- Pennzoil and Quaker State make motor oils that are the same viscosity, the same specification, and they are made in the same plant. Could they actually be the same oil?
We analyzed a bottle of Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 Synthetic and Quaker State 5W-30 Synthetic to find out. Watch as Certified Lubrication Specialist, Lake Speed Jr, reveals the findings. The results are quite interesting...

IN the mid 1970's Smokey wrote about and tested a synthetic oil called All proof 5w-50. The article was in Popular Science magazine. He built a mild 302 Chevy and gained 20 hp and lowered oil temp by about 15 degrees. Went back to mineral oil and lost the 20 hp.
He pulled the heads between tests and checked the valves etc. I called Smokey and ordered enough oil for 2 302 Ford boat engines. My gains were similar to his. I was thrilled with the results and thrilled to speak with Smokey. When i called back to reorder for another oil change he informed me that the chemist died and his son changed the formula and he didn't like it. The oil came out of Superior, Wisconsin. Recently i read that the product became part of Royal Purple.I currently use Mobil 1 15w-50 in BBC marine engines and some hiper Chevy small block boat engines that don't always have oil coolers like the BBC. The Mobil 1 15w-50 was first marketed about 1986. Always looking for the " perfect" motor oil😂 Your information adds another level of understanding, Thanks
I remember reading about that oil in his book.
The oil cost $5.00 a quart, back in the 1970's and the 302 oil pans were oversize
and held 7-8 quarts each engine..
I changed the oil in my wife's car for years. It was only when I did the first change using Royal Purple with Synerlec (not the API certified oil) she came back and asked what did I do to the car. She said it drove better, quieter and engine felt stronger. She thought I did some kind of tune to the engine. I told her all I did was an oil change. That experience sold me on RP and I used that in my own car and the engine did feel stronger.

-My thoughts on oil and related topics :
-My favorite oil is the cheapest often Costco supertech or Amazon.
- I like Penzoil ultra platinum, but only when it’s on sale
- Wix filters always.
-I’ve found that using a fumoto drainvalve and changing the oil early works wonders if you’re looking to own a car long term like 200k miles
-4k-5k in mileage is the sweet spot for changing oil within 6 months
Warren distribution stuff is low and group 3 and you’ll get more metals than Pennzoil platinum ultra, which is one of the best off shelf oils. 200,000 miles no problem with the Warren oil and wicks filter. If you want to go to 400,000 miles better use platinum ultra and Fram ultra or Amsoil filters. In some engines certain Amsoil oils perform better than platinum ultra, but you need to do analysis trending if that is the case with your application.

Wow, thank you!
It's very obvious to many of us that you're speaking the truth based on science. So I think we would all love to see an episode, or more, on the history of motor oil
I first became interested in motor oils when I bought my first brand new motorcycle in 1986. I wondered why there were car motor oils and motorcycle motor oils and wondered if I could run the cheaper of the two in my bike.
I was also told at the time to not run synthetic oil in my bike because it would make the seals shrink causing oil leaks. Low and behold, against that original piece of advice, I did and actually started to see some oil seeping out of some seals which immediately made me switch back to conventional oil.
That told me at the time there were significant differences in certain types of oils, but I'm also now aware that the additives are just as important, if not more, than what the base oil is made from.
I'm so glad I found this channel and hope to get all of my questions answered over time as I watch future and past episodes.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for all the information and the video.

As a mechanic who is cleaning up an isx15 who ran pennzoil say no it has a lot of plugged oil galleries
@@D3AThCAl2DSI don’t know what isx15 is. Maybe it is not the oil that caused plugged oil galleries. What were the oil change intervals?! For how long the oil has been run? Maybe the galleries were plugged before the Pennzoil UP was put inside that engine? It is just that only a few users reported of sludge buildup while thousands of others did not have any problems. Too many car guys love to bluster on about what they always relied on “back in the day” because they had X number of cars run 250,000 miles without a hiccup using “good ol’ reliable ____”. I grew up loyal to conventional Quaker State in my first 30 years of cars (80s, 90s, 00’s). I’m glad your channel showed up in my feed today, I have been trying to learn at the available opportunities about oil for my whole career servicing equipment. Maybe someday you’ll get into gear boxes and PAG vs PAO and I will probably still be here lol. Crazy question though have you seen the Tech sheet on the Synerlec additive used in the Royal Purple brand? It seems to me that it’s very different from conventional lubricant operating mechanisms. I also think that modern engines have very good metallurgy and to accomplish what they are espousing would take many hours of operation.
I have an anecdotal story about a 95 Crown Victoria where I had RP in the transmission and the engine and at one point (8-12k miles later) the engine temperature dropped with the outside air temperature hovering about 43 degrees and that winter I couldn’t turn the cabin heater fan above 3/4 open as it would blow cold. We kept that car until 262k , original engine and transmission. Burned a quart every 4,000 miles from about 180somek miles didn’t get any worse 🤷♂️ but it make me think there is something to what RP says I just want to know the 5W’s and the H… especially the H.
We used a similar product in our rotary screw air compressors - probably no synerlec - and those compressors worked continuously for 10’s of thousands of hours on a purple (when new) oil that was a PAO based oil. So I have little doubt under the right application the PAO oils are very effective. 😀

Great suggestion!
I want you to know you’ve really done well adapting to video making, you can see a huge quality jump from months back. Keep up the good work
Thank you so much!
