Today I'm reviewing band I somehow have never heard of before, Static X, with their new song Otsego Placebo. It's some mix of industrial, ne metal and dance I think...what do you think the appeal is?

Name suggestion... Dangle... or little 'bo' dangles... bo... as in rainbow.
If he sways to something lame... you could express your disdain w a dry, facetious... "Ok, Dangle..."
Hi Justin 👋 i will be at your hayes show for my sisters birthday if possible could you give a happy birthday shout out to Kim she will be so amazed lol xxx
How about 'Lil' Rooster' for your little friend! 😁
what do you do on stage?
Oh no! You should definitely check out Static-X's older material they did with original band leader Wayne Static who unfortunately passed away in 2014. Basically the masked guy you mentioned is named Xer0 and is meant to be some kind of creepy robotic replacement of Wayne (but is actaully Edsel Dope of the band... Dope).
Most of the songs on the project regeneration albums are Wayne singing, a few with Edsel but mostly tracks built sound Wayne’s demo vocals.
Ahhh, that makes sense. I knew I didn't like him for some reason, and it was definitely because I didn't like Dope back in the day
He's to old.
Nah, he's just meant to be a mascot. Edsel dope just happens to be wearing the costume.
Duh. Everyone knows this
Wisconsin death trip era was great
Shadowzone was wall to wall bangers IMO
First 2 albums were good but Death Trip is the ultra classic.
For me it was Machine, Wisconsin Death Trip then Shadow Zone... But yeah, you could put those three in any order and I wouldn't complain, all brilliant@@JackXombi
Lmao I live in Wisconsin, and I used to think that song was about how terrible Wisconsin is 😂😂😂 (I was like six when I found the song lmao)
I seen them at Ozzfest 2000.......I miss Wayne
I just miss Wayne Static, RIP Original singer
No shade to "the new guy", but ditto.
i still want xeros ml. that arctic white looks SICK
Me too.
He was awesome. I know the guitar is very basic but he just nailed the crunch and was solid! really cool style. I like watching Cannibal Killers when he put a magnet is his beard... then his beard was floating towards the mike stand lol
Same. 👍🏽❤️💪🏽
My suggestion for the name of the plush toy is: Puffin Hawkins Flies Again
🤣🤣🤣
I haven't heard of every artist in every genre, but Static-X was big enough when you were first coming out that I'm surprised you don't know them already.
So surprised. I’m a norm-core nerd who only got into metal 3 years ago but even I know (& love) their (earlier) music.
@@Celeste-in-Ozyou're a what?
@@jessemccann9711 apparently it’s not hyphenated, but here’s how ChatGPT sums it up, (very well I might add) …“normcore” is a fashion trend or style characterized by deliberately adopting clothing and accessories that are considered bland, ordinary, or “normal.”
Yeah that got me as well. I text my brother, who recommended me this video and replied... "Surprised Justin had never heard of Static-X, I guess he was busy with other stuff" lol
Black and White was all over Kerrang and their music channel back in the early 00's. It's hard to imagine a guy in the music biz avoiding even hearing them in passing.
@@kevinwilson455 I guess we all have our blind spots.
Otsego Placebo came out on July 2020...on every Static X album there is a song about Otsego because it's the city where Wayne grew up...nothing negative to say about this band and even about what they do know without Wayne...killer music! I don't even know if there is any bad songs since the beginning! Tony Campos played with Ministry, now Fear Factory and of course Static X...🤘🤘🤘 You're free to like it or not...😉
I wondered who they got to replace Byron after laughably replacing Gene Hoglan with a computer.
Hope he gets treated better than they did. Band never sounded better than Powershifter.
@@rocketpigrecords3719 they got rid of Gene f*^***n Hoglan?
@@rocketpigrecords3719 Huh?
@@RowdyYates12 for awhile Fear Factory basically ported over Strapping Young Lad's rhythm section, Byron Stroud & Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan.
Gene is a legend. He taught Lombardo double bass. Played in Death. Amongst others.
Raymond Herrera has always been a bit of a hack, but when you compare the two, they're not in the same league at all.
