Is Royal Purple better than Amsoil? Let's find out!

- Is Royal Purple's full synthetic 5W-30 motor better than Amsoil's 100% synthetic 5W-30 motor oil? In this video both products go head to head in several tests. Both Amsoil and Royal Purple are very high quality synthetic motor oils. I bought both of these products using my own money. I am not sponsored by Amsoil or Royal Purple, and I do not sell Amsoil or Royal Purple products. The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. I had heard royal purple was “the best” by some peoples anecdotes, and so I started using it in my vehicle. That new and “cooked” cold flow test really blew me away. I might be switching to Amsoil now
Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, I did the same.
I will still continue to use Royal Purple for its detergent/cleaning properties! Engines that are taken apart after using it are unbelievably clean! I have very strict "what to use, what not to use" issues with the BMW M4. I will always still remain mindful of making sure I always give proper warmup time. The cold flow also really surprised me! You cannot go wrong with either of them! More wear/tear will be done via driving style/use/proper abuse VS just coming down to which oil you choose!
In conclusion.. this guy goes all out with these tests and its freaking awesome seeing how large his channel and subscriber base has gotton! GREAT STUFF!
@@ProjectFarm Your testing runs with my findings. I bought a 2012 BMW Alpina B7 and alternated Amsoil and RP every 10k miles with a 3k washout in between using BMW recommended Castrol. I gave each oil 5 runs of 10k each so a grand total of 100k testing miles. Results were as follows: Amsoil consistantly had lower burnoff and less metals content in (ppm) than RP. RP had consistently better mpg and carbon buildup(visual inspection of cylinder heads) than Amsoil. I concluded at 140k that each of these oils "proprietary" blend is designed to do something different!!! Amsoil obviously has something in it that increases stability at high temps. RP obviously has something in it that reduces friction. Thanks for posting your findings!

I'm an Amsoil dealer. Royal Purple is GREAT oil. Its what I used to use before switching to Amsoil, which I did long before becoming a dealer
Thanks for sharing.
The thing is, with purple oil it's always going to look dark and I like to see clear, clean oil. It's one of the deciding factors for changing my engine oil even though it's not all that accurate an indicator.
Thanks for the feedback.
Agreed. My odometer has been broken since my manual trans swap and I always use the oil color as an indicator
That's exactly why I stopped using Royal Purple. You can't gauge how burnt or dirty it is, they should have tinted a light purple instead maybe???
And especially when I used Arco Graphite Oil a long time ago. But with the diesel we now drive, the oil turns black rather quickly!
Bro never check old oil life on the deep stick. Use a white paper towel. The color is just to identify from other liquid colors. 2nd engine wear shavings are easier to pick up with darker colors. You can't see the sparkles with the clear as good.
7:05 - WOW, haunted griddle! It's BREATHING!
Same word popped into my head, with the expansion and contraction of the heating elements over time.
I thought I was crazy at first. I'm glad you saw it too. I wonder what did that
must be the heater cycling and causing the surface to flex
Put a propane heater under a half inch thick plate and reinforced welding table it will do the same thing. Do it enough and you can warp your table.
Think of all the metal in your engine changing shape as the temperature changes too!

You have to use a Amsoil filter with the signature oils to get the Amsoil warranty (filters filter down to 20 microns that's why the oil can last 25,000 miles)
Not so much dirt as it is deposits from the combustion process.

When I used to build race cars and engines our shop Z06 right around 600whp and 550ftlbs. On the road course mobile 1 lasted 1.5 20 min sessions before breaking down and sending oil temps through the roof. Royal purple lasted 3-4 sessions and redline would go the whole day but not another track day. Amsoil lasted multiple track days including numerous top speed blasts, 1/4 mile passes and normal street driving.
MthrFknMike Signature Series?
@@matt7sixty yes the signature series. All new engines would get their break in oil for initial start, tuning and the first 500 miles. Then we would switch to the sig series.
MthrFknMike Have you tried the Dominator Racing Amsoil?
@@matt7sixty I have not. I don't think it was out at the time.
The problem I see with this test is he is using RP's entry level API oil and not their mid level or top line oils. Amsoil signature is in the top of Amsoils line up. RP now has HPS their mid level oil and XPR which is their full racing oil. the HPS is the stating point were you get their special additive, since they have been bought out. That means the cheaper API oil off wal-mart or box store auto parts stores do not come with Synerlec®. It also has higher zinc and other additives like the Amsoil.
I love your tests, because you really care about the test with a lot of thinking behind the camera

