I really like the poster in the background , that’s a nice pair of cut off jeans
I thought I was the only one, what was this video about?
Yep, we like it. 😃
Agree 100% 🤤
I kept having to rewind the video. Too distracted.
Trytttttttttttttttttt
At 75 yrs old , I've been riding Harleys for 60 years. Panheads , Knuckles , Shovels and Evolutions - used Kendal racing oil (Brad Penn recently )in all of them
with great success.
When I graduated to a Twin Can I used Mobil 1 20w50.
That is great. Glad that you have found an oil that works well for you! Thank you for commenting! 👍😎👍 MB
I’m a gas compressor mechanic we used some very expensive oil in Waukesha engines. Only changed the oil as per oil samples ( filters every 4000 hour ). When we did the scheduled overhaul, everything needed to be changed, everything was in terrible condition and dirty as hell. My opinion is I don’t care conventional or synthetic, change the damn oil. We did have one customer years ago that ran shaeffers oil in a 3521GSI Waukesha and that thing was beautiful on the inside.
Definitely! As long as the oil is lubricating and you change it regularly, that is what matters! Thank you for commenting! MB
I'm doing the oil in my harley for the first time, and this was an awesome answer to all my questions today. Thanks from your newest fan ! I'm heading into your other videos to keep figuring out what my bikes needs to be maintainedright, because roads ready is what is important to me ! I've learned one thing as an old guy, and that is a maintained bike isn't broken down on the side of the road !!! Nope, it's a proven fact !
Glad you found the video helpful! You are correct a well maintained bike running at optimal temps isn't going to break down hardly ever if ever!
Thanks for commenting! 😎 MB
I run either Mobil1, Amsoil or Red Line. They're all great oils and as long as you change your oil every 5,000 miles, you won't have problems with those oils. All three make the valve train run quieter for sure.
Good to hear, thanks for commenting!
Agreed
Red Line is my preference
Amsoil & Mobil 1 second
I have been using Amsoil since 2004 and my bikes has always worked great, been on many long trips and the oil has kept my bike's engine clean and running cool.
Thanks for the comment. Great to hear you are happy with your ride! 👍
I use Amsoil now. I’m always impressed by the results from switching from something I’m using to Amsoil.
I have researched oil analysis reports and test after test on all the oils and it seems like nothing beats Amsoil.
I run their 20w-50 in the motor and their Primary fluid in my primary. Felt like I put a performance transmission in after adding it. Amsoil has a CF rating too that no one pays attention to and that’s very important.
Thank you for your comment! 👍
Used Amsoil for back in the day but found a better one a few years ago witch is Bel-Ray afterr seeing a display at a bike show years ago against top ones like Amsoil, redline etc. and been very happy.
Thanks for the info!
I recently learned that while Harley says Syn 3 in all 3 holes, you actually need a heavier Gear oil in the transmission. This is especially true if you suffer dreaded "5th Gear Whine". I agree that the Stealership is not necessarily your best source of maintenance information, since they would prefer you just buy a new bike every year.
While it is not necessary to run gear oil in the trans, most find it shifts better and quieter when you do. Here is a video of me trying out the new HD gear oil...I am liking it...it seems to be right up there with redline.
czcams.com/video/1Ml7HP4jHkE/video.html
I run Schaeffer in all 3 holes. The top end seems quieter to me with the Schaeffer. I run their transmission and primary oil because I can get it all at the same place. I've run Amsoil, in fact, I was a dealer for years, but I tried Schaeffer and switched to it after hearing the difference.
Thank you for the comment. 👍 Yeah, I like the Schaeffer oil, I only ran it in the engine...never tried it in the primary or trans.
Its good oil
Its excellent but 2 expensive imo
Mobile one in all of my vehicles. Have pulled valve covers off of Silverado this year have had it since new in 2007. 80,000 miles and the inside of the cover was pristine. That convinced me.
Very nice!
was advised years ago by a old classic engine builder the detergent oils proved their value by the conition of the engines they
seen inside after any disassemblys
That’s funny. I worked with a guy with a twin cam. He ran amsoil and when packing his girlfriend on a 200 mile trip alongside another twin cam riding solo using different oil. After a long weekend ride together, my guy would always tell us how impressed he was that his bike was much quieter than his friends.
Certainly some oils work better for quieting down some bikes. As long as your oil is lubricating the internals you really can't go wrong. Thanks for commenting! MB
Tks for the content. Off brand 20/50 “full synthetic” in all 3 holes. Quiet top end. Smooth shifting. Good running 05 RK. Ride safe everyone
Thanks for the contribution. Good to hear you have your bike running smoothly! 👍
Hey guys, just subscribed today because I'm going to switch over to external breather. I've run Syn 3 when my 2012 FLHTK was under warranty. I switched to Mobile1 20-50 in all 3 holes, had top end clatter. Switched to Amsoil with no problem. Tried RedLine, loved the ShockProof in the trans. When I used RL Primary Fluid I experienced an awful noise like the compensator was trash. I drained and install Amsoil 20-50 and the noise went away, get this while draining the RL my garage smelled like I took a poop. Maybe bad oil. I'm back with Amsoil, but staying with Shockproof in the trans. I'm going Spectro in all holes next. Just my $.02...