So, what does Dino "Cocaine Is A Powerful Drug" Cazeres think is a good idea? Take maybe the best metal drummer alive, sideline him for EZ Drummer on the album (no royalties or studio pay), & expect him to play those songs on tour now.
Snoooorrrrrttttt...."GOD DAMN, that's a good idea!"
Wayne is actually from Muskegon Michigan a little town about 40 minutes north of where I live. Oswego is the county Muskegon is in but that's a cool thing they did
Edsel does an amazing job of keeping the original sound. Such an awesome band
I just seen them Wednesday. Edsel is doing double duties on this tour. His band dope is opening act and then sevendust and then he comes out as xero and sings for static x. Amazing
No he's not. He's just a rat.
06:14 😂😂😂😂 the Gollum singing 😂😂😂😂
😂
I was thinking the same thing 😂
Ditto - Andy Sirkis' probably under that mask screaming his heart out as Gollum.
Name that chicken suggestion: Justine Squawking 🐔
Found this band a couple of years ago. Wisconsin Death Trip is an amazing album. Totally gutted when I realised that Wayne had passed away. The new album with the masked singer is amazing and I'm glad they've carried on the way they have. Also, name that dangling creature Cuthbert, I don't know why! Luv your vids Squire!!
Dave Hasselfluff!
It has got the same piercing blue eyed gaze 😂
@@ZuzuTheLemon Ha ha, right, and kinda the same hair minus the color 😂
@@MariaFrancesca I also like David Flufflehoff for a variation
As long as he can be David Hasselhoff's little bro 😀
@@MariaFrancesca It's David Hasselhoff's Cock!🐔...
OK, bye...🫣😅
"Boom-chicka" comes to mind for that oddly spherical chicken....
Nice to see the mention of Ministry, one of the best bands ever, imo. Al Jourgensen is a legend & a musical god. I love their new stuff but The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste &
Psalm 69 are sheer perfection.
I first heard Ministry when Just One Fix was on the soundtrack of Álex de la Iglesia's 2nd film as writer-director, the black Satanic comedy El Día de la Bestia (The Day of the Beast). I highly recommend the film, it's crazy, funny, dark, irrelogious & has an amazing soundtrack of old-school metal & industrial, such as Ministry, Pantera, Def Con Dos, Sugar Ray & the best & sadly-missed gothic rock band Parálasis Permanente.
The HOFF is back from Aussieland! 🤣🤣🤣 He looks so smug! Love your content.
What was cool about that first wave of industrial was the use of the crude samplers 8 or twelve bits, and the use of power tools, like the drill in Thieves by Ministry. Also, don't think digital recording was as ubiquitous and as accessible on a computer as it is now. Seem to remember Scott (or Klayton as he is now known) using ADATs on those early Circle of Dust records and then transferring them to tape but saving the ADAT stuff for the live show And as far as DAWs were concerned Masaki Liu had a crude version of ProTools on and old Apple computer when we were working on the Jesus Freaks EP but it was closer to Audacity in that it was really only useful for editing the two track mixes.
Lets not forget the Atari falcon! 8 tracks! We had a Studer dyaxis and soundscape next to the tape machines, followed by an Otari RADAR, then Protools. I went feelance in 2000 and have been fully dig. eversince.
The availability of affordable drum machines and Tascams is more of what drove the 80s stuff. You could write & demo an album by yourself in an apartment vs trying to bribe some whore of a drummer before getting evicted.
But if he's talking NIN and the 90s, it gets more and more accurate.
I had the big goofy HR16, the SR16's predecessor. Easier to do industrial on that thing than not, lol. Gave it to a rivethead friend of mine.
The song is not my favourite thing but i love your roll play of it! 😂
The little animal hanging by your micro, you could call him "Gallus"
Love it when you feature metal bands! Love the channel! 🤘
You sure have the right "need an exorcist promptly" kind of singing for it! 😀
I went to see Korn at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2002(ish) I got there early and ended up front and center right next to the stage. I wasn't overly interested in the support band because I didn't really know who they were. They were a little band going by the name Static X.... Well Wayne (RIP) Jumped on the stage with the energy of an Atom bomb!! Before I even knew what happened, I was about 25 rows back and wondering what the heck just happened. Wayne quickly made me know exactly who Static X were. And Korn were obviously awesome also. It's the best show I ever saw! Loved them ever since.
