    after 118 years of making mc , you would think the co. would have it down as far as eng heat goes. we the consumer have to buy tuning mods. coolers, better exhaust, air intakes, deflectors, a better oil pump, special hi-end oil, and all kinds of eng mods just to get them running decent. i sold my bike and brought a mule, the bastard goes everywhere in all weather. my biggest expense was a saddle & blanket. no ins cost or regerstration fees. if i get hungry i can bbq him and eat!

      Yep, it is unfortunate all the regs put on HD by the EPA....they have to run hot, which is not good.
      It also does not help that HD being public answers to their shareholders for short term profit.

    I have already done a lot of the mods in this series. 2014 FLHTP stage 1, catless head pipe, external breather, 20-50 Mobil 1, removed left side shield. On a recent 100 degree two up ride my Powervision ET was at 265 which didn't seem too bad. Looking to get an oil temp dipstick and maybe your filter relocation kit and straight 50w for my next oil change. I remember in the 70's and 80's everyone ran 50 or 60W.

      @DKCustomProducts  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Greg, yeah, that temp is not bad for a hot 100* day and some aggressive riding...it would be preferable for it to top out around 250, but it is MUCH better than the temps you would be getting in stock condition.

    Really enjoying the content / info in these videos guys as I've owned my Street Glide for a bit over 5 years now and (regrettably) never really payed too much attention to operating temperatures and things like that until this year.
    After a few hotter than normal riding days (for Australia anyway); I started to take note / keep a record of oil temperatures and have been looking into ways to help keep those temperatures them as low as possible.

      @DKCustomProducts  Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah, when we discovered how much heat they add in warm weather it was a real bummer for me too...cause they are really good at reducing buffeting. That is when we sat down and said there must be a way to reduce buffeting AND cool the engine instead of heat it up. After a lot of experimenting we came up with the CDW's that you can see at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/cooling-deflector-wings-for-touring-trike-models-dk-cdw-trg.htm

      @@DKCustomProducts Thanks. I have a few of your products now - tank lift and oil catch can for air cleaner - not sure I would like these on the road king. I think they blend better with lower fairings. What I can't figure out is why the road glide (which I have) wind deflector kit won't work for the road king. The 2 bikes are in different locations so I can't take mine off the RG and try it on the RK but it does not show as compatible for the RK. It just snaps on to the engine guard and the tank bolt mount. Although I am not sure it would look any better than your CDWs

      @@DKCustomProducts I'll give a closer look. I hope this isn't inappropriate but when looking at a few videos for tips on the tank lift kit (I was having aftermarket seat fitment issues) I ran across this guy that said he didn't notice any wind buffeting difference and basically gifted the CDW's. about 3:15 is the reference
      czcams.com/video/yrhhQiM9Uws/video.html

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Před 4 lety +2

      @@RideAmerica Completely appropriate. The CDW's reduce buffeting for the vast majority of folks that use them. Every now and them (about 1 out of 100) we hear from someone that reports they did not experience a reduction in buffeting. There are several possible reasons-
      Installed incorrectly - not at the correct angle or upside down.
      Everyone is a different height, sitting differently on the seat (and different seats), different windshields, different sunglasses, different helmets, etc. All these variables will have an affect on buffeting.
      Unrealistic expectations. CDW's do not eliminate the air hitting the rider in the chest or helmet. They do reduce the amount of air. So with most folks it reduces buffeting, but does not eliminate it. Although we have hundreds of reports that it eliminates it, the reality is that it probably only reduces it to the point that it is not bothersome.
      The Fork Wings (Fangs) will reduce the air hitting the rider More than the CDW's. (The problem being they also reduce the amount of air cooling the engine). This can also play into expectations of how much the CDW's will reduce the air hitting the rider.
      CDW's primary purpose is redirecting a large amount of air to flow over the engine, cooling it. A very nice side benefit is the reduction (not elimination) of air hitting the rider that can cause buffeting.
      All the best as you find what works for you, in your situation.

    Great common sense approach to these issues! Thank you for taking the time to share your insights. Question: H-D sells a fan option that mounts low and behind the back cylinder. Does it do what they claim? It supposedly sucks out that dead air that gets trapped back there. Also, if it works, do the thigh deflectors make it work better? Thanks again!!