also the loss of oil after the temperature test was scored by total loss rather than percentage even though they both started with different amounts. Amsoil started with more so it had a disadvantage but it won anyways so no big deal.

Its because AMSOIL SIGNATURE SERIES uses (PAO base stock) mixed with an (ESTER base stock) the ONLY other oil brand to use ESTERs in 2019 is Redline, because of the extremely high cost, the issue is an ESTER oil by itself absorbs a lot of moisture much like brake fluid does. So for racing applications where the oil is changed daily or per race, its the best option for lubrication. But in the application of daily transportation you require PAO mixed with it to block the moisture out. A massive percentage of "synthetic" oils on the market are crude oil base stock heavily refined in a process called hydro-cracking(this legally is considered synthetic oil), a TINY percentage of the "synthetic" oils on the market are a mixture of PAO and ESTER base. Hence why AMSOIL is un-beatable in automotive transportation application, and machinery applications including; Jet engines. MOBIL 1 used to sell the same product as AMSOIL and did away with it, because the cost didn't yield enough profit margin. But true PAO and ESTER based oils have been around for a very very long time, but were 1st brought to the automotive market by AMSOIL and AMSOIL is the only company to continue selling it to this day in their SIGNATURE SERIES !ONLY! All other AMSOIL bottles are the same as Mobilone/Quakerstate/Castrol/Royalpurple/etc.etc.. In the sense they are refined crude oil, with a tiny fraction of real PAO base stock mixed in with an additive package, not real synthetic oil but thanks to Mobil 1's law suit it is legally considered "Synthetic oil" Thus to stay competative AMSOIL offers the same product at the increased profit margins like the other companies but maintains its "Signature line" with the original formula with modern additive packages. Hope that enlightens some people, the issue is with "synthetic blend" oils, because if it says "synthetic blend" on the bottle, there is no limits set to how much of the bottle needs to be synthetic or "hydrocracked" crude oil, so companies like Castrol, with their GTX synthetic blend sell a bottle with basically plain conventional oil (crappy at best) mixed with a tiny bit of hydrocracked crude oil to consider it a "synthetic blend" and then during tests if you look barely meet the minimal requirements. Hence why you see AMSOIL consistently in 1st and 2nd place, and not castrol. Or any other brand... unfortunately, because I ran Castrol for years. The same over priced oil that wasn't as the label led me to believe.
Interesting, then why does other AMSOIL oils like the XL etc still say 100% Synthetic on the bottle? And can you provide a link for the information you shared? Thanks! :)
What about schaefers?
That's great for stationary engines and race engines, but, will those esters foul catalytic converters and oxygen sensors? I have found in many cases, the cars that need to have emission control components replaced, are the ones that consume more oil. I think fouling by components of the oil play a bigger part, than how the car is driven, unless the driving causes higher oil consumption. I'm always trying to find information on line, to see if some EP additive does the same thing as tetra ethylene lead. I know that some oils use zinc for better lubricity, and that might be hard on emission components.
Dammit...I went cheap on my last Amsoil purchase by not getting Signature Series. I won't make that mistake again.
I submitted for an oil analysis on my used engine oil AMSOIL 5-30 OE series with 10,000KM and from the results the oil did not break down or wear out... it's also not worth the increased cost of signature series if your engine is older and burns oil more than usual per oil change, especially if you're following the manufacturers recommended intervals for service. the more expensive oil will evaporate away from defects in worn engines at the same rate that any other oil will.
Your reviews are the best and most helpful.
Thanks so much!
I use this channel to decide which engine oil to use, thank you!
You're welcome!
What about the cooked oil bearing test? How would being cooked affect the wear on the bearing? Fantastic comparison, as always. Keep it up!
Thank you for the video idea!
You've done this with other products, I imagine this video didn't have it because of testing limitations, not to mention the amount of time this must suck out of your life. It would be hilarious to have these 2 premium products tested in a batch with gas station conventional. Run down to QT or wherever and pick up a bottle of the sludge they have next to the counter and run it next to the big boys. I think it would give some good appreciation of "you get what you pay for"
Absolutely amazing videos man, thank you so much for the content!
That's an excellent suggestion
I would be okay in seeing the bearing test towards the end of the testing process/video also when you have both cooked and new oil.
Perhaps another variable would be to do the cook test / bearing test, then Ron the cooled oil through a filter and see if the bearing test changes.
Glad to see someone doing independent tests on the oils out there