All of that said, I do quite like this recent resurgence with their "Zombie Wayne" lead singer. Zombie being a decent song actually, but if you're going to do a video on who Static X are, you should probably go back and look at the original stiff with Wayne. "Black and white" is probably my favorite track, "The only" is the one that most people might be familiar with. Wayne died way too young! But his music will live on....
You nailed it...."there's no school like the old school" cheers from Canada
Been a long-time fan of this band, but the song to listen to is Dead Souls (which Al from Ministry guest stars on). It is very danceable though; they were heavily influenced by Ministry and Wayne played his guitar like a percussive instrument on purpose. The masked man is Edsel Dope from Dope.
In Hay Day the chicken is called Chick Norris 😂👍
"the riffery" 😂i freakin' love you, ma.🤘🤘
I read this comment at the exact moment he said it haha
I do believe that’s a chicken. He looks grumpy. Can I suggest Drumstick? As a nod both to his tastiness and music
Thoroughly enjoyed your Gollum impression ❤😂
Seems like more show. Not a fan of the screaming with no melody but that is likely because I’m old. As long as the guys are having fun, more power to them!
I always enjoy it when you do the demonic hairball noise!
You do almost expect something to come up 😂
@@MariaFrancesca I hope that's not where the fluffy bird thing really came from 😆
@@ZuzuTheLemon LOL Oh no! 😂 Let's hope we don't have to name him Intenstinal Villus 😉 Figures though, that even the things he coughs up would be adorable 😂
@@ZuzuTheLemon, Fluffy was a gift from Justin’s daughter.
@@SuziQ. I know, I just jest ❤
So much love and appreciation for your music and dedication to spreading awareness of other musicians :)
I thought your little friend was a chicken, in which case he could be Chick Astley or Chick Berry... Then I gave up 😁
Chick Biscuits.
Chick Manson (he was a musician!)
Little fluffy bird names: "Chicken Little" (from "Livin' on the Edge", by Aerosmith), "Henny Hendrix", or "Baby Hawk"

I cant wait to hear the unplugged acoustic version of this song
lol
😂😂😂
Moose. And thank you for always being amazing.. knowledgeable and witty.. always fun to watch!
"Blissfully drinking in the riffary" - That's a t-shirt
call it “Clucks”
then u can use it as a grading system too:
“I don’t give 2 flying Clucks”, etc…
The same grading system works with “Fluffy”:
“I don’t give a Fluff.” 😂
first time i saw them was decades ago warming up korn tour. awesome band. I heard you say "static eggs" every time :D
Not my bag baby
Xer0 is a faceless stage persona on purpose to preserve the legacy of Wayne Static. Static - X is basically a tribute band now, a way to let the band live on because Wayne Static can never be replaced.
Edsel pretty much said himself "i don't want to be the frontman of static x that's wayne's job"
@@lewisb85 Don't think for a second that the band members didn't hire him with that in mind.
thats Edsel DOpe from Dope as Xero doing a bang up job for em honoring Waynes passing in the new tour of old songs. I loved So cold from the Korn collab in that vampire movie. This song was yeah dance like a weird techno bit. I am amazed Edsel plays Dope THEN Static X full sets. I love many of their songs, not all of em, never really love bands myself except the aquabats cause for some reason that band resonated with me and helped me stop thinking self harm thoughts, which is why I stopped listening to Static X, Lillies and remains who dropped a new vid recently , and NIN, bad choice when in a sad mood for me.
I've got all Static-X's shit on my Ipod since the early 00's... They are so crunchingly heavy it's unreal, but with a dance/industrial element. Their samples are hilarious. If you listen with earphones a lot of their electronic stuff shines through.
They recorded all their stuff with drum machines, and then added guitar in after. The drummer is just playing along to the electronic beat.
Seen Static-X at the Machine Shop before Wayne passed away and they put on a killer show. You need to listen to their earlier stuff
Awesome mask and effects gives great ambience love the vibe
When I was young we did not listen to Static X for pleasure or leisure. We listened to them when we were in the weeds in the kitchen and us line cooks needed an ass kicker of a soundtrack!
