- It's no secret that Harley-Davidson engines run hot, especially the Twin Cam engines. Your bike in stock form from the factory is tuned to run lean. Lean = Hot. Heat is not only miserable for you as a rider but it's also not good for your engine. As you upgrade the performance of your Harley getting the heat out becomes even more critical. But there are several ways you can combat heat to enjoy a much more comfortable riding experience. Helping to rid your bike of heat can be as simple as changing the oil you use all the way up to elaborate coolers and fans.
Check out www.dueydidit.com/ for your some of the best oil coolers out there from Ultra Cool Oil Cooler!!!

What options to cool down your Harley-Davidson are you going to use or already have on your bike?
Oil filter relocation kit , tank lift with wings. DK CUSTOMS. Have videos on the subject on their CZcams page
External breather system
Cold beer
They makes some awesome products over there, one of the only air cleaners out their you can route directly to a catch can.
😆😂👍 that's what l am talking about!
Oil coolers most bang for the buck. Besides helping with cooling you add to the oil volume. Cooler engines make more horsepower
is it like and additive?
@@jordi_casas
He means an aftermarket oil cooler that's like a radiator, but made to cool your oil.
Cooler oil means; engine last longer, has more power!
(Look up; Harley oil cooler)
When I am riding in the cold weather I appreciate my softail heritage having the oil tank under my seat lol.
No need for a electric heated seat!
Then in the summer your ass is on fire LOL
Right 😆😂
My oil tank is under the seat and all it does is exist!
1: I went with synthetic oil.
2: Removed and relocated the horn from its housing, then rotated the bottom of the housing up to face forward, thus creating an air scoop for the rear cylinder.
That’s the most brilliant thing I have heard. Love it.
@@slowburnritual3055 Thanks, it seems to be working just fine.
I just want to thank you for this Godlike advice, even if its 2 years later, so thank you
If you're still around, would you mind sending a pic of this?
@@mark-1234 Not sure if I took a picture of this set up, but I can look.
I did put the horn back to original, installed an oil temp gauge, relocated the oil filter to the left frame down tube.
My engine temp only went to 195 degrees on a 90 + degree day with a 24 mile ride and some traffic light stops.
My bike does not seem to need that horn modification.
Oil cooler seems like a pretty sensible option to me. That Jim's fan would be the icing on the cake.
i moved out of Florida, relocated to Montana, she runs cool know
That's the best cooling system you can get!
Nice- sounds good ; I’m right behind ya -
Especially in the winter.
I use love jugs mighty mites with a Jagg fan assisted oil cooler and a DK external breather. Amsoil synthetic in all 3 holes. I live in Florida and this set up makes a huge difference.
Damn that's awesome! What temperature is your bike running at down there with that setup?
I have a digital oil dipstick and my temps are always in the low too middle 200’s.
@@mongohd9611 Kick ass setup!
Tampa area myself. Thank u for the info
I am also in FL thanks for the info... My wife and I ride Road Glides and damn they get hot...lol.. I am gonna give these a try...
I absolutely love that you mentioned the shelf!
😄😂 it needs it's own replacement video
Catless headpipes help a lot from heat on the right leg.
Prob makes the motor cooler too.. breathes easier
I've run large oil coolers for over forty years. Even my Shovel runs cool on hot days. It has an oil cooler from some quad (they run larger coolers than decorative motorcycle sized toys).
Look around as there are many interesting cooler donors including quads and common overseas bikes.
I like your videos because they are informative and interesting. The information is delivered without being too wordy or dragging on. I think the content to time ratio is pretty much perfect. Coming from me that should be a good compliment because I have ADDHD and keeping my attention and making me happy with the delivery is a pretty neat trick indeed. Great work I am now subscribed.
Thank you, l'm really appreciate it!
I love having the "Fangs " air deflectors on the fork tubes, but definitely holds the heat in.
May get a oil cooler.
Thanks man.
BEST VIDEOS on CZcams right here.
The Jim's has a horn included in it. Thanks for the videos
With my 05 Deuse, all I've did to help the heartbeat on my bike was a 10k full service since I didn't have any history back in 2018 when I got it.I added a simple oil cooler and switch to synthetic since I knew it made a big difference doing the same with my 1998 Fat Boy.Being in the upper 80s to 90s temperatures almost year round my bikes need all the best to help them run cooler.Oil products have come a long way over the years.I found running full synthetic has helped my bikes run a lot cooler for sure.
Thanks Gixxer...on point as usual. Have a GREAT NEW YEARS!
I just installed some lovejugs and they work really well.
Thanks bro! Always great accurate info from your channel...
I appreciate that!
I bought a Harley because of you Gixxerfoo. Well, you, and other youtubers i watch. LOL. Keep up the great content brogy.
