In the original video I wasn't able to get the final timeline to render on the test PC. However, after several days of research and tinkering I was able to get it to work. I had to disable Resizable BAR support in the UEFI, and enable Smart cache rendering in Resolve. The final render did finish faster than the M2 Pro Mac Mini however I did have to wait over 20 minutes for the timeline to cache first so realistically it was twice as long to output the final product. I think ReBAR was just allowing the VRAM to be flooded with too much data all at once.

I may be missing something, but I always see videos that compare performance at the same price. I never see a data point showing the minimum price point to achieve the same results from both systems. This is the information I am always looking for in a comparison video but never find.

While I still think Apple products are $200 to $500 over-priced, I did get one. I have the M2 Pro Mac Mini at based $1299.99. 10 CPU cores, 19 GPU cores, 16GB ram, and 512GB SSD. It's super fast, it's ideal. Mac OS software is the best part. Time machine always works and backs up 100% of my files. iMovie always works and is super easy to use. Photo booth is also very easy to use. I also use notes to remind me of things and have it open at start up. Tons of great apps that Windows has nothing like them at all. There is no backup software on windows that's as easy to use as time machine.

Mac Studio all the way. I do think a little too much is made about fan usage though. it's not a slight on a Mac if the fan comes on. mines only come on once the entire time I've had mine; guess what? I was recording vocals and my Mic didn't pick up a single thing. real world usage. musicians record talking volume or louder. a zero factor the fan coming on

Michael, do not worry: A new version of the Mac Studio with the "M2 Ultra" chip is unlikely to arrive in the near future, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman explained that since the upcoming Apple silicon Mac Pro is "very similar in functionality to the Mac Studio," Apple may wait until the release of M3- or M4-series chips to update the machine, or simply never refresh the device at all:
„I wouldn't anticipate the introduction of a Mac Studio in the near future. The upcoming Mac Pro is very similar in functionality to the Mac Studio - and adds the M2 Ultra chip rather than the M1 Ultra. So it wouldn't make sense for Apple to offer an M2 Ultra Mac Studio and M2 Ultra Mac Pro at the same time. It's more likely that Apple either never updates the Mac Studio or holds off until the M3 or M4 generation. At that point, the company may be able to better differentiate the Mac Studio from the Mac Pro.“ (quote by Mark Gurman)
To date, little has been rumored about the next-generation Mac Studio, so Gurman's latest remarks are the firmest indication yet that a new version of the machine is unlikely to arrive any time soon.
Last month, it emerged that Apple reportedly scaled back its plans for the first Apple silicon Mac Pro, scrapping the "M2 Extreme" chip and falling back on non-user-upgradable memory and the same design as the 2019 model. The device is now expected to offer the M2 Ultra only - a chip that would also have logically come to the next-generation Mac Studio.
The M2 Ultra chip is almost certain to double-up the capabilities of the recently introduced M2 Max chip, which is currently only available in the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro. With reduced modularity and similar performance on the upcoming Mac Pro, Apple's move to hold off on updating the Mac Studio's hardware may make sense until it can work out a better strategy for the machine's positioning going forward.

Hey there. Thanks for your in-depth look at the different use cases.
Did you feel 64GB of your M1 helped with RAM preview speeds and durationin AE? The 32GB of the M2 seems quite low when it comes to it (coming from a PC with 64GB). And what would you say about the trapcode suite and the M1's extra GPUs. Does the extra RAM + GPUs help the M1 enough to justify a buy of older hardware?

As a pro photographer and valuing roi, I watt to keep my system for a good 5 years. So with that, I'm probably going with the Mac Studio. I just haven't decided on the Max or Ultra. I think the Ultra may be worth the extra $1400 if it gives me an extra 2 years of useable life. Maybe.

Hi! I primarily use After Effects for rigging and animating many layers, sometimes high res. As much as shorter render times are a blessing I am more concerned about viewport playback and timeline scrubbing, so I can manually view my animations. I was considering the Mac Mini M2 Pro, with upgraded processor, 32GB memory and possibly a 4TB SSD. With these added costs would I be better purchasing the base Mac Studio, which still costs a lot more?

  • @deoccultist
    @deoccultist Před 10 měsíci

I think for a pro digital artist who uses Photoshop, the M2 Pro (with only 16gb RAM) is beyond sufficient. I was originally going for the Mac Studio, but I don't do any 4K editing, nor do I have half a dozen apps running. The most I have open is Photoshop and Brave Browser with Nord VPN running. The M2 Pro makes 16 GB of RAM feel like more. And you can find refurbished ones from Apple for a few hundred dollars less, often with extra ram, SSD size, or 10GB ethernet. If you have a heavy workload, the Studio is best. If all you need is one primary creative app running, the M2 Pro is enough.