Thanks, glad you enjoy them. Yeah, I've had some strange smells with different fluids in the primary also.
Post up what you think of Spectro after running it. Would like to know.
PS: :Love your products and your concern for the riding public, Thank you !!
Thanks man, appreciate your business and super happy to hear you're enjoying them!!! 👍
Nice to hear a non biased opinion. My preference for every thing combusting is Amsoil full synthetic. V twin for v twins. Not sure if this is true, but i heard a reliable rumor that Harley Oil and Amsoil are made by the same company. Thanks for the video! Getting a quality filter is pretty important also in my opinion.
Both are great lubricating oils! Glad you like the video.
Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I'm a fan of shaffers oil and there transmission
Guys, I have to say I do like the fact you don't just give opinions, but you say why and you quote the science and facts and experience. And sometimes if it doesn't matter then you say it doesn't matter. This winter I'll be installing tank lifts and maybe a couple other mods to cool the bike.
Thank you, appreciate the kind words, and that you are finding the videos useful/interesting.
Thanks for your business, and always feel free to email or call with any questions.

Well done guys. I hung around for the outtakes
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks!
Great video. Thanks! I agree about top end clatter using Amsoil & Mobile 1, I've experienced the same. I like Red Line as well however have add great results using Klotz engine, trans & primary.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. Never had heard of the Klotz Synthetic Oil. Just went and looked at their website. Thanks for the tip.
@@DKCustomProducts sure, you bet! Klotz V-twin line is very popular, I ran there engine 25w60 along with there trans/primary fluids, ran smooth as silk with all combined fluids.
I have been using Amsoil since 2016 with great results , thanks Kevin for the video
Thanks for your comment! 👍
I am hooked on Amsoil. And the best thing is that my local H-D dealership sells it and I can get my military discount on it, instead of ordering it online and not getting a discount.
Good deal!
My 2021 Road Glide Special came from the factory with an oil cooler yet without a fan on the oil cooler. I added the fan, then overpaid my dealership to get online with the ecu and turn on the fan. I don’t know how necessary that was but I feel good about having it.
Important thing is to keep that oil from going over 230 F. 👍
Just seeing this video so I’ll add this comment I seen a test between H-D Syn-3 oil versus Amsoil they did a spinning steel balls test in their oils and brought the temperature of the oil to highest extreme temperature. They showed at that temperature a engine would of exploded. So they shut down both testing machines inspected the steel balls for scuff marks. The steel balls in Harley oil showed strong visible scuff marks and the balls in Amsoil showed a faint scuff mark. Harley doesn’t make their oil, Amsoil does. That convinced me to go with Amsoil
Thanks for your comment.
Amsoil does not make any other brand oil. They only make Amsoil branded oil.
@@penmakerar You misunderstood what he said. He said basically Harley-Davidson doesn't manufacturer their own oil they have a third party make it with their specifications. Amsoil on the other hand makes their own oil there's no third party.
Amsoil all the way!!
Not my first bike, but my first Harley. I just did the 1000 mile service myself on a 2021 Road Glide. I used the HD heavy gear oil in the transmission, Formula + in the primary and Mobil 1 20w-50 in the crank case. I can tell you the trans is like butter. The shifts are smooth and no noise. I read a lot of the internet Oil Guru's opinions before making those decisions.
Been hearing a lot of good about the new HD Gear OIl, going to give it a go. Thanks!
Great info fellas, running std. 20-50 in the 103 now. Years ago, 80's, I used Texaco Premium AD 50 wt. This was actually aircraft oil. Done a fine job. That FLH Shovelhead ran like a P-51 Mustang! Take care guys.
Thanks for sharing
This year I used Redline engine, primary and transmission fluid. Did so last year as well. So far so good.
Thanks for your comment! 👍
Weekend warrior here. Use the Mobile 1 oils in the engine and primary with one caveat that I add Lucas additive to the engine. Since it sits all week and sometimes two, the lucas helps keep the top lubricated during start ups. For the transmission, use a Mobile gear oil as that seems to give me less clunkier shifts.
Thank you for the comment. 👍
I use syn 3 in my 2003 softail and 2012 sportster engines. Very happy with it. A few years ago I started using synthetic 3 in my primary in my softail and like you I noticed a big difference. The clutch operation was much smoother. I couldn't believe it. In the transmission I switched to red line years ago and I am sold on it. I tried syn 3 years ago in the transmission and I didn't like it. I started using the 80/140 in my sportster transmission/primary and I like it better than the standard oil that harley has.
