  • The oil competition series intensifies as Amazon Basics competes against Liqui Moly. Is the low-priced AmazonBasics full synthetic 5W-30 motor as good or better than Liqui Moly's Top Tex 4200 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil? I am not sponsored by Liqui Moly or Amazon Basics. I purchased both of these products using my own money. I am not sponsored by Amazon, Liqui Moly, or by any product manufacturer. 100% of Project Farm videos are ideas that come from those leaving comments. So, thank you very much for requesting this video!

I have loved watching all your tests. Seems like a strange thing to say now that I have typed it haha. I recently had a new engine built for my race car with forged internals. The machine shop who built my engine requires me to use Motul engine oil. I have always used amsoil. I was really hoping you could do a test with all the oils generally used for racing. Amsoil Signature, Liqui Molly, Motul, Royal Purple and then maybe verus Amazon basics full synthetic.

I really enjoy watching your videos. But the testing methods in this one left me with some questions. How can you compare Oils without testing their lubrication at an actual engine temperatures? Maintaining lubrication at hight temp for an extended period of time is the MOST critical property of any engine oil. It's what makes an engine oil an engine oil.
Cold start viscosity is all fine and dandy, but according to the tests in your video, you might as well use sunflower seed oil.

Used all in my 1991 160,000mi CRX, 2003 187,000mi Xterra, and 2003 91,000mi G35 (Mobil 1 junk never touched that car). Under high performance racing conditions, you need something that's going to hold up to the heat, and not shear, froth, or separate. So in those cases, you want to have a fairly basic additive package, and not have to worry about VII breakdown.

Congratulations on this great channel, I have serious doubts as I do not know whether to use the Valvoline Full Synthetic 5w30 oil (which was in the sixth place of your graph in the total antiwear test and also in the total detergent / dispersant test) or
the new generation 5w30 Liqui Moly Molygen oil. It would be very important for me to know this German oil, since I do not know which of the two to buy, to better protect the engine of my Toyota. Keep it up!

Save your money and go with the Valvoline, your Toyota will be perfectly fine with it. This isn’t some picky European vehicle. Regular maintenance will be more important than which brand oil as long as it’s a full synthetic.

Thanks Peter Dang: I have been doing a bit of research on the typical Valvoline Synpower properties sheet or specs, since 2015, 2018 and the last 2020 range, this last item in their Valvoline Fulll Synthetic drums, they put aside their famous name that included the premium products of The brand "Synpower" is now called Fulll Synthetic Advanced, but what starts to worry me is not only that the new line has a very poor information sheet, or typical properties sheet, on the characteristics of the oil (every two years the they are reducing, removing two data at a time)
      2018 Year Sheet
      www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=valvoline.com.ar/home/wp-content/files_mf/1524079047PDS.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwiwye28_PfpAhXIVVEBVAVBAVDBVAVDBVDVAA
      2020 Year Sheet

The serious thing is that the quality of their oils has clearly decreased, I do not know if in the quality of the base oil HC (Hydrocracked), as well as in the additives (I have not seen laboratory analysis of the new line to compare) since the information of (loss by evaporation of the lubricant in the NOAK test) the current Valvoline 5w30 Full Synthetic 2020 shows a serious evaporation% of 15 when the 2018 line indicated a Noak of 9.3, this being much better to protect the engine. A high % of NOAK as in the 2020 line not only causes the oil to evaporate faster in the life of the engine, it affects the flash point of the lubricant itself as it is reduced, worsening the viscosity of the hot oil and decreasing the protection of the lubricating film at 100 ° C (which is the normal operating temperature of the engine at general levels) is not very thermostable, in addition a high% evaporation Noak increases the amount of sludge, varnishes and impurities in the oil, generating less engine life.
Also in the Pour Point °C test, in 2015 it went from -42 to -36 in the 2018 line, the 2020 maintain the same temperature, this is due to the worst quality of HC base used in the newer ranges. HTHS value from 2018 (3.2) to 2020 (3.1) I already decided to stay with Molygen New generation 5w30 and bought it (although not for price, because Molygen cost me more than Valvoline). Today Molygen new generation is superior to Valvoline 2020, If next year I still get the Valvoline 2018 games (better than the new one) I will buy again.

@@peterwelsh6975 ya but it would still be cool to see how well it works just because it's what he do! In all seriousness I'm very interested. A real world application might be where an engine wasn't so well maintained or has unknown maintenance and you the consumer are trying motor flush to see if it helps out. I actually used motor flush religiously in my 97 nissan altima for years and it didn't hurt anything mechanical anyways. In the end my rear main oil seal started leaking badly and the car wasn't worth much so I junked it. I actually read years later that the motor flush might have caused the oil leak by removing the crud that kept the seal from leaking.

Sonuvishwanath 9945312235 It’s certainly not. Regular oil changes will ensure your engine stays clean. I rebuild motors and see it all the time. Just recently rebuilt my 600 hp Toyota motor after 5,000 miles and it looked as clean as the day I first built it, and that’s with low detergent oil

Thanks for the great videos! I understand that synthetics tend to have better properties than conventional oils, but I'd love to see how the two types compare in your tests. How much difference is there? Walmart's Super-Tech offers both synthetic and conventional versions of 5w-30, so these might be a good choice for comparison.
