- How to stop your Harley engine overheating in traffic - What is Harley EITMS - Here I discuss the Harley engine and how it can overheat in hotter temperatures whilst in stationary traffic. I also talk about how Harley have a solution to assist the cooling of the engine and it is through the Engine Idle Temperature Management System - EITMS
The following is the basic criteria for it to automatically shut down or re engage if EITMS is enabled:
EITMS will activate (rear cylinder will turn off) when all of the following condition are met:
Engine temperature is greater than 287°F domestic 165°C international
Twist grip opening is at idle
Vehicle speed under 1 mph 2 km/h Engine speed under 1200 RPM
EITMS will disable (rear cylinder will again fire) if any one of the following occurs:
Engine temperature falls below 275°F domestic 135°C international
Twist grip opening is greater than idle
Vehicle speed exceeds 2 mph 3 km/h Engine speed exceeds 1350 RPM
Clutch is released with vehicle in gear
The ambient temperature is generally considered needs to be 80degF for it to activate.
To enable it, you roll the throttle into the off position and hold it there for a few seconds and wait for the cruise indicator lamp to flash green...to enable or flash orange...to disable.

I really appreciate your videos, I'm learning a lot about my sport glide that I wasn't aware of !!
Thanks so much
Thanks Alf... as always really appreciate you sharing your knowledge
Thanks Eric
If you have it activated in cold weather. It will not engage that feature anyway. So people can might as well have it activated all the time.
Wow great information thank you for actually sharing this information something we all need to know VERY CRITICAL INFO.
Alf,
Great info. My plums thankee, kindly!
Mike
Ha ha you're welcome Mike. Don't forget that tinfoil fella ha ha
One of my ironheads is a late 84. Last of the iron sporties. I put a fan in front of my oil cooler with a small shroud. Has a switch to turn on and off. Works great . Or I just shut the motor off until traffic moves. My other bikes I just shut it off. Lots of fun with a kick only chopper but I havent overheated my bikes
Thank you so much i was worried that something was wrong this is the only place i found this info
This was a huge help to being concerned when my new bike overheated in traffic for the first time. Thank u Sir! 👍
james adamsjohnson you’re welcome.glad it helped. Cheers
No way!! Thank you so much!!! This helps alot!!!! I didn't know that as well
Mate your a life saver live in the states Florida to be specific and this is needed
Thanks so much. Cheers
Nice!! Thanks for the info.
Fantastic, just bought a Sport Glide and didn't know about this feature. Thank you !
does your new bike have a factory oil cooler non it?
@@billgonzales8978 yes
I'ts always interesting to learn. I dont remember to have read about this in the specs data...
You're welcome. Any new info I'll try to let you know Cheers
Great info thanks
Thanks for the video. For info all the fuel injected models have this system. The rider can enable/disable on fly by wire bikes. The cable throttle bike have the system but you have to get the dealer Tom enable.
Cool, thanks
Fantastic mate. Keep the videos coming
Thanks, will do! cheers
Thanks dude, I thought that's what was happening, but I wasn't sure if there was a fault.
👍
Cheers
Very informative mate!
Thanks
Hey thanks!
Super information
EITMS is purely for rider comfort. When it activates and“shuts off”the rear cylinder, it’s not because the motor is overheating. It’s designed to reduce the heat radiating from the rear cylinder to the rider.
Yes indeed
My scrotum salutes them!
Exactly. Nothing to do with overheating the second cylinder.
Great Info Brother.
Thanks so much
Thanks Alf. Good info that I wasn’t aware of. I do suspect that mine is enabled from factory on my 2019 Road King. I say that because I usually detect a stumble and then a notable difference in idle. I will verify as soon as possible.
Ok great. Thanks and glad you’re finding the videos useful. Cheers
Harley F---up, my friend bought a new 1984 top of the line new softail new EVO motor, Kick and electric start, 100,000 miles later he still rides it but he also rides a newer ultra classic no heating problems with them old Harleys?
Cheers
Great content
Cheers
does 2003 Road King Classic FI ( FLHRCI) have this feature?
That's great info. I have worried about my bike in the hotter than hell Oklahoma summers and riding in a city with over 1 million residents. I will activate my Sport Glide ASAP.
I wonder if the 2012 Nightster sportsters have this feature
Mine is always on, and works even when it is not very hot outside. When its cold you can leave it enabled because the cilinder disabling doesn’t work, the engine does not overheat though.. so this option is best when enabled…and forget👍🏼
Yep cheers
Hi
Which O2 sensor should I buy for my FXSB Breakout 2014
Denniskirk is claiming theirs better from oem as they are made with ceramic body made of stabilised zirconian dioxide, surface coated with gasspermeable platinum electrodes & porous ceramic help erosion due to contamination particles in exhausts
I have a 2002 Road King Screamin' Eagle CVO and don't have an Owner's Manual, anyone know if there is a LIST of which MODEL YEAR bikes have the EITMS feature? Mine was running 277 degrees on a trip between Pahrump and Las Vegas, NV yesterday with myself and my wife. Air Temp outside was 70 degrees, way cooler than our Summer temps of 120 degrees.