Awesome! Thank you! It's quite a different ride than anything else out there.
Don't like one try the other you're doing a really fantastic job keep up the good work I just bought a barn find Harley last year AMF Sportster can't wait to ride it just got to go through the whole bike but I love everything you're talkin about keep up the good work once again
Peter, Australia.
Good ideas.
Like the oil cool. I've also been considering a tune, but I'm an 883. I ride 90% dirt and the 883 will spin the back wheel. So I'm torn between 1200 then tune and tuning the 883.
Sounds like the take away, as you mentioned again at the end of your video, is to use a high quality synthetic oil...maybe in all three holes. And then change the oil every 3-5 K miles. Easy Peasy solution.
All great advice. I'll star with oil cooler and synthetic oil. Then we'll see what happens next. Brill and thank you. Merry Christmas all. A in the UK 🎄
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you all too!
Just saw this. Good video.
I've added the tank lift, air diverters, and remote oil filter from D&K Customs. I think I keep it as cool as I can as long as I'm moving. If I'm not, well plan B kicks in.
In Jan. 1977 I bought a new 1976 FLH. It was supposed to be a city pd bike and had 3.5 gallon tanks and a pogo seat.
In mid '77 I bought a Hayden oil cooler that just fit between the bottom of the down tubes. At that time everyone was still using 60w. I had an oil plug with a temp gage so I started using 50w. I was told by the Harley mechanic that this was a bad (crazy) idea. I then bought a Lockhart cooler for the bike about the time HD came out with the 78 1/2 w/Lockhart and ran my oil return lines through the Hayden up to the Lockhart and the into the oil bag and started running 40w in the winter time until the 40w started getting too hot then I would switch to 50w. I did have a leather cover for the Hayden and blocked the airflow when the oil didn't get hot enough to evaporate the moisture in the oil.
I also ran Shell or Texaco aviation oil. I got 92k out of the lowers on that shovel and did three top ends during that time. I sheared a key on the scavenging side of the pump and discovered that the chrome hard facing was breaking down and at that point I pulled it down. FYI, I lived close to the coast of N. CA so it might get to be 90f + during the days but in the mornings it was maybe 40-45f so that 60w was like tar and it would take a long time to circulate.
I always kept my RPM's in the torque range too. Shovels are strong runners but only needed one more gear but 3rd was long legged. Also ran some 120 octane av gas and what a treat! Break the rear tire lose in all 4 gears. Hard on valves though. I've had pans, ('56 FLE) pan lowers w/shovel tops (S&S 84" stroker), Evo's (shop queen) and a TC. My shovel was the best and the strongest runner and most reliable.
IDK if.you get to read this ,.in the mid 80' s .i had a 74 fxe I'm telling you , that super glide was so reliable id take it anywhere with out a second thought I was hoping to keep that machine forever but some drunken idiot destroyed it almost killed me and my lady. I still wish I had that old shovel ...
Love this channel!
Glad you enjoy it!
Very informative and everything you've been saying about the oils the cams the Big Bore kits, and lots of good knowledge thank you🚲
Also changing the cams will leave the combustion chamber cooler
Thank you! That's very true moving more air and hot gas through will cool the bike down.
I would make sure it has a good tune, thermostat controlled fans & proper synthetic oil. Also, I've recently learned about 1" up to 4" tank lifts, allowing cooler air to circulate between the gas tank and motor. I need to do more research on that, but it sounds logical. Almost forgot, reusable Flo Oil Filters that have cooling fins and no back pressure, allowing oil to circulate smoothly
When I owned a 1987 FLSTC , the oil lines were accessible. So the oil line going to the filter I routed through the highway bars by drilling, tapping and installing the necessary fittings and then back to the filter. It made for an inexpensive but effective cooler.
I have a 2019 streetglide, I put a fan on my oil cooler and a set of love jugs for me heads. The love jugs are kn a separate switch so when it gets 85 degrees hotter I can turn on the love jugs. What a difference in how cool the temps stay. As I live in Mesa AZ keeping my harley cool is important. By the way your video was very informative thanks.
You've got a really nice setup on there, it's a must being out in Arizona.
I really enjoy your videos. I have learned a lot. Thank you.
You are very welcome, I will keep the content coming!
@@GixxerFoo And I will keep watching.
I switched from Harley Syn 3 to Amsoil in my Breakout 114. Huge difference.
Great video Gixx, I would recommend that people read the comments, a lot of useful information in there. really like it, almost as much as your videos!
On my 2013 Ultra Classic I used the UltraCool fan assisted oil cooler commonly called "the Reefer" . It has a thermostat and light that comes on when it kicks on. The bike ran syn 3 oil , had a high flow air cleaner , V&H full exhaust and tuned with race tuner . Living in SE Louisiana its almost always hot and humid so it kicked on quite frequently in traffic and when slowing down after interstate runs. Bike would get really hot in city traffic prior to UltraCool, problem solved after. After awhile i upgraded to Feuling camchest 465 C kit- more power , doubled the oil pressure and flow and the UltraCool kicked on less often.