Thanks for the comment. Great to hear you are happy with your ride! 👍
I'm about to do my 1k service this week on my '21 Road King Special. I'm going to use Syn3 in the engine and the HD synthetic heavy gear oil in my trans and primary. I will keep using these until my 2 year warranty is up. I've heard about Harley denying warranty claims based on other oils "not meeting their specifications". After my warranty expires, I'm switching to Redline and sticking with it.
Yeah, their specifications are pretty broad. Redline "meets their specifications".
But you are not going to damage anything by running Syn 3.
Regarding the silly warranty that HD has, you may find this video interesting/useful- czcams.com/video/p8U4XsHyBugh/video.htmlttps://czcams.com/video/p8U4XsHyBug/video.html
I only have 2900 miles on my 2020 Road King but changed out the transmission fluid and replaced it with Redline Shockproof. A huge difference in shifting ease and now get into neutral on the first try every time. When it comes to the primary I'll be trying a quality MA2 approved oil as used in wet clutch bikes of all brands.
Thanks for the comment. Enjoy Your Ride!
I run Harley primary y transmission fluid in my 06 heritage and never had a problem with neutral or any gear
Engine oil is my question,, why would I run mobile 1 or amsoil synthetic when you guys said you had more top end noise? Also those are all expensive oils, red l I ne amsoil mobile 1
Been using Royal Purple in transmission and either Amsoil or Mobil 1 in engine and primary. I will typically change trans once for every 2 primary / engine oil changes.
Thank you for the comment. 👍 I've used Royal Purple quite a bit, good stuff.
I've always use HD Syn3 in the motor/ primary and Red Line w/ shock proof in the trans in my 2010 Ultra Limited since new except 1 time I won a amsoil oil change package and had the top end rattle like you described and the Red Line really helped on shifting. I now have 97K+ miles. On the wife's 2018 Tri Glide I've been using Syn3 in the motor and the NEW HD heavy gear oil in the Trans/Primary after the HD update for the fluid transfer with the little hose.... been shifting great for her.
That is great. Thank you for the comment.
Good to hear from another Rider of Miles out there.
I've heard really good things about that new HD Heavy gear oil. Gonna be trying it soon.
I read many forms a while back and compiled a large set of data with recommendations. I came with similar results. Mobile 1 vtwin in the crank case, syn 3 in the primary, and redline antishock I'm the trans.
@@barcharmc6216 Thanks for sharing. Glad you're liking that combo.
Just changed my father's bike out for Lucas 75w-140 made for Harley transmissions. It is significantly quieter, significantly smoother shifting, and dad no longer reports having issues finding neutral (we confirmed it was not an internal issue with the transmission).
That is Great! Glad you found an oil that is working great for your dads bike! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
Nice video! My 1999 FLHR Screaming Eagle 95 I run... crankcase: Mobil1 Synthetic 15W-50... Primary: RevTech... Tranny: Lucas, Mobil1 or Castrol gear oil 75w-90... I have used Redline, and I like it, but expensive. I have fine shifting with the Lucas, Mobil1 and Castrol.
Thank you for your feedback.
Sounds like a sweet ride!
Now running TriboDyn. I had been using Amsoil before my stage 2 and liked it very much. However, I noticed a temp increase after the swap, so I decided to give full-syn TriboDyn 20-50 V-twin m/c oil a try. Runs quieter and is about 6 degrees cooler than my Amsoil temps. An added bonus is increased fuel mileage at an average of 48+ mpg without hammering. BTW, keep your oil level about halfway on the dipstick as the service manul states for the best fuel mileage. TriboDyn has a unique blue color too. A University study showed that it outperformed all other oils, and I am now a believer. The price is about the same at $19.95 a quart. Hope this helps someone.
Never heard of it. Thanks for the info. Gonna give it a go. 👍
Thanks for your honest and unbias opinions. I was so confused watching different videos about what oil to run in my Harley (2019 RGS). I finally decided to go with Syn 3 in the motor and I did try the Harley gear oil in the transmission and the primary. I figured that if I stick with the oil that Harley recommends I can't go wrong. So far after almost 5000 miles I haven't had any issues with my transmission and primary. The transmission actually does seem less clanky.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for commenting!
I started with Amsoil 3 hole, then started doing my own work on my Fat Boy, stayed with Amsoil with moderate blow-by using DK Catch Cans. Then got my Road Glide in 2023, the Blow-by was excessive…should have taken it back but discovered the issue after two months of riding. Chris at Cycle Solutions put RedLine 20W-60 in my crank case and I haven’t looked back because it reduced my Blow-By. Changed to RedLine ⚙️ for my trans and discovered the bike has the migration issue where transmission oil is sucked into the primary…I never noticed it before using same oil.