Thank you. Thanks for watching.
There are so many independent tests on oil done in Russia I am returning to this video from one where Amsoil showed itself very very poorly in a more advanced and professional test
Thanks for your precious efforts
You are welcome!
Wow. Thanks Todd. I used to use royal purple in my work vehicles... my 91 f350 was still running strong when I sold it at over 500k kilometers on it. If I can find where to buy amsoil here in BC Canada I'll be using that from now on. I'll still use royal purple in my diff and trans in my e350 van though. Very impressive difference. Sure glad I have your videos to help make decisions.
Thank you!
Another superb test from the Project Farm. The oil evaporation test really was surprising!
Thank you
That's because he skewed the test!!!
You should test shell rotella since everyone that uses it in their gasoline engine swears by it
I use full synthetic in my 91.5 Dodge Cummins and gained 1/2 mpg running mountain interstate 18,000 lbs but our 96 5.9 gas didn't like synthetic so it gets 40 weight non synthetic and picked up 1 mpg but I do use Lucas oil additive synthetic and regular in both vehicles maybe overkill but they use less than 1/2 quart between 5000 mile oil changes and these vehicles are not babied running the Appalachian mountains
Used to swear by it for turbo vehicles******** They removed the zinc and some other additives in the rotella t6 so it's not as good for turbo vehicles anymore.
@@Kyrazlan They did something to it. That shit flattened my cam in 2 weeks. Was chasing lash till I changed the oil and ticked horribly bad. When I changed it out it stopping grinding my cam but still ticked a tiny bit but it was already fucked. Never again T6, I wouldn't even use it in a oil burning stove.
Brotella lol.
I have rotella T6 in my boosted car right now - a lot of people have said it's not as good but it seems to do the trick at 500+hp
I always come back to this video this is what got me to switch to Amsoil years ago and it is the best thing I have ever done for my pickup muscle car bikes generator equipment ect ect. Blackstone oil analysis to prove it to! thank you Todd! BTW idk how u have time to respond to everyone that comments but u do an awesome job with your videos brother 👏 god bless.
Thanks and you are welcome!
Great tests..enjoyed the information.
Thank sand you are welcome!
Thanks for taking the time and commitment to continue these videos. I really love your videos!
Thank you!
@@ProjectFarm I would Love a Brake Oil Test video if you could figure out a way to make one!. I'm in the market for the best brake fluid for my vintage motorcycle due to not having an ABS system installed. Would love to see if aftermarket brake fluid really outperform OEM Dot recommended ones
Your'e bored and need adult supervision . Watch the next session!
Great testing Todd! :-) Your videos make it really easy to choose the right products!
Thank you very much! I enjoyed your latest laundry detergent video a lot! You've got an AWESOME channel! I'll be changing brands for sure. Thanks again!
Spotted you. What other video channels do you recomend? Maybe make a video on that ;)
@@ProjectFarm so do you use amsoil in your own vehicle
Would like to see you rest motorcycle oil one being Harley Davidson oil . Thanks fir testing . This is the first video I watched from you but won’t e the last . Thanks again
From what I gathered both are excellent and easily the top 2 oils in the world which is why they are compared here. if ur in a colder climate id run amsoil. But for me I live near the equator, so i would get whichever is cheaper. Thats a win win for us and just makes sense for me.
As always, awesome vid sir thank you
Thanks and you are welcome!
Thank you! Good info, much appreciated.
Thanks and you are welcome!
Royal Purple is a group 3 oil and Amsoil is a group 4 oil, Pennzoil Platinum, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, Schaeffer's and Valvoline Synthetic would be a good test
Thank you for the video idea!
@@ProjectFarm maybe test vs caster oil and an aviation grade oil
The API Royal Purple is most likely mainly Group III, HPS is mainly Group IV.
@@isaackvasager9957 you have to really REALLY dig. The oil grouping is the dirtyest secret of the oil industry. Group 3 oils are pretty much just distilled conventional. Group 4 are pure, 100% synthetic.
Try the MSDS sheet and look for keywords that may indicate grouping.
@@ProjectFarm I have also heard good things about Schaeffer's. My mechanic says it has good film strength. I would also be interested in Rotella T6
Can you bring in oils like Liqui-Moly and Motul for the next test.
I second motul!
Yes motul!
How bout Mazda OEM full synthetic w/moly vs Castrol Magnetec ? castrol claims to have enough moly additive but when asked they wouldnt tell me how much. a blackstone oil lab showed mazda oil had over twice the moly yet mazda still uses castrol in their service dept when you get an oil change!!
A. Dange ... YES, I'd like to see Motul also!! It's supposed to be a GREAT German oil.
Second on the Liqui-Moly!!
Great video, thx for all ur hardwork
Thanks and you are welcome!
As a mechanic, this video is so entertaining & satisfying to watch. 👍👍
“No oil was spilled in the making of this video”
lol. Nice!