On the 2017 FLHXS i installed the HD fan assist for the oil cooler and never had a heat problem. The FLHXS also had high flow AC , exhaust and tune.
Now trying to figure out best route for 2021 Triglide but to put UltraCool have to cut lower fairing and I'm not quite ready to do that. I'm seriously considering the DK oil cooler/filter relocation set up and once the MoCo warranty is done a Feuling camchest kit.
Heat kills engines and makes them wear faster. Happy riding !!
Ultra Cool is awesome, one of my favorites out there.
Another good vid, thanks for posting it!
Thank you, we appreciate your support over here!
@@GixxerFoo No problem! BTW, Ames brand laser thermometers are cheap and small; makes it easy to check jug and head temps when out on a hot day.
I started using Amsoil at the 5000 mile oil change and I change it at every 5000. So that was the first thing.
I believe I would go with the Jims fan for the next improvement. It looks good and it will not over cool the oil since it won't run at cold temperatures. That is assuming it has a thermostat. Too often on a long ride it is getting downright chilly before I get home. An oil cooler might pull the operating temp down too low.
Great video, lots of options and info.
I've always used the Harley syn 3 oil in my 03 road king and changed the push rods and needle bearings and also went new cam tenisioners and just try to use my head with it and when I want to raise hell I break out the ol 90 softtail custom I enjoy your channel thanks for the tips you have gave me on my 03
I run Redline syn in all holes. The back cyl on my TC 06 FLHRI can really put out the heat. I wrapped my rear pipe under the heat shield with exhaust wrap. Not eliminated but big difference. Rideability is not an issue and I always get 40+ mpg. The fan idea sounds good but my EVO is still the best!
Hell those Evo's are where it's at, TC's just run hot. TC's aren't bad engines and they produce more power, but heat is the byproduct. What model are you running a TC in?
Thank you very much , this explains why my bike felt like a wet sponge when i rode from las vegas to LA last year 😂😂
You're welcome! That's a brutal climate out that way, you can't get enough cooling going on out there!
My 03 95in, 10.5-1 comp. Wood .590 lift Dyna runs consistantly in the 185-190 range here on Maui where it is in the 80's all year long. Joe Mondello did the head work and bored the cylinders, he also cryo froze the heads, barrels and pistons, then coated the combustion chambers and pistons. I also run a finned aluminum reusable oil filter and a Jims finned cam cone cover. I use a big .205 main jet in the CV carb and run a Dynatek ignition. Valvoline 60 VR1 racing oil that is high in zinc. All those things I'm sure add up to why it runs so cool.
I own a 2012 HD Fatboy Lo, I’ve removed the cats with V and H pipes, switched to Amsoil synthetic and with probably add an oil cooler to lower the heat . I do have some perspective, Ibalso own a 2002 Yamaha VStatr 1100 that also has a V twin ( a bike bought new 10 yrs earlier) I switched this bike over to Royal Purple synthetic and the bike immediately ran cooler, stronger and even shifted smoother and the heat reduction that this oil provided got the heat way down . For those unfamiliar, this bike is also air cooled only just like a Harley, only Yamaha has a much cooler running version for whatever reason. Fast forward 10 yrs and I buy a 2012 Fatboy Lo new and love the bike but hate the heat it makes, so much heat infact that synthetic oil alone is not enough, I believe a oil cooler will get this heat down as well as possibly adjusting the fuel a little richer. The Yamaha is my barometer or gold standard that I’m trying to get as close to.I ride and love both these bikes and often wonder why the heck the Vstar runs so damned much cooler with a lighter oil ( 10w 40 ) points to ponder.
I relocated my coil to where the horn mounts on most softails allowing more air to run between the rear jug and also hit the oil tank from both sides. It also cleans up the look. I also use the Vance and HInes FP3 fuel pak and it works well.
Great idea, getting those coils out the way helps tremendously with the air flow! FP3 maps are awesome, I tuned my bike with their improved stock map just to feel the difference before I did anything else. That alone was night and day difference in the power and the bike ran so much cooler!
@@stephenhd123 weird comment. Not understanding the response.
It's my understanding that jags has a fan assisted oil cooler that I was considering for my RG. Also there's a jug fan for about 250 bucks (ballpark) that looks like your cowbell horn but with a mesh covering. I've seen one it's well made and the guy that has it on his bike likes it, that's all I can say about it.
I run lovejugs and they work great.