Just installed an Evolution Industries Stage 1 clutch pack, which calls for ATF Type F. Still have Pepto Bismol coming through the clutch adjuster. Waiting on heads from JET Johnson Engine Technology, so can’t give a review of the new oiling set up.
SilverBAK has DK Custom Catch Cans on T-Man Air Cleaner, and NICECNC Trans Top Cover.
My ability to diagnose issues with my bikes has grown with time in the saddle, wrenching, and using specialized oils. Thanks for the video, good advice never gets old.

Great video I agree use what you like change it when you should and use a good filter. The one thing that is for sure is the price is not going to go down, kinda like the price of a new Harley😂
Glad you enjoyed, & Thank you for the comment. 👍 Yep, prices on a lot of things are on the rise.
used different ones over the years from Kendall in my pan heads to redline in my twin cams and found Bel Ray has been the top one so far, after watch a demo at a bike and boat show years ago & sent a sample to black stone with good results. But I always keeping an open mind as the industry changes.
BelRay is good oil. I may give it another whirl this next year.
Thanks for your comment, appreciate it. 👍
I'm running Rotella T4 15W-40 in my Sportser, both holes. I'm in Wisconsin, so we don't get very hot here. On the back it says its JASO MA2 rated. Seems to help it run quieter, and its cheap so I'm happy.
👍😎👍
I’ve used syn 3, Mobil 1, Amsoil, and HD 360 in my Harleys. Valvoline in import bikes. Idk they all seem about the same. Been using amsoil pretty exclusively for a couple years now but honestly doesn’t matter to me that much.
Glad you are happy with well lubricated oils. Thank you for commenting! MB
I like J&P oil change in a box. It comes with everything, but you need to buy 1 extra primary every 3 changes. I prefer synthetic because it seems to be a little more quiet. I do however just change all of it at once because I love my bike.
Thanks for the comment!
I run Amsoil because of the independent testing, and they seem to focus on the application for each of their different oils. I think overall maintenance, quality of gas, and driving habits are ultimately what matters. If you take care of your bike and treat it right, I'm convinced that O'Reilly store brand would be just fine.
Good add, Thanks for sharing! 👍
Havoline 10w-40, non-synthetic works as well as any of those overpriced brands
@@johnswanson3741 no it doesn't
I agree with just having fresh motorcycle oil changes. I personally been using Spectre motorcycle oils and my 06 Roadking Custom runs awesome.
Thanks for sharing! That is a good oil. 👍
My nearest Harley dealer's 3 hours away so there oils out. But I can get Amsoil locally so I use there specific oil for each hole. I bought some Redline shock proof for the Trans but still leary on trying it. As a side note I run Mobil in everything else on the farm but when I contacted my supplier was informed Mobil 1 for motorcycles was no longer available in Canada.
Thanks for your comment! 👍 Interesting on the Mobil 1 in Canada.
Ya I had trouble hearing u too .young fellas clear as day . This was one of yr better vids, all are good. Though. Amsoil is best for me . Been using it for 15 years or so. Keep up the good work u guys.
We are working on it. Thank you for the comment. 👍
I have used syn 3 in the past and switched to Royal Purple about 15 years ago and never had a single issue. I read all the reviews on Amsoil so I thought I would try it. Well 3000 miles later I lost two lifters and two pistons. Coincidence maybe but the only engine work I had done from the year before was a camshaft and lifter replacement. I always replace the cam bearing and lifters if I change the cam.
I can tell you that I will be going back to Royal Purple.
I run spectro 6 speed oil in my transmission and Royal Purple in my primary case.
Man, sorry about your engine. Thanks for sharing your experience. Royal Purple is good oil!
Good advise on all points , summer riding needs heavy oil, winter riding use lighter...especial with an oil cooler.
Thanks for commenting! 👍😎
Been running Syn 3 since 2002. Bike has served me well thus far. I have about 64000 miles on the bike. In 2015 when I worked at a dealership I had them change my pushrods from quick connect to solid. When they had the top end opened up the tech said it was clean. Additionally, when I switched from Conventional to Syn 3 my oil temperature dropped significantly. Finally, the only noise that I pay attention to is the rumble from my exhaust.
Glad you found an oil that is working for you! Thank you for commenting! MB
I think Kevin is right, the key is decent oil from one of several brands changed on time. Because of DK's comments on oil temps even in twin cooled like mine (my M8 can hit 254 deg F on super hot days), I'm with Amsoil engine, Amsoil Trans, Amsoil Primary. The latter two are specific formulations and work fine. Amsoil has been shown to stand up to high temps (at least for a while). I don't trust Harley's smaller or different oil pump on the twin cooled vs regular M8 to install an oil cooler, so I'm just going to change to the reusable higher flow filter for now (just post warranty on my bike). At 4000 oil miles plus, the top end start up clatter seems more pronounced even with Amsoil. I always change at or before 5 k miles. I use HD Lucas Stabilizer at 20% engine only and that quiets the engine clatter at startup dramatically due, most likely, to film coating. Red Line's high moly formulation does the same. I have the oil test kit and will test at next change.