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Před 4 lety +3

      The purpose of that fan is to draw heat away from dead spot behind the rear cylinder so that it does not waft up and hit the passengers thighs. It is designed to do this when sitting still or moving slowly. There are mixed reviews on how well it does this. Some really feel a benefit from it, others not so much. If felt heat is the only concern (which is what this fan addresses) then I would leave both thigh protectors in place when using that fan. We have found that by reducing actual heat it will not only benefit the engine, but will also reduce felt heat.

    @FFL-vg9ro Před 2 lety +1

    I removed the right air deflector, so the air flows left to right across the rear of the engine, in the same direction as the Love Jugs are blowing. Removing the left deflector would be pushing air right to left against the Love Jugs

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Před 2 lety +1

      If that works for you, that is great.
      I like to remove the left side. The air flows with less impedance that way, it comes out behind the fans, and keeps the protector on the hotter side of the engine.

      The way to tell if you would like Your bike with the tank lifted should take about 15 minutes-
      1. With bike on kickstand, take the bolt out of the front of your tank.
      2. Loosen (do not remove) the bolt(s) at the rear of your tank.
      3. Turn your handlebars all the way to the left and raise the tank up your desired lift height to check for clearance issues.
      4. Turn your handlebars all the way to the right and raise the tank up your desired lift height to check for clearance issues.
      Be careful when lifting your tank, you do not want to hit against something (forks, handlebars, trees, blinkers, etc.) when checking for clearance.
      When checking for clearance, you can also step back and see if you like the look.

    on my 14 Ultra I could almost touch the header heat guard without gloves... almost... my 2020 RG tho.... when going to Sturgis (bought it a week before) my ankle was burning hot... like to the point that if I didnt have highway pegs I wouldnt be able to ride. I cant have my foot on the floorboard for more than 5-10 seconds. I could wiggle my foot to the edge but I am so close to having my foot fall off the floorboards its dangerous (about an inch of my foot is actually on the floorboard). even after swapping the exhaust and no cat, its SLIGHTLY cooler, but feels like the heat is about 2 inches higher on my leg but still to much to handle for long. and this is at freeway speeds, rolling around town like in Sturgis... thats just painful and torture.
    I am HOPING when I redo the cam soon that the new tuner will remap it a slightly bit more richer than the SE tuner will allow. looking at having to go to heat taping the header as well which I dont want to HAVE to do. I think Harley really needs to get it through their heads that cooling is essential. my dual cool 14 ultra was perfect, warm but never hot.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Před 3 lety

      Yep, some run hotter than others, but we've never seen one that does not run too hot out of the factory.
      Your cam and tune may help a little, but generally a cam makes things run hotter. The factory tune on M8's is already good (not great, but good) and the Dealership tune will add little to no cooling.
      I would check and make sure that the factory installed the correct tune.
      What we have found is that going step by step on the items listed in this video series is the best way to get the heat under control.
      Harley is not going to do it. The EPA wants/requires them to run them hotter.
      One things you can do to reduce felt heat on your ankle/leg is seen at this video...it is inexpensive and effective.

      I've wrapped the pipes on my Sporty, see photo's at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/titanium-exhaust-wrap-dei-reduced-heat-improved-performance-dk-dei-t35.htm
      It is very effective at cutting down the heat. I've never felt the need to on a bagger, however, we have many Customers that have on baggers and reported a significant drop in felt heat from the exhaust. There is definitely room behind the shield for a clean wrap job.
      There are a lot of folks that are against wrapping the pipes...because the wrap retains water and will cause rust/deterioration of the headers. Simple solution to that is to never park it with wet wrap/pipes. ie. don't wash it and then park it. Of course, when riding in the rain, or parked in the rain, can't be helped. I've had wrap on my Sporty for around 8 years and 30K+ miles and have zero issues with corrosion.