Good information, I don’t need it but I sure could have used it in the past. Living in the Deep South, it’s common to be riding in extreme heat and humidity. 95 degrees and above with a index of 105-115. Anyway I would go with the Syn oil & wide band o2 sensor. The jugs are not my thing but that S&S definitely would be a nice option. Thanks 😎
Great videos! Glad to hear your thoughts on bikes.
Thank you! I really appreciate the support!
I luv the Cool Master Luv Guggs!!!! I have been using them for more than 5 years now and they also cool at about 100 degrees also!!!! And I am also a distributor for Amsoil. Amsoil did a test with their oil that if using the Cool Master Luv Jugs it lowers the temperature 140 plus degrees!!!! I have a 106 kit in my 07 Ultra Classic Electra Glide and make such a big difference to keeping my Harley cool!!!!
I really like Amsoil products, I use just about everything they offer! 140 degrees is quite the drop, that's really impressive! How much power are getting out of that 106 kit?
I simply put a FLO Reusable Oil Filter on my Sporty, external breathers to keep blow-by out of the crank case, and have stuck with synthetic oil since I got it. I've had Harley Syn3, Mobil 1, and Red Line 20w50 thus far, and the Red Line seems to keep the engine running most smoothly. The FLO filter also is a big win in that it uses a magnet to capture any metal, it flows oil more easily than disposable filters (particularly at start up), filters better than disposables, *AND* it has those fins carved right into the billet to assist with cooling. There's also oil filter relocation kits that could move your oil filter into the breeze for improved cooling, though an oil cooler would be more effective, and either way you'd be using the same adapters and hose arrangements.
You put a serious setup together there, those reusable filters are expensive but well worth the investment. I need to check into the one you've got on there!
The FLO filters are great! I don't feel bad about changing my oil too often with them. The oil gets recycled.
I love your channel man. I’m no mechanic, more like mekanik lol.. I’ve learned so much from you! My wife said on our recent trip that I’m gonna end up building bikes if I keep listening to you lol
That is awesome!
I also put love jugs on mine and I know it kind of looks goofy but it does work especially in those real hot days when you're sitting at those lights
Those things are awesome for stop and go traffic in the summer!
Thanks for the info. With my 03 Twin Cam, I've just went with AMSoil and it seems to run cooler and better. But should be better with the Feuling OE+ camplate & oil pump combo... almost finished putting it all back together...
That cam plate and oil pump is going to make a huge difference! The added oil volume and increased flow will help cool it off!
@@GixxerFoo yes Amsoil has nothing to do with it.
My 1999 Evo Harley Sportster runs 200 degrees in August in Florida to up can't get better than that
I've been riding Harley's since 1975. The HD engines are designed to be Air Cooled and they need air moving over the fins to do cool them down. Yes, an Oil Cooler will help to cool your oil a little. But if you really want to cool these newer engines down and ride them all summer long for years. You need to install a set of Love Jugs cooling fans. I've had a set on my 2010 103 EG Limited with hard lowers for about eight or nine years now wired up to my Aux switch. Look dorky but they do cool your engine 100 degree.
Air flow n is the best way to do it!
I wish the engineers at HD were smarter about this stuff because trying to "fix" the multiple factory installed issues with my beloved '07 Road King is really more than my pea brain can handle.
Tuning, exhaust, cooling, compensators, rocker lockers, oh my !
If I knew you needed to be smart to own a Harley I probably would have bought a Honda.
Oh my God, what am I saying...
No way !!!

@@GixxerFoo I use to have a parade fan on my 06 CVO ultra and man it made a big difference as well 👍🏼💯
@@OZARKSHDRIDERS While in the process of buying that, buy a tank lift and the deflectors they enhance airflow over the engine so hot air does not get trapped under the tank [it also helps against air buffeting] and helping the engine cool down.
@@64Goef yeah I've got the deflectors, but I do need to lift the tank a little, thanks 👍🏼💯
Couple easy things I did on my 06 FXDB - both helped: tank lift and coil relocation. Allows greater airflow around both heads. Noticeably cooler motor. 😎
Great idea 👍
It's really surprising how much cooling you get by clearing all that away from the cylinders!
Good advice! Thankyou!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video
I installed the ULTRA COOL electric fan cooler on my twin cam 88 3 years ago and its done a great job. This last summer me and another biker went on a ride through a big city lots of stops. His 15 k mileage twin cam 88 hit 265 while my 69 k mileage twin cam never topped 230. But I also have a high volume oil pump that I installed when i replaced the spring tensioners with hydraulic.
Nice work! That high volume pump really helps out that cooler quite a bit.
I have a 2008 Wide Glide 96 and added both Ultra OIL Cooler fan assisted with finned oil filter for additional cooling. I wasn't happy with high Temps putting engine in parade mode. So I added Large Love Jugs with dual fans . Highest temp I have reached is 210-220 degrees. With Synthetic oil. Is this too cool? Ron of Fort Collins,Co.