Does this work on a FXDR?
Will it stay green if its activated or will it turn green momentarily then go back to amber
Nice video thank you Alf. I’ve seen it on Indian bikes and I was wondering why harley’s doesn’t have this feature
Cheers
loved it on my triglide when i had it. not on my 07 FLHRC
ok cheers
Agradecido pela informação.
Thanks about information.
You’re welcome cheers
Excellent video Alf! As usual very informative and helpful to me. I have a 2020 heritage classic and had no idea about the EITMS feature. I'm thinking the oil cool system will keep it from overheating. Why would this feature ever be disabled? IMO just keep it on, its a safety feature. These bikes are expensive and, to me, there is no reason for the bike to overheat regardless of how long the rider is idling.
Thanks so much Tony. Yes keep it on in my book too. Does no harm really. Cheers
Ran into your vid
Definitely the dyna 2017 has it always not turning over right after a long ride till it cools off for like 20 minutes getting an oil cooling system for this problem hope it works cheereos
Cheers
those twin cam motors were nothing but problems
Brilliant thanks so much for the hint! Maybe I’m missing something but is there a draw back for to not not having this feature enabled?
I would only say if you’re riding in hotter temperatures but otherwise it should be fine. There isn’t a performance reduction with having it enabled so it’s really a personal choice I suppose. Cheers
@@RevelatorAlf If you have a big cam with a choppy idle when EITMS activates the bike sounds like a Honda 90 so many owners don't like that.
Thanks for this video; which models have this feature / I have a 2019 breakout Ill get this week, I wonder if it has it;
Yes it will have it. Cheers
RevelatorAlf would my 05 dyna super glide have it? It's fuel injection
System is for riders comfort (heat production). Nothing to do with overheating second cylinder.
Is it possible to lower the idle rpm for a harley davidson street 750 ? Ty
Have you gone back to the H-D dealer to ask for advice?
I just put two car electric fans on both sides opposing each other...never had a problem since although Now I need to carry around a car battery!
Ha ha I bet
Yep with respect the title is misleading, EITMS won't stop your harley from overheating, it kicks in when oil and engine temps are already too high and it doesn't bring them back to optimal (seems aimed at rider comfort). Only real options are fans on the engine and oil cooler. It's ridiculous, decades of big twins roasting in traffic and still no fan-assisted coolers for the new softails as standard (and only aftermarket option is mounting an additional cooler for $550+!)
Does the engine have to be in neutral and clutch disengage for it to work? Or will it work with the clutch pull in and still in gear?
not that I am aware of
hey man there is a 2013 883 sportster for sale which had the engine temperature sensor removed for a few months, and the bike runs with a rich fuel mixture now.
Is it safe to buy this bike? thanks mate
I would get that fixed really. Cheers
I had this on my 2010 police roadking ,I have the 2020 streetbob now,and I must have it cause when I’m sitting at lights I can hear the back cylinder shut down, and was worried my engine was bad
Yep, should be normal action. Cheers
I checked,I have it! Thanks for the vid ,I was concerned
Does this work on 2011 CVO street glide
not sure
so how does this help the front cylinder? That 1 is still generating heat.
It won’t. But the front cyclised is generally cooler and will be cooled more by oncoming air flow. The rear cylinder is almost in its own shell so get even hotter
@@RevelatorAlf ok, makes sense.
Is there a way to check which bikes have an EITMS system on a harley's website?
Not sure. All Softails and tourers have it but not sure if there is a search option
buy and older harley dont buy this new problem Harley
I have a question I have a iron 883 I had just put some slip on pipes do I need needa tune it and wil it overheat
I would say not totally necessary as long as the air filter is still standard but it also depends what kind of exhaust you have put on and how that affects the back pressure. If the bike doesn't sound or feel right then your best option would be to tune it, cheers
@@RevelatorAlf thank you 😊
While this feature is enabled , is it safe to do highway speeds ?? Or is this strictly for traffic flow
It's perfectly fine. cheers
Bro plz help me problem karizma ZMR OverHiting
not sure what could be wrong with your Hero, but it could be a number of things
Can this be done while the motor is running, and also is this enabled from the showroom?
Good info, think you can alter the temperature of this system through the V&H FP3.
Thanks Philip. Yes I'm quite sure you can do this whilst the engine is running too. I'm not sure however if this is enabled as standard from the showroom, however my bike had it already enabled. Perhaps there might be some adjustment in the FP3 however I'm really not sure, however it would be good to know whether the FP3 in anyway affects the EITMS activation parameters. Cheers
I keep mine off all the time....If you notice, when it is enabled the motorcycle idles up and down and rough...Just me.
For the better though
New M8 doesn't overheat does it ? Just turn it off.
errm yes they do
Anyone who knows... I BBQ a lot and have a digital thermometer... I am willing to carry it in my bag on my 2002 Road King SE CVO to check engine and head temps if that is an accurate and viable way to make sure nothing cracks... I would hope my $450 DynoTUNE Power Vision is giving me the correct temp, but would the digital thermometer confirm, I am thinking it would. (Not a Harley Guy, I just own and ride one. I don't own a single Harley patch or logo if it is not attached to the bike. Just not my gig!)