      -An air cleaner with an External Breather System. Not only will this cool it down it will help it run better and last longer.
      -A permanent Oil Filter. Runs cooler (less drag on the oil pump/engine), filters better, and is less expensive in the long run.

    condensation (water) boiils at 100c so you dont need or want your oil getting much hotter than that

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Před 2 lety

      Yes, and a lot of folks think if their oil temp, measured at the tank, does not hit 100C or 212F, that the condensation will not "boil off". But the oil is much hotter inside the engine, after it squirts on the bottom of the pistons, than in the tank.
      So if one is fortunate to have done what is needed to get the temps down, say to 200F on the oil. It will still boil off the water.

      @@erikmundell6056 Thanks for the info. Clearly 350F is not good, but with your 124 kit there could be far too many issues to go thru the process of elimination in youtube comments on why it is running so hot.
      The products you list all are putting more air flowing across the engine, as well as cooling the oil. It is impossible for additional air flow to not provide additional cooling. It is also impossible for additional oil cooling to not provide better cooling for the oil. The conclusion that they don't help defies logic, without those improvements you would be running even hotter.

    great videos, I've done just about all of your suggestions for cooling. The most recent was adding the mighty mite fans. I noticed that when running they push a fair amount of air around the back of the rear cylinder and out the right side. Up to this point I had my right thigh protector installed and my left removed as you suggested. But now I am wondering if this is the best configuration with the mighty mites. It seems that at CRUISING SPEEDS the right protector is pushing air out the left side while my mighty mites are trying to push air out the right side (fighting against each other). It seems that putting my left protector on and removing the right side would provide better air flow around the rear cylinder (at any speeds) with my mighty mites running. I do realize this will make the right side even hotter, but I do very little idle time which is when I feel it, and I'm really focused on getting ET on my freewheeler lower when I'm cruising because that's when my ET is the hottest. I do realize that the fans have the biggest impact when stopped in traffic but I saw your video that did show a 7 or more degree drop even at 60 or 70mph with the fans so that's why I purchased them. Thoughts on swapping the deflectors or any other ideas? Thanks again, Ron

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Ron, I have had the same thoughts regarding the fans and the thigh protectors. I may be wrong, but this seems to be our experience...at a stop or slow speed the right side thigh protector does not act like a scoop pulling air in to fight the fan flow of air. But it does help protect from the heat being pushed by the fan flow.
      At speed the thigh protector scoops enough air that it cause the fan flow of air to do a U-Turn at the thigh protector, creating even more air that is flow behind the rear cylinder and out the left side.

    Harley Davidson is "saying" it's normal, those high temperatures. I can tell you any air cooled aircraft engine, even running full synthetic, at least on my Rotax 912 IS motor air and water cooled engine, that 230F is where the warning temp starts, and 240F is where you're in the red and overheating the motor oil. Keep heating up the oil to 256F and Rotax demands a complete engine tear down and inspection of all bores, bearings, valves, EVERYTHING because the motor basically has lost it's air worthiness. Nothing has changed.... ask an Oil Tribologist what the limits are on oil temperatures... Much beyond 250F, you "cook" all the safety additive packages right out of the motor oil, and that's just asking for an engine failure of engine components inside being starved of the lubrication properties they need.

I was living in South Texas where 110 at 2pm is common, and wanted to dump the heat from the extra power. I also rum Mobile 1 V-Twin oil

    Harley should not release bikes that can’t maintain a proper temperature. If it needs an oil cooler, raised fuel tank, it should come from the factory that way. Just like their factory suspension ( especially baggers ) that suck. They charge a premium price so we should expect to get a superior product.

      I agree with you, but it just does not happen, for a variety of reasons. One of them is talked about in this video- czcams.com/video/rWOdQOtDv6A/video.html

      They could easily make it maintain a proper temperature if they were liquid cooled. Then of course Harley people would have a fit.

    Please tell me ...are you saying thigh protector? I am 67 yrs and what I think u are referring to is what I have always called a side cover...it is totally ridiculous to think we have to go to these extremes to keep from ruining our bikes...This will definitely be the last Harley I own...I never had a problem with my 06 Heritage or my 08 Dyna...

      Thigh protector, NOT side cover. Look at the 5:07 mark in the video. There is a piece of black plastic in front of the side cover, and behind the rear cylinder, that is called a thigh protector.

    I've got a 96-in twin cam with 78k on it that I haven't done a single damn thing to to cool it down. Your mileage may vary.