Good add, Thanks for sharing! 👍
I have a friend that sells Amsoil I run it in my Harley, Ford F-250 Powerstroke and my Hustler zero turn I’ve had very good luck with it. Thanks for the videos.
I Really Doubt an Oil that's Used in Everything is as Good as an Oil Specifically Designed for a Particular Task..Syn 3 in my 114 M8 Engine and HD heavy gear oil 80/140 which has a Much Superior Viscosity and Lifespan than 20/50 for my Primary and Tranny.. Zero Oil burn or Shavings at my 2nd oil change.. Everything bout the 80/140 is Awesome ,Yes other oils are good Also.
I didn’t mean that l use the same oil in them all just the brand I used the specific oil for all the applications!
Thanks for your comment! 👍
I know this is a year old as I am viewing it. I ride a 2012 RK 103” TC. I run Lucas in the crankcase. And redline in the transmission. I am in the N.E. Area. I ditched the Syn 3 a long time ago due to my opinion that it poured like water and wondered how it could maintain lubrication. I do have the top end clatter the dealer did try redline with a a set of lifters. But I never found the noise to quiet.
Those are just my thoughts. But what it comes down to is like you said as long as it’s lubricated with proper application.
You are running some good oil.
Most of the time the source of the top end clatter is the rocker arm shaft ticking against the rocker box bolts. There is an inexpensive solution that you can see at this link-
www.dkcustomproducts.com/rocker-lockers-for-harley-davidson-twin-cam-motors-dk-rl-tc.htm
I agree, I don't use syn3 because there is no information on the label to support the cost difference between other oils
I hear ya.
2016 FLTRXS, Amsoil in the 1 & 2 hole, Redline in the 3 hole. Always have, always will. Helps me sleep at night.
Thanks for your comment. Can't go wrong with that.
My 2000 wide glide now has 88,000 miles. I started using amsoil at the 5000 oil change. The valve train is as quite as other twins with half the mileage. So the Amsoil has to be doing a good job of protecting the engine.
Thanks for sharing
Yep,
ATF in Primary.. I find it helps with clutch hookup under high load and revs...
Aussie brand engine oil "Penrite racing" (Ten tenths) range FULL Synthetic... (Not like Syn3 which is only 60% synthetic)
Trans I have used Redline shockproof.. the best by far for smoothness, if not available I'll use Penrites gear oil which is a super smooth running oil also.
Great vid, cheers
Thank you for your comment.
Great info you shared, we appreciate it! 👍
Awesome your videos I have been learning so much and I appreciate when I comment you guys always you know give me an answer on questions that I have👍 also I have known people to use regular conventional motorcycle oil and change it you know regularly and got a150,000 miles out of it! Knowing people to use synthetic oils and also got 150,000 miles plus with not a lot of problems with just you know regular maintenance done!! So I might just come down to you know how well you take care of your bike and how often you change your oil🤔
Thank you for the feedback. Very good to hear that you are enjoying the videos. 👍
Agreed, taking care of the bike with regular maintenance and preventative care is probably more important that what brand oil is used.
I WISH, I could find a youtube video addressing older bikes and oil. Especially EVO's. I'm still looking.
The Evo is has pretty much the same requirements as the Twin Cam and the M8, as addressed in this video. The one thing is that the Evo is a bit more particular in having the correct viscosity oil for the ambient temperature it is being ridden in.
Thanks for commenting! MB
I have owned several Harley’s and still have my 1986 FXST and used nothing but Harley oil, I split the cases one time on the softail just too have the cases powder coated the lower end crank bearings were still like new just put it back together and we’ll over 30 years later still going strong.
I run Mobil 1 in engine , HD Formula + in primary and Redline w/shock guard in tranny . I have used Valvoline Dino motorcycle 20/50 in law enforcement primary . I’d change it about every 3 or 4 k miles due to competition riding and practice. Never any issues with stator or clutch , some bikes have 60 k miles . They smoke a clutch every now and then reguardless what primary oil I used . Key was getting burned oil out .
Great combo and advice. Thank you! 👍
17 limited with a stage 4 kit. I use redline oil, primary, transmission. Also use flo reusable filter. My thoughts redline is top shelf. Thanks for the video guy's
Glad you enjoyed it. Agree, Redline is great! 👍
Great video Kevin. I have an iron 883 2017. where I live it is difficult and very expensive to use specific oils for air-cooled motorcycles. If you can get the oils for "Japanese" motorcycles (motul, castrol, mobil, valvoline but nothing for v twin). They say that these oils cannot withstand the pressures and temperatures of our harleys. So what oil would you recommend using in this case? Oil for diesel as recommended in the manual in case of not getting the HD? Do you know what is the PACKAGE OF SPECIFIC ADDITIVES USED IN OILS FOR AIR-COOLED MOTORCYCLES? thanks. I wait for your help. Greetings.