@@turbomotovlog5588 my dad started saying black cows matter 🤣 he's a farmer
This continues to be my favorite CZcams channel. I have been a happy subscriber since 2017. Keep up the excellent work!
Thank you
This was amazing to watch thank you 👍😎
Thanks and you are welcome!
Bro your videos have educated me so much further in my back yard mechanic skills
That's awesome!
This is one of the best impartial and ‘real’ tests of any oil products I have seen. Hats off to you sir, made me a believer, wish I would have started looking at these videos sooner.
Thank you very much!
no matter how good an oil is it still gets dirty which is why I don’t believe in 10k or longer change intervals. it’s better (in my opinion) to do 2 Mobil 1, Pennzoil Ultra, Royal Purple etc. in 10k than 1 Amsoil.
I wanted to thank you for all that you do. These tests are not cheap to do and on top of that all the editing you have to do. I've watched so many of your videos and love them. Also thank you for your service.
Thank you very much!
thank you infinity for your hard smart work we need more content by you and people like you !!
You are welcome!
Love what you do! Very valuable information! Would like to see the Amsoil vs. Schaeffer's and Conklin.
Thank you!
Thanks! Thanks for the video idea.
It always seemed to me that adding a purple dye could not improve anything except Easter eggs...
Do they actually ad a dye or is it a result of an additive they use that happens to be purple?
@@bobiseverywhere It's a dye. The creator of Royal Purple, John Williams, used to work for Union 76, where he developed a motor oil called Royal Triton. It was dyed purple as a marketing gimmick. After Union 76 changed hands, he left the company and went independent. He tried to purchase the rights for the Royal Triton brand to market his new synthetic oil under, but was unable to secure the trademark or licensing, so he renamed it "Royal Purple".
@Richard Skipper anyway, we have amsoil.
@Richard Skipper Royal Purple retail oil is just as good as Walmart synthetic- Garbage.
Why no lubricity test with the cooked oils?

I'd like to see this as well.
I second this. Also a diluted oil that has been run through an engine. See what combustion byproducts do to it.

Yes a standardized comparison between old and new oil scars would be very revealing. Another great video. Perfect tempo, voice speed.
This was a great showdown! Actually learned something new. I use royal purple faithfully for my Ram. I definitely would consider amsoil in the future after this comparison. Thank you for the time taken, and the production of this video.
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.
