FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jeff Bridges plays Jeff Lebowski who insists on being called "the Dude," a laid-back, easygoing burnout who happens to have the same name as a millionaire whose wife owes a lot of dangerous people a whole bunch of money -- resulting in the Dude having his rug soiled, sending him spiraling into the Los Angeles underworld.

Apparently Walter was never actually IN Vietnam either. I guess that was part of the original script, which makes things make WAY more sense.

Same here, just the total inaction on the Dude’s part is some great writing. The first time I saw this scene I laughed so hard I almost passed out.

Comedy aside, when Walter says he is sorry and hugs the dude it is heartbreaking. So many moments in this film seem so real and unscripted. Goodman deserved an oscar for this role.
For real it killed my happiness right away but I loved it
That scene is incredible. The Coens just have an uncanny knack for showing the reality, tragedy, comedy, and absurdity of life in the most entertaining films. They’re geniuses.
Walter is so physically imposing to everyone else but cowers from the dude here.
I love how he really doesn't know anything about Donnie outside of him liking bowling. I always thought his surfing part was totally made up! lol
No, he had a surfer hairstyle and he would definitely mention surfing to his bowling fellas.
I thought it was kinda sad. The three of them are like lost, misunderstood misfits with no real family. Donnie died and the only ones there to care about it really didn't know much about him. It's actually a deeply concerning, dark moment brought to absurdity through the brilliant directing and writing of the Coens.

I actually thought it was a rather touching eulogy, even with the Vietnam references. Walter made the best tribute he could think of to honor his friend and I thought it was lovely.
I saw that scene before I watched the movie. It made me expect a different tone in the movie.
walter had some guilt trip too given how he verbally abused donny
for real and that hug between dude and walter was beautiful🥹❤

The fact the ashes to the face didn't phase him & he was only pissed about the Vietnam statement makes it even funnier
I carried my dad's ashes to the top of a mountain. It was very windy. I could practically hear him laughing as his ashes went swirling in every single direction. I was covered. RIP Dad.
It's never too late for one last hug, and I'm sure with his sense of humor he found a way to delivere it

This is a great scene that I didn't always appreciate-especially the end of it. The grief finally seems to hit Walter as he is cleaning the mess he made with the ashes. The repetitions of the "I'm sorry" line reveal a vulnerability that you can just feel. And the dude's frustrated outburst is another common manifestation of grief. Then his anger recedes, and the two men are left there alone in their moment of grief. But in this grief there is also a newfound perspective and appreciation for one another. Masterfully done.
Walter saying I'm sorry, the tone of true regret just completely kills it!
Yeah and then how he doesn't even care what he's sorry for. He just on some level doesn't want The Dude to hate him.
Then the single hand pat on the back to confirm "Yeah Walter, It's ok."
His gait in that scene vs the entire movie..
He wasn't just apologizing for the ashes. He was apologizing for what an A-hole he is. You can feel it.
Walter turns into a little boy before your eyes.

Dude just standing there with ashes blowing on his face, hopelessly resigned to the stupidity of Walter.
When I first saw the movie I laughed like crazy at this moment.
From the scene where they were told about the cost of the urn up to this scene, brilliant writing.

I’m about to scatter my dad’s ashes. this was his favorite movie. I’m definitely using this line
I like that they probably have no idea what he wanted or even what he enjoyed doing outside of bowling
Every second of this scene has a dark hilarity to it... the delivery of every line is perfect, the art of every shot is a masterpiece. It's hard to describe, but that's why the Coen brothers are world-famous directors and I'm just a dude sittin here talking about it

I don't think we will see a better casting than this in a comedy movie. This scene made me laugh so hard, I had to wipe my tears. Dude didn't even flinch. That wind, ashes, folger, Walter's hug. The funniest scene ever.

We had my dad’s memorial service yesterday. He loved this movie along with his friends. They gave this exact speech yesterday. I know that’s probably exactly what he wanted

I was 18 when I first watched this movie, and in my 18 years I don't think I had ever laughed harder than when i saw this scene for the first time
honestly one of my favourite scenes out of any movie ever. some hilarious but also poignant observational comedy. "life sucks, there is no real justice or meaning, we're all gonna die, so let's go bowling"

This scene always gets me. Goodman is such an amazing actor that he turns a scene of humor and cringe to a scene of somber with the simple tilt of the head and crack of the voice.

Just watched this movie for the first time ever and I can’t help but feel the ashes blowing back into the dude’s face are a representation of an innocent life being lost hitting him in the face showing his guilt and blood on his hands, symbolized here as blowing up on his face

It’s actually kinda sweet when they hugged with Donnie’s ashes in between them, even the most dumbest people on earth can still experience incredibly deep profound moments that life gives everyone
Just how perfect this scene is for the Coen Brothers to include. You would think something as simple would be insignificant in a movie script but it’s such a monumental moment having the ashes hit Lebowski like that. This is why the Coen Brothers are awesome. So many little dumb moments in this movie that are hilarious and memorable.
If my memory serves me correctly when I saw this scene for the first time I laughed so hard non-stop for several minutes. It almost made me faint as far as I remember.

that eulogy wasn't as bad as i remembered - funny scene.......i like walter more in 2022 than i did in the 90's;
Poor Donny gets crapped on even in Death. Imagine looking down and seeing Walter talk about Nam and then spill your ashes all over the Dude.
This manages to be both touching and hilarious and a little dark (despite the fact that they have no family and only have each other, they really don't know too much about each other). I remember laughing to the point of tears when none of those ashes made it to the ocean and instead coated the Dude. 🤣

Underrated
Donny was just a figment of Walter's imagination to cope with losing Donny in vietnam.
Yeah, I think that’s a really valid theory. The dude never really responds to anything Donnie says or does in the whole film. If that theory is right then this scene is actually particularly poignant, because it suggests that maybe Walter is finally accepting that other Donnie’s death.
Except that he does respond to Donnie, when they're in the bowing alley parking lot and Donnie asked the dude where he's going, and tells the dude that his phone is ringing.
Also, if Donnie was just in Walters imagination, then who's ashes did the dude get covered in?
That’s always been a long running theory. But the dude did talk to Donny. Would have been a great part of the movie if the didn’t have the dude speak to Donny