I've used Castrol 20-50 and Valvoline VR1 20-50, both with good results. Just change a bit more frequently.
One of the best things you can do for your oil is not let your engine get too hot. Here is a series we did on keeping the temps down. It is primarily about Twin Cams and M8's, but all the principles apply to Sportys also. We specifically address Sporty temps in the first few minutes of 5th video in the series- czcams.com/play/PLb3bvZgbH92_3s-2vv63QggFJ3nteFd_C.html
Also, can you not get deliveries from Amazon where you are? That is where I get most of my oil.
Lucas 20/50 syn in engine and ATF Type F in primary. Runs great. Xlh1200 with Barnett Kevlar extra plate clutch
Thanks for the add. 👍
I use Amsoil after using it in my Moto Guzzi 1200 Griso and it silenced what is a very noisy bikes top end. I like its sheer strength and the fact it maintains viscosity no matter them temps.
Good to hear you are happy with it in your Moto Guzzi.
I have a 97 Electra Glide Evo motor. I run spectro 2050 weight standard oil non-synthetic. Bell Ray in the transmission spectro primary oil is also what I use. These older bikes are different than the twin cams for sure! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for sharing 👍
I tried Amsoil full synthetic in my EVO motor and she did not like it. Seem like it had more power but idled rough and made a lot of noise. I was also concerned about the full synthetic causing some leaks further on down the road. It's great stuff in the newer bikes though just a message for those still riding the old iron horses!
7:00 Same here! I use SYN3 because I can take a quart of oil with me wherever I go, and if I need it in the transmission, the primary or the engine, I have it.
Awesome! I am glad you have found an oil that works for you. Thank you for commenting! MB
I use amsoil, amsoil trans and amsoil primary. I've used the harley gear oil and I found that amsoil makes the trans less "kluncky."
Thanks for your comment! 👍
That is what I want to quiet down.
Good video Kevin. I tried the NEW HD gear oil, not overly impressed with it
I think Redline does a better job of lubing the tranny
I just changed my 21 Freewheeler oil @ 820 miles to Straight 50 H D oil for the summer heat
I am NOT impressed with the NEW M8 oil filter, I cut it apart and was surprised to see the lack of paper media
Oh, thanks Jack. I was going to use the new HD gear oil on the next change. hmmm, maybe not now.
Yeah, I am not impressed with any of the throw away filters. Been using performance permanent filters for over 15 years now.
2018 M8 107 Sport Glide, some touring on it. Mobil 1 V Twin 20w-50 in engine. HD Heavy Syn 80w-140 in primary and gear box. The Heavy Syn really helps with ability to find Neutral on my bike, hot or cold, compared to HD performance Plus conventional gear oil. 1st-3rd have always been real clunker shifts on my bike, for some reason, up or down. 4th-6th much less noise.
Yes, I tried the Heavy Syn in the transmission also...I am impressed with it. Redline shockproof might still be my fav, but the Heavy Syn is right there with it.
Redline, It's proven it to me over and over.Only way to go for me.Thank you great video
It is great that you have found an oil that works for you! Glad you like the video! Thank you for commenting! MB
My dad and his dad were mechanics and have worked on every kind of motor, trany, and differentials that were on the road. I grew up hearing that a motor gets used to the oil that it's been getting. I'm 70+ yrs old and followed that advice with every vehicle I've owned, including my Harley. My current ride is a 2019 FLHR and I run HD full synthetic oil and will stay with that for as long as I ride it. I change it at the recommended interval and the cost is irrelevant. I got well over 100K on my last FLHR and was never disappointed with its performance.
Thanks for your comment! 👍 Yes, I have heard the same over the years, and I *believe* there is a certain truth to it. However, I am not sure that it is as applicable to more recently manufactured engines. But it never hurts to be safe.
@@DKCustomProducts You're absolutely right which is my reasoning with this new FLHR. However, I've only put 13K miles on it so it's just getting broken in. Time and miles is the best arbiter in most performance debates.
No matter what car or bike or boat you have if I take it for a ride, I can tell how fast you normally ride it. The vehicle seems to want to return to the speed it is used to. I just wish I knew why that is true? P.S. I'm getting close to 70yo too😊.
@@therepairpal4187 uh...ok
Technically if you do an oil analysis the only time you would need to change the oil is when it says the oil is no good. Change the filter at recommended intervals based on riding though. That takes too much time for me though, I generally just change it between 4K and 7K running Amsoil with the EAo filters. Bike lives in the redline and has never had any issues. 60K on a 2010 Vrod
Good add, thank you for sharing.
Great Video Guys , Oil is a very confusing subject , like You say there is so much brand loyalty out there . Hard to know which Brand is best . Keep'n learning everyday ...