If Mac Mini M2 base model was 16GB/512GB, and they kept the last year price (+100$), they would sell so much of them, they would not be able to produce enough

I eventually want to get a new MacBook Pro but probably in 2-3 years when I plan to actually travel. In the mean time I am wondering which one of these would be best for me. I always have multiple chrome tabs open. I think the base model mac mini seems too under powered and will become obsolete within 3 years. Maybe I should just buy a new MacBook PRo now and use it and a desktop. Too bad if that's the case because I wanted something to fill the next 2 years at least so I could wait for the M4 of whatever is coming and also that will be when I plan to travel and will need the portability.

i'm actually in the same debate. i have 2017 macbook pro 16G 2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7.
i'm a photographer, musician (electro music) and photographer - using it for lightroom, photoshop, luminar, davinci simple video editing, and also music production with vsts.
currently i need to close off programs work properly - and i still have lags and slowness.
not sure if the best option for me is the M1 Studio 32G or 64G (10c CPU 32c GPU) or the Mini with M2 pro 32G 10 or 12c CPU 19c GPU.
    - will the 32G be enough or do i need the 64G?
    - which will be faster - youtubers finds that in some ways the m2 is faster, in others the m1 is. both will be much faster than what i currently have.
    WDYT?

Purchased this configuration after a lot of research. The "bang for the buck" is pretty good. Thought about 1 TB storage upgrade, but it is too expensive. I will settle for external storage which also gives me multiple copies. Upgrade to 32 gb unified memory likewise regrettably expensive. Figure out what you need given your workflow, then upgrade that some for longevity. I was going to get the M2 mini 16gb/512 gb storage, but decided the Pro will enable me to keep it a year or two longer.

Computers have limited lifetimes. Apple made the decision some time ago that user upgrades can introduce lots of problems. So a "walled garden" which some like and some detest. @@larrycrockett1356 bad analogy as cars can be upgraded and serviced by independent repair shops over a lifetime.
Computers don't have limited lifetimes that's a lie in most cases with upgradeable ones, they want you to believe and need you to believe they do to continue to sell you a newer and faster one .
In fact old computers are needed and wanted all over the world.
Now yes they do not thave the newer 4 k8k video editing and power to handle newer games 3d ai and other apps or the by design newer os made specifically to leave the old ones behind and to end support for them, when often they are faster and more capable then some of the newer ones because of upgradability to ram internal storage GPU egpu ports.
      Not always but often.
We saw this when upgradeable Mac pros were end of life no support and slower non upgradeable MacBook airs no where near as powerful but new got full support.
Good thing Linux exist for man mac's and PCs this proves they are useful you can also make a chrome book.
In some cases they perform better now then with the old os
It is exactly the non upgradeable machines that by definition have the most limited lifetimes and repairability adding to ewaste as they are always timestamped by their date and factory build specs.
.once that memory or storage goes the machine is effectively bricked for good in many cases wasting all the other parts as even screen speakers and ports are now being locked to one cpu machine for life.
It is the worst thing to happen in the computer space to consumers in a chase for more profit limited lifespans and no repairability and more ewaste.
Sad to see many promoting it because of brand loyalty and don't get me wrong Microsoft too is guilty of the same tactics.

So that all depends if you plan to have several plus tabs open. If your don't plan on multitasking then you could just get the base model with 256ssd and 8gb ram. But if you do, then upgrade the ram or the ssd for the the longevity. The problem with getting just the 8gb ram and 256 ssd is that what will happen, if you start using more than the 8gb ram, the mac will start using the ssd as vram, which in turn will kill the life span of the mac. So if you do want it to last 5 plus years with no worries at all then I would upgrade the ram to 16gb and to save money I'd buy an external ssd, you can get a 1TB ssd for like 100 (supper fast one)

Logic Pro is very well optimized for Apple Silicone, however, it is still CPU speed and memory intensive, so the faster M2 Pro will perform better, and the more memory you have the more you can do. With that said it depends on your definition of "Heavy Duty". I ran Logic Pro projects with up to 36 tracks, with multiple instruments, effects, and plug-ins on the M2 Pro base model with no issues but I'm not a Logic Pro user or expert. More VSTs are starting to leverage using GPUs vs outboard/dedicated hardware which the Mac Studio would excel at - also saw several demos with ProTools Studio M1 Native (beta version) running on a Mac Mini M2 Pro with 430 tracks - no issues. Either Mac would be more than capable - 32GB RAM would be great for large sample libraries that must be loaded into RAM vs streaming. Just depends on your workflow / requirements. The fact that since 2016, Apple has been soldering the SSDs onto the Mac motherboards is an Absolute Abomination.
On top of that they also overcharge 4x the price per TeraByte.
ON TOP OF ALL THAT. When your SSD fails you (and it will eventually), when you go to apple for a repair/replacement you'll find out the way that Apple chooses to go about this "repair". They will replace your whole MOTHERBOARd with ALL components on it just because your SSD failed. aaaaand.... it will Cost you at least 50% of what you paid for that Apple machine.
