- I am not sponsored by Amazon, Mobil 1, or Valvoline. I bought all the products for this test using my own money. Dozens of viewers requested this video. I'm not part of the Amazon Affiliate Program either, since I'm not trying to sell products. I do independent testing only. So, thank you very much for the video ideas, including this one! AmazonBasics Fully Synthetic Motor Oil better than Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil? In this video, I tested Valvoline 10W-30 Conventional Motor Oil, AmazonBasics Full Synthetic Motor OIl, and Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Motor oil for cold temperature flow, lubricity, evaporative loss after exposure to approximately 400F for 2 hours, and cold flow of each oil after exposed to heat for 2 hours. Finally, while I don't have a shop full of expensive oil testing equipment, the testing approach I use helps provide good information on the quality of these oil products. This is a showdown between AmazonBasics full synthetic motor oil and Mobil 1 full synthetic motor oil. The VALVOLINE motor oil used in this experiment is CONVENTIONAL motor oil, NOT SYNTHETIC. The use of the Valvoline conventional motor oil is to illustrate the benefits of that synthetic engine oil has over conventional motor oil. Why buy a conventional motor oil when you can purchase a synthetic motor oil which will outperform conventional oil for around the same price or a little more? The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. Now I want to see that but with the synthetic blend added.
Why buy a conventional oil is because you have an old engine that burns oil and leaks if it doesn't have a little sludge to help the seals stop that, where startup wear is less of a concern than having a mess where you park it and having to add oil more often than convenient. I mean if you live where you can't park a car in your driveway, in an apartment or condo without a garage so you are just getting a little more time out of the vehicle with the least hassle possible. You can try high mileage oil in such cases but high mileage dino seals better than high mileage synthetic.
Excellent demonstration as always. I think razor blades might make a good comparison. There's also a rumor/conspiracy doing the rounds that Gillete uses poorer quality steel over time (thus enticing customers to try their New-and-improved 7 blade razor. Plausible.

As a science teacher, I think this would make a great set of experiments for an auto shop class. So much covered here with controls (which were great), looking at claims, data, data analysis, dispelling brand worship (tribalism) & avoiding bias. Solid stuff. I think I'm going to write this up as a set of labs and give it to my auto shop teacher as it (and this channel in sum) really shows not only the practical purpose of science and its method, but also highlights the inherent cross-curricular application of teaching it.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing and the best to you and the project in class! Glad I could help.
@@ProjectFarm hi, thank you for the info. Would really love to see a video comparing oil filters, specifically Mobil 1, Hastings and wix
I have a '14 Corolla and live in Chicago. Based on your testing is there a 0W-20 that you'd recommend? Amazon Basics/SuperTech (Warren Distribution)?
Great video. Your test procedures are easily understood by the average folks. I remember your Walmart and Costco synthetic oil test its proof a person can save money by buying brands that can perform as well as the more expensive sive brands. Thanks for the info.
The amount of time you must spend on these videos is insane, but i really appreciate the thoroughness of all your tests .

I recently used Pennzoil 5w20 full synthetic on a 2014 explorer 3.5l and drove from San jose to Las Vegas and back and upon returning I was extremely low on oil. Car has no oil leaks and is my daily driver. Pennzoil seems to evaporate rather quickly. Made the switch back to Supertech synthetic oil.

I bet the Amazon oil is just a quality name brand oil that got licensed out to amazon for re-branding.
I was wondering that too. "Amazon Basics" is just a name brand but there is no way they built a bunch of different factories, made a whole RnD department for each division to develop products from nothing. definitely just contracted out work to existing factories.
Thank you. It's made by Warren Distribution, a very reputable company

Similar to the great value brand of Walmart
Amazon Basics is a generic brand similar to Great Value, Parade, Up&Up, etc.