I fitted Nightrider Xi14ED fuel enrichment leads on my 2011 Iron 883 after after I'd installed Python 2.5 slip-on mufflers, I kept the stock air cleaner. The throttle response is noticeably smoother and more responsive with no popping from the exhaust, most importantly the motor runs considerably cooler.
Those are the original fueling devices for the Harleys, those work great! Honestly if someone doesn't plan on tuning that's the way to go!
@@GixxerFoo Thanks for your reply, I've had them on my Iron since 2012 without any issues, they are a cheap way to sort out the overheating problem on a Sportster motor. I bought mine from Jersey H-D here in the UK for £109.00 ($146.26) including shipping, so H-D must approve the use of the Xi14ED kit.
That's not a bad price at all for a set of those, even a stock bike could use a set!
Just ordered the black & silver FLO Spin-On Oil Filter. I had a stainless filter in a Suzuki DR 650. This unit looks high quality and will definitely cool the oil some. I like the higher flow and magnet debris trap too. Thanks for the tip GixxerFoo
I love my dr650. Great fucking bike
Another thing one can do on the M8 is (if you have that OEM engine hugger back plate type of air intake box) is to replace it with one with a one that isn't as close (and large) to the engine to help prevent heat trapping.. I've rotated my horn housing forward and remounting to be center of the two cylinders, rotated the horn backwards to prevent water intake, and I believe it will be a no-cost heat reduction solution for the rear cylinder (will get it hottest at 65+ mph on very hot days) as there needs to be more air flow for that rear at those occasions
I run 20w50 Amsoil in all my bikes. I was sold on Amsoil when I seen their laboratory test on a Harley. That was such a brutal test. I suggest everybody should watch that test.
I Don't Recommend Amsoil in Primary and Tranny Since Even HD make Heavy 80/140 Gear oil..Amsoil is Directed for ALL Consumers While Syn Three Only Harley , thus the Ratings. Syn 3 Is a Perfect Blend For HD engines..Something to ponder.
@@paulhorvath9784 I did run syn 3 before I switched to Amsoil. The syn 3 made my lifters sound like they were going to fly out of the engine. I run Amsoil primary and Amsoil Trans fluid in the other holes. It works for me very well. Have 63k miles on my older cvo and never had an issue so Amsoil it is on my new Roadglide. Thanks for the input.
That was my deal to, Amsoil really quieted down some the quirky noises.
I'll have to run a oil analysis on Syn3 again, It's not a bad oil per say but it is a lower tier synthetic.
That's what sold me too, it takes some major heat to get a oil filter stud to come out with the oil filter, melting plastic containers and then you could pour it back in if you wanted to... yeah it's gonna hold up just fine for my riding style.
Heard an aftermarket oil pump like S&S or fueling that moves oil faster is a really a good way to cool down the bike. Claims up to 30 deg.
It really is a great way to cool them down, flowing that oil at a higher volume helps cool it off. Some will argue you run the risk of sumping, it's possible but not all that common.
@@GixxerFoo I don't see how that could increase your risk of sumping. The oil is being scavenged from the crankcase to the oil filter, to the heads, to the oil pan. If anything, a higher capacity pump will reduce sumping.
@@bloodymarvelous4790 Good point Bloody. The risk of sumping is at it's highest when using the oem oil pump. Aftermarket pumps like S&S scavenge so quickly that sumping is not an issue. That's why people replace oem pumps with them.
LOVE JUG'S 👊💨
I'm running a twin cam and I have a fan on the side of my motor, I also have the oil radiator cooler. But another way to get rid of some of the heat, that not many people talk about is go down in the heat range of your spark plug during the real hot weather I have done that with great success for years. make your exhaust less restrictive so the gases can get out of the engine and then in turn your engine will be cooler.
Oil cooler and a Thundermax with wide band sensors in the pipes.
Thundermax is the best one out there!
I have a 88 FXRS that I used to run 100% synthetic oil in. Since I changed mechanics my new mechanic says even though I have updated gaskets in motor, Jims. Basically for the thinner oil leaks that would pop up here and there. I put in the best compaction gaskets I could find/recommended by other motor builders. Its worked and hadn't had an oil leak since in my Evo with synthetic oil. But when I changed mechanics he adamantly requested that I quick running synthetic oil and go back to the conventional oil that the motor was built for. He says synthetic oil doesn't work in older motors because of the increased tolorances/space in-between parts. Conventional oil takes up the excess space better than synthetic oil will. Buying into his thought process for awhile i changed back to Reg. oil but have lost about 8lbs of oil pressure on average. I was just wondering what your thoughts were on this? FYI my motor isn't stock but not bored, heads shaved down if makes a difference in your decision making. THANK YOU in advance Curt L.