I keep midgets in my panniers to jump out and fan the engine. Skills.
Ha ha perfect. I need to get some
Does anybody have any idea what temp it should activate on a twin cam Softail deluxe? My V&H FP3 has it set at 310degrees which seems to high according to my testicles which are being boiled. The bike has a Stage 1 and a Stage 3 and running Samson true duals. Not sure it was this hot before i changed the pipes and added the FP3.
Sorry can’t help you there
OIL cooler helps alot?
Bike was running too lean. I took the bike to a dyno specialist and he reprogrammed the FP3 map as it was way too lean. Might change the FP3 to a power commander 5 and have it dyno tuned. V&H have no idea how to map bikes period. That’s my personal experience with them. I’m sure others have had better luck.
Hey guys! Would this cause my bike to shut off randomly while riding, backfire, and my speedometer goes crazy. Sometimes revs on its own with clutch in and high idles any gear. It runs amazing when this isn’t happening. Thought I fixed it today, rode it for 30 minutes and it shut off 2 times, revd with clutch in 2 and backfired once. Thanks guys I can’t figure this one out
If it was faulty of course
Hmm that’s an interesting one. This sounds like a sensor issue messing with your ECM. Ha e you checked for error codes?
@@RevelatorAlf haven’t used a scanner, don’t have one. But there is no engine light coming on. Bike runs great. Every once and awhile it will randomly do one of the problems. Seems completely random. I tried cleaning my map sensor so I don’t think that’s the issue. This is my last guess
I really appreciate the reply. Thank you so much
What bike is it by the way?
Wonder why so many Harley haters watch Harley videos?
Checked my owners manuals, my 08 Ultra has this, my 07 Dyna does not.
Thanks, I would never had known to look for it.......hope it still works, not being used for 13yrs
Thanks so much. Cheers
Fan.
Cheers
Actually this feature isnt for overheating..its there to help with heat transfer to the rider.i mean it will probably help but not its intended purpose
It idle really weird
Harley davidson developed a system to prevent overheating in my mid 90's EVO motor.
It's called MAKING NO POWER!!
Funny when non harley riders talk about us blipping the engine at stop lights. There is a reason for that. But of course these idiots think its for show. Which it is but theres 2 other reasons for it also. Heres 1 of them and the other is for when you launch it catches.
yes indeed ha ha
Not on a 07 roadking. Sigh
Ah ok cheers
This is nothing new my 2013 FLHTK has this
You’re right. This is nothing new
1.use water cooled ultra limited
2.use fan cooled
3.water cooled conversion(never seen one)
4.just use foggy
5.use another bike brand...that have water cooled....
Lol
ok
wanna know an easy solution? Long red light? Just sitting? SHUT THE MOTOR OFF. Start it back up when you can move again. Anyone who owns an Evo shovel panhead or iron sporty knows this.
I find this truely amazing that Harley decides to keep engine cool by shutting off half of the engine! Other engineering companies just add water cooling system! This is old long time issue. Over heated motors have always been an issue for the life of motors but Harley has fought until recently just getting into the 20 century engineering. Still hard not to luv em.
Buy a water cooled one...
If you're on a motorcycle......how do you end up in stationery traffic? 🤣
This isn't the states, we can split any lane we want 😃
It doesnt protect the bike..... It's for rider comfort.
Dam just make them liquid cooled
Well a lot of people would agree
@@RevelatorAlf that's why I don't ride American made no more im pro suzuki liquid cooled I love to here my cooling fan come on in traffic
They are liquid (oil) cooled heads
Me tooooooooooo lol
Why doesn't Harley Davidson make thier bikes water-cooled and cut out all this gamble?
they do now on some
put a radiator on it, problem solved
Ha ha
Stop your Harley from overheating in traffic! Trade it for a BMW.
ha ha there's always that
Never.
Germans make the best of everything, period. A German bomb maker helped us beat japan in war, German rocket maker put our man on the moon, nuf said. no im not german
…along with your balls.
Piss off
Its been proven this feature is pretty much useless.
ive owned 7 Harleys bought them used never had heat problems with them, these new harleys with all the new crap are garbage they are not for my crowd we stick with carberators not fuel injected crap, not for me
Horse for courses for sure
I know I'd pay 40k for a motorcycle that can't cool itself with out farting out the back cylinder. Harley is a joke!
Ha ha
Harley sucks in India overpriced piece of crap metal RE is far more better
Ha ha so you’re a Hero rider then are you?
@@RevelatorAlf Hero rider ??????
@@RevelatorAlf i just hate Harley in India because they r fuking overprice & they dont give a fuk to there customers, what i think of Harley they r just expensive piece of crap & there just there where RE comes & RE is great
2022 iron 883 ??
Just don't ride harley. If your bike can't handle a bit of stop n go traffic you know it's a piece of crap.
Well…perhaps
Is it possible to lower the idle rpm for a harley davidson street 750 ? Ty
There should be a way but you'll have to speak to someone who has specific knowledge about the 750. Cheers