@@ProjectFarm great video mate! from your experience you would suggest more oil in a 2zzge engine (toyota vvtLi 192 hp 8.250rpm) I put the factory toyota 5w40 I live in Greece hot climate and I have been told about molygen what is your opinion? can you tell me 3,4 companies in 5w40 that you consider top in high speed stress but also in the city? thank you very much! ✌
Just a suggestion: Use the same oil as a control to see the precision of your testing. So instead of 3 cups, have for example 4, whereas 2 with the same oil. With this little extra work, you can measure how precise your testing is. If there is a significant difference between the same oil, your test has more variability than the different oils, biasing the results.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I think you might want to make a video RE: Your oil testing and demonstrate what you suggested 😁
@@ProjectFarm At 10:41 The amount of oil being "sprayed" on the sides of the cup was massive, demonstrating what so may other saw and I want beck to check on; more oil for the Mobile 1 test, for sure. Hey! Thank you for all the time and everything you put into all of the videos you do!
I do have an idea for you to test..
Wondering if you could possibly do one involving oils for ATVs, Motorcycles.
The oils that the different places suggest (Polaris & more) are typically their own brands and they like to charge a premium for those oils. I’m sure there are plenty of other brands that would work just fine at a much more affordable price.
Hopefully this is a suggestion that peaks your interest, I’m sure it would a lot of other people being that on all the forums for that type of thing there is a ton of suggestions but no testing to back any of it up.
Thanks again and I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Consumer Reports who? This is the greatest channel on CZcams!
Thank you
The fact all the videos are made based on feedback means the content is perfect and we’re not watching paint dry
Consumer Union has been caught lying in the past. I would look outside to check, if they said the sun was shining. This guy is where its at, dont take payoffs or bribes or any other form of "guidance" in your results. Hope you stay that way. I would like to see alittle more control, like when filling the cups before the friction test, im certain there was more oil in the mobile cup than the amazon cup, at least the camera makes it seem that way. But your doing what you can, and i appreciate that.
You're a dumbass if you've ever even considered them a usable source
Consumer Reports Sucks, CR has rigged testing. That's why many manufacturers do not submit their product for testing.
That was an outstanding video! A lot of work went into making that video. It's very hard for anyone to dispute your tests. A++. Looks like I'll try Amazon's oil in the future. :-)

Easy to dispute when Valvoline is conventional and the other two are synthetic.
@@daviddouglas3466 Valvoline was the control. It was there to demonstrate that even if Amazon Basics was inferior to Mobile 1, it was still probably much better than conventional. Turns out, it holds it's own vs. M1 anyway.

@@daviddouglas3466 I guess you missed the part when he was talking about price. :-) If you notice, he had the Valvoline to the left(Cheapest), then Amazon oil, then Mobil 1. Bottom line, the Amazon full synthetic motor oil is as good as or better than the Mobil 1. That says a lot.

I have watched almost all of your videos over the past several years and really enjoy your engine oil ones. I own my own trucking company and would like to a make a suggestion for you to test Ford Diesel Oil, Shell Rotella Diesel Oil, Schaeffer Diesel Oil, and Lucas Diesel Oil both synthetic and regular. I started running Lucas over Schaffer’s due to cost and want to make sure I’m not ruining my engines. In my experience with Rotella, my engines have always burned oil and with other brands I do not. I want to make sure the oil I’m using is safe for my engine. I trust and respect your results that you come up with in your videos and would appreciated an unbiased answer from someone I trust.
You should move this comment to the video itself instead of as a comment to a comment. He'll never see it here for sure.
Cool videos! I think the amount of oil in the cup should be exactly the same fill height so the wheel carries the same to the bearing during the test run.
I live in a cold weather area, today it’s -31c, and have used Mobil 1 in my vehicles. I am pleased to see by your testing thar the extra I have spent on synthetic oil was worth it. Thank you yet again for your unbiased testing. 🙂👍🏻👍🏻
Mobil 1 is an amazing product. I use it in a lot of equipment with A plus results.
no matter the oil, in that temp you should use block heater whenever possible.
j3sion Yes indeed, and a battery maintainer. The cold will sap a battery quite quickly.
🙂👍🏻👍🏻
Agreed. I never understand the desire to save $5-20 per oil change on cheaper oil. It's just not worth it and the price of oil, itself, is such a minor expense in the context of the total cost of maintenance over the life of one's car. Where I live, the half hour of service technician time is _much_ more expensive than the price of the oil itself.
alliejr Oh so true! 👍🏻👍🏻
Great test. In the friction test, it looked like the wheel dipped deeper into the cup of Mobile1 oil. That could have impacted the wear result. I must say, Amazon oil looks good in your tests.
True, he was measuring heat from friction too right? During that test, and the Amazon Basics was mid 40°'s while both vav and mobile were in the low 50°'s
Yeah I noticed that too, seemed like there was a lot more oil in the cup
I saw that too
There was a whole lot more oil in the cup of the Mobil 1. And more lubrication can change the results.
@@ryannrjohnson and yet, the Amazon Basics did just as well as Mobil 1 even though there was more Mobil 1... (which happens to be the oil I normally grab)