I have solely relied on Amazon 2050 v-20 formula since my bike was new and my 2006 electric light is still running strong to this day even though it has a big four kit and cams. I'd like to say she's running 10° below what you normally would run on conventional oil.
I would go with the oil cooler. Just makes sense.
i like the fan assisted oil cooler option myself. if i had a harley. i have heard this is the last year of the sportster, and i'm wondering if they will release a water cooled version in 2021 from what they have learned with the 750 and the V rod. sad thing about water cooled bikes is you don't see many aftermarket stuff like big bore kits for them if any. good vid
It's highly possible the 2021 will be the last air cooled Sportster, a couple things could happen though. As it is it may still be sold in the US, but probably not Europe since it won't meet the new Emissions standards. There's some pictures floating around of what could be the new Sportster built on a platform with the new Revolution Max water cooled engine. It looks like something more along the lines of the Indain Scout.
Improved oil pump is the key, oil takes the heat away and dumps it in the tank 👍
That's a great point! You keep it moving especially at a good volume and it will cool the motor down, even more with a oil cooler.
I ride a liquid cooled bike. Never had a problem regularly riding in 98+ degrees.
i run schaeffers 20w50 racing oil, its supposed to make the engine run cooler. i also use schaefers in my srt8 as well. hands down the best oil ive come across to date. after seeing the videos of the guy in australia and what hes done with his harley. im not worried one bit about mine thats for sure. read a good one once where a gentleman said it doesnt overheat until you put a gauge on it. these things are torture tested big time so stop worrying about it and ride. good vid gixxer take care
I’d love to see you review or talk about oil temperature gauges.
Yeah why don’t air cooled bikes come with them instead of a warning light?
They should honestly, the oil light is more of a too late light. Lol you're usually out of oil by the time it comes on. They should have a gauge for oil temp and rear cylinder head temperature.
I always strip off any gauges my harleys have, and will only keep or add a oil temp gauge and/or a oil pressure gauge. That’s all u really need. My choppers have pressure gauges cuz on those old bikes it’s really more about flow. With them, the lower the pressure, the hotter they are running. My Evos I always run a temp gauge on the dip stick. Even on a hot day in the south I never seen it go over 200F... but it’s more about your riding style. No oil coolers on any of my bikes even though it would help... I always run tribodyne oil for tranny and engine. The panhead runs 70wt in summer and 60wt in the winter. Evo runs straight 50wt year round, and these oils have some neat shit in em to keep your components in good shape. Look em up
Well, I must be doing great then. With my stock engine on my '17 Limited, I averaged around 225-240 degrees on most days. Since installing my 128ci, I consistently operate in the 170-180 range unless I'm sitting for long periods of time in really hot weather, then it moves back into the 230 range.
Very nice! How are you liking that 128 so far?
Love it. Stuck a Woods cam in there with some other mods and getting 141 HP and 151 T. She’s a screamer. It’s a Limited but sure isn’t an “old man’s bike”.
I live in Florida and during the summer it is a cook-a-Rama for me and the bike. Added Love Jugs last winter and what a difference. The bike runs much better and the oil temp is much lower. It is a bit hotter on my right leg at red lights but my bike is much happier. I wish I did this years ago. 2012 Ultra Classic.
Thanks for sharing! The fans work great where you're at, they are awesome if you're out west crossing the desert.
Interesting and good video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching, we appreciate the support!
I live in Phoenix running a 96 stage 1. I will be upgrading it to a Fuel Moto 110. I already run synthetic, but I am really playing with the idea of the fan assist 10 row Jagg and possibly the jugs. Hopefully it’ll keep my oil around operating temps so my legs can stay on the rare side instead of well done.
You'll feel a huge difference with that fan assisted oil cooler!
I keep my temp down by lane splitting. That’s one of the VERY few things that I like about Cali. Keeping the bike moving in traffic helps with the design that the engineers came up with.
Totally agree! I would love to be able to split lanes here in Oklahoma, to me that's a lot safer than being a sitting duck in traffic.
I think I would add all three synthetic oil oil cooler and the fans to cool the jugs. I think that would be a home run right there and that would be all you need
Good video Ive been an Ultr cool dealer for about 4 years and it is awsome
I really like those dual fan setups they have, that will keep plenty of air moving across there for sure!
@@GixxerFoo yeah for sure and they offer a cover for the winter and bypass plug on the fans
I avoid riding in traffic jams or similar, so the air keeps flowing. Also, going 60 km/h or above helps maintain an optimal engine temperature. I rarely pass the 4000 rpm range, because I've noticed that the engine gets quickly hot once above that mark, especially in the Twin Cam. After all, these type of engines need a constant air flow, if fresh, even better. If I know I will be stuck in the traffic jams of the city, I pick up a 150 cc bike for this sole purpose.