The bird looks like a Jason Hawkwind 😉
08:28 I find this aspect very cool too in many bands. Kiss in a sort of way were the pioneers, but also Misfits, Slipknot, Lordi, Ghost, Sleep Token...are some names that come to my mind
Nice one!!! 👍❤
I just seen static x, sevendust and dope Wednesday in Columbus OH and it was phenomenal
Static X is a killer band!! Listened to them 20+ years ago in high school and still am. I think Edsel is doing an amazing job filling in for Wayne.
Damn man, you're still in high school after 20 years?
Haha!!
Tha name for you little creature?.😂😂😂Must be "loki"..😂😂😂
It’s a bit like My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. They used synths and samplers and house beats with themes of debauchery and satanism. Heavy guitars too.
Edsel Dope is an amazing musician who can play every rock instrument pro-level, composer, arranger, performer, dude’s a great talent for real, Justin. You rule
he also has a SICk signature guitar dean just needs to release already
definitely check out their earlier work, Wisconsin Death Trip is a friggin banger of an album from the start to the end. i love how they're keepin the spirit of Static-X alive, GNU Wayne
Mike Bird, the bird on a mike 😊
00:22 as I suggested in the last video, my proposal is:
FLYING B (the B is for Bird😂)
Hey Justin, great show as always, my daughter is calling your little creature Chickenry, since he looks like a chicken and Henry her friend!.
Thanks for cheering up my day Justin😊 Your daughter’s chicken friend should undoubtedly be named Richard as it is always your go to name according to Jenny😂
Way to call out Ministry sir. You have good taste. “So what” is still on my gym workout playlist 😂
Ministry is great, but I am more enamored with Prong.
@@scottmcley5111how about a little pitchshifter
@cassieeatscockroaches999 Had a friend waay back mid 90s play a pitch shifter album for me, and I remember it being good, just can't remember at all what album or even what they sound like. But I will dig back in and check some out. 👍
@@scottmcley5111 I did a prong cover, might upload it
🤣"jive bunny"😂
Yea ok.... point to you hawkins, i laughed @ that.
Ooohhhh, lol........ jive bunny 😂
Brutal......
The original lead singer, Wayne Static, passed in 2014. Currently it's Xer0 (Edsel Dope of the band Dope) handling lead vocals. He uses the mask/persona onstage to separate himself as Edsel while playing with Static X. Initially they weren't revealing who Xer0 was, but enough people figured it out based on the vocals that he came forward.
Love the Hoff. Use him in birthday cards as much as poss lol. Class!! Call your daughters little bird "Huff" 🥳
Lol. Yoy said Paul Hardcastle and I started singing " nuh nuh nuh nuh NINETEEN!"
And then thought of Kraftwork and Throbbing Gristle.
What headphones are you using?
wow, that was fast, Hoff is back :)
You sounded like Huey , luey and duey Donald ducks nephews 🤣🤣🤣
The bird looks like a little chicken. You should name it Chick Jagger.
Also, would love a video on the band The Vaccines.
OMG Chick Jagger! YES.
The lead singer "Zero" is Edsal Dope from the band dope. Although Static X will not come out and admit it, they don't try to hide it either. They do this so their deceased original lead singer, rhythm guitarist, and founding member Wayne Static is never truly replaced, and is always honored during their performance.
Yes, this is why Edsel never admitted to it being him. He wants no attention for it. The spelling is Xer0. It's bordering Wayne 2.0 and Static X.
I’m hearing you on tv right now. I believe in a thing called love is playing on the NHL Winter classic
I've loved Static-X since high school so I'm glad you can appreciate what they do. It scratches all the itches.
Name suggestion: dustin Hawklings.
Should think about a cut-out Sam Ryder, he seems to pop up everywhere in rock these days (eg singing with Enter Shikari on their current UK tour). Chick plush toy is clearly an eyas, I would have thought. Static-X are industrial metal pioneers, though their lineup has changed significantly over the years. I think there was a period in the '90s when electro-industrial came about with a heavy synth feel and distorted guitars. That is not actually EDM.