A more real test would be to heat the oil to 212 degrees and do the bearing test.
That's a good idea man.
Why no lubricity at high temp? -it’ll be nice to have but actually there is no need for wear/lubricity test at hot condition. Because most car engines’ wear and tear(~90%) is done at cold start, when lubrications has not been established. Once Lubrications is formed, wear on metal is negligible.. again, it is nice to have but not necessary.
Sounds good but no need to-most wear (~90%) is caused when engine starts. How soon lubrication builds up is more important than how well it lubricates-although both are important.
Oil temp can be much higher than water temp. Full synthetics are at their best in the 250*+ range when you're towing heavy or running hard compared to conventional.
Tony Yao then why not one on oil fresh out of the freezer, and one on oil heated on that griddle. Maybe he could get a special shaped glass cup instead of the plastic ones.

This was a very logical test of motor oil lubrication, flow, and volatility. It is now 3 years after this comparison test in which Amazon Basics synthetic oil won the competition. The question in my mind is whether Amazon's oil uses the same formulation as it was in this Feb 2019 test? These videos are among my favorite on CZcams. Due to your videos I went back to changing my own oil. Store oil changes are cheap, quick, and clean but now I want to know what exactly I am putting in my vehicle. I would really like to see the major brands retested each year to keep them honest. As you have probably noticed, Amazon basic's 5W-20 has jumped up nearly 70% in the past two years and is now more expensive than most of the competition. I also have no idea if they have switched to cheaper additives in the process to increase their margins. I think part of the plan was to put out a stellar low price oil to get people to "subscribe and save" and then jack the price up later hoping consumers would not notice. It would be interesting to see if it is the same quality as it was back in early 2019.
Thanks! Great suggestion. Thank you.