I try to stay out of the traffic myself too, if l get stuck and were stopped l shut the bike off. Worst part is the heavy slow moving traffic and the bike just cooks 😬
@@GixxerFoo Yeah, I've been there too. I also turn off the motorcycle until the green light comes on, which here can be up to 5 minutes easily in some intersections. Have you tried a 150 cc bike for traffic jams? Wonderful cc. You filter anywhere; it gets hot, but nothing like a H-D; it is light weight and a 12.5 l tank can last up to 450 km. Wow. But, of course, I prefer my H-Ds whenever the traffic conditions permit it. Riding at night is a great time too in my opinion.
I mostly have open highways in the rural area l am in but... we do have a one lane bridge with a 5 minute light. Nothing for miles and then this one bridge 😆😂
@@GixxerFoo That's nice. Not the bridge, but the open highways.
Your vid could help people who live in dense population cities, like myself.
Cheers.
Thank you, l definently see l need to up my cooling game when l hit the city!
The cheapest way to cool your motor is a tank lift. I put one on my bike and made a big difference for less than 20 bucks more to come when some more money comes in lol happy trails
Tank lifts are awesome for getting some air flow and letting that hear escape!
I'm really happy with the tank lift on my 10 fxdb. It looks great.
I did a tank lift also i think it makes a difference that one of the reasons why i got a tank lift
There is another much less known option... There is an oil thermostat installed on the oil radiator of the V-Twins. It is designed to open up at 180 degrees (been awhile since I researched, may be 200 degrees). It acts just like a water thermostat. I swapped mine out to open up at 20 degrees before the factory thermostat. Looks like a coin with 2 divots drilled into it.
Also, Cycle Electric makes an impressive Voltage Regulator that can be relocated to improve air flow to the factory installed Oil Radiator.
I run the upgraded oil thermostat, dual fans behind my factory oil radiator, relocated voltage regulator, and Love Jug Mity-Mite fans. Trust me, on a warm day the bike has not struggles staying warm. My oil temp average is about 230 degrees even with all of this added (I have a Power Vision and monitor this as I ride). I can shut all the fans down for cooler days.
Mini mite work great
I have had the exhaust cams changed for a cam which keeps the valve open a bit longer. I have aTC88.
Cams and free flowing exhaust help tremendously, even the cams are designed with emissions in mind.
The molecules in synthetic oil are too small for Harley roller bearings due to the point contact between the bearing and journal. Great for plain bearing engines but not rollers bearing engines. I experienced lifter noise with synthetic in my Harley. Changed to conventional and noise disappeared. I also blew a front rod bearing running Amsoil. Amsoil did not dispute my claim. Use of conventional oil has been confirmed by 4 Harley master techs and I was an engineering at 3 major engine manufacturers including Harley Davidson.
That's a great point honestly, some motors just do better with conventional oil.
Ran 20k hard miles in my 2014 XL1200T in 2 years. Using Lucas 20w50 full synthetic. Not a single issue. I beat it hard as hell too but I do my own maintenance and never go over 5000 miles on engine and primary all using the same oil.
Side note... mechanics fix what engineers couldn't get right the first time. 🤣
@@louiewatson9389 That's not a lot of miles to make a judgement. We tend to treat our Harley's like a Ferrari when in reality it's an old line push rod twin. Use what you like but I have had bad experiences with synthetic in my Harley's. I run synthetic in my Ram, snow blower, lawn mower, pressure washer etc. The difference is plain bearings vs roller bearings. The smaller molecules are great for plain bearing engines but are just too small for roller bearings. It's probably over kill but I change my engine oil every 2,000 miles using Harley conventional oil. It is blended with higher levels of Zinc and phosphorus which further protect the roller bearings. I also run gear oil in the transmission. Here either synthetic or conventional as long as it's gear oil. Your XL cannot use gear oil because the clutch and transmission share the same oil.
What molecule size does HD specify?
My S&S 124 (with cam plate & oil pump) runs at 250 degrees and that’s WITH an Ultracool fan assisted oil cooler but using regular dyno oil. Mild 585 S&S cams and low compression (116hp + 136tq).
When it was a stock 103, it ran at 230 degrees with no oil cooler while using synthetic.
Great content Gixxer as usual All the best brother from NZ 😎
Thanks 👍 You stay safe out there!
@@GixxerFoo Thanks brother unfortunately I had to drop my bike after a car cut me off I'm okay and my bike is in the shop those crash Bars on my RG saved me and my bike.
Have a great Xmas to you and your family.