I am finding it a bit early fear factory. I enjoyed it very much. I also never thought i would hear you mention jive bunny
Was fortunate to see Static-X live twice in 2007 with Wayne. Both shows were life changing for me. Just recently saw them 02/28/24. Was completely blown away by the whole performance!
The man behind the mask is Edsel Dope, the lead vocalist of the band Dope. If I remember right, he likes the concept and anonymity that Xer0 provides
I crease up with laughter listening to Justin mimic the vocals…he must do a song using these vocals in the Darkness for a laugh😂
Hey Justin. For us ppl that are always looking for music to add to our collection, you should give us a list of your favourite industrial artists/songs….please. Thanks for the great videeos BTW.
name suggestion for friend in the lower corner: PV Knob (they look peeved, Peavey amps are classic RnR, knobs on amps)
Your fluffy critter has a tag on it. Are they called Nici? Fluffy Nici sounds like a death metal singer's name to me haha
Their main influences are nine inch nails, ministry and the crystal method, thing I find funny with the industrial thing is delerium (the trance band) sell more records than front line assembly which is the main band they are a side project of.
Almost everything you wrote is wrong. I want you to know that.
Its a Chircle. Kinda like a Chicken, but also a Circle.
Jive Bunny name-dropped! Deep cut there, brother.
TY for bringing back the Hass!!!
Wisconsin Death Trip (their debut album) is a masterpiece.
The original frontman that the band is actually named after is Wayne static and he passed away The guy singing now is Nero
\\m// EVIL DISCO GOES HARD \\m// R.I.P Wayne
I honestly haven't kept up with StaticX since the passing of Wayne. Sound leaning more in to the Rammstein style Euro industrial sound. Hm. Prefer the older stuff but, eh, I kinda like this.
Cute dangling mascot name? The Larkness
. . . And my music education continues - thanks to you Justin. I watched Wayne Static answering questions in a video with his wife. He explained that his voice was done in the studio using two tracks layered - a whispering one and a screaming one. He then goes on to say he tries his best to recreate that live - but I'm not sure whether he ever achieved that.
The bird it looks like a snowball to me so I'd call it Snowball. 😊
Justin, please do an episode about Extreme. Their beginning, their rise in the 90's, the hit that sent them into the limelight, the fall, your thoughts of Nuno and their comeback. Please Justin. I love Extreme! Love you too!
I only know a couple staticX songs from probably the early 2000's....but they were really badass. Push it' was a song that never gets old
Only band that has their singer perform as the ghost of their old singer. RIP, Wayne.
Glad they're still going and staying true to their vision.
Mr. Hasselhoff back into the bad behaviour corner... 🤣🤣🤣
Haven't really listened to much of their stuff since Wayne died, but for me the golden era was Shadow Zone & Start a War. If I fancy some industrial metal of this rough variation, then one of those comes out. They just have a groove that few bands could ever match, particularly on songs like Kill Your Idols, relatively simple, but very effective. Massively exaggerating the caveman "ugh" in Destroy All is also brilliant while driving in traffic...
Man i‘ve seen em in 2019 at the Dynamo in Zuerich at it was fucking amazing. A celebration of wayne and his legacy.
Saw Static-X last night. (2/16/24) Was actually a great show. Majority of the set was off first 2 albums. Was lucky enough to see them back in the day with Wayne, but "Xero" did an honorable job filling his shoes. They had more theatrics than I was expecting, but it fit into the "Evil Disco" vibe. Was a great show to get out some pent up aggression and just have a good time for the night.
I was at that show too! It was so crazy and SO many people! They did an excellent job!
Playing to their strengths. Hysterical. 😂
I love that you try to find the piece of sweetcorn in the turd.
"Wearin' somebody's brains on their shirt..."
I would LOVE to see your reaction to to the group Voiceplay and their cover of hellfire you would be shocked
Justin, as we are the same age, and as we pass the point of of the countdown to senior citizenry, I have a suggestion of bringing you up to modernity in this genre. There is a band called Minority Sound from Czechia that actually has some great guitar solos.
"Kookie" (Cookie, with a Bolton accent) for the bird-like animal....