Great analysis! One type of oil I've always been curious about is piston engine aviation oil. I know people who haven't changed the oil type they use in their airplanes for 30 years, but the same problems continuously plague them...corrosion from condensation in the engine caused from low use, which causes the cams and cylinders to wear. It would be interesting to compare various types of aircraft engine oils to each other and then compare it to a modern synthetic automotive oil for corrosion protection and wear.
Thanks! Thanks for the suggestion.
A very important attribute of piston aviation oil is to suspend lead. 100 low lead is the most common fuel for these engines and some oils do a poor job of keeping the lead in solution and not as sludge in the pan and rings. Some synthetic and blend oils were very poor at handling the lead and large lawsuits followed. Mobil AV1 and Shell Aeroshell are know for lead fouling. I always ran Phillips mineral base and never had any lead issues.
@@billy-bo-dilly Thats news to me that Aeroshell has problems with lead fouling. I use it, almost everyone I know uses it and this has never been an issue. Possibly those who have problems never change their oil.
Very interesting. One suggestion, do lubricity test for 2 or 3 different temperatures, for example one for normal temp and another for high temp and repeat it for the cooked oils as well to see how it'll perform then.
Thanks
Thanks for the suggestion,
Wish he had rerun the bearing test with used hot oil.
Thank you!
that would have been interesting as well^^ but i have t oadmit that he really tests many aspects and try to get the best results without any chance of changing the results by influencing disturbance (different heatlevels on the plate and stuff like that^^)
How the oil performs at room temperature is interesting data, but you really need to know cold AND hot performance to make a distinction about a clear winner.
I concur, was thinking the same thing. Even if it was allowed to cool off first (for safety reasons) it would be interesting to see the bearing test repeated after the oils had been subjected to the heat.
A cold bearing test would be interesting as well.
So educational and well explained...cheers mate!!!
Thank you!
Wow, I always bought Valvoline. I started buying high mileage synthetic blend because of the increasing miles, which is supposed to have a better wear film than the original convention I used to buy.
Thanks for sharing.
PF, I appreciate all the effort you put into your videos. Must suck cleaning everything up.
You are welcome!
Is there anything Amazon doesn't do well? Damn you, Bezos!!!
treat their employee fair. they're a shitty company but nobody cares because they have such good customer service and it sucks
Paying their employees fairly?
The Jew-turned-Nazi?
Could barely land a penis-looking shuttle.
Expand to foreign markets, Amazon outside of the US is crap.
A lot of time and effort went into making this video and I extremely grateful for the professionalism placed into this very helpful information. You are making the world a better place!
Thank you for the feedback
Amazon its making really good products, Im impressed! Thanks for tis awesome videos! Its a fantastic job!
Thank you!
Very informative. Thank you!
Very interesting! I didn't even know Amazon sold their own oil!
Thank you!
same here...
They do now. They're trying to take business from Wal-Mart any way they can. Wal-Mart has their own oil too, but I don't think it's this good
@@JoseARomo-qv5fk Its is this good, its made by the same company making the Amazon stuff...........
Your channel is very entertaining you Remind me of an old co worker in the airforce that helped fix jet engines he was really good and passionate about his job and looked and talked like you
Keep up the good work
Thank you very much!
Haha what if he was like " Paco, is that you? It's me (guy from service)."
Another fantastic test and review. Well done sir.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you.
Your videos are the best. Thank you!
I wish you had included Walmart's house brand of synthetic !
I was just going to say the same. Supertech is very cheap.
The Walmart (Supertech) oil is the same as the Amazon Basics. It's made by Warren (which you can see on the sticker in one of the shots), who make the "in house" brands for a lot of stores. Amazon Basics, Supertech at Walmart, Autoquest at Meijer, and I'm sure many others are the same oil, made by Warren. All are good options, and are very affordable.
Warren makes them both. Refers to www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/4827485/Who_makes_AmazonBasics_Full_Sy#Post4827485
Thank you for the video idea!
@@ProjectFarm If you are going to test Mobile 1, you might as well add Mobile 1 top competitors like Amsoil and Royal Purple, no? I would like to see the coffee pot test with those, which I think you haven't done in the past...
Also, when you do the lubricity testing measure the oil you put in the cup instead of just filling it by eye. An extra half ounce in one cup over another may actually affect the test by allowing more oil to be brought up on the wheel, thus pushing more oil over the bearing and giving a better reading vs a lower oil level in the cup... just a thought.
Love your tip , pour and and slide viscosity rig! Surprising result, thanks for another great test! :)
It was cool, but I'd also like to compare with a bubble viscosity setup in a controlled temperature (aquarium) water bath.
Thank you!
Outstanding experiment and video! Thank you!
You are welcome!
Great Job, after watching this particular Poject Farm video I had to subscribe!
Thanks! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Walmart brand full synthetic oil vs amazonbasics full synthetic comparison please
Thank you for the video idea!
They should be the same. Walmart gets the oil from Warren which is the same for Amazon.
What about Schaeffer oil vs Amazon oil. Ive been told schaeffers is the best oil you can buy.
@@suprashank not necessarily. Amazon could pay for a higher grade oil than walmart. Id be curious to see the results
Agreed. Walmart also has it a couple of dollars cheaper for the jug too.
I'm super happy to see this video pop up as tomorrow I'm literally trying amazonbasics fully synthetic oil in my Nissan Frontier
Thank you!
Awesome. I have used Mobil 1 for years and just switched to Amazon. I had my doubts until I watched your test. Thanks. I can sleep better now.
Glad it helped!