Well said! 👍
Glad you liked the video.
I have a 01 fatboy!! I LOVE that clank sound it makes when I put it in gear!! Run mobile 1 in all 3. Bike runs amazing !!
Glad that you have found an oil that works for you! Thank you for commenting! MB
All these oils discussed are fine oils, Just keep oil level and clean. good vidio guys.
Glad you enjoyed, & Thank you for the comment. 👍
As important as the oil is, the filter is very important. I'd like to see a video on filters.
Agree with you 100%. For close to a decade I have been using the Performance Oil Filter shown at the link below. It filters better, and there is less drag on the oil pump, resulting in more power getting to the rear tire.
Here is a video about it- czcams.com/video/tWtO8J1xE5E/video.html

Been using Mobil 85-120 in the trans gear box for years. It makes a huge difference especially in the summer months.
Thank you for the comment. Agree 100% with you, running a heavier oil in the trans is a good improvement.
Dam right
What happens in the first minute from cold seems to make a difference with how the lifters hold up.
Idle too slow and low oil pressure under load doesn't keep the lifters pumped up?
Having threads in the sump would have been nice when I went to do my first oil change on a 25 year old twin cam, will be better prepared for the transmission and primary plugs if I find plumbers tape on the plug.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for commenting! MB
Loved the video! But please, for us graybeards, crank up the recording volume. I'm wide open & still have trouble hearing everything...
Me - I run Amsoil in the engine, Spectra Platinum (75W-140) gear oil, and RedLine V-Twin Primary oil in my '03 Road King. 18 yrs old and over 100K and still going strong! (Just added your EBS, so expecting another 100K! ;-)
have you inspected your cam chain tensioners ?
Good to read you enjoyed, and we appreciate your business. Yes, we are working on getting our volume up. Great to read about your ride serving you well!
I run amsoil had a oil cooler leak lost oil on interstate one pint in case changed oil no shavings sold HD at 85 thousand ran as good as new when sold
I use the new HD gear oil in my TC & have noticed the shifting to be less clunky and so much smoother. Syn 3 for the rest.
I have tried it out myself, both in the trans and in the primary.
In the Trans, it is right up there with Redline shockproof...in my experience.
In the primary, it may be the best things I have run in it.
Klotz mx4 15w50 in my '21yz450f. Belray 10w50 Vtwin in my '22 Triumph Speed Twin. Both full synthetic obviously. I've tried them all, and right now these oils are the best I know of. If your on a budget, Mobil Delvac both conventional and synthetic are very good oils.
Thanks for the info! 👍
AMSOIL 💯% as a dealer for 5+ years and a believer for over 8 years I use Amsoil in my trucks and bikes and use alot of the many products Amsoil has plus its easy to have it delivered to my door step and not make a trip to the store/dealership and I do my own service's
Sounds like you got it wired. More and more it is very convenient to get things delivered to your doorstep.
On another channel a Harley engine builder endorses Amsoil. If he tears them down & builds them up, he should know what works well. So it’s Amsoil for me. K&N Filters.
Thanks for your comment! 👍
I've been running Maxima oils. Full synthetic 20w-50 motor, syn primary oil, & 80w-90 mineral tranny oil. Their kit comes with their house brand filter.
Thanks for the comment. We have found that Maxima fork oil is the best of the fork oils we've tested. We may try out their engine oil.
The Primary is equal to an automatic transmission. I use AC Delco Dexron VI, works great and is dirt cheap. Redline Primary is automotive automatic transmission fluid. When I started using it over 35 years ago the container wasn't labeled for "V Twin".
Thanks for sharing. 👍
I've always used Lucas it seems to have a high rating for friction and temp
Lucas is a good oil. Thank you for sharing. 👍
I run Amsoil, however, I’ve heard many good things about redline, especially for transmission. Might try it, might not. Dealer gets $20 a qt for it. I get Amsoil considerably cheaper and have no issues. maybe one day I’ll try it for the hell of it.
I switched to redline after using amsoil. Tried motul last service and so far it holds up. Synthetic is best. Amazon delivers and $5 cheaper than dealers.
Thanks for your comment! 👍
Summit Racing and Jegs have Red Line for about $16 a quart. The 42804 transmission oil is about $19/qt.
redline oil is over rated but good it has additives in it that do not mix with common oils.if you decide to change over change your oil after 1000 mile again to flush your pervious brand of oil
I've tried different brands and settled on Mobil 1 20/50 in engine, redline tranny in gearbox and Amsoil primary in primary. My 18 Fat bob likes that combo.
Glad you have found an oil that works for you! Thanks for commenting! MB
You guys did a great, non opinionated video. Good advice. My feelings- just use a good quality branded oil and make your own judgement. All the brands you listed are fine. A good 20w50 engine oil or 75w140 in the Transmission and primary is fine. (Gear oil is measured differently so the numbers aren't apples to apples. 75w140 is about the viscosity of 20w50 engine oil.)