Nine months ago I bought a 2003 Road King with just over 42,000 miles on it. According to the service records it had only had H-D Synth 20w50 since it was just a young pup. An inspection of the cam chain tensioners at 40,000 indicated little to no wear. I considered switching to a "better" synthetic oil (I've always ran Castrol MC full synthetic) but I decided to stick with the H-D since, so far, it seems to be working just fine. I'm going to check into the Jims fan. I live in the Black Hills so, except during the Rally, stop and go traffic is never an issue. I would like to, however, ride through Death Valley some day. (Maybe I'll take my Victory King Pin for that one) Thoughts?
Not a bad idea on that Jims fan, it would work great for the rally and it's pretty discreet too!
If you ever plan on riding around Death Valley, you're not doing that mid summer when temps are 115+ every day or you'll kill yourself and your bike. I've ridden Death Valley numerous times. Best time is around March to April when temps are 80ish or so. Get into May and temps are hitting the century mark. Death Valley is beautiful and great riding.
Don't go to Death Valley in the summer since it's a lot cooler in the winter.
I got the love jugs mini mites thunder Max oil cooler fan Bel-ray Oil by M8 114 runs between 207 and 212 degrees I'm happy with that and that's in the heat of the day
Removing the back pressure and the heat produced around a 10 degree temperature drop. A low restriction air intake system along with a slightly fatter fuel mixture took roughly 12 to 14 degrees temperature drop. Oil cooler along with the extra oil volume bumped 20 to 25 degrees more temperature drop. This doesn’t make much difference in town but on the highway under normal conditions I get 35 degrees drop. So all said and done I now run 190 to 210 degrees not 215 to 250. Oil stays clear and smells better between changes. My 2016 103 HO puts 84 HP and 106 FT LBs at rear wheel. Runs smoother, pulls way stronger than the numbers would indicate. When stock the numbers were 75 hp and 88 ft lbs torque. Fuel economy is actually a little better as it takes less throttle to get up to speed. Cruise in sixth got better as hills don’t bother it anymore. I am very happy with the results and no need for more power. Reliable and not stressed!!
I ride year round in texas. My 2011 softail hasn't been over 250 degrees in the heat of the summer. I haven't done a thing to it.
That's impressive considering most Twin Cams run really hot! But no two engines are alike, sounds like you got a good motor in that bike.
Always good stuff, brother! I like using the newer 60 weight Amsoil year round (I live on the gulf coast). and I have the lifetime re-usable oil filter that has the built in cooling fins. I also use a heavy breather air cleaner in-take. The right oil cooler would be good. The most important to me is using synthetic motor oil.
I run Ams oil and just bought a jeggs oil cooler that I’m going to install and also I bought a remote washable oil filter hopefully this will bring down the temperature on my 2021 Triglide.
great channel thanks for the great Tips!!! love jugs are amazing I have worked with them on many applications .BUT If your Harley has cylinder fin extenders (decorative piece) REMOVE THEM !!!! they install In the spark plug area they look nice but it blocks the air from flowing through the port in the head, that port is there for a cooling reason L.J. are more effective pushing air through THOSE PORTS in the heads.Oil coolers are great also ,I just can't handle all the plumbing. And the oil filter adapters always end up leaking .Also breathers pushing the HOT oiled misted air back through the heads is horrible & dirty !!!!! for $10.00 at your local hardware store you can eliminate this heated oil MESS......that oil mist makes a thick film on the pistons, Harley found a cheap way to please the E.P.A.
Just curious but if you have an older bike without led lighting can switching to led help with temps too? Now the bike doesn't have to work as hard to power the lighting.
I've done that myself on some older bikes, upgrading the lighting helps quite a bit!
I run the HD syn 3 in all the holes on my dyna. I figure I better not cheap out on oil for the best thing I own.
I run it in my Engine but Run HD heavy Syn 80/140 in Tranny and Primary since it has a longer life span..
It's not bad at all, the new synthetics are able to be certified for not only engine duty but can handle the stresses of primarys and transmissions.
You would be doing your bike a favor and ditch the syn 3 and go with bel-ray or amsoil for engine and primary then go with some Spectro, redline or belray gear saver for the trans
@@Tberg725 thanks, I'll look into it. I wanna make this bike last as long as possible.
Those air cooled hot motors are done, the heat of the Harley Davidson evolutions and twin cams wore engines out over time unless your a highway speed rider and installed a fan assisted oil cooler on a M8 motor. As of 2021 the new revolution max engine is liquid cooled which is something V twins have been missing out on for decades.
Thanks for the info I’m in Australia and running a 120r motor in my 2008 fat bob and it gets HOT I am currently looking at oil coolers and probably will put one of those finned arrangements on the filter also. On the weekend riding when 35 degrees Celsius, it felt like my inside thigh was going to burn, and I’m sure it’s why it stalled and wouldn’t start, fuel was probably vaporizing. Gots to cool it down! Once again thanks
Dang l imagine that 120r is hot down there! Oil cooler will make it feel liquid cooled after riding it without one.
