvet cover instead of making a quilt from scratch). You managed to stay out of the hospital though so kudos for that.

      Did you use batting as well? I'm about to start making one using a duvet cover, but I'm on the fence if I want to use batting!

    Way to “get back on the horse” and finish a difficult project Ellen! I’ve got a garage full of those - maybe now is the time to dust them off and get them completed!

    Making weighted tubes to insert definitely sounds like the easier way to go.

    • @CraftsWithEllen
      @CraftsWithEllen  Před 11 měsíci

      I put them between the bottom and inner. That way the seam allowances from the top don't obstruct the flow of the beads :)

    I don't know if I've ever used a weighted blanket before. I think once, when I was a kid, but I didn't like it. But now learning over the past while, there's weight limits, or designs for each person. I can sorta figure out, why I didn't like it. I'd like to try again someday. A GREAT video, Ms. Ellen. Thank you for your creative endeavours. Also, I hope you and your family are doing well, in this weird time.

    I've learnt three things - how to make a weighted blanket, we start writing our 8's in different places (3:47) and that the 'hang in there' motivational poster should be a picture of this project!

    Nice one Ellen! We bought a weighted blanket a while ago, but didn't know about the 10% rule of thumb and ended up getting one that was too heavy for both of us. Now the blanket sits in the dark depths of our house. G

    • @CraftsWithEllen
      @CraftsWithEllen  Před 3 lety

      I tend to use it on top of my normal blanket, so it doesn't really get dirty or sweaty. But if I do need to wash it, I'll do it by hand in a tub. I don't think my machine would handle the weight well.