I've used Mobil 1 gear oil in primaries and transmissions of my Harleys and Buells for 15 years. no issues. ATF is fine in Primary. I've even used Shell Rotella or Mobil 1 diesel oil in engine before. I use it in my Japanese single cylinders.
Everything you said is good advice.
Glad you like the video!
Thank you for the information and for commenting! 😎👍
I use Lucas Oil Full Synthetic engine oil and HD Syn3 for primary for my 2016 Sportster Roadster with 10k miles, and happy with it, engine runs cool about 180deg with oil cooler. Now I am trying Redline for both engine and Primary. Time will tell..
Thanks for sharing!
2020 Road Glide Special 114 with Amsoil in engine and transmission with no noticeable difference from SYN3. SYN3 still in primary
Thanks for your comment! 👍
Spectro oil
I use the Lucas motorcycle synthetic in mine…. All three holes Because it’s at my local store. The nearest dealership is 1.5 hours away. Every time I’ve asked the old school guys what oil to use they have said “clean”. So I use the recommended viscosity oil that meets specs and I don’t really worry about it other than that
Thanks for your input. Appreciated.
Shell rotella t6 synthetic. All 3 holes. Also run it in my victory vision, semis, pickup trucks, tractors, generators, pretty much everything.
Nice! Thanks for commenting!
Amsoil 20/50 in the engine, Amsoil primary fluid in the primary, Redline with shockproof in the transmission.
Does sportster have a separate transmission oil or do we have just engine out and primary ?
it all comes down to changing it on reg intervals i use redline 20w-50 v twin im at 150 hp and redline works great with heat with redline the hotter the motor gets the more oil pressure it holds but i still change it at 2500 miles
Good info. Thanks. What bike and what mods for 150 hp. Must be a blast!
@@DKCustomProducts o it is 2020 m8 128
@@roncoburn7771 Very cool.
Regular oil changes are definitely important. Oil doesn't wear out. It just gets dirty/ contaminated. I learned working as an Engineer in the Navy, then continuing on in the Merchant Marine this important fact. Oil is cheaper than bearings...
Good add!!! Thanks for commenting! 👍
@DKCustomProducts You're welcome. Thank you for the good content.
Glad you are liking the videos!!!
Thank you for the video very informative. I have a 2000 Sportster xlh 1200. I put mobile one in for a while to get better lubrication so I thought. The parts person told me I could do that but I'm going to have more valve noise I'm going to find more oil in the air cleaner which is exactly what happened. Since then I went to Bel Ray 20w 50 mineral oil.
Much quieter.
My question is, what do you think about oil coolers particularly, for this application?
Thank you very much
Robert
Hi Robert. Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. You experienced the same thing I have when using Mobil One. I believe it lubricates just fine, no worries there, but more top end noise is what I experienced also. I don't get any oil in my air cleaner because I use External Breather Systems. See video on that here- czcams.com/video/EfDeFZblMck/video.html
Regarding oil coolers on a Sporty. Many do not need them, but some do. If your oil is running above 230* F, then I recommend an oil cooler. You can see a good selection at the following link. Also, if it is just running a bit hotter (no more than 260) then a 6 row will work. If hotter than that I would get a 10 row, and if lots of stop and go riding, then a 10 row with a fan. They can all be seen here- www.dkcustomproducts.com/sportster-c155.htm
We have a video series that is primarily about Twin Cams and M8's, but all the principles are the same for a Sporty if it is running too hot. You can see it here- czcams.com/play/PLb3bvZgbH92_3s-2vv63QggFJ3nteFd_C.html
Oil coolers work and are money well spent
A fully synthetic oil with scheduled oil changes outlined in your owners manual should suffice. Routine maintenance is key to extending engine life.
Great point!
viscosity make a difference too
Just stick with a name brand/ top tier motorcycle oil and you'll be fine
And maintain your intervals
However I feel if long super hot in traffic idling I will change it regardless
Good advice. I also shorten my intervals if there has been a lot of short rides, or really hot riding, or have been hammering on it a lot.
I run S&S 20W 50 synthetic in my S&S engine because that is what S&S recommended. They designed the engine and they warranty the engine so they have skin in the game. I use Spectro 6-speed transmission oil im my Baker Grudgebox and in my primary where I have a Baker compensator and Baker chain tensioner. That was what Baker recommended. I have a Rekluse clutch system that complied with Bakers oil recommendations.
Nice, it sounds like you have gotten a good combination figured out for your ride! Thank you for commenting! 👍
2008 SG. Amsoil engine and primary. Redline in transmission. HD filter. May switch to fram after watching HD vs Fram
Cool... Amsoil and Redline are always a great choice, Thanks for watching!
